His business goal. B. His family’s advice. C. His frequent moves. 12. What is special about the jeans the man shows? A. They’re from a friend. B. They’re from a historical era. C. They’re made by his grandpa. 13. What fascinates the man most about collecting? A. The stories behind the objects. B. The history of the collecting trade. C. The variety of rare items collected. C 12. B 13. W: Where did you get all this stuff? It looks like a museum! M: I’m a collector by passion and profession. I’ve spent years tracking down rare objects. It started as a hobby and eventually became my career. W: Is it a family business? M: Not quite. But my family history played a role. We moved a lot when I was a kid. I wanted to keep something from each place so I wouldn’t forget. That turned into collecting and led to this business. W: I’ve never learned much about the collecting trade, but I’m fascinated by each piece’s story. Could you share a favorite? M: Absolutely. Check out these jeans. They’re unlike ordinary pairs you’d find in a shop. I once lived near an old gold mining town in the U.S., where a famous jeans brand first made jeans for miners. A friend’s grandfather bought this pair from a museum and gave them to me. They’re original ones from the 1800s Gold Rush era! W: This everyday item holds so much history! M: This is where my passion truly lies. Every item can carry a story that connects us to the past. 14. What is the relationship between the two speakers? A. Co-workers. B. Manager and employee. C. Shop assistant and customer. 15. What may be a result of the introduction to new self-service machines? A. Customers will need to be trained. B. Technicians will be highly needed. C. Some staff will have new responsibilities. 16. How does the man sound? A. Confused. B. Optimistic. C. Concerned. A 15. C 16. M: Have you heard, Mindy? They’re bringing in new self-service machines next month. W: Yes, I saw the email from the manager. No more manned checkouts. M: Well, there will still be a few for customers who need help. W: Yes, but most people will probably use the machines. It’ll mean fewer staff on the checkouts. M: Do you think some people might lose their jobs? W: Maybe, but they said they would move staff to different roles, like helping customers with the machines, stocking shelves, and working at the service desk. M: That makes sense. But what about training? Do we all have to learn how to fix the machines? W: Not exactly. One technician will handle repairs, but we’ll need to know basic troubleshooting. M: So, if a customer’s payment doesn’t go through, we’d have to sort it out? W: Yes. M: I hope customers won’t get upset. Some people don’t like using machines. W: That’s why they’re keeping some staffed checkouts. But overall, it should speed things up. M: I suppose we’ll have to wait and see. M: Usually, new things bring a sense of excitement to people, but when I first moved to this school four years ago, I felt like a complete outsider. My grades were poor, and I lacked direction and interest. My poor mom felt upset because she didn’t know what to do with me! But over time, with guidance from teachers and classmates, things started changing. Coach Lu saw my soccer potential. Roy, the guy who’s since become my best friend, helped improve my grades. Eventually, I even became school council president. But what makes me feel proudest is creating the schoolmate support program. Community is important, so my duty is to form positive relationships between junior and senior students. I wouldn’t be graduating today without others helping me to believe in myself. They showed me everyone has the power to rewrite their stories. It’s never too late to change your life, your interests, or your path. The key lies in accepting assistance when you need it. I’m proof that it can completely change your life. A NAME OF COURSE: Visual Arts INSTRUCTOR: Dr. Jerri Benton COURSE DESCRIPTION: In the visual arts courses students will develop basic art skills necessary to communicate a range of subject matter, symbols, ideas and concepts using knowledge of the appropriate art media, processes and techniques. When I say “old books”, I don’t mean classics, though. I mean books with yellow pages, broken spines (书脊) and odd wood-like smells that you need to be careful not to break because they are already so worn down and bring you severe discomfort. One can assume that I didn’t own many old books. I had merely a few here and there that my parents had gifted me, but nothing too special. In the fourth grade, I was ready to explore a new world of reading, one that went beyond the likes of children’s chapter books and teenagers’ topics. Just then, I found my parents’ old copies of the entire Harry Portter book series. Visually, my parents’ books were my worst nightmare. I remember thinking to myself that there was no way I would be able to read these books. However. I eventually had to accept the fact that if I wanted to read the series. I would have to read my parents’ copies. So I began the terrible journey of reading seven old books. When it was time for me to read the final copy, I was kind of a changed woman. I still strongly disliked old books, but the plot of the entire Harry Potter series had attracted me so much that I had almost entirely forgotten what the books looked like. Now, I love old books. While the covers are sometimes so worn down that you can barely read the title of the book, you can understand what it’s about anyway. After all, an old book is a representation of generations of readers who have chosen to live in a specific fictional world because the story it contains is just that good. Old books have meaning and I love how much they mean to me now. 24. What can we learn about the author from the first paragraph? A. She felt uneasy about owning old books. B. She had a bad relationship with her parents. C. She was passionate for reading classics. D. She was often gifted old books by her parents. 25. How did the author feel when seeing her parents’ Harry Potter series in the fourth grade? A. Confused. B. Inspired. C. Discouraged. D. Astonished. 26. What does the author mean by saying “I was kind of a changed woman” in paragraph 3? A. She started to enjoy reading fictional books. B. She began to ignore the appearance of the books. C. She accepted putting old books on her shelf. D. She figured out what she truly wanted to read. 27. What is the best title for the text? A. My Passion for Reading B. My Connection with Parents via Old Books C. My Encounter with the Harry Potter Series D. My Journey with Old Books 【答案】24. A 25. C 26. B 27. 根据第一段中“I used to hate old books. When I say “old books”, I don’t mean classics, though. I mean books with yellow pages, broken spines (书脊) and odd wood-like smells that you need to be careful not to break because they are already so worn down and bring you severe discomfort.(我过去讨厌旧书。不过,我说的“旧书”并不是指经典作品。我指的是那些有黄页、断了书脊、散发着木头味的书,你必须小心不要把它们弄破,因为它们已经磨损得很厉害了,会给你带来严重的不适)”可知,对作者来说,拥有旧书是一件令人不舒服、不自在的事。故选A项。 根据第二段中“Just then, I found my parents’ old copies of the entire Harry Portter book series. Visually, my parents’ books were my worst nightmare. I remember thinking to myself that there was no way I would be able to read these books.(就在那时,我发现了我父母的旧的哈利波特系列丛书。从视觉上看,父母的书是我最可怕的噩梦。我记得我当时对自己说,我是不可能读懂这些书的)”可推知,作者在看到这套书的破旧样子后感到很沮丧。故选C项。 【26题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第三段中“When it was time for me to read the final copy, I was kind of a changed woman. I still strongly disliked old books, but the plot of the entire Harry Potter series had attracted me so much I had almost entirely forgotten what the books looked like.(当我读最后一本书的时候,我好像变了一个人。 故D项“My Journey with Old Books (我的旧书之旅)”作标题最能概括全文主旨。故选D项。 C In the Gobi Desert of northwest China stand the Mogao Caves (莫高窟), home to one of the world’s greatest collections of Buddhist art. From the fourth century onwards, painters and sculptors worked there for over a thousand years, leaving behind hundreds of caves decorated with murals (壁画) covering more than 45,000 square metres. Early travellers described the walls as “a library of paintings” where every inch of space told a story. Yet the caves have always been fighting a losing battle with nature. Dry sand carried by the wind scratches the painted surface, and changes in temperature and humidity make the pigments (颜料) crack and fade. In recent decades, however, the greatest danger has proved to be the caves’ own fame. Every visitor breathes out carbon dioxide and brings in moisture, which is taking its toll on the fragile murals. Conservationists warned that if nothing were done, the paintings might not survive for the next generation to see. The answer, surprisingly, came from the digital world. In the early 1990s, the Dunhuang Academy began photographing the murals in extremely high resolution, inch by inch, and joining the images together into complete digital copies of each cave. The work is slow and demanding: a single cave can take months to record. But once a wall has been “captured”, its colours and details are preserved forever, no matter what happens to the original. Today, visitors to Dunhuang stop first at a modern tourist centre, where two short films introduce the history and art of the caves before they board a bus to the site. Strict limits allow only 6,000 visitors a day, and each group is shown just a few selected caves. “We are not keeping people away from the art,” says a senior researcher at the Academy. “The films help them understand what they are going to see, so they spend less time and pay more attention inside the caves.” The digital copies have also opened the caves to the world. Anyone with an internet connection can now take an online “cloud tour” of thirty caves, examining details that are too high or too dark to be seen on site, while scholars use the database to compare brushwork across a thousand years. Some visitors complain that a screen can never equal standing in a dark, silent cave. The Academy agrees — and that is exactly the point. Digitalization, they insist, is not a replacement but a promise: the real caves may be closed one day, yet their beauty will remain open to all. 28. What do the underlined words “taking its toll” in paragraph 2 mean? A. Causing serious damage. B. Making little difference. C. Attracting wide attention. D. Setting a new record. 29. Why did the Dunhuang Academy photograph the murals inch by inch? A. To replace the original caves with copies. B. To keep a permanent record of their details. C. To help painters learn traditional skills. D. To attract more tourists to the site. 30. What can visitors do at the new tourist centre? A. Watch films that prepare them for the caves. B. Make copies of their favourite murals. C. Visit as many as thirty caves in a group. D. Stay as long as they like inside the caves. 31. What is the Academy’s attitude towards digitalization? A. It will soon take the place of real visits. B. It protects the caves while keeping them open to all. C. It has made the caves less attractive to tourists. D. It is more useful to scholars than to tourists. A 29. B 30. A 31. 根据画线短语的上文“Every visitor breathes out carbon dioxide and brings in moisture (每个游客都呼出二氧化碳,并带来水汽)”和下文“Conservationists warned that if nothing were done, the paintings might not survive for the next generation to see. (保护主义者警告称,如果不采取任何措施,这些画作可能无法传给下一代欣赏。)”可知,这些画作需要被保护才能成功传承下去,可推知游客带来的二氧化碳和水汽会对画作造成严重损害,画线短语意为“对……造成严重损害”。 【29题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中“But once a wall has been “captured”, its colours and details are preserved forever, no matter what happens to the original. (但一旦墙壁被“捕捉”下来,其颜色和细节将永远保存,无论原物如何变化。)”可知,研究院逐寸拍摄的目的是为壁画细节留下永久记录。 【30题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段中“Today, visitors to Dunhuang stop first at a modern tourist centre, where two short films introduce the history and art of the caves before they board a bus to the site. (如今,游客参观敦煌时,首先会来到一个现代化的游客中心,在那里观看两部短片介绍洞窟的历史与艺术,然后乘坐巴士前往景区。)”可知,游客可以在新旅游中心观看为参观洞穴做准备的影片。 【31题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Digitalization, they insist, is not a replacement but a promise: the real caves may be closed one day, yet their beauty will remain open to all. (他们坚持认为,数字化并非替代,而是一种承诺:真正的洞穴或许有一天会关闭,但其美丽将永远向所有人敞开。)”可推知,研究院认为数字化既保护洞穴又让它们永远向公众开放。 D As the saying goes, practice makes perfect. While it may sound like good advice, it’s not the best or fastest path because practice can only get you so far, says Scott Young, author of Get Better at Anything: 12 Maxims for Mastery. “Practice is not a cure- all.” Young explains. “It doesn’t necessarily improve your skills but rather makes them more automatic and fluent.” In his book, Young clarifies this concept with the game Tetris where players fit falling blocks to complete lines. The more you practice the faster and more accurate you become at placing the blocks. However, simply practicing doesn’t guarantee higher scores. To reach higher proficiency (精通度), one must go beyond repetitive practice and use the correct techniques. Young said, “It’s important to do the correct technique from the beginning. That’s why piano teachers and tennis coaches prefer to train someone who has had no experience rather than someone who has had a lot of experience. By starting with the correct techniques, beginners can grasp skills more quickly. Without established habits to break, they are more likely to build a strong base for long- term improvement.” Malcolm Gladwell popularized the 10,000- hour rule in his book Outliers: The Story of Success, suggesting that proficiency in any field requires about 10,000 hours of practice. Yet Anders Ericsson, whose research was a big inspiration for this concept, disagreed. He argued for the idea of deliberate practice, which was not just practice but practice under the guidance with immediate feedback (反馈) about your performance. He stressed that learning from outcomes through corrective feedback is essential for developing true proficiency, otherwise you just spend time getting fluency and confidence. Getting high- quality feedback will depend on how you ask for it. Simply asking someone “What do you think?” is not enough. “There’s just no way in our social network that someone could give you really honest feedback and not cause harm to the relationship,” Young says. Instead, he suggests asking, “It you were going to make this better, what would you do?” By asking how to improve it, we shift the focus from judgment to practical steps for addressing any concerns. 32. What idea does Scott Young put forward in his book? A. High scores need consistent practice. B. Fluency comes from regular practice. C. Right skills don’t guarantee success. D. Practice may not ensure excellence. 33. Why did Young mention piano teachers and tennis coaches in paragraph 3? A. To introduce a new idea. B. To make a comparison. C. To illustrate a point. D. To confirm a guess 34. What does Anders Ericsson advocate? A. Practicing under effective guidance. B. Increasing the frequency of practice. C. Enhancing the fluency of performance. D. Getting confident from positive feedback. 35. What is a better way to ask for feedback in Young’s opinion? A. Turning to strangers for help. B. Not expecting honest response. C. Asking for ways of improving. D. Preparing for any judgment. D 33. C 34. A 35. 根据第一段“As the saying goes, practice makes perfect. While it may sound like good advice, it’s not the best or fastest path because practice can only get you so far, says Scott Young, author of Get Better at Anything: 12 Maxims for Mastery. (俗话说,熟能生巧。《在任何事情上都做得更好:精通的12条格言》一书的作者斯科特·杨说,虽然这听起来像是好建议,但这并不是最好或最快的方法,因为练习只能让你走到这一步。)”和“Practice is not a cure-all. (练习并非万能药。)”可知Scott Young在其书中提出的想法是练习可能不能保证卓越。故选D项。 【33题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段的“It’s important to do the correct technique from the beginning. That’s why piano teachers and tennis coaches prefer to train someone who has had no experience rather than someone who has had a lot of experience. By starting with the correct techniques, beginners can grasp skills more quickly. Without established habits to break, they are more likely to build a strong base for long-term improvement. 根据第四段的“He argued for the idea of deliberate practice, which was not just practice but practice under the guidance with immediate feedback about your performance. (他主张有意图的练习,这种练习不仅仅是练习,而是在指导下的练习,并且立即得到关于你表现的反馈。)”可知Anders Ericsson提倡的是在有效指导下的练习。故选A项。 根据最后一段的“Instead, he suggests asking, ‘If you were going to make this better, what would you do?’ By asking how to improve it, we shift the focus from judgment to practical steps for addressing any concerns. (相反,他建议问,“如果你要让这变得更好,你会怎么做?”通过询问如何改进,我们将注意力从评判转移到解决任何问题的实际步骤上。)”可知,在Young看来,更好的寻求反馈的方式是询问改进的方法。故选C项。 第二节 (共5小题; 每小题2.5分, 满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 The world has a water problem which is simple to understand but not to solve. The amount of water in the world is limited. Water usage in the world has increased during the past 10 years. Usage will continue to increase as the population grows and uses more water. A third of the world’s population lives in countries that have too little water. ____36____ It’s strange to think that there is more than enough water available for everyone’s basic needs. ____37____ Some countries are much drier than others, for example Sudan in Africa. The UN says that people need a minimum of 50 liters of water a day for drinking, washing, cooking and sanitation(公共卫生). In 1990, over a billion people did not have even that. ____38____ Water shortages can mean long walks to get water, high prices to buy it, food insecurity and diseases from drinking dirty water. Governments that try to improve water supplies need to think carefully about how to do this. Dams and other large projects now affected 60 percent of world’s largest rivers and provide millions with water. ____39____ ____40____ New technology can help, especially by cleaning up the pollution and so making more water usable and in agriculture, where water use can be made far more efficient. For millions of people around the world, solving the problem is a matter of life and death. A. So what can help? B. It’s just not spread evenly throughout the world. C. My Journey with Old Books C In the Gobi Desert of northwest China stand the Mogao Caves (莫高窟), home to one of the world’s greatest collections of Buddhist art. D As the saying goes, practice makes perfect. The world has a water problem which is simple to understand but not to solve. Our preferred park is a 2km walk from my house and it has a 1km walking track. I could not drive him there every day as I had to leave for the office while at the same time he wanted to set out. Since there were hardly any footpaths in Karachi, my father said he was delighted to walk on the road as he was certain there wouldn’t be much traffic in the morning. Though I kept him informed that our house was near the park and was made of red bricks in case he got lost, I was still less confident so I suggested it would be safer if changed his walk time to the evening. That way I could take him to the park after work. However, my father — a determined person — said that he could not change his routine for just a few days and insisted that he would be leaving the house every day at 7 am and returning by 8 am. So one day when he had not returned by 8:30 am, my wife, Qaisa phoned me in a panic Worried, I immediately drove home, taking the same route that my father would have taken for his walk. Not spotting him anywhere, I drove back to the park, in the hone of discovering some trace, but in vain.
