On the plain (平原), we can just see many wild animals. This is why we're here to observe Tibetan antelopes. Tibetan antelopes live on the plains of Tibet, Xinjiang and Qinghai. Watching them move slowly across the green grass, I'm attracted by the lovely animals. I'm also reminded of the danger they are in. They are being killed for their valuable fur. My guide Zhaxi works at the Changtang National Nature Reserve. The reserve is a place for the animals and plants of northwestern Tibet. To Zhaxi, protecting the wildlife is a way of life. "We're not trying to save the animals," he says, "Actually, we're trying to save ourselves." Between the 1980s and 1990s, the population of the Tibetan antelope dropped by over 50 percent. People were shooting antelopes to make profits. Their living places were becoming smaller as new roads and railways were built. In order to save the animals, the Chinese government placed them under national protection. Zhaxi and other volunteers watched over the antelopes day and night to keep them safe from attacks. Bridges and gates were added to let the antelopes move easily and keep them safe from cars and trains. The measures were effective. The antelope population has recovered and in June 2015, the Tibetan antelope was removed from the list of animals in danger. The government, however, does not intend to stop the protection programs, since the threats (威胁) to the Tibetan antelope have not yet disappeared. Much is being done to protect wildlife but if we really want to save the planet, we must change our way of life. We can stop being a threat to wildlife and to our planet only when we learn to exist in peace with nature. 21. The author went to Tibet in order to ____. A. breathe fresh air in Tibet B. enjoy the scene in Tibet C. learn the history of Tibet D. observe Tibetan antelopes 22. Where does Zhaxi work? A. In Tibet. B. In Xinjiang. C. In Qinghai. D. In Sichuan. 23. What happened to the Tibetan antelope between the 1980s and 1990s? A. Tibetan antelopes were well protected. B. Tibetan antelopes' population dropped. C. Tibetan antelopes lived in peace with people. D. Tibetan antelopes destroyed new roads and railways. 24. According to Paragraph 6, the measures taken by the Chinese government were ____. A. useless B. basic C. successful D. simple 25. What's the purpose of the text? A. To kill the Tibetan antelope. B. To study the Tibetan antelope. C. To watch the Tibetan antelope. D. To protect the Tibetan antelope. B Nowadays, more and more young people have the chance to go to another country to study. Studying abroad will enable you to have various experiences. The best recommendation I'd like to give you is to be open to the experiences and the culture shock. Several common new experiences are around food, locations, culture, and language. Food: The food in a foreign country will not only be different from American food, but the cooking style will also be different. For example, while most American vegetables are usually boiled, which, as far as I'm concerned, is terrible! In China, where I studied, vegetables are often fried. China actually helped me like my former enemy, vegetables. So, have an open mind, and try the local food. Locations: In terms of locations, I mean that your study abroad location differs from your home location or college location. For example, coming from San Francisco and going to school at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts, was a location shock for me. I was not used to the very slow public transport and the need to drive. Culture: Having an open mind will benefit you the most. In a global education program, we had Chinese roommates, and my Mount Holyoke Class was mainly made up of Chinese graduate students. Therefore, hanging out with them was not too much trouble, but if finding local friends is not that easy, join clubs, sit at coffee shops, or start conversations at a gathering or party. Being interested in flea markets and art galleries, I looked online for those types of events and went to them. At these events, I met expatriates (侨民) and locals alike and became good friends with them. Another way to fit in with the culture is to find people who will go to cultural events and places with you. I would walk around Shanghai, taking in the Chinese culture everywhere I went. 26. Which of the following statement is true according to the passage? A. The writer felt it convenient to drive to school. B. The writer found it difficult to make friends with locals. C. The writer disliked vegetables prior to coming to China. D. You can participate in cultural events online to take in the Chinese culture. 27. We can infer from the passage that the writer ____. A. made only Chinese friends when in Shanghai B. kept an open mind when studying in China C. disliked his study experience in Massachusetts D. experienced Chinese culture by traveling everywhere 28. Who may be interested in the passage? A. Parents at home and abroad. B. Teachers teaching foreign languages. C. Students studying or to study abroad. D. Workers in service agencies. 29. Which will be mainly discussed in the following paragraph? A. Friends. B. Language. C. Study. D. Chinese culture. 30. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage? A. Make the Most of Your Experience When Studying Abroad B. Get Familiar with Chinese Culture C. Be Open to the Chinese Culture Shock D. My Wonderful Experience When Studying Abroad C Barditch High School decided to hold an All-School Reunion. Over 450 people came to the event. There were tours of the old school building and a picnic at Confederate Park. Several former teachers were on hand to tell stories about the old days. Ms. Mabel Yates, the English teacher for fifty years, was wheeled to the Park. Some eyes rolled and there were a few low groans (嘟囔声) when Ms. Yates was about to speak. Many started looking at their watches and coming up with excuses to be anywhere instead of preparing to listen to a lecture from an old woman who had few kind words for her students and made them work harder than all the other teachers combined. Then Ms. Yates started to speak: "I can't tell you how pleased I am to be here. I haven't seen many of you since your graduation, but I have followed your careers and enjoyed your victories as well as crying for your tragedies. I have a large collection of newspaper photographs of my students. Although I haven't appeared in person, I have attended your college graduations, weddings and even the birth of your children, in my imagination." Ms. Yates paused and started crying a bit. Then she continued: "It was my belief that if I pushed you as hard as I could, some of you would succeed to please me and others would succeed to annoy me. Regardless of our motives, I can see that you have all been successful in your chosen path." "There is no greater comfort for an educator than to see the end result of his or her years of work. You have all been a great source of pleasure and pride for me and I want you to know I love you all from the bottom of my heart." There was a silence over the crowd for a few seconds and then someone started clapping. The clapping turned into cheering, then into a deafening roar (呼喊). Lawyers, truck drivers, bankers and models were rubbing their eyes or crying openly with no shame all because of the words from a long forgotten English teacher from their hometown. 31. What activity was organized for the school reunion? A. Sightseeing in the park. B. A picnic on the school playground. C. Telling stories about past events. D. Graduates' reports in the old building. 32. What can be inferred from Paragraph 2? A. Some graduates were too busy to listen to Ms. Yates' speech. B. Many graduates disliked Ms. Yates' ways of teaching. C. Some people got tired from the reunion activities. D. Most people had little interest in the reunion. 33. A. kept track of her students' progress B. gave her students advice on their careers C. attended her students' college graduations D. went to her students' wedding ceremonies 34. What was Ms. Yates' belief in teaching teenagers? A. Teachers' knowledge is the key to students' achievements. B. Pressure on students from teachers should be reduced. C. Signing up for ESL (English as a Second Language) ESL courses are designed to help international students improve academic English language skills. Enrollment (课程注册) priority is given to degree students. If space is available, you may enroll. You will then be asked to take an ESL Placement Test. The test results will help you choose the class that is suitable for you. Changing Your Course Enrollment List You may change your class schedule during the first two weeks of the term by adding or dropping courses from your enrollment list. After the second week of classes, there will be a charge for each schedule change. Students often attend classes in which they are not enrolled on the first day of instruction to try adding this new course to the list, as other students may have dropped it. Withdrawing from Courses If you choose to drop a course, you must follow the UCLA procedures for removing it from your schedule. If you forget to officially drop that course, a "F" (Fail) grade will be registered on your record at the end of the term. If, at a later date, you wish to apply for a job or graduate school where an official copy of your UCLA record is required, it will be to your advantage to provide an impressive academic record. Taking Exams Some instructors choose to put previous test papers on library reserve, making them available to all students. These exams, which students commonly use for practice, can give you an idea of how instructors ask questions and what they regard as relevant material. You can also access the exams online. 36.
