When snow fell over Longnan, a county in Jiangxi Province, in January 2024, Zhong Yanpeng’s phone buzzed with worry. He was in neighboring Guangdong, yet his mind was back home — on the 350-year-old Hakka round house he had tended for over 50 years.
“Rain and snow are the worst enemies of these old walls,” he told his team, and packed his tools quickly.
He drove through the storm across the provincial border to Yangcun Village. The four-story building stood silent beneath the grey sky, its rammed-earth (夯土) walls damp-darkened. Zhong stepped closer, tapped gently with his small hammer, and listened. “Still solid,” he nodded in relief.
To most visitors, these round houses are mere curiosities. For Zhong, they represent memory, duty, and identity. Raised in one, he took up carpentry at 16 and stuck to the craft. Their strength comes not only from clay and lime, but also from brown sugar, egg whites, and sticky rice — ingredients aged for months for use in defensive walls. “Ancient wisdom,” he said with a smile.
Yet such wisdom is fragile. Skilled craftsmen were scarce in the 1980s, and the shortage persists today. His nephew Li Minghua, also a master, sighs about youth: “They favor city apartments. My team’s youngest member is over 40.”
Zhong travels nationwide to learn from masters, consulting historians and former residents, and recording every detail. “Each house bears a unique story. Restoration must stay true to original materials, measurements, and methods,” he says.
By 2023, Longnan had restored nearly 100 round houses, but Zhong sees no victory here. “My biggest concern is skill inheritance. As the senior craftsman, I must set an example.” His team now totals more than 50 members. Still, the real question lingers: will young people choose working with traditional rammed-earth construction over urban comfort? The answer remains uncertain.
4. Why does Zhong tap the old wall with his hammer?
A. To record building data. B. To repair broken walls.
C. To take measurements. D. To check its condition.
5. What makes Hakka round house walls tough?
A. Local modern building clay. B. Specially mixed and aged materials.
C. Common kitchen ingredients. D. Modern protective chemicals.
6. What is Zhong’s attitude toward restoration work?
A. Casual and careless. B. Proud and worried.
C. Cautious and faithful. D. Doubtful and negative.
7. What is victory in Zhong’s eyes?
A. Building a larger team. B. Passing down the skills.
C. Restoring more round houses. D. Attracting young tourists.

There’s a continuing debate over whether electric vehicles should produce sounds to let the blind and other pedestrians (行人) know they’re on the road. Some think those sounds should be standardized — like the “beep” sound of heavy machinery backing up, indicating “something heavy is coming this way” when hearing it — while others think any sound will do.
This is a serious subject. Plug-in hybrid cars (电混动力汽车) and battery electric vehicles are super-quiet, and a study at the University of California, Riverside, pointed out that people listening to recordings on headphones can hear a regular gas car coming from 28 feet away but a hybrid in battery mode only when it’s 7 feet away.
In response, the European Union has carried out new rules: all new electric vehicle models must have a sound-producing device, which sounds like a traditional car engine. Starting in 2021, all new electric vehicles of any model will need the Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System or AVAS. That sound will come into play when the car is traveling backwards or when it’s traveling at less than 12 miles an hour — speeds at which cars are more likely to be mixing with pedestrians.
That’s a nice start, say representatives for the blind, but more is needed. “We’re calling on the government to take this announcement further by requiring AVAS on all existing electric and hybrid vehicles and ensuring drivers have them switched on,” John Welshman, guide dog owner and a staff member of Guide Dogs, said in a statement.
Drivers in most cases have the ability to shut off the device when needed. My guess is that they will eventually be standardized so your mind will automatically register “electric car” when you hear it. And that’s probably a good thing to reduce the chaos on the roads.
8. How does the author show electric cars’ quietness?
A. By giving reasons. B. By offering examples.
C. By presenting data. D. By making comparisons.
9. What can we learn about the AVAS?
A. It works only when cars travel fast.
B. It makes cars sound like trucks on the road,
C. It’s mainly used when vehicles travel forward and fast.
D. It’s been required for all new electric vehicles within EU since 2021.
10. What is John Welshman’s attitude towards the new rules?
A. Doubtful and negative. B. Supportive but critical.
C. Indifferent and unconcerned. D. Disappointed but expectant.
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. The development of AVAS.
B. The quietness of electric cars.
C. The debate on electric cars’ sounds.
D. The problems with the electric cars.

Flavor isn’t just on your tongue — it’s also in your brain. New brain scans have identified a specific region that combines taste and smell into the unified experience we call flavor.
Smell and taste are closely connected, says Putu Agus Khorisantono, a neuroscientist at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden. When we eat, food chemicals bind to taste sensors on the tongue, while food smells travel through the mouth and stick to smell sensors in the nose. These two signals combine in the brain to create our sense of flavor. For instance, mangoes and peaches both taste mostly sour, but their different aromas allow us to tell them apart easily.
To find exactly where this combination happens in the brain, Khorisantono’s team first trained 25 people to connect specific smell-taste mixtures with particular flavors. Then they gave the participants tiny drinks designed to activate either taste sensors or smell sensors, while scanning their brain activity throughout the process.
Using machine learning, the team analyzed the brain scans. They labeled each scan with what the participant had sipped, then trained algorithms to predict what people had tasted based on brain images alone. The best-performing algorithm had been trained on images from a region called the insula (脑岛).
Scientists once believed the insula responded only to tastes. But research with rodents in 2017 showed it could also process smells. And last year, scientists discovered that some insula cells respond to combinations of smell and taste, hinting that this region may play a role in identifying flavor.
The new study confirms this: the insula is key to both smell and flavor. When participants received either a food smell or a taste, scans of the insula looked strikingly similar, suggesting it interprets smell and taste signals in much the same way.
Algorithms trained on other brain regions also performed well, possibly because they receive flavor signals from the insula, Khorisantono explains. These findings offer new insight into how our brains create the rich experience of flavor from separate inputs.
12. What were the participants asked to do in the experiment?
A. Taste mangoes and peaches. B. Describe the feelings brought by drinks.
C. Distinguish sour foods by smell. D. Associate smell-taste mixtures with flavors.
13. Why was machine learning used in the study?
A. To optimize brain scan images.
B. To identify the brain region for flavor.
C. To confirm what people had tasted.
D. To mark brain scans with sipped drinks.
14. What did scientists once think about the insula?
A. It was only responsive to tastes.
B. It was only sensitive to smells.
C. It could combine smell and taste.
D. It played no role in identifying flavor.
15. What is the main finding of the new study?
A. Flavor experience largely depends on the tongue.
B. Flavor processing takes place within a single brain area.
C. Flavor arises from how the brain combines smell and taste.
D. Smell and taste keep separate from each other in the brain.

My grandfather, a doctor for over forty years, always told me that health is the real wealth. I never understood what he meant until last year, when I found myself in a situation that forced me to rethink my lifestyle.
At eighteen, I thought I was unbeatable. I was in my final year of high school, and my life was all about studying. I woke up at 5 am, drank coffee, and studied until midnight. I skipped breakfast, ate instant noodles for lunch, and had energy drinks during late-night study. I turned down my friends’ invitations to play basketball. “I don’t have time,” I said. “Study is more important.” My parents were worried. My father left a note on my desk, which read, “Your body needs rest.” I put it aside.
However, one morning in November, I woke up feeling strange. My heart was racing, my hands were shaking, and I could barely stand. When I tried to get up, my legs gave way and I fell to the floor. Everything went black.
When I opened my eyes, I was in a hospital bed. A doctor was checking my blood pressure, his face serious. “You’ve overworked your body,” he said. “Your heart is under extreme stress. If you continue, you could cause permanent damage.” I stared at the ceiling, unable to speak.
That evening, my grandfather came to visit. He sat by my bed. He didn’t scold me. Instead, he told me a story about a young doctor who worked day and night, ignored his health, and collapsed from exhaustion at thirty-five. “He survived,” my grandfather said, “but he never fully recovered. And he always regretted it.”
That night, I couldn’t sleep. I thought about all the meals I had skipped, all the sleep I had given up, and all the moments with friends and family I had missed. I had been so focused on my goal that I had forgotten something essential: without my health, nothing else would matter. I made a decision right then and there.

【答案】4. D 5. B 6. C 7. B

【4题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Zhong stepped closer, tapped gently with his small hammer, and listened. “Still solid,” he nodded in relief. (钟走近,用小锤子轻轻敲击,并倾听。“依然坚固。”他如释重负地点点头。)”可知,钟彦鹏敲击墙壁是为了通过声音判断墙体结构是否依然坚固,目的是检查墙体的健康状况。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Their strength comes not only from clay and lime, but also from brown sugar, egg whites, and sticky rice — ingredients aged for months for use in defensive walls. (它们的强度不仅来自黏土和石灰,还来自红糖、蛋清和糯米——这些成分经过数月的陈化,用于防御墙。)”可知,客家围屋的墙壁使用了多种原料混合、并且经过数月陈化处理的特殊材料,这是墙壁坚固耐用的核心原因。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第六段“Zhong travels nationwide to learn from masters, consulting historians and former residents, and recording every detail. “Each house bears a unique story. Restoration must stay true to original materials, measurements, and methods,” he says. (钟走遍全国向各位匠人学习,咨询历史学家和原住居民,并且记录每一处细节。“每一座围屋都承载着独特的故事,修复必须忠实于原始材料、尺寸和工艺方法。”他说。)”可知,钟彦鹏在修复工作中不放过任何细节,严格恪守“忠于原貌”的修复原则,体现出他对修复工作谨慎小心、忠于传统的态度。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“By 2023, Longnan had restored nearly 100 round houses, but Zhong sees no victory here. (到2023年,龙南已经修复了近100座围屋,但钟并不认为这是胜利。)”和“My biggest concern is skill inheritance. (我最大的担忧是技艺的传承。)”可知,在钟彦鹏看来,修复一百座围屋也算不上真正的成功,只有解决他最大的担忧,实现传统夯土建造技艺的传承,才是真正的胜利。

【答案】8. D 9. D 10. B 11. C

【答案】12. D 13. B 14. A 15. C

Everyday lessons that shape you
School is a place where you learn about the world and beyond. It happens inside four walls, with the teacher standing before you and explaining rules. When the bell rings, learning stops! ____16____ However, as I grew older, I found learning actually happens everywhere.
Once, when I was in grade nine, there was a school event. We were made into different groups for a presentation. I spared no effort to prepare for it, working on slides, checking spellings, and arranging pictures.____17____ Usually, in school, the time and effort given to your studies are shown in your score. But this time it was not about tests or exams.
On the day of the event, only one or two people spoke, and the presentation ended. Later, when the students talked about the activity, they spoke highly of those who presented it, but I wasn’t the one presenting. No one said I did badly. And no one said I did well either. ____18____ But this experience taught me how to stay responsible even when no one notices me and what kind of person I am when there is nothing to gain (得到).
____19____ You know when the exam is, or when the result will come. Outside, you wait for answers and for things to make sense. No one tells you how long it will take. Sometimes it even takes years to learn and earn something. In a world filled with uncertainties, the journey itself is also important. ____20____
So, the truth is, you are learning every day. And unlike the classroom, there’s no final bell to tell you when you’ve learned enough.
A. But every gain comes with pain.
B. I thought I would be recognized.
C. In school, everything has marked dates.
D. This is how it feels when you are a kid.

【答案】 Opinions on WeChat Study Groups
Different students hold different views on WeChat study groups. Some believe they are convenient, allowing us to share resources and discuss problems anytime. Others argue that they easily distract us with endless messages and reduce face-to-face communication.
From my perspective, WeChat study groups are beneficial if used properly. They help us clarify doubts quickly and learn from peers. However, we should set specific study hours to avoid distractions.
In conclusion, it is self-discipline that determines whether these groups truly help us. Only when we use them wisely can we maximize their value.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The next morning, I told my parents about my decision.

The following months, I slowly began to rebuild my life and health.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】例文
The next morning, I told my parents about my decision. “I’m going to change,” I said, my voice trembling but firm. My mother’s eyes filled with tears of relief, and my father gave me a rare, warm smile. “We’ll help you,” he said softly. Together, we drew up a new daily schedule, which included three proper meals, eight hours of sleep, and a thirty-minute walk every evening. For the first time in months, I actually looked forward to the day ahead instead of dreading the exhaustion that awaited me.
The following months, I slowly began to rebuild my life and health. I started each morning with a nutritious breakfast instead of coffee. I joined my friends for basketball on weekends, laughing and sweating under the sun. To my surprise, my grades didn’t drop. In fact, they improved because I studied with a clear mind and a rested body. I learned that health is not something to give up for success — it is what makes success possible. My grandfather’s words, “Health is the real wealth,” finally made sense to me.
