Fauja Singh, 109, who broke marathon records and was called “Superman” before hanging up his running shoes six years ago, will be the subject of a Bollywood film, Fauja, tracing his remarkable career.
Mr. Singh, born in India in 1911, was a keen amateur runner in his youth, but gave it up. After a series of personal tragedies including the deaths of his wife and two of his children, he returned to his former passion in his eighties.
He moved to the UK soon after and now lives in Ilford, cast London, He arrived for his first training session in Redbridge in a three-piece suit, and his first race was the London marathon in 2000. Three years later in Toronto, he broke the world record for the 90-plus. In 2011, when he turned 100, Mr. Singh set eight world records in a day. He ran the 100m in 23.14, then added the 200m, 400m, 800m, 1,500m, the mile, the 3000m and 5,000m world records. Three of the events had never been attempted by anyone over the age of 100 before. Days later, he became the first centenarian(百岁老人) to complete a marathon, once again in Toronto, with a time of 8:25:27.
Mr. Singh retired from competitive running in 2013 but continued jogging for pleasure. He owed his extraordinary longevity (长寿) to a vegetarian diet and avoiding smoking, alcohol and fried food.
Of marathon running he has said, “The first 20 miles are not difficult. As for the last six miles, I keep talking to myself, ‘Keep it up, old boy!’”.

Artificial intelligence is changing how we predict the weather. Every year since 2018, Nature magazine has drawn up a list of emerging technologies to watch in the coming year. For 2026, one of the seven technologies on the list is AI-powered meteorology — and for good reason.
Traditional weather forecasting relies on physics-based models. Supercomputers solve complex equations to simulate how temperature, pressure, and wind evolve over time. These models are computationally expensive and often take hours to produce a single forecast. But AI is offering a faster, smarter alternative.
AI weather models are trained on decades of historical weather data. Instead of solving physical equations, they learn to recognize patterns and make predictions based on what they have seen before. The result is dramatic: forecasts that once took hours can now be generated in seconds. And they are not just faster — in many cases, they are also more accurate.
Consider Hurricane Melissa, which caused severe damage in the Caribbean last October. While traditional models were still processing data, an AI model developed by researchers at Google DeepMind in London anticipated that the storm would become a category-5 event days in advance. It also accurately predicted the hurricane’s path, giving local authorities more time to prepare.
But AI forecasting is not without its limitations. These models struggle with rare or unprecedented weather events that fall outside their training data. A storm behaving in an entirely new way might confuse an AI system that has never seen anything like it. For this reason, most experts believe the future lies in combining both approaches — using AI for speed and traditional models for reliability in extreme cases.
One thing is already clear: AI has forever changed how we predict the weather, from local storms to global climate patterns.
8. What is an advantage of AI weather models over traditional ones?
A. They require less training data.
B. They generate forecasts in less time.
C. They solve more complex equations.
D. They can predict any type of weather.
9. What does the author mainly intend to show in paragraph 4?
A. Traditional models are useful.
B. How Hurricane Melissa was formed.
C. AI weather models show high accuracy.
D. Traditional and AI models have respective strengths.
10. What is a limitation of AI weather forecasting?
A. It is too slow for everyday use.
B. It needs supercomputers to run.
C. It cannot learn from historical data.
D. It struggles with rare weather events.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Hurricane Melissa: A Victory for AI
B. AI Is Changing Weather Forecasting
C. AI vs Traditional Models: Which One Wins?
D. The End of Physics-Based Weather Prediction
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Is AI Helping or Hurting High School Students?
Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming more common in education. Many high school students now use AI tools like ChatGPT to help with homework, write essays, or even study for exams. ____12____ But are they really helping students learn better?
A recent study from MIT found that students who used AI to write essays showed lower brain activity than those who wrote without help. ____13____ Researchers believe that when students rely too much on AI, they stop using their own minds to solve problems.
____14____ Some students feel anxious when they cannot tell if the AI’s answer is correct. Others worry that they are not really learning, just copying. This can lead to less motivation and more stress.
However, AI is not entirely negative. ____15____ This helps students understand their mistakes and improve faster. AI can also help with language learning, math practice, and science projects if used in the right way.
Experts say the key is balance. The users can let AI lend a hand, but never let it replace the mind. For example, AI can give ideas or explain difficult words, but students should still try to solve problems on their own first. Teachers also need to teach students how to use AI responsibly, so they don’t lose important skills like critical thinking and creativity. ____16____
In the age of AI, learning is changing. But one thing stays the same: real learning happens when students think for themselves.
A. These tools are fast, smart, and easy to use.
B. In short, AI is just a helper, not a replacement.
C. AI will completely replace teachers in the near future.
D. Another problem is that AI can make students feel less confident.
E. In some schools, teachers use AI to give students personalized feedback.
F. The Internet makes it possible for students to study anywhere at any time.
G. Over time, these students also had poorer memory and weaker thinking skills.

After college graduation, I became an editor of our city evening paper and was promoted to the deputy (副的) editor of the paper five years later.
One day, as I parked my car and walked towards the office, I noticed two boys who appeared to be around eight years old, selling popcorn on the street corner. Curious, I approached them and requested half a kilogram of popcorn. They prepared it for me within five minutes.
“How much is it?” I asked.
“It’s 30 rupees, sir,” they replied.
I then asked their names, and they answered, “Sahib, Asib.”
I asked Sahib why they weren’t in school and were selling popcorn instead. Sahib explained that they were doing it to earn money for their schooling. However, Asib quickly interjected (插话), saying they had no money left after covering food and medicine, not to mention schooling fees.
“Medicine for what? You guys are looking well,” I said.
Asib replied, “Our mother has a kidney (肾) disease, so we need money to purchase medicine for her treatment.”
When I inquired about their father, Sahib sadly shared that he had passed away from cancer four years before, leaving their mother to support them with two jobs. I was deeply moved and struggled to find words. Before leaving, I asked whether they would be there the next day, intending to buy some then. They assured me they would come.
“Take care, boys,” I said as I left.
The next day, I returned to the spot where I had met Sahib and Asib the day before, but they were not selling popcorn as usual, standing there with a single bag of popcorn. I asked why and they explained that they had been waiting for me but had to leave because their mother’s health had got worse.

【答案】8. B 9. C 10. D 11. B

【答案】12. A 13. G 14. D 15. E 16. B

【答案】
Nowadays, many primary and middle schools in Shandong carry out daily PE Fitness Standard Tests, which causes mixed opinions among parents. As for me, I firmly support this activity.
Firstly, daily fitness tests can push students to exercise regularly, building up their bodies and improving physical health. Besides, proper exercise can relieve students’ study pressure and help them stay energetic in class.
To make it better, schools should arrange tests reasonably to avoid extra burden. Only by balancing study and exercise can students grow healthily.

I could see in their eyes that their hearts broke because of sadness, so I decided to do something to help the two honest and Dutiful kids.

Paragraph 2:
At my office, I penned down this touching story and made the decision to share it with the public.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1:
I knew that they were too young to bear the heavy burden alone. With these words, I took out 2,000 rupees and handed the money to them. They were too shocked to say a word. I told them I would try my best to help them go back to school and help their mother cure her disease. Hearing these words, the boys were so touched that tears poured out of their eyes. They cried, “Thank you very much...” Having a sudden idea, I left them immediately and returned to my office.
Paragraph 2:
At my office, I penned down this touching story and made the decision to share it with the public. I appealed to fellow citizens to extend their support, emphasizing that with everyone’s contribution of a little love, the kids would not fear to lose their mother or face homelessness. They shouldn’t have to resort to selling popcorn or dropping out of school. The response to my appeal was overwhelming. With the collective efforts of the community, the mother’s condition was stabilized, and the children went back to school. It was the joint love that turned a story of hardship into a story of hope.
