Standing Out and Fitting In
I have always thought that if you can survive high school, you can survive anything. It is the time in a young person’s life 1 they not only are faced with the mounting pressures of school, but also have to deal with their own physical and mental development as they navigate the rocky paths of personal self-discovery.
It is a difficult time when they want to stand out and show their stuff while hoping to be able to find a place where they can fit in, 2 fit in with both their peers and society.
This problem of “standing out” and “fitting in” can be especially difficult in China which is, as sociologists call it, a “high-context” society. In a nutshell, a high-context society is one in which the group 3 (favor) over the individual as a result of a great many unwritten social rules and understandings. It is a kind of code that people learn to adopt as they grow up in that culture. A “low-context” society, on the other hand, prioritizes the individual over the group, which encourages people to be specific in their social interactions. This is probably 4 why Western societies, most of which are multi-cultural, are known for being plain-spoken.
Does this mean that Chinese society is too conformist? I don’t think so. Western societies 5 (adopt) the word “diversity” as their motto. This has led to certain individuals and small groups within these respective societies 6 (demand) that special rights and social status be conferred upon them, which has gone on to create a significant amount of social chaos. China’s high-context society, however, provides a solid basis wherein individuals can express their personalities while still 7 (make) positive contributions to society.
The Eight Eccentrics were Chinese artists who, in the middle of the Qing dynasty, altered the traditions of ink brush painting through their broad brush strokes and use of bright colours. They were “eccentric” because they were not trained artists who painted in the traditional way. For instance, Jin Nong, one of the most famous painters in the group, was so poor during his childhood that he did not start painting 8 he was more than fifty years old. Eccentric though they may have been, Jin and the other seven artists would over time become 9 (incorporate) into Chinese culture and would go on to have significant influence over more modern painters such as Qi Baishi.
Being a little different and “standing out” — whether it’s you or someone else — is not necessarily a bad thing. 10 is important is that we tolerate these differences and remember that, in this big country and big world, we all belong and we all “fit in.”

Food delivery riders call on platforms to open up AI “black box”
Gig economy workers are urging delivery platforms to open up the “black box” of computer-driven algorithms that determine the jobs they 11 (offer) and how much they are paid, blaming increased use of AI 12 lowering wages.
A group of food delivery riders in Edinburgh have expressed concern about the fact 13 their rates of pay have fallen and their working conditions have deteriorated at the same time as Deliveroo, Uber Eats and Just Eat, the three dominant gig economy platforms in the UK and Ireland, have increased their use of automation.
“I am making half the money I was making four years ago, for the same number of hours. It makes no sense,” said David, 14 food delivery rider in Edinburgh for the past seven years who did not want to share his surname. David and other food delivery riders usually share their experiences of worsening pay and conditions in the afternoon 15 they go their separate ways to carry food and groceries to customers’ doorsteps during the dinnertime rush.
The group has come together through the Workers’ Observatory, a charity 16 (found) by gig economy workers alongside academics at St Andrews and Edinburgh universities, 17 aim is to help riders research the parts of their working experience that are mostly concealed by the companies that operate delivery platforms, to help them to improve 18 own working conditions. Cailean Gallagher, director of the observatory, said “there is so much infrastructure of knowledge and data that’s concealed” by the platforms’ algorithm, 19 (leave) gig economy riders “working in the dark”.
Deliveroo described their algorithm FRANK as “super smart” and able to decide “which rider to offer which order”. The company said FRANK was “made up of machine-learning technology, which predicts the precise timings of every order”. Previously, food was delivered 20 (efficiently) than it is with FRANK. “The vast majority of riders are satisfied working with us, and we continue to partner with the Labor Union to raise the bar on security and wellbeing standards. Information on our algorithm and fees is set out on our rider website.”

Pigeon Patrol Takes Flight
They’ve been driven from Trafalgar Square for being a creature that causes trouble; they’ve been derided as rats with wings for a long time; they’ve even been criticized as a risk 21 public health. However, pigeons could play a small part now in helping Londoners overcome one of the capital’s biggest health problems — its serious air pollution 22 (blame) for thousands of deaths a year.
In mid-March, a flock of racing pigeons was set loose from a rooftop in Brick Lane, with one equipped with a pollution sensor and 23 fitted with a GPS tracker. 24 the sensor did record the nitrogen dioxide emitted by the city’s cars, buses and trucks and can send the data to anyone who asks for 25 reading, the real purpose of using the pigeons is to raise awareness. “We’re making the invisible visible,” said Pierre Duquesnoy, the creative director behind the project and winner of a London Design Festival award. “Most of the time when people talk about pollution, we associate it with other places. But there are some days in the year 26 pollution was more serious in London. That’s the reality.”
Duquesnoy said he was inspired by the use of pigeons in the First and Second World Wars 27 (deliver) vital information and save lives. Then he thought it would also be practical for the feathered creature to take mobile air quality readings and beat London’s crowded roads. “We are glad to reverse 28 used to be seen as a flying rat into something quite positive,” said Duquesnoy.
This was the first time that urban wild animals 29 (use) to carry sensors to give us a picture of the air pollution over our heads. The release of the pigeons for three days, called the “Pigeon Air Patrol,” 30 (come) as moderate to high pollution affected much of the city.
Passage 4
Computers have learned to make us jump through hoops
The other day I had to log into a service I hadn’t used before. Since I was a new user, the website decided that it needed to check I wasn’t a robot and so set me a Captcha test to determine whether the user is a person or a machine.
I was presented with an image of a roadside scene over which 31 (lay) a grid (网格). My “challenge” was to click on each cell in the grid that contained a traffic sign. I did so and then I was presented with another image and another grid — also with a request to identify road signs. 32 a lamb, I followed the instructions, after which the website accepted my input.
And then I realized what I had been doing was adding to a dataset for training the machine-learning software that guides self-driving cars. So, 33 (gain) access to an automated service that will benefit financially from my input, I first have to do some unpaid labor to help improve the performance of autonomous vehicles.
Neat, eh? But note also the delicious additional irony 34 the Captcha is described as an “automated Turing test”. The Turing test was conceived as a way of enabling humans to determine whether a machine 35 respond in such a way that one couldn’t tell whether it was a human or a robot. So we have wandered into a world in which machines make us do tricks to prove that we are humans!
36 (strange) aspect of this unparalleled shift is how under-discussed it has been. The metaphor of the boiling frog comes to mind. Have we become subtly conditioned by digital technology 37 we don’t see what’s been happening to us? Have we been conditioned to accept a world governed by “smart” tech, trading convenience to the point 38 we become a bit like machines ourselves? The answer is “yes”.
We shape our tools and then our tools shape us. Technology is supposed to provide tools that serve our ends. But, as the machine-learning Captcha demonstrates, a significant proportion of digital tech now sees humans as means to ends that are not 39 . In the process, they reduce us to the status of cheery rats 40 (run) on treadmills (踏车) designed by people who do not have our interests at heart.
Passage 5
How Scientists Uncovered the Cause of a Devastating Flood
On 26 August, a devastating flood swept along the Lhende Khola River on the Nepal-Tibet border. Scientists around the world began to investigate its cause.
Early information released by the U. S. Geological Survey (USGS) indicated the event was a magnitude 4.4 earthquake, which might have shaken rock and ice loose in a landslide that sparked the flood. A dam break was also considered a possibility. But Kristen Cook, who has been conducting research on the Lhende Khola, downloaded publicly available seismic (地震的) data from a Nepali station 41 (locate) north of Kathmandu to see for herself. 42 the quick, intense seismic jolt (震动) typical of an earthquake, the data showed low-frequency, long-period waves characteristic of continuous shaking: a giant landslide, which 43 generated the seismic signal.
On the opposite side of the Atlantic Ocean, Göran Ekström was using data from the Global Seismographic Network to come to the same conclusion. He found that a 44 (accurate) magnitude was 5.7 — equal to a significant earthquake.
Satellite imagery later provided the next useful observations. But there was a problem: In the few available images of the mountains 45 the seismic signal originated, clouds blocked the view. 46 could be clearly seen was a sharp edge where a glacier that blanketed the mountain had snapped off.
The imagery soon led to reports that the explanation was a glacial collapse. But Ekström was not convinced. He ran calculations of how much falling mass was needed 47 (create) the magnitude 5-plus seismic signal. The answer was hundreds of millions of tons — far more than contained in the glacier alone. At the same time, cryosphere (冰冻圈) scientists calculated the energy that should have been released when the glacier collapsed. The energy was only enough to melt a small fraction of the ice.
The mystery could not be fully resolved 48 cloud-free satellite imagery arrived. The new images made the underlying mountain visible and revealed that a huge rock landslide 49 (indeed occur). The evidence showed that the flood was caused not by an earthquake or the glacier alone, but by a massive rock landslide 50 (carry) the glacier into the valley below.

1.when 2.to 3.is favored 4.the reason 5.have adopted 6.demanding 7.making 8.until 9.incorporated 10.What
固定搭配the reason why...
固定结构lead to sb./sth. doing sth.

11.are offered 12.for 13.that 14.a 15.before 16.founded 17.whose 18.their 19.leaving 20.less efficiently
固定搭配blame sth. for sth.

21.to 22.blamed 23.another 24.Although/Though/While 25.a 26.when 27.to deliver 28.what 29.had been used 30.came
固定搭配a risk to sth.
This was the first time that...
31.was laid 32.Like 33.to gain 34.that 35.could 36.The strangest 37.so that 38.where 39.ours 40.running
用that引导。

41.located 42.Rather than 43.itself 44.more accurate 45.where 46.What 47.to create 48.until 49.had indeed occurred 50.carrying
下文“the data showed low-frequency, long-period waves”与上文“the quick, intense seismic jolt typical of an earthquake”构成对比,rather than表示“而不是”,符合上下文对比逻辑。
固定搭配be needed to do sth表示“被需要来做某事”,不定式to create表目的。

结合问题“How Would You Describe An Entrepreneur?(你如何描述企业家?)” 故填入is known。
24.develops
25.existing
26.what
27.which
此处考查的是定语从句,their frustrations and negative experiences 在后面的从句中作宾语,属于事物,故填入 which。
28.As
此处回答的问题是“是什么让企业家成功”后面的you are both your manager and the manager of others,是个完整的句子,an entrepreneur 为名词结合语境,此处要表达的意思应是“作为一名企业家”,故填入 As。
29.characterized
根据句子的谓语动词necessitates 判定空格处的提示动词为非谓语动词结构,而且由“by”可知,此处应用过去分词修饰名词词组 a work style,此处实际上是一个定语从句,which is characterized by multitasking and planning,省略了 which is,故填入 characterized。
30.A
