Is Shakespeare and Company’s Success Replicable(可复制的)?
The summer afternoon was hot in Paris, but no one in a bookshop seemed bothered. Dozens were patiently waiting to enter Shakespeare and Company, a storied bookshop situated 1 the River Seine from Notre Dame Cathedral “That’s where Shakespeare wrote for a while,” a passer-by informed her friends. No one corrected her.
“The myth-telling is fascinating,” says Sylvia Whitman, co-owner of the English-language bookshop. “It adds to the house of stories that a bookshop can be.” In fact, Shakespeare and Company was launched by Ms. Whitman’s father, George, 75 years ago. Around 2,000 to 3,000 people visit daily, partly drawn by the shop’s huge social-media following. It has earned more impressive screen credits than many actors, 2 (cast) in multiple classic films. A hit TV series, Emily in Paris, asked to feature 3 , but Ms. Whitman declined. The bookshop already deals with so many selfie-snappers (自拍客).
How does a physical bookstore survive three-quarters of a century and still get people to queue to enter? One answer is a clever approach to social media. Photos and videos are prohibited inside. 4 spends hours scrolling through TikTok will find the shop wrapped in mystery. “ 5 you step inside the shop, you will never find out what it looks like; so that’s kind of cool,” says Hannah, a literature student from England.
Ms. Whitman also understands that buyers are not only seeking an entertaining tale, but a story about how and where they bought that book. The shop, a quiet treasure housing many rare editions, 6 (stock) loads of luxurious hardcovers with the look of yesteryear. Far from killing print, e-books have even made some consumers 7 (keen) to invest in special editions than before.
How replicable is its model? Many other bookstores sell limited-edition products and host author events. Having authors 8 (sign) copies can triple book sales. Yet Shakespeare and Company’s playbook is impossible 9 (copy). Its history and location in central Paris are unbeatable. “Very few booksellers own their real estate as Shakespeare and Company 10 ,” notes James Daunt, the boss of bookseller Barnes&Noble. He points out that a bookshop that also happened to be called Shakespeare&Co (no relation) closed last year in New York, as it faced rising rents and other business challenges.
1.across 2.cast/having been cast 3.it 4.Whoever 5.Unless/Until 6.stocks 7.keener 8.sign 9.to copy 10.does

Passage 4
David Samson, an associate professor at the University of Toronto, has scaled trees to study chimpanzee (黑猩猩) beds and visited remote tribes to understand how the story of human sleep unfolded. His book “The Sleepless Ape: The Story of Sleep in Human Evolution” was 31 (publish) on May 19.
Samson’s findings reveal how human sleep patterns became shorter, deeper and more flexible than 32 of our more ape-like ancestors, freeing time to spend on toolmaking, social interactions and migration around the world.
His book details how our ancestral species left the safety of 33 (sleep) in trees for the dangerous ground as a result of shelter, fire and social sleeping. How did that shift benefit us?
According to Samson, 34 we created was a completely new innovative space for sleep, and the analogy (类比) he has been using here is a shell.
We do know that early humans like Homo erectus (直立人) were sleeping in groups. We can 35 tell that right around this time there was likely the controlled use of fire. And because of the fact that you have a much larger group with demographic (人口的) variability, you likely had a situation 36 someone was awake 24/7. He must be awake there to sound the alarm 37 there was danger. It’s very clear that a hunter-gatherer camp would have been adapted to have larks and owls (早起型人与夜猫子型人) relatively 38 (distribute), such that the shell is a little bit safer during a 24-hour period.
Meanwhile, humans have more REM (rapid eye movement) sleep than other primates (灵长类) 39 less sleep in total. When you’re in phasic REM, you’re as dead to the world 40 you’ll ever be. For our ancient ancestors, it was extremely costly to be in this state, but if you’ve built the shell, all of a sudden you have a new opportunity to get this really valuable sleep at higher proportions than other animals.
31.published 32.those 33.sleeping 34.what 35.also 36.where 37.if/when 38.distributed 39.but 40.as
根据上文“We do know that early humans like Homo erectus (直立人) were sleeping in groups.(我们确实知道,像直立人这样的早期人类是成群睡在一起的。)”
根据“more REM (rapid eye movement) sleep(更多的REM睡眠)”以及“less sleep in total(更少的总睡眠时间)”可知,前后句之间构成转折关系,所以此处为but。

The Timeless Tradition of Chinese Tea Ceremony
The Chinese tea ceremony, known as gongfu cha, represents one of China’s 41 (refined) cultural practices, blending philosophy, etiquette, and sensory appreciation into a single ritual. 42 (date) back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD), this tradition has evolved into a meditative art form that continues to captivate both practitioners and observers worldwide.
The tea ceremony is built around four key elements: good tea, clean water, the right teapot, and proper brewing methods. Tea experts first heat special Yixing clay teapots — these teapots improve with repeated use 43 they soak up tea flavors. Then they add oolong or Pu’er tea leaves. The water is kept hot but never boiling 44 (bring) out the tea’s best taste, and the same leaves are used to make several cups of tea. Every action 45 (matter), from washing the leaves to pouring tea into small cups, following traditional rules that require full concentration.
The tea ceremony is not just about making tea. It teaches important life values like peace and respect, which Confucius taught long ago. When tea is poured in circles, it represents how life keeps going. Serving tea to older people first shows respect for elders. Scientists now prove 46 ancient people knew — a substance called L-theanine in tea helps people feel calm but focused. This natural relaxing effect 47 (exist) hundreds of years before people started talking about “mindfulness”.
Interestingly, regional variations reveal cultural diversity. Fujian’s ceremonies emphasize floral aromas, 48 Tibetan butter tea addresses high-altitude nutritional needs. Contemporary adaptations include tea-meditation hybrids in Shanghai skyscrapers, proving this ancient practice remains dynamically relevant.
As globalization accelerates, the tea ceremony offers a counterbalance — a space 49 time slows down, relationships deepen, and we reconnect with nature’s rhythms. This 1,300-year-old tradition still teaches us invaluable lessons 50 _______ patience, precision, and presence in our fast-paced world.

21.coming 22.they 23.where 24,has not happened 25.called
26.against 27.when/as 28.to see 29.that 30.whoever
21.coming
22.they
根据句子结构,该句缺主语,结合前面的“They both turned off the electricity for the telegraph,”可知这后半句的主语也为“they”,故填入they。
23.where
根据后面的“or at the very south, where it is the aurora australis or Southern Lights.” 故填入 where。 24.has not happened
25.called
26.against
27.when/as
本段一开始提到“Why does the aurora happen? (为什么会发生极光?)”,可知本段解释了极光是如何发生的,那么此处说的应是“当这种情况发生时,我们就会看到美丽的极光线或云”,这是一个时间状语从句,故填入“when/as”。句意:当这种情况发生时,我们就会看到美丽的极光线或云。
28.to see
29.that
根据 be sure 后面的 it will happen,判定从句作的是宾语的成分,故此处用 that 引导宾语从句,填入 that。
30.whoever

At Hopson One Mall in Yangpu district, Shanghai, hundreds of visitors line up at a popup store. They are drawn by a popular item — squishy (捏捏) cake toys — colorful, foam squeezables designed for stress relief and fashion statements. Unlike ultra-squishy toys, this item has a 11 (firm) foam texture, great for office desk decor, party gifts or relieving work and school pressure for both kids and adults alike.
The toys have become so popular that a large number of tourists from Southeast Asian countries 12 (pay) special visits to China currently, dragging their suitcases to offline stores in Shanghai for shopping trips. After these tourists return to their home countries, 13 they resell their products at double or even higher prices, the products are still highly sought after by local consumers.
At a soft rubber toy factory in Zhejiang province’s Yiwu, located some 300 kilometers from Shanghai, millions of “freshly baked” bun-shaped decompression toys are about 14 (board) a truck bound for Ningbo Zhoushan Port, crossing mountains and waterways to Europe and North America.
With some markets seeing a recovery trend, China’s $15.6 billion first-half total sends a clear signal: the next wave of Chinese toy exports will reach 15 emotional consumption is taking root, be it in Europe, North America or Southeast Asia. 16 is behind this evolving phenomenon of exports is a combination of multiple factors, 17 “China-Chic” (国潮) design breakthroughs, mature supply chain support, global layout acceleration and the enduring appeal of emotional consumption.
Li Weiqing, 18 brand Molynk is one of the producers of squishy cake toys, said that since its establishment, the brand has aimed for a global layout. “ 19 (found) in 2024, our company deployed branch offices in the United States, Japan and Spain, with Shanghai as our headquarters.”
Dong Peng, an independent senior analyst, said: “In the past, Chinese toy exports 20 rely heavily on low-end OEM. But now Shanghai squishy cake toys have become cross-border hard currency, essentially completing the cognitive upgrade from ‘emotional consumer goods’ to ‘cultural symbol carriers’, no longer relying on simple price differences, but on meeting contemporary people’s emotional needs.”

The Art of Persuasion
Persuasion is the art of influencing others’ thoughts, feelings and actions. It’s about convincing people to see things from your perspective, adopt your ideas or take specific actions. 21 you’re negotiating a business deal, advocating a cause or simply trying to get your point across, persuasion plays a crucial role.
Employers place a great value on employees 22 (possess) persuasion skills because they can impact several aspects of job performance. Besides, teamwork and leadership rely heavily on the power of persuasion to get things done. 23 persuasion skills, employees may not be as committed to 24 makes an organization’s vision valuable, or convinced of its long-term mission. Effective use of persuasion skills will not only help get your coworkers excited about your ideas, it’ll also help you motivate them to achieve a common goal.
In order to learn the art of persuasion at the workplace, you need to understand the situations 25 conflicts arise and how to reach agreements. Good communication is the first step in effective persuasion, but equally important is the capacity 26 (ground) in logic and reasoning. Before you can get somebody on-board with your goal, you should help them understand why they should pursue it. Using visual aids to back up your ideas 27 (prove) effective in helping illustrate your ideas better.
Successful persuasion skills are based on your ability to have positive interactions and maintain meaningful relationships with people. In order to sustain those relationships, you must be able to work in their best interests as well. Your coworkers are 28 (likely) to disagree with you when they succeed alongside. The more they achieve and the greater progress they make, the more they trust your judgement and strength.
We persuade and get persuaded every day. A vast majority of people favour cooperation and teamwork over traditional organizational structures; no one likes to be told what to do or 29 (push) around. Therefore, organizations and leaders 30 adopt powerful persuasion skills to bring about necessary changes.
