Ideas of making the first week of high school easy
Frank, Aged 21
I think almost every kid feels both nervous and excited before their first day of high school. But you will probably love it. I know I did. You should join some sports or activities that will make your high school experience more enjoyable. Good luck!
Sharon, Aged 22
The most important thing to keep in mind when going into high school is to be yourself. Besides, I don’t know what your middle school was like, but high school teachers will not care about things such as how much homework you already have in one night. It’s best to learn to deal with things and manage your time wisely so you can achieve everything you need to do.
Eddie, Aged 20
When I started high school, I was really nervous too, especially since I had been homeschooled (家中教学) all through middle school and didn’t really know anyone. I suppose the best advice would be to just relax. The first couple of days can be a little bit hard, but things will become easier before you know it.
David, Aged 19
I’m not going to lie. The first day is kind of frightening. But you’ll get used to it. Don’t be afraid of anyone; upperclassmen (高年级学生) will pick on you more if you let them know you’re afraid. Just take it easy. Making some friends and staying with them will greatly help you get used to high school quickly. After the first week it’s really not bad at all. Don’t worry.
1. What can we infer (推断) from Sharon about high school?
A. Teachers are quite strict.
B. Students often stay up at night.
C. Teachers provide much care for students.
D. Students should make good use of their time.

A. Bored. B. Excited. C. Worried. D. Relaxed.
3. Who mentions the importance of friends?

About two weeks ago, Meyer, a local person who lives in Berlin, noticed that one of his new running shoes had disappeared from his porch, and he decided to examine the thief.

There is a popular saying in the English language: “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” Well, that is not true. Unkind words, name-calling or even the so-called “the silent treatment” can hurt children as much as being physically hit, sometimes even more so. A recent study of middle school children showed that verbal (言语的) abuse by other children can harm, the development in the brain. The study was a project of researchers at Harvard Medical School in Massachusetts. Researcher Martin Teicher and his team studied young adults, aged 18 to 25. These young men and women had not ever been treated in a cruel or violent way by their parents. The researchers asked the young people to rate their childhood exposure to verbal abuse from both parents and other children. Then the researchers performed imaging tests on the brains of the subjects.
The images showed that the people who reported suffering verbal abuse from peers in middle school had underdeveloped connections between the left and right side of the brain. The two sides of the brain are connected by a large bundle of connecting fibers called the corpus callosum. This was the area that was underdeveloped.
The middle school years are a time when these brain connections are developing. So, unkind, hurtful comments from children or adults during this period have the greatest effect. The researchers tested the mental and emotional condition of all the young people in the study. The tests showed that this same group of people had higher levels of fear, depression, anger and drug abuse than others in the study.
The researchers published their findings online on the American Journal of Psychiatry's website.
Parents cannot control what other people say to their children, but they can prepare their children.
8. Why does the author use the popular saying at the beginning?
A. To show the power of words.
B. To introduce an opposite view.
C. To prove the author's argument.
D. To show ancient people's wisdom.
9. What did the people studied in the research have in common?
A. They were hurt by unkind words.
B. They performed poorly in imaging tests.
C. They had their brain slightly damaged.
D. They experienced no physical abuse at home.
10. What will be discussed in the next paragraph?
A. Comments on the findings.
B. Approaches to further studies.
C. Suggestions to parents.
D. Different opinions on the matter.
11. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Unkind words hurt the brain.
B. Verbal violence should be stopped.
C. The way we speak matters.
D. Words are worse than sticks and stones.
D
For some students, getting better grades can seem like an impossible task sometimes. With the challenges of school, just paying attention in class or studying hard isn’t always enough. But what if there were other ways for students to improve their grades? For parents and students who have ever wondered if this is possible, now you can rest easy. Research suggests that students who like doing activities can improve their grades.
Scientists think that those students who are active are not just exercising their bodies, but also exercising their brains. In turn, they are able to improve their grades at school.
In the most recent study, researchers found that when children played for half an hour each day, they were better at organizing their schoolwork as well as doing project work and learning traditionally “difficult” subjects, such as maths.
What does this mean for children who aren’t active? Researchers think that if kids don’t get enough activities, they are going to be at a disadvantage when it comes to school performance.
In the research experiment, a group of children skipped with ropes, played basketball and played a number of other games. Another group of children didn’t do any activities. They took part in testing both before and after the experiment. Tests were mainly for maths and reading skills. Results showed that the children in the activity group did better on the tests than those who did no activity.
All work and no play will not only make Jack a dull (迟钝的) boy, but will also negatively affect his grades in school, according to a new study published in the Journal of Pediatrics.
Parents complain (抱怨) that children today are actually less active than before and they always worry about their grades. Dr. Belton, an expert, said, “If you’d like to see your kids do better in school, have them close their books, put down their pencils and go outside to play.”
12. Which kind of children is better at organizing their schoolwork in the most recent study?
A. Children who study all the time.
B. Children who play for half an hour every day.
C. Children who finish their homework on time.
D. Children who do some reading after class every day.
13. To help children get better grades, parents should _________.
A. ask the researchers for help B. help them to organize their schoolwork
C. encourage them to do more activities D. let them solve problems by themselves
14. What is the author’s attitude towards the children who devote all the time to studying?
A. Indifferent B. Favorable C. Negative D. Unclear
15. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Studying Hard B. Taking Part in Testing
C. Doing Activities Is Interesting D. Being Active Is Helpful for Better Grades
