Thanks to a high school robotics team, a tiny dog named Kanga-Roo who lost her front two legs at birth is walking on her own.
The tiny dog, called “Roo” for short, first made news when she was dropped off at the Heart of Louisiana Humane Society in late 2023. Without her front legs, she had to adapt (适应) to jumping on her back legs for moving around. So the Steel Eagles Robotics Team at Holy Savior Menard Central High School in Louisiana put their minds to work and began building a special type of wheelchair that gives Roo two wheels in place of her front legs. For the students, seeing their design work in real life was an exciting experience.
The team fitted Roo with her first wheelchair in October 2023 using a 3D printer. The dog ran into trouble while learning how to walk in the new setup, but she has adapted well. She has already outgrown her first wheelchair and is working on her second. The team will keep building new sizes until Roo is fully grown.
The students and the Humane Society members have been working to teach Roo how to use her wheelchair. While she hasn’t mastered it yet, she is getting close. “She was scared at first but she’s getting more comfortable in it and it has become a lot easier for her to move freely,” the organization’s president, Kristy Royall, said. “It’s wonderful to see technology used in such a caring way,” she added.
Kanga-Roo’s wheelchair is one of many projects the Steel Eagles Robotics Team has built for people or animals in need. According to coach Tonya Shepard, it is their goal to contribute to (做贡献) the community and do things that are actually helpful to the community.
4. What did the robotics team do for the dog Roo?
A. They built a comfortable shelter for her.
B. They taught her how to jump with back legs.
C. They designed a movable wheelchair for her.
D. They provided medical treatment for her legs.
5. What does the underlined word “outgrown” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Become larger than. B. Got tired of.
C. Made use of. D. Looked forward to.
6. What does the author think of the team’s effort?
A. It is challenging. B. It is meaningful.
C. It is under-recognized. D. It is experimental.
7. Why does the robotics team undertake projects like Roo’s wheelchair?
A. To win robotics competitions. B. To gain experience in animal care.
C. To improve their 3D printing skills. D. To give back to their community.

Parents of teenagers often view their children’s friends with doubt, worrying that their children will be pushed by their peers (同龄人) into doing something silly or even dangerous. Their worries make sense. In a previous study, psychologist Laurence Steinberg found that a teenage driver with a same-age passenger in the car is at higher risk of traffic accidents than one driving alone or with an adult.
In the following years, Steinberg examined why teens were more likely to take risks in the company of other teenagers. In a later study, by scanning (扫描) the brains of 40 teens and adults, Steinberg found the brains of teenagers, but not adults, showed greater activity in two parts related to rewards (奖赏) when they were being watched by same-age peers. The reward systems of the brain start working whenever people experience something rewarding, like eating a nice-tasting food, which makes them feel good. In this case, rewards are greater for teens, which makes them want to seek higher-risk experiences.
But Steinberg thought peer pressure might also have its positive side. In the latest study, Steinberg’s team used a card game to research how peers influence the way young people gather and apply information. It included 101 teenage boys who played either alone or with three peers. They chose cards from four decks (牌堆): two decks had “good” cards, and two “bad” ones. Players with peers were more willing to take risks, trying to figure out which decks could help them to win. The results showed that teens playing with their peers do more exploratory behavior, learn faster and achieve better performance on the task than those playing alone.
Now some experts are suggesting that we should take advantage of the teens’ strong sensitivity (敏感性) to the presence of friends to improve education. “Risk taking in an educational setting is a very important skill that enables progress and creativity,” wrote Sarah Jayne Blakemore, a professor at University College London.
8. What does the author want to say by mentioning Steinberg’s study?
A. Parents’ worries are reasonable. B. Teens drive more carelessly with peers.
C. Adults are better drivers than teens. D. Peer pressure only brings harm.
9. What is the reason behind teens’ dangerous behavior?
A. Inability to tell right from wrong. B. A sense of satisfaction.
C. Eagerness to follow their friends. D. Lack of social experience.
10. How does risk-taking influence teens in the latest study?
A. It starts fights between them. B. It inspires them to question.
C. It weakens their independence. D. It helps them to learn better.
11. What does Blakemore think of involving peers in learning?
A. Helpful. B. Unnecessary. C. Risky. D. Challenging.
D
Hollywood may have warned about the risks of building up relationships with artificial intelligence (AI), but one computer scientist says we may be missing a trick if we do not accept the positives that human-machine relationships have to offer.
Tony Prescott, a professor of robotics at the University of Sheffield, argues that AI has an important role to play in preventing human loneliness. Just as we develop meaningful relationships with pets, and have no doubt about children playing with dolls, so we should be open to the value of AI to adults, he says.
“Human loneliness is often described as a cycle in which loneliness leads to lower self-worth, which discourages (阻拦,使泄气) further communication with people.” Prescott writes in a new book The Psychology of Artificial Intelligence. “There may be ways in which AI companionship (陪伴) could help break it by strengthening feelings of self-worth and helping maintain or improve social skills. If so, relationships with AIs could support people to find companionship with human and artificial others.”
With more than a third of Americans reporting “serious loneliness”, the loneliness problem has become clear in recent years. Whether AI can, or should, be part of the solution is not a new debate. Sherry Turkle, a professor of social science at MIT, has warned that forming relationships with machines could backfire (事与愿违), and lead people to have fewer secure and satisfying human relationships.
Murali Doraiswamy, a professor of medicine at Duke University, said: “Right now, all the evidence points to having a close human friend as the best solution to loneliness. But until society put social connectedness on top of the list, robots are a solution for the millions of people who have no friends.”
Researchers may soon know whether people turn to AI for company. Tech firms are building chatbots to be ever more responsive to emotions. This week, OpenAI asked Scarlett Johansson to be the voice of their latest chatbot, GPT-4o, to “help consumers to feel comfortable”. Johansson refused, but the chatbot came onto the market with a voice that friends and family thought was hers.
12. Why are the pets and dolls mentioned in paragraph 2?
A. To show the meaningful relationship between AI and children.
B. To stress the limitations of human-AI relationships in daily life.
C. To display the potential for AI to provide similar companionship.
D. To suggest the possibility for AI to replace traditional companions.
13. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The continued failure of human relationships with AI.
B. The pattern of loneliness, lower self-worth and further loneliness.
C. The repeated use of AI and others for companionship.
D. The process of developing human self-worth and social skills.
14. Who expressed concern that AI companionship could weaken human connections?
A. Tony Prescott. B. Scarlett Johansson.
C. Murali Doraiswamy. D. Sherry Turkle.
15. Which question does the passage mainly focus on?
A. Could AI contribute to increased loneliness?
B. Will AI companionship replace human interaction?
C. Can AI be used as an effective solution to loneliness?
D. Is AI companionship better than traditional relationships?
Teach others to learn
Have you ever explained a hard idea to a classmate? Did you find that you understood it better after teaching? This is called “teaching to learn”. It works better than many old-style study methods. ____16____ But many students do not know how powerful it is. Actually, teaching others brings several key benefits to your own learning journey.
____17____ When you need to explain a topic to someone else, you can’t just rely on vague (模糊的) ideas in your head. You have to pick out key points, connect related concepts, and present them in a logical order. This process helps you spot gaps in your own understanding that you might have missed when studying alone.
Teaching also helps strengthen knowledge through repetition. When teaching something to someone else, a person has to basically go over that material multiple times, until the other person understands it. ____18____ The more you go over it, the more long-lasting your understanding becomes.
Another advantage is that teaching helps you see a topic from different angles. ____19____ Then you have to look at the topic differently to find the answer. This helps the learner. It also opens your own mind. You move from a shallow understanding to a deep one.
You do not need to be an expert to teach. Even small teaching moments matter. ____20____ You can lead a study group for history. You can explain a science experiment to your younger sibling. Every time you teach, you make your own learning stronger. So teaching is not just being kind-it is a powerful way to learn for yourself.
A. You can help a friend with math.
B. Teaching forces you to organize your thoughts clearly.
C. But teaching may push them out of their comfort zone.
D. It improves critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
E. The learner may ask a question you never thought about.
F. This practice firmly settles that knowledge in your own memory.
G. This special way of learning helps both the student and the teacher.

C 5. A 6. B 7. D

A 9. B 10. D 11. A

根据第一段“Parents of teenagers often view their children’s friends with doubt, worrying that their children will be pushed by their peers (同龄人) into doing something silly or even dangerous. Their worries make sense. In a previous study, psychologist Laurence Steinberg found that a teenage driver with a same-age passenger in the car is at higher risk of traffic accidents than one driving alone or with an adult.(青少年的父母常常对孩子的朋友心存疑虑,他们担心孩子会被同龄人驱使去做一些愚蠢甚至危险的事情。他们的担忧是有道理的。在之前的一项研究中,心理学家劳伦斯·斯坦伯格发现,与同龄人一同乘车的青少年司机发生交通事故的风险要高于独自驾车或与成年人一同驾车的司机)”可知,作者提及斯坦伯格的研究是想表达父母们的担忧是有道理的。故选A。
根据第二段中“The reward systems of the brain start working whenever people experience something rewarding, like eating a nice-tasting food, which makes them feel good. In this case, rewards are greater for teens, which makes them want to seek higher-risk experiences.(当人们体验到一些有益的东西时,大脑的奖励系统就会被激活,比如吃到美味的食物,这会让他们感觉很好。在这种情况下,青少年获得的奖励更大,这促使他们寻求更高风险的体验)”可知,青少年之所以会有危险行为,是因为他们寻求奖励,寻求满足感,所以获得满足感是青少年危险行为背后的原因。故选B。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Players with peers were more willing to take risks, trying to figure out which decks could help them to win. The results showed that teens playing with their peers do more exploratory behavior, learn faster and achieve better performance on the task than those playing alone.(有同伴的玩家更愿意冒险,试图找出哪些牌组可以帮助他们获胜。结果表明,与同龄人一起玩的青少年比单独玩的青少年更有探索行为,学习速度更快,在任务中表现更好)”可知,在最新的研究中,有同伴的玩家更愿意冒险,而这种冒险可以帮助青少年学得更快,表现更好。故选D。

C 13. B 14. D 15. C

G 17. B 18. F 19. E 20. A

故填to。
故填a。
故填to expect。

根据空后的“is my hope that”可知,此处用固定句型“it is+名词+that…” 故填It。
故填which。

Dear Jim,
I’m sorry to hear that you have an unpleasant conflict with your classmate because of a misunderstanding. I can fully understand how upset you are.
What I suggest is that you talk with him face to face as soon as possible, which is the best way to clear up the misunderstanding. A heart-to-heart talk often works magic between friends. If you are too nervous at first, you can write him a short note to show your sincerity. True communication can help both of you know the real thought of each other. Besides, you should stay calm when you communicate, because anger will make things worse.
I hope that you two can get on well again soon.
