A letter to Edward, a columnist (专栏作家) Dear Mr. Expert,
I grew up in an unhappy home. My parents often argued and got into a big fight. I always thought that I’d get out as soon as possible. Now, at the age of 20, I have a good job and a nice house, and I really enjoy the independence (独立) I’ve got.
My problem is that several of my friends wish they had places like mine. Although they still live with their parents, they make my home as theirs. It started with some of them spending the weekends with me. But now they just show up (出现) any time they like. They bring friends over, talk on the phone and stay up late.
I enjoy having my friends here sometimes—it makes the place feel comfortable and warm—but this is my home, not a party house. So why can’t I ask my friends to respect my privacy (隐私)?
Joan
Edward’s reply to Joan:Dear Joan,
If your family didn’t care about your feelings when you were a child, you probably have trouble letting others know your feelings now.
And if you have your friends around you to rebuild a happy family atmosphere (气氛), you may fear that saying no will bring back the kind of conflict that you grew up with—or lose the nice atmosphere you now enjoy. You need to understand that in true friendship it’s OK to put your own needs and feelings first.
Be clear about the message you want to send. For example, “I really love your company (陪伴) but I also need some privacy. So please call before you come over.”
Edward

I have a different dream. I plan 59 (be) an environmental engineer, because I want to make our cities cleaner. My father is going to take me 60 a recycling centre during the summer holiday so that I can learn how waste is dealt with.
Our teacher, Miss Zhou, was very happy with our plans. “A clear plan is 61 first step towards success,” she said. “But remember: you must write down the 62 (detail) steps, not just a big dream.”
She also told us that we should review our plans regularly. “If you never check your progress, you 63 (forget) your goals easily,” she warned. “Keep your plan 64 your desk and read it every week.”
After the meeting, I went home and made a chart. I am going to write down three small tasks every Sunday, and I will mark each one with a tick when it is finished. I believe that small steps, 65 (take) one by one, will finally lead me to my dream.

57.句意:我最好的朋友韩梅想要成为一名医生。固定搭配“want to do sth.”
