Long before smartphones and social media connected people across the world, many overseas Chinese families depended on qiaopi to keep in touch.
During the last century, many people from Fujian Province left home for Southeast Asia to make more money. But leaving meant being separated from their families. At that time, qiaopi became an important link between those overseas workers and their families at home. A qiaopi was more than a letter. It usually carried money sent home by overseas family members. Through qiaopi, parents learnt how their children were doing overseas, and husbands stayed connected with their loved ones.
For nearly sixty years, Jiang Mingdian has helped pass on those messages. Today, at the age of 77, he is one of the last qiaopi writers still working in Shishi, Fujian.
When Jiang was young, villages depended on letter writers like him. People who could not read or write would tell him their stories, and he would carefully put their feelings into words. Some letters brought joyful news, while others carried worries or messages about family events. When replies arrived, Jiang often read them aloud to anxious (焦急的) families.
Over the years, Jiang witnessed (见证) many reunions, separations, hopes and tears through qiaopi. In his eyes, these letters were not simply pieces of paper. They were bridges across the ocean.
Today, most communication happens online. Now Jiang writes only a few family letters each year. Yet he still opens his stall (摊位) every day. He also works as a guide at a local Qiaopi Museum, telling visitors about the history of these special letters.
Although qiaopi is becoming a memory of the past, the love and family connections it carried still live on.
51.Why did people use qiaopi?
A.To record history. B.To send money only.

52.Which paragraph best shows how Jiang helped people in the past?

C.He is waiting for a letter from his family. D.He wants to keep the memory of qiaopi alive.
54.What does the writer believe about qiaopi today?
A.Its spirit still matters. B.Its future is not clear.

Desertification (沙漠化) is a big problem in some parts of China, but people have found many ways to fight it. Here are some methods Chinese people use to control deserts and turn them into green land.
First, planting trees and grass is the most common way. Their roots help hold the soil together and stop the sand from moving. For example, the “Great Green Wall” project in northern China has planted millions of trees to stop the spread of deserts. Grass is also planted to cover the sand and prevent the wind.
Second, using straw checkerboards (草方格) is a smart idea. People lay straw in square patterns (图案) on the sand. These squares break the wind and keep the sand from spreading. Over time, plants can grow inside these squares, making the land greener.
Third, building sand barriers (障碍) helps prevent the wind. These barriers reduce wind speed and protect nearby farmland and villages from sandstorms.
Another method is water-saving technology. In dry areas, people use drip irrigation (滴灌) to water plants. Drip irrigation, for example, sends water directly to plant roots, reducing waste. This helps plants grow even in very dry conditions.
Finally, education plays an important role. The government has made rules to protect the environment, and schools teach students why it’s important to stop desertification.
Thanks to these efforts, many deserts in China have become greener.
56.What is the main idea of the second paragraph?
A.Planting trees and grass helps prevent sand from moving.
B.Planting grass is more important than planting trees.

B.They provide food for animals in the desert.
C.They stop the wind and keep sand from moving.
D.They make the desert look very beautiful.
58.What does the underlined word “This” refer to?
A.Sending water directly to plant roots. B.Reducing waste.
C.The sand barrier. D.The straw checkerboard.
59.What can we infer from the text?
A.Using straw checkerboards is the best way to stop sand.
B.Education can solve desertification completely.
C.Drip irrigation wastes plenty of water.
D.Without human efforts, deserts will keep spreading.
60.Which would be the best title for this text?
A.The Problems of Deserts in China B.How China Fights Desertification
C.The Best Way to Plant Trees in Deserts D.Sandstorms in Northern China

Have you ever wondered how many calories (卡路里) are in your lunch? A new app called Cal AI can help. All you have to do is take a photo of your food, and the app will tell you how many calories it has. It can also show you what nutrients (营养物) are in your dish.
Cal AI was created by Zach Yadegari, an 18-year-old student. In 2023, Zach tried using another calorie-counting app called MyFitnessPal to record his meals. But typing in everything he ate took too much time. “It was very boring and hard to use,” Zach said. After just three days, he gave up.
Zach wanted something faster and smarter. So, he teamed up with his high school friends to make a better app. Together, they trained Cal AI using pictures from three different AI models. The app can know both simple and complex (复杂的) foods, like sandwiches and packaged snacks. It has also learned to guess how much food is on the plate by matching photos to the standard servings.
Today, Cal AI is 90% correct, and it keeps improving with help from users. Since it came out in May 2024, it has been downloaded over five million times. In February 2025 alone, the app earned over $2 million!
One big reason for its success is social media. Zach gets in touch with fitness influencers and asks them to talk about Cal AI. Their followers see the posts, try the app and share it with others. As a result, it has become very popular among young users aged 15-25.
Zach finished high school this summer with top grades. Even though he has been accepted by several universities, he plans to take a gap year. He wants to make Cal AI even more correct and help people of all ages eat more healthily. This young coder (程序员) isn’t slowing down — he’s just getting started.
61.Why did Zach give up using MyFitnessPal?
A.Because it was boring and hard to use. B.Because it was too expensive.
C.Because it had too few food pictures. D.Because it couldn’t record calories.
62.What can we know from Paragraph 3 and Paragraph 4?
A.Cal AI can know all kinds of food without mistakes.
B.Cal AI became correct with training and users’ help.
C.Cal AI’s success made Zach drop out of high school.
D.Cal AI was created to help Zach’s friends record calories.
63.What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 5 refer to?
A.Users of Cal AI. B.Followers of fitness influencers.
C.Fitness influencers. D.Universities that accepted Zach.
64.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Zach wasn’t accepted by any university, so he planned a gap year.
B.Zach will stop working on Cal AI once he starts his university life.
C.Zach needs to work to earn money for university during the gap year.
D.Zach wants to spend time making Cal AI better before going to university.
65.What’s the main idea of the text?
A.A teen coder creates a smart app to count calories.
B.A calorie app (MyFitnessPal) has some disadvantages.
C.People use a calorie-counting app to eat more healthily.
D.Social media helps an app (Cal AI) become successful.

Water is polluted. We can’t see fish swimming in the river. Some people even have no clean water to drink. People have cut down too many trees. With the increase of cars and the development of industry, the air has become dirtier and dirtier.
So I think we must do something to protect the environment. First, we can go to school on foot or by bike instead of driving. Then, we can use shopping baskets not plastic bags when we go shopping. Finally, we can use both sides of the paper and learn to recycle books.
In a word, if everyone pays more attention to our environment, there will be less pollution and our life will be better. Thank you for listening!
