Yash Mehta,14, got the idea for his first science fair project on a trip to Old Delhi, India. There, he visited a school for blind students and noticed that none of them used electronic braille (盲文) readers. They were just too costly. So he decided to build a more affordable one. His device uses tiny spinning motors to create vibrations that feel like the raised dots of braille letters. He then tested it with students at New Delhiˈs Blind Relief Association, achieving 86% accuracy in braille reading compared to print.
"Iˈve never been capable of software," Yash says. But building his device required coding skills, which he learned by watching YouTube videos and reading Reddit posts. "Picking up that new skill was cool," he adds, "and seeing everything fit together the first time was just pure excitement."
Despite his initial joy, the process wasnˈt without challenges. At first, he attempted to base his design on a TENS machine—a device that uses electric pulses to relieve pain, hoping these pulses could create the feeling of braille dots. When this approach didnˈt work, he realized that instead of starting over, he only needed to change the way of spreading information to the finger. This idea helped him power through the development of his motor-based device.
Yashˈs research earned him the first-place Technology Award in the 2024 Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge. "Iˈm planning to add OCR," Yash says. Right now, his machine translates computer texts into braille letters. But with OCR, it could translate printed or handwritten texts into braille. For those new to science fairs, Yash advises, "Try to find something that you think can be done based on your current abilities. Also, ask people in your community what problems they need solving. I think thatˈs the most important part—getting first-hand feedback."
24.Which of the following best describes Yashˈs braille reader?()
A. Water-resistant. B. Budget-friendly
C. Pocket-sized. D. Energy-efficient.
25.What can we learn about Yash from Paragraph 2?()

C. He is experienced. D. He is sociable.
26.How did Yash handle his challenge during the design process?()
A. By focusing on electric pulse strength.
B. By changing the TENS machineˈs design.
C. By starting over with a new type of motor.
D. By adjusting how messages reached the finger.
27.What does Yash advise beginners to do?()
A. Seek feedback from their peers.
B. Choose difficult problems to solve.
C. Find projects matching their skill level.
D. Share experiences with the community.

Smart and highly sensitive(灵敏的), a new soft sensor developed by UBC (University of British Columbia) and Honda researchers opens the door to a wide range of applications in robotics and prosthetics(假肢).
When applied to the surface of prosthetic or robotic arms, the sensor skin provides touch sensitivity and flexibility, making it possible for difficult tasks to be completed by machines, such as picking up a piece of soft fruit. The sensor is also soft to the touch, like human skin, which helps make human interactions safer and more lifelike.
"Our sensor uses weak electric fields to sense objects, even at a distance, much as touchscreens do. But unlike touchscreens, this sensor is soft and can detect (检测) forces into and along its surface," explained Dr. John Madden, senior study author and a professor of electrical and computer engineering who leads the Advanced Materials and Process Engineering Laboratory at UBC.
The UBC team developed the technology in cooperation with Frontier Robotics, Honda's research institute. Honda has been innovating in humanoid robotics since the 1980s, and developed the well-known ASIMO (Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility) robot. It has also developed devices to assist walking and the emerging Honda Avatar Robot.
"Dr. Madden's lab has significant expertise in flexible sensors and we're happy to cooperate with this team in developing touch sensors that can be applied to robots." said Mr. Ishizaki Ryusuke, one of the study's lead authors and chief engineer at Frontier Robotics.
Dr. Madden said, "Human skin has a hundred times more sensing points on a fingertip than our technology does, making it easier to light a match or sew. As sensors continue to develop to be more skin-like, and can also detect temperature and even damage, there is a need for robots to be smarter about which sensors to pay attention to and how to respond. Developments in sensors and artificial intelligence will need to go hand in hand."
28.What do we know about the new sensor?
A. Its surface feels soft.
B. It is far from sensitive.
C. Its interaction with humans seems unsafe.
D. It is unable to pick up a piece of fruit.
29.What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about the new sensor?
A. Its types. B. Its structures.
C. Its advantages. D. Its directions for use.
30.What is Mr. Ishizaki Ryusuke's attitude toward the UBC team?
A. Doubtful. B. Positive. C. Unconcerned. D. Unclear.
31.What can be learned from the last paragraph?
A. Human skin is easily hurt.
B. A fingertip has few sensing points.
C. Sensors can light matches easily.
D. Robots need further improvement.

A new kind of fuel made from the power of the sun, which could revolutionize motoring, has been invented by scientists. The solar-powered technology changes carbon dioxide and water into liquid fuel that can be directly dropped into a vehicleˈs engine.
The researchers from the University of Cambridge controlled and used the power of photosynthesis (光合作用) to transform CO2, water and sunlight into multi-carbon fuels—ethanol and propanol (乙醇和丙醇)—in a single step. These fuels have a high energy density and can be easily stored or transported, according to scientists whose work was published in Nature Energy.
"Shining sunlight on the artificial leaves and getting liquid fuel from carbon dioxide and water is an amazing bit of chemistry," said Dr Rahaman, the new studyˈs first author. "Normally, when you try to change CO2 into another chemical product, you almost always get CO or syngas, but here, weˈve been able to produce a practical liquid fuel just using the power of the sun."
They managed this by developing a specific catalyst (催化剂), optimized to allow the artificial leaves to produce more complex chemicals. Unlike fossil fuel, these solar fuels produce net zero carbon emissions, and unlike most bioethanol, they do not take any agricultural land away from food production. "While the technology is only in the laboratory phase, the ˈartificial leavesˈ are an important step in the transition away from a fossil fuel-based economy," the researchers said.
Bioethanol is often regarded as a cleaner alternative to gas since itˈs made from plants instead of fossil fuel. The United States is the worldˈs largest bioethanol producer. Almost 45% of all corn grown in the USA is used for ethanol production.
Currently, the artificial leaves and the specific catalyst are proof of concept devices and demonstrate only limited performance. The researchers are now working to optimize the light absorbers so that they can better absorb sunlight and optimize the catalyst so it can transform more sunlight into fuel. Further work will also be needed so the device can be mass-produced and make large volumes of fuel.
32.What is a potential advantage of the new fuels?()
A. Accelerating photosynthesis.
B. Storing ethanol and propanol.
C. Promoting the use of renewable energy.
D. Increasing the speed of current vehicles.
33.What did Dr Rahaman mainly want to show in Paragraph 3?()
A. The components of the artificial leaves.
B. The difficulty of changing CO2 into CO.
C. The innovation of the transformation process.
D. The factors of producing a practical liquid fuel.
34.What did the researchers say about the new fuels?()
A. They are less economical than fossil fuel.
B. They mark a significant shift from fossil fuel.
C. They are merely appropriate for laboratory use.
D. They require more agricultural land than bioethanol.
35.What does the last paragraph tell us about the artificial leaf technology?()
A. Its ability to thoroughly replace fossil fuel.
B. Its improving efficiency and production capacity.
C. Its present widespread application and performance.
D. Its immediate impact on the mass-producing artificial leaves.

On Monday morning I wore my favourite dress to school for the first time since I had started at Edison Middle School. I said good morning to our headmaster, Mr. Jordan, at the school entrance. With a genuine smile that reached his eyes, he greeted me by name, inquiring about my weekend and showing a sincere interest in my day ahead.
That was really comforting! It was the day of the poetry festival and I was excited. At my old school, I had won the poetry award every year. Iˈm horrible at sports, and too shy to be popular—but I do write good poetry, although I never told anyone here about it yet.
The poem I wrote for the Edison Festival was about my dad. I wished I would surprise my classmates and Mrs. Baker, my English teacher.
When Mrs. Baker called on me, I was so nervous that I had to swallow about ten times before I could speak. But once I started, I didnˈt even bother to look at my paper. Iˈd spent so much time perfecting the rhymes that I knew the poem by heart.
I had just started the third line when I noticed Mrs. Bakerˈs expression change. She looked at me with a mixture of appreciation and disbelief. I stopped in the middle of a word and waited for her to say something.
“Linda, you are supposed to be reading a poem you made up yourself, not reciting something you learned. That is called plagiarism (剽窃)!”
“Oh, but itˈs an original one. I did make it up, itˈs about my dad.” I heard a “Yeah, right!” from somewhere behind me, and someone else laughed. I opened my mouth to explain, but no words came out.
“Perhaps you could step out and gather your thoughts, and when you feel ready, we can discuss this with a clear mind,” said Mrs. Baker.
Iˈd been standing outside for 5 minutes when Mr. Jordan came over to ask me what happened.
