In a small coastal community in Ecuador known as La Isla, I was handing out clothes and toys to children standing in a long line in their schoolyard. They had gathered there that morning, likely wearing the only clothes they owned. They were quiet and polite, eyes bright with excitement. Watching this, my mind flashed back to a day I would never forget.
I was five years old that Christmas Eve in 1988, growing up in Ecuador, with my parents and elder sister. My father came into my bedroom and gave me a plastic cowboy. I'd never owned a real toy of any kind. My family didn't have much. My mom stayed home, caring for my sister and me. My dad drove a food delivery truck and was on the road for days at a time.
"I hope you like your toy,"my father said, kneeling down and holding me close. I felt the warmth of his body,as if in giving me this toy he was also giving me a part of himself. Even at age five, I knew that had been a gift.
By sixth grade our family moved to the US, and life got easier.I excelled in high school. Every good grade was a thankyou to my parents for all they'd done for me. I went on to college, and after graduation, with my degree in hand, I became a pharmacist (药剂师).I was finally able to buy nice gifts for my family, but I could never give in equal measure the love I'd felt from that unexpected gift I'd received as a little boy. I wished every child could know that feeling.
Two years into my career, I made my first trip to La Isla. Two years later, I returned with my nonprofit organization called Toys for Ecuador. My parents, sister and I traveled to towns across rural Ecuador with Christmas presents for children and gift baskets for seniors.
It was a journey that not only fulfilled a childhood wish to share that special feeling of love and generosity, but also reaffirmed (重申) my commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.

With the rapid advance of modern technology, smart homes equipped with integrated sensors and automatic control systems have gradually stepped into ordinary families. These intelligent homes can monitor indoor temperature, humidity and safety risks in real time, adjust home environment automatically, and greatly improve living efficiency. Many people believe that smart technology will completely reshape our future lifestyle for the better.
Undeniably, smart homes bring remarkable advantages. Relying on sensitive integrated sensors, the system can record users' living habits and offer personalized services. It can cut down energy waste by turning off unused electrical equipment and provide reliable security by detecting potential dangers at an early stage. In busy modern life, such automation saves people plenty of time and energy, making daily life far more convenient and comfortable.
However, every technological breakthrough comes with unavoidable drawbacks. For one thing, smart home systems highly depend on network signals and electric power. Once technical failure occurs, automatic monitoring and intelligent adjustment will stop working, which may cause inconvenience or even safety troubles. For another, continuous data collection by sensors raises huge concerns about personal privacy. All living behaviors recorded and stored online may be stolen or misused, threatening personal information security.
Besides, overreliance on intelligent devices may gradually weaken people's basic living skills. Without the need to switch equipment manually or manage daily affairs, some people may become lazy and less independent.
In fact, smart home technology itself is neither good nor bad. Whether it benefits us or not depends on how we use it. While enjoying the convenience brought by advanced technology, we should also establish safe awareness and proper habits to avoid technological risks.
28.What is the core function of integrated sensors in smart homes?

As people pay increasing attention to personal health, noninvasive hometesting devices have become one of the fastestgrowing fields in modern technology. A newlydeveloped portable breath detector has drawn wide public interest recently among researchers and ordinary families.
Unlike traditional medical equipment which is huge and costly, the small detector can be held in one hand. It works by analyzing tiny chemical molecules contained in human breath. Within one minute, it can send basic healthrelated data to a connected smartphone. Users no longer need to wait for long hours in hospital halls for routine checks. For people living in remote areas, such a device may greatly improve their access to early health warnings.
Scientists warn that the new tool is not designed to replace professional hospital examinations. It only provides reference information rather than final medical conclusions. Even so, it brings fresh possibilities for community health management. Local healthcare stations are considering introducing the product for regular home visits.
Still, the promising invention has to cross several barriers before widely entering the market. Firstly, its accuracy can be influenced by food, drinks or recent exercise. Secondly, the present model is relatively expensive for most families. Researchers are now adjusting materials and production procedures. Their goal is to slash costs without lowering performance, so that more citizens can afford this convenient piece of equipment in the near future. Besides, strict official tests are required before it gets permission for mass sale.
If these problems are properly solved, the portable breath detector may change people's daily healthcheck habits. Home health monitoring, once farfetched, could gradually become part of ordinary life.
32.What is one advantage of the new breathdetecting device?
A. It can offer final medical treatment.
B. It finishes basic detection quickly.
C. ain breathing disIt can cure certeases.
D. It works without connecting to phones.
33.What can we infer from the text?
A. The detector has already been sold nationwide.

Every morning, Maya stood in front of the mirror, adjusting her hair, smoothing her blouse, checking her face repeatedly. "Do I look fine?" she would ask herself again and again. At school, she felt invisible. Not like Ben, who wore stylish clothes and laughed loudly in the hallway. Not like Lily, who answered every question loudly, casually and confidently. "Why can't I be more like them?" she thought to herself.
Last week, the school announced the annual speech contest titled Find Your Voice. Maya's heart jumped. She had written poems in secret for years about stars, silence and the way light falls through leaves. This could be her chance to be heard.Still, she hesitated. She watched Lily sign up with a smile, Ben with a confident wave. No one else seemed afraid.
That night, she opened her notebook. She read her own poems once, twice. Her voice was soft, but the words felt true. The next day, she took a deep breath and added her name to the list. The night before the tryouts, she practiced in her room. "I believe…" she began but then stopped. Her hands trembled. She tried again, but her throat closed up.On the day of the tryouts, she arrived early. One by one, students performed, bold, loud, even funny. Some made the judges laugh. Then it was her turn.
She stood up. The room went quiet. She opened her mouth, but nothing came out. Her face burned. Her hands shook. She whispered, "Sorry," and ran out.In an empty art room, she sat on the floor, head in her hands."Hey."She looked up. It was Mr. Chen, the drama teacher, holding a cup of tea. "Tough moment?" he asked, sitting beside her.
Maya nodded, eyes wet."I wanted to say something real… but I froze."Mr. Chen smiled gently."Sometimes the quietest voices have the most to say." He paused. "You don't have to be loud to be heard."
注意:(1) 续写词数应为 150 个左右:(2) 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
