Maggie Doyne is caring for and educating helpless children and orphans in rural Nepal. What started with a plot of land that she purchased with her babysitting money has become a global model for poverty relief and development through her nonprofit, BlinkNow Foundation.
After high school, Doyne began her work after meeting a young girl in Surkhet, Nepal, whose life was ruined during the country’s decades-long civil conflict. Today, Doyne cares for 93 children, addressing their immediate needs and supporting them for long-term growth and self-sufficiency.
The organization also has a separate home for at-risk girls who have been victims of harm, human trafficking (贩卖) and violence, a food and farming program that trains women and farmers, and a full-service medical clinic. Doyne and a team of 175 caregivers, teachers, and professionals work together to offer comprehensive services that address the roots of poverty.
Her Kopila Valley School, once a small “bamboo shack (棚屋)”, has now served 1,000 students with state-of-the-art facilities, modern technology, and diverse course offerings. Students participate in gardening, farming, and conservation classes and are provided healthy meals to address poor nutrition. There is a daycare, as well as a readiness program called “Futures” to launch students toward college and job training programs.
At a speaking engagement in Los Angeles, Doyne connected with a filmmaker who shared a passion for humanitarian causes and storytelling. He started documenting Doyne’s work and life story. And the two began a journey together, professionally and personally. Now married, they raise their children in Nepal among their 93 siblings (兄弟姊妹).
Hope and action are ideas that Doyne made a reality two decades ago. And today, her message remains: “Keep doing what you can, no matter where you are. Keep showing up, keep loving, and keep going with your acts of kindness. It all matters.”
24. Where did Doyne’s early fund for charity land come from?
A. Donations from a filmmaker. B. Income from school students.
C. Earnings from her former job. D. Support from medical workers.
25. What inspired Doyne to start charity work in Nepal?
A. A speech about global poverty relief. B. An encounter with a girl in Surkhet.
C. A bamboo school built by local farmers. D. A medical clinic for homeless children.
26. What is the “Futures” program designed for?
A. Training local women in farming skills. B. Offering medical treatment for poor girls.
C. Building modern classrooms for rural children. D. Preparing teenagers for further study and career.
27. Which of the following can best describe Doyne’s approach to poverty relief?
A. Systematic and sustainable. B. All-sided and imaginary.
C. Personalized and traditional. D. Accidental and immoral.

Cities and towns are usually 1–3℃ hotter than the surrounding countryside, because asphalt, concrete and brick absorb heat from the sun and radiate it slowly. Known as the urban heat island (UHI), this effect can be dangerous and even deadly. There’s one simple solution: urban trees. Authorities have planted more trees to reduce the heat. But how effective is this?
To find out, we analysed data from nearly 9,000 cities around the world, home to about 3.6 billion people. Our new research shows that trees almost halve how much heat is trapped by the UHI effect.
Trees act like natural air conditioners, shading the ground and stopping asphalt and buildings from heating up in the first place. They also cool the air by releasing water vapour (蒸气) from their leaves in a process called transpiration, lowering surrounding temperatures. The effect they have is noticeable.
Globally, trees cut the UHI effect by almost 50%. Since the average UHI effect typically adds around 1-3℃, this translates into cooling of roughly 0.5-1.5℃ in many cities. For more than 200 million people, trees reduce local air temperatures by at least 0.5℃, enough to make a meaningful difference during extreme heat.
This cooling is welcome, but there is a catch. Trees are not evenly distributed. They’re often concentrated in wealthier neighbourhoods and suburban areas. Cities in more humid climates tend to have more. Leafy suburbs are usually several degrees cooler than nearby neighbourhoods with little vegetation. Also, there’s a strong link with wealth. In the United States, lower-income areas average 15% fewer trees than wealthier areas — and are 1.5℃ hotter. This means the people who need free cooling from trees the most are often the least likely to receive it.
Planting trees is often promoted as a simple solution to city heat. Our study shows their effect is more limited in the face of climate change. The world’s current urban trees would, we estimate, offset just 10% of the extra heat expected by mid-century under moderate climate change scenarios (设想). With ambitious planting, this could rise to just around 20%.
28. What is the purpose of the research mentioned in the text?
A. To find out the causes of the UHI effect.
B. To introduce the concept of the UHI effect.
C. To compare regional temperature differences.
D. To assess the effectiveness of trees in fighting heat.
29. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The statistical evidence of a finding. B. The practical application of a theory.
C. The natural mechanism of an approach. D. The basic explanation of a phenomenon.
30. What do the underlined words “a catch” in paragraph 5 most probably mean?
A. A rare chance. B. An ethical dilemma. C. A useful method. D. A hidden difficulty.
31. What should be done according to our study?
A. More attention should be paid to climate change.
B. It is time to abandon planting trees to fight urban heat.
C. A large majority of extra heat needs to be removed otherwise.
D. The even distribution of trees will become an alternative initiative.

Athletic footwear has entered a new era of ambition. No longer content to promise just comfort or performance, Nike claims its shoes can activate the brain, heighten sensory awareness and even improve concentration by stimulating the bottom of the feet.
“By studying perception, attention, and sensory feedback, we’re using the brain-body connection in new ways,” said Nike’s chief science officer. “It’s not just about running faster; it’s about feeling more focused and resilient.”
It’s a convincing idea: The feet are rich in sensory receptors, so could stimulating them really sharpen the mind? Neuroscience suggests the reality is more complicated — and far less dramatic — than the marketing implies.
The bottom of the feet contains thousands of mechanoreceptors that detect pressure, vibration and movement. Signals from these receptors travel through nerves up to an area of the brain called the somatosensory cortex, which maintains a map of the body. The feet occupy a meaningful part of this map, reflecting their importance in balance, posture, and movement. Because posture and movement are tightly linked to attention and stimulation, changes in sensory feedback from the feet can influence how stable, alert or sensible a person feels.
In view of this, neurologists and physicians pay close attention to footwear in patients with balance disorders, neuropathy, or gait problems. Changing sensory input can alter (改变) how people move. But is influencing movement the same thing as enhancing cognition?
Sensory input from the feet activates somatosensory regions of the brain, not meaning cognitive enhancement. Focus, attention, and executive function depend on distributed networks involving various other areas of the brain. They also rely on hormones that adjust the nervous system, such as dopamine and norepinephrine.
Some studies suggest that mild sensory input may increase alertness in specific populations, such as older adults training to improve their balance or people in recovery from sensory loss, but these effects are modest and highly dependent on context. The most meaningful “mind-altering” effects a person can experience through physical fitness still come from sustained movement, training, sleep and attention, not from sense alone. Footwear may shape how the journey feels, but it is unlikely to change the destination.
32. What is the feature of Nike’s shoes in its claim?
A. Offering treatment for patients. B. Stressing comfort and performance.
C. Enhancing wearers’ cognition. D. Proving the brain-body connection.
33. What can we learn from Paragraph 4?
A. The feet occupy the largest part in the brain’s body map.
B. Foot-sensory signals can bring a certain sense of alertness.
C. Mechanoreceptors are created inside people’s athletic footwear.
D. Somatosensory cortex is mainly responsible for hormone release.
34. Which of the following might neurologists agree with?
A. Shoes may not change real cognitive ability.
B. Nike has opened a new era of sports science.
C. Solid evidence can help Nike expand the market.
D. All mind-altering effects come from footwear.
35. What can be implied from the last sentence of the text?
A. Nike’s claim is partially overstated.
B. Keeping fit is a final destination in life.
C. The shape of footwear may be tailored.
D. A long journey begins with suitable shoes.

Imagine you’re a kid in an elementary school. You have spent all morning learning new words and practicing multiplication. Then finally, it is time for a break. You run out of the stuffy school building, only to find a large area of burning hot blacktop. ___36___. Due to decades of paving entire schoolyards to reduce maintenance costs, this is the reality for thousands of city school children. Lamont was one of them.
Lack of access to nature does more than reduce social and emotional well-being. Asphalt (沥青) surfaces absorb and give off more heat, creating the “heat island effect,” which can negatively impact human health. ___37___. When rainwater washes these substances away, they end up polluting rivers and streams.
However, thanks to Reflo and his partners, these lifeless blacktops are being replaced with rich natural environments where kids can learn and play. During the three-year design process, each school chooses which natural elements they want to include, from pollinator (传粉者) gardens to soccer fields to micro-forests. Most schools will include a bioswale (低洼地) that manages stormwater. ___38___. The new schoolyards are built over the summer to minimize the impact on the academic year, and the habitats support wildlife, like butterflies and bees.
“___39___,” said Lamont. “Thousands of young people, including some of the most socially and economically disadvantaged children, will have significantly better experiences, and they can take a lot of pride in their schools.”
Schoolyards are the best strategic investment for environmental improvement. ___40___. These benefits, in turn, contribute to improved academic performance. What’s more, once the school day is over, the schoolyards are open to the public and serve as community parks.
A. They also concentrate pollutants
B. Reflo’s work is truly transformational
C. They will also add outdoor classrooms
D. There isn’t a single tree or any grass in sight
E. The flat surface seems perfect for playing games
F. Nature reduces stress and boosts creative thinking
G. These surfaces prevent water from entering the ground

Alex had recently become fascinated by a new project. He wanted to design an app that could identify different birds by their songs. Every afternoon after school, he sat at his desk wearing headphones, listening to one recording after another. Whenever the program confused one bird with another, he replayed the recording, adjusted the code, and tested it again. He was so buried in his digital world that when a real bird began to sing outside his open window one day, he found the sound distracting and simply shut the window.
The project soon became part of Alex’s daily routine. He planned to present the app at the school science fair, so every new recording felt like another puzzle to solve. Some bird calls sounded almost identical, and the program often mixed them up. Instead of going outside, Alex searched online for more recordings and larger databases. The more data he collected, the more confident he became.
Alex often shared his progress with his grandfather, a retired forest ranger (护林员) who had spent most of his life studying birds in the woods. Grandpa was pleased by the project but seemed more concerned about how Alex was learning. When Alex proudly mentioned his thousands of recordings, Grandpa asked whether he had ever listened to birds outside. Alex shook his head; online recordings were clearer and easier to analyze. Grandpa smiled and said, “Looking up isn’t the same as looking.” Alex didn’t quite understand.
Two weeks before the science fair, Ms. Chen, the science teacher, asked Alex to test his app with recordings from a nearby nature reserve. Confident in his program, Alex expected good results. But it identified the wrong birds and became confused when two birds sang at the same time. The model worked almost perfectly with downloaded recordings but struggled with sounds from the real world.
After class, Ms. Chen wrote on Alex’s report: A good model should begin with good observations.
That evening, Alex told Grandpa about the comment. Grandpa looked at him and asked, “Would you like to find out what your recordings have been missing?”

M: How come?
W: He says it takes too long. He likes to look at the listening script first. If he does that, it’s only reading practice instead of listening practice.
M: Oh, this is indeed a problem.
W: Exactly. I don’t expect every word to be right. I just want him to try before checking the text. However, I don’t want him to feel forced. Would he accept a smaller task?

C
【答案】28. D 29. A 30. D 31. C
【解析】
【导语】本文介绍了城市热岛效应,研究表明树木可以有效降温,但树木分布不均,并且面对气候变化,树木的降温效果存在局限。
【28题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“Authorities have planted more trees to reduce the heat. But how effective is this? (政府种了更多树来降温,但这到底效果如何?)”及第二段“To find out, we analysed data from nearly 9,000 cities around the world (为了找到答案,我们分析了全球近9000座城市的数据)”可知,这项研究的目的是评估树木对抗高温的实际效果。
【29题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段“Globally, trees cut the UHI effect by almost 50%. Since the average UHI effect typically adds around 1-3℃, this translates into cooling of roughly 0.5-1.5℃ in many cities. For more than 200 million people, trees reduce local air temperatures by at least 0.5℃ (在全球范围,树木削弱近50%的热岛效应。一般热岛效应会增温1到3摄氏度,这意味着很多城市降温大约0.5至1.5摄氏度。对超过2亿人来说,树木让当地气温至少下降了0.5℃)”可知,本段用一系列数据为树木的降温效果提供统计证据。
【30题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第五段“This cooling is welcome, but there is a catch . Trees are not evenly distributed. (这种降温效果很不错,但是存在个……。树木分布并不均匀)”及下文介绍贫富区域树木数量差异可知,树木分布不均是一个隐藏的困难/隐患。此处catch跟“hidden difficulty (隐藏的难题)”意义相近。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据第六段“Our study shows their effect is more limited in the face of climate change. The world’s current urban trees would, we estimate, offset just 10% of the extra heat...With ambitious planting, this could rise to just around 20%. (我们的研究显示,面对气候变化,树木作用有限。现有城市树木仅抵消10%额外增温……大规模种树也只能到大约20%。)”可推知,大部分额外热量还需要依靠别的方式消除。
D
【答案】32. C 33. B 34. A 35. A

【导语】本文介绍了耐克宣称新款鞋可通过刺激足底提升认知,神经学方面的研究指出其效果微弱,真正改善认知需靠长期运动等,鞋子的作用被营销夸大。
【32题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“No longer content to promise just comfort or performance, Nike claims its shoes can activate the brain, heighten sensory awareness and even improve concentration by stimulating the bottom of the feet.(耐克不再满足于承诺舒适或性能,而是宣称其鞋款能够通过刺激足底来激活大脑、增强感官意识,甚至提升专注力)”可知,耐克宣称自家鞋子不局限于传统的舒适、运动表现属性,还能通过刺激足底激活大脑、提升感知甚至改善专注力,而这些都属于认知能力提升的范畴。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Because posture and movement are tightly linked to attention and stimulation, changes in sensory feedback from the feet can influence how stable, alert or sensible a person feels.(由于姿势和运动与注意力和刺激密切相关,足部感觉反馈的变化会影响一个人感到的稳定度、警觉性或感知能力)”可知,来自足部的感官反馈变化会影响人感到警觉的程度,和B选项表述吻合。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“But is influencing movement the same thing as enhancing cognition?(但影响运动是否等同于提升认知功能呢)”及第七段“Some studies suggest that mild sensory input may increase alertness in specific populations, such as older adults training to improve their balance or people in recovery for sensory loss, but these effects are modest and highly dependent on context.(一些研究表明,轻微的感觉输入可能在特定人群中提高警觉性,例如正在训练以改善平衡的老年群体,或正从感官丧失中恢复的人群。
【答案】36. D 37. A 38. C 39. B 40. F

【答案】参考答案:
The Ability We Need for Life Ahead
Academic grades matter, but they are far from everything. In my opinion, the most important ability beyond grades is communication.
First, good communication helps us build strong relationships with others, which is essential for both work and daily life. Second, it allows us to express our ideas clearly and solve problems more effectively. When we face challenges, talking openly with others often brings new solutions and support. Finally, communication is the foundation of teamwork, which is highly valued in almost every career.
Therefore, I believe we should develop this ability through group activities and daily practice.

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The next morning, Alex followed Grandpa into the woods where he had worked.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Two weeks later, Alex was ready for the science fair.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
The next morning, Alex followed Grandpa into the woods where he had worked. The forest was alive with sound, but not the kind Alex was used to. Grandpa whispered, “Close your eyes. Just listen.” Alex obeyed. At first, he heard only noise. Then he began to pick out different songs — a sharp whistle here, a soft trill there. Grandpa pointed to a small brown bird. “That’s a wren. Listen to how it repeats itself.” Alex recorded it, along with the setting, the time, and the bird’s behavior. For the first time, he felt a quiet sense of wonder at what his downloaded recordings had been missing: the life behind the sound.
Two weeks later, Alex was ready for the science fair. His app now used real recordings from the woods. When judges tested it with live birds, it identified them correctly, even when two sang at once. Alex explained how observing birds in nature had taught him what no database could. He won second prize, and a surge of pride filled his chest. But more importantly, he understood Grandpa’s words: “Looking up isn’t the same as looking.” True understanding begins with paying attention to the real world around us.
