Under the hot sun, a young girl jumped onto a tractor and started it. As it moved across the farmland, the dry ground was turned soft and ready for planting. She is Shen Yanfen, a post-90s new farmer.
Born in Guangzhou, Shen studied modern business management at university and once worked in Shenzhen. In 2020, she returned to her hometown because of her father. “My father was getting older. He hoped I could make his cooperative (合作社) stronger to help with farming,” she said.
At first, Shen’s new job was difficult. Local cooperative farmers didn’t think a girl from the city could farm. To make them believe in her, Shen learnt to operate the farm machines and took many farming courses. After a year, she became one of the first women to drive farm machines in her hometown.
While working, Shen noticed traditional farm work was slow. She wanted to make it modern, so she brought in new machines. She also trained a group of young people to use them. Later, her cooperative used machines for all farm work.
To make the farm work much more efficient, she brought five local cooperatives together and set up Guangzhou’s first agricultural machinery cooperative union. After about two years, it grew to eight members. With the union, farm teams worked together and were able to do bigger tasks in a shorter time. Under the leadership of Shen, the union made about 3, 000 mu of wasteland good for farming.
But Shen didn’t stop there. In 2023, Shen built a rice brand (品牌) with her team to sell their rice. They shared it on TV and online platforms. Soon, more people knew about the rice so farmers in the union made more money. Now Shen has a big dream: to turn the countryside into a great place for young people to achieve their own dreams.

Many teenagers close their books or give up easily when they meet difficulties again and again. They easily believe that their efforts are useless and finally stop challenging themselves. The common but harmful state of mind—giving up because of repeated failures—is called learned helplessness.
The idea was first proved by Seligman, a famous American psychologist, in his experiment in the 1960s. He put some dogs in a closed box with no way out. Then he gave the small electric (电的) shocks that the dogs could not avoid. Try as they might, the dogs could not run away or stop the pain. Later, Seligman opened a clear door in the box—the dogs could easily escape if they wanted. But surprisingly, they just lay there and gave up trying at all. The experiment showed that repeated failure could make living things lose the courage to try, whether animals or humans.
Such a state mainly comes from three kinds of wrong thinking. First, people hold a strong belief that they can hardly change the results no matter how hard they work. Second, they often connect failure with their own weaknesses but pay little attention to outside conditions, such as the environment or unexpected accidents. Third, they only see their mistakes but completely ignore the progress they have made. For example, a runner feels upset about not winning the running race but fails to notice his running speed has improved.
_________ He developed another idea “learned optimism*”, which means optimism can be learned and trained as a useful life skill. To help people learn it easily, he designed the ABCDE method.
Learned helplessness is not a final state. By using the ABCDE method, setting small and clear goals, and praising our own progress, we can build optimism little by little. Failure is not a final comment, but a chance for us to think and improve.
* optimism: a feeling that good things will happen and that something will be successful.
22. What did Seligman’s experiment in the 1960s show?
A. Dogs could easily escape from a closed box.
B. Electric shocks are very harmful to animals.
C. Repeated failure can make living things give up trying.
D. Animals are cleverer than humans in some ways.
23. The underlined word “ignore” in Paragraph 3 probably means “_________”.
A. pay no attention to B. take good care of C. find out D. look forward to
24. Which sentence can be put in the “__________”?
A. As a result, nobody wants to face their mistakes.
B. Besides, Seligman did more experiments on animals.
C. However, Seligman’s later research brought people hope.
D. Unluckily, Seligman found no useful ways to help people.
25. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. How Optimism Changes Our Life B. How to Deal with Failure in School
C. How to Overcome Learned Helplessness D. How Seligman’s Dogs Learned to Give Up

Dear Tom,
I’m glad to receive your email. Great changes have taken place in my hometown over the past 30 years.
As for shopping, people used to buy goods in small shops, while online shopping has become popular these days, which makes our daily life far more convenient. When it comes to travelling, public transport has greatly improved, so people can choose subways or shared bikes instead of walking.
Besides shopping and travelling, another amazing change lies in the environment. With more trees planted, the city looks much greener. All these changes have greatly influenced my life. It’s wonderful for me to live such a comfortable life.
I believe that my hometown will keep getting better.
