Paragraph 1: Suddenly, Tom heard a faint whistle in the distance.
Suddenly, Tom heard a faint whistle in the distance. He held his breath and listened carefully, squeezing Lily’s cold hand tightly. Realizing someone might be looking for them, he shouted at the top of his voice. Lily stopped crying and joined him. Minutes later, a forest ranger appeared from behind the trees. Seeing them shivering, the ranger took out warm candies and wrapped his coat around Lily.
Paragraph 2: When they finally got back home, their parents rushed over.
When they finally got back home, their parents rushed over. They hugged the two kids tightly, tears rolling down their cheeks. Tom apologized for not taking good care of his sister. The ranger told them never to go deep into the woods alone. This unforgettable experience made Tom understand that safety always came first and he should be more responsible.
亮点解析:非谓语动词开头(Squeezing / Realizing / Seeing)、感官与动作描写丰富;开头“whistle”与段首句形成伏笔呼应;结尾升华克制自然。全篇约148词。
【写作原文】
A Stormy Day on the Mountain
Tom had always loved hiking with his father, Mr. Brown. Every autumn, they would pick a new mountain and spend a whole Saturday climbing it, talking and laughing along the way. This weekend, they set out for Mount Silver, a mountain they had visited twice before.
The morning could not have been better. The sun shone brightly, and a gentle breeze carried the fresh smell of pine trees. “What a great day for hiking!” Tom said cheerfully, stepping ahead of his father. Mr. Brown smiled and followed, carrying a backpack full of water, sandwiches and a first-aid kit.
By noon, they had reached the middle of the mountain. Suddenly, dark clouds rolled in from the west, swallowing the sun. The wind grew stronger, and within minutes, heavy rain began to pour down. “Dad, should we turn back?” Tom asked anxiously. Mr. Brown looked up at the sky and frowned. “The storm seems to be getting worse,” he said, “but we’re already halfway. If we keep going, we can reach the top and take the cable car down. That may be safer than walking back in this rain.”
They continued climbing, but the wet path became increasingly slippery. Half an hour later, as Tom was about to help his father over a large rock, Mr. Brown’s foot slipped. He fell heavily onto the stones, his face turning pale with pain. “Dad! Are you all right?” Tom cried, rushing back to his side. “My ankle…” Mr. Brown gasped, struggling to stand up but failing.
Tom’s heart raced. The rain was falling harder, the wind was howling, and the mountain was gradually being covered by thick fog. Worse still, his father’s phone was dead, and the path ahead had disappeared in the mist. “What should I do?” Tom whispered to himself, trembling with fear. Just then, Mr. Brown looked up at him and said in a weak but steady voice, “Son, I can’t walk anymore. You have to lead us down the mountain. I trust you.”

(以下正文紧接所给段首句续写,为考生实际书写部分,合计约170词)
Paragraph 1:
For a moment, his mind went blank and his hands trembled. But the word “trust” forced him to calm down. He took a deep breath, pulled out the first-aid kit and carefully bandaged his father’s injured ankle. “Don’t worry, Dad. I’ll get us home safely,” he said, trying hard to sound steady. Then, remembering that moss grows thick on the north side of trees, he helped his father up and led him down the slope step by step.
Paragraph 2:
Tom’s eyes lit up. “Dad, we made it!” he shouted with joy. When they finally reached the car, Mr. Brown patted his shoulder and said proudly, “You’ve done a wonderful job, son. I’m so proud of you.” Tom smiled, a warm feeling of achievement rising in his chest. Looking back at the mountain, he realized he had not only led his father down but also become a more dependable person. It was the hardest day of his life, but also the one that made him grow.
2. 语言表达:多次使用非谓语作状语(forcing him to calm down, trying hard to sound steady, Looking back at…)、独立结构(a warm feeling of achievement rising in his chest)、高级词汇(bandage, dependable, achievement),表达生动而不堆砌。
3. 衔接连贯:For a moment→But→Then→step by step→When→Looking back,时间与逻辑链条清晰,两段与段首句无缝衔接。
4. 主题升华:结尾点明“成长的代价与意义”,符合高考读后续写“情节合理、情感积极、主题升华”的阅卷期待。
训练一 The Lost Little Brother
【试题】
Mary was twelve years old and her little brother Tony was only five. That Saturday morning, their mother was busy preparing for a family party, so she asked Mary to take Tony to the nearby park and keep an eye on him. “Stay close to me, and don’t go anywhere alone,” Mary said seriously, holding Tony’s hand as they walked into the park.
The park was crowded with people. Children were flying kites, and old people were doing morning exercises. Attracted by a group of kids playing with a balloon, Tony let go of Mary’s hand and ran toward them. Mary was busy buying an ice cream for him, and when she turned around, Tony was gone.
Panic swept over Mary. She searched the playground, the fountain and the small hill, but her little brother was nowhere to be seen. Tears filled her eyes. “Tony! Tony!” she shouted again and again, her voice trembling. The sun was climbing higher, and the crowd seemed to grow larger with every minute. What if Tony was lost forever? What if a stranger had taken him away? The terrible thoughts made Mary’s heart beat faster and faster.
She ran to the park’s broadcast room. With a shaking voice, she described Tony to the worker on duty: a five-year-old boy in a blue T-shirt and white shorts. “Please broadcast it for me,” she begged. The worker nodded, and soon a clear voice came out of the speakers: “Would Tony please come to the broadcast room? Your sister is waiting for you here.”
Mary stood at the door, her eyes fixed on the path outside. Seconds passed like hours. Just then, she saw a little figure running toward her, followed by an old woman in a gray coat.
Paragraph 1:
Tears of joy rolled down Mary’s cheeks as Tony threw himself into her arms.
Paragraph 2:
“Thank you so much,” Mary said to the old woman, bowing deeply.

Paragraph 1:
She knelt down and hugged him tightly, her whole body trembling with both fear and relief. “I’m so sorry, Tony. I should have held your hand,” she whispered. “It’s OK, Mary,” Tony said, wiping her tears with his small hand. “The kind grandma saw me crying and led me back here.” Mary looked up and saw the old woman standing at a distance, watching them with a gentle smile, as if she were waiting to make sure the two were truly reunited.
Paragraph 2:
The old woman waved her hand and smiled. “It’s my pleasure. You two be careful from now on,” she said, then turned and disappeared into the crowd. On the way home, Tony held Mary’s hand tightly, and Mary kept thinking about the old woman’s kindness. 训练二 The Unfinished Race
【试题】
David was a talented runner on the school track team. For three years, he had trained hard every day, dreaming of winning the city championship. This year, his dream finally seemed within reach: he had won every race this season, and the final was only two weeks away.
But one morning, during a training session, David felt a sharp pain in his right leg. The doctor’s words were like a thunderbolt: he had pulled a muscle, and he must stop running for at least two weeks. “If you run in the final, you may hurt yourself badly,” the doctor warned seriously. “But it’s the most important race of my life!” David shouted, almost in tears.
The next two weeks were the darkest days of David’s life. His teammates went out to practice while he sat alone in the classroom, staring out of the window. The final arrived at last. David’s coach, Mr. Green, walked over to him before the race. “David, I know how much this race means to you,” he said softly. “But winning is not everything. If you really love running, you will come back next year. Right now, just do your best and stay safe.”
Standing at the starting line, David felt his heart pounding in his chest. He looked around the stadium. His teammates were cheering for him; his parents were waving to him in the stands. The gun went off, and all the runners dashed forward like arrows.
Paragraph 1:
David ran with all his strength, but after two laps, the pain in his leg came back sharply.
Paragraph 2:
As David crossed the finish line in last place, the whole stadium burst into thunderous applause.

He told himself that finishing this race was already a victory over his fear.

训练三 Grandpa’s Old Photo
【试题】
Lucy’s grandpa had always been a cheerful old man who told wonderful stories. But lately, something had changed. He often forgot where he put his glasses, and sometimes he called Lucy by her mother’s name. The doctor said he had a memory problem, and there was no cure. “Just be patient and stay with him,” the doctor told the family gently.
One afternoon, Lucy found Grandpa sitting quietly in the garden, holding an old yellowed photo in his trembling hands. In the photo, a young woman in a white dress was standing in front of a small house with a big cherry tree. “Who is she, Grandpa?” Lucy asked softly. Grandpa stared at the photo for a long time, his eyes filled with confusion and sorrow. “I… I can’t remember,” he whispered. “But somehow, I feel she is very important to me.”
Lucy’s heart ached. She showed the photo to her mother, who told her that it was Grandma, and that the house was the one where her grandpa and grandma had spent their youth. Years ago, they had moved to the city to raise their children, and Grandma had passed away only two years after the photo was taken. The small house in the countryside was now empty and almost forgotten.
That night, Lucy looked at the photo again and again. A plan slowly took shape in her mind. She packed a bag with Grandpa’s favorite snacks and marked the route to the countryside on her phone.
Paragraph 1:
The next morning, Lucy took Grandpa to the old house in the countryside.
Paragraph 2:
With tears in his eyes, Grandpa finally said, “I remember everything now, Lucy.”

Paragraph 1:
The moment they stepped into the yard, Grandpa stopped, staring at the big cherry tree. “This tree…” he murmured, touching its rough bark. Lucy unlocked the dusty door and helped him inside. On the wall hung a photo of Grandma in a white dress, exactly the same as the one in Grandpa’s hand. Grandpa reached out, his fingers trembling, and gently touched the glass. “She… she was my wife, wasn’t she?” he asked, his voice breaking.
Paragraph 2:
He turned to Lucy and held her hand tightly. “Her name was Rose. We planted that cherry tree on our wedding day.” Then he told Lucy how he had met Rose, how they had worked hard to build a happy life, and how he had been too busy to take her back to the countryside in her last years. Lucy hugged him and whispered, “Grandma will be happy to know you still remember.” That day, Lucy learned that love never truly fades, even when memories do.
【亮点解析】

3. 情感:从“触动”到“确认”再到“倾诉”,祖孙情感层层加深;结尾点题句“love never truly fades, even when memories do”既呼应原文又升华主题。
4. 人文关怀:选材契合“亲情与记忆”这一高考热点话题,人物形象立体,易引发阅卷者共鸣。
训练
1.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Every morning, Anna walked into the meat factory with a smile. She worked on the production line, packing meat. Though the job was boring and the air was cold, she never lost her warm heart. She was friendly to everyone around her. Because of this, her workmates all loved her. They said Anna was the warmest person in the factory.
Anna always greeted the security guard, Mr. Lee, at the gate. “Good morning, Mr. Lee!” she often said in a cheerful voice. And every afternoon, when she left, she would wave and say, “Goodbye, Mr. Lee! See you tomorrow!” Mr. Lee always nodded and smiled back. To him, Anna was like the morning sun in his lonely life. He had worked there for over ten years, and most workers passed him without a word. But Anna was different. She remembered his name. She asked about his wife’s cough. She once brought him a cup of hot tea on a freezing morning. Those small things stayed in his heart.
One Tuesday afternoon, Anna was asked to check some boxes in the cold storage room alone. It was a huge room, with the temperature maintained at minus eighteen degrees. She put on her thick coat and went inside. The door closed behind her with a heavy click. She checked the boxes carefully, writing down numbers on her small notebook. But when she finished and tried to open the door, it would not move. She pushed and pushed, but the door was locked. She shouted for help, but nobody heard. Everyone had gone home. The factory was silent. The cold began to bite her fingers and face. She felt sleepy and scared.
Meanwhile, Mr. Lee was at the gate, waiting for Anna’s “Goodbye”. Time passed second by second and Mr. Lee felt something was wrong. Anna never left without saying goodbye. He walked to the production line. It was empty. He called her name, but only silence answered. He checked the washroom, the dining hall, and the changing room. Nobody was there. His heart beat fast.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

“GAME OVER”…the big words bouncing up and down within the pop-up window, Ethan sighed in despair. He felt all his energy drained away (消耗殆尽). He had been glued to his desk, playing games non-stop for three hours this weekend.
His eyes were burning and dry, his shoulders stiff and sore from sitting motionlessly for so long. Staring blankly at the flickering screen, he slowly leaned back in his chair, his mind totally blank, fingers still trembling slightly from the intense gaming session.
A wave of helplessness flooded his heart. Deep down, Ethan knew he was trapped in a vicious cycle (恶性循环). He hated wasting precious weekend time on virtual games, yet he could not tear himself away once he picked up the mouse. He intended to finish school assignments and exercise outdoors, but every good plan ended up in failure. He felt isolated and confused, not knowing how to drag himself out of the mess.
Just then, his mom pushed the door open gently, holding a cup of warm water. She had noticed his door closed all afternoon and knew he had been stuck in front of the screen again. She placed the water on his desk softly and patted his tired shoulder lightly. “You’ve been sitting here for hours. Your dad and I were worried about you. Weekends are for rest and recharge,” she said in a gentle, helpless tone.
Ethan hung his head, a sharp sense of guilt welling up in his chest. He did not dare to look up and meet his mom’s eyes. He knew his parents had always hoped he could develop good habits and manage his time well, but he had let them down again and again.
He suddenly realized how terrible his condition was. Long-term gaming had ruined his life and distanced him from the world. His academic performance declined rapidly, causing lots of quarrels with his parents. After a long spell of painful self-reflection, he understood he could not overcome this addiction alone. “It is high time that I should reset the button.” Ethan thought.

Ten years ago, Kristin Schell and her husband and their four children moved to a new home in Austin, Texas. She tried to connect with her new neighbours by hosting Bible studies and playgroups. But those activities required planning ahead and coordinating schedules, not to mention cooking and cleaning.
One day, Kristin needed backyard furniture for a party and bought a few picnic tables from Lowe’s. The delivery driver set one table down in her front yard by mistake, and Kristin couldn’t get the image out of her head. “After the party, I painted the table turquoise green — my favourite colour — and put it in the front yard, just a few feet from the sidewalk,” she says.
That turquoise green table became the place where Kristin and her kids hung out. Activities they used to do at the kitchen table, they now did out front at the picnic table. They played games, did crafts and ate snacks. “We got intentional about where we spent our time,” Kristin says. “We became ‘front yard people’.”
Neighbours began to stop by to introduce themselves and sit down for a chat. Kristin invited people to join her at the table for coffee or iced tea. “It was a simple way to slow down and connect with others,” she says. The turquoise green table was inviting and had a communal (共有的) feel.
Construction workers on jobs in the neighbourhood took their lunch breaks at the table. A babysitter walking by with her young charges sat down to rest. Then neighbours asked Kristin if their family could put a picnic table in their front yard too. A movement was born.
People often hesitate to invite others into their homes. They think their house is too messy, it’s not big enough or they don’t have enough time. “Our perfectionism can cause us to miss out on the joy of connecting with others,” Kristin says. Her picnic table takes away the excuses — and the pressure.

I still remember that afternoon clearly. The gym was dull, the air thick with the smell of sweat, and Coach Ryan’s voice echoed off the walls as usual: “Great job, Jake! That’s my boy!”
Jake. Always Jake.
I sat on the bench, wiping my face with a towel, watching Jake sink another three-pointer. Ryan clapped like he’d just witnessed a miracle. When I made the same shot five minutes earlier, Ryan only nodded and said, “Keep it up, Mike.”
I’d been on the team for two years. I practiced harder than anyone, arriving early, staying late. But no matter what I did, Jake was the one Ryan praised. Jake got the starting position. Jake got the special attention. Jake got everything. Something cold and hard settled in my chest. Fine, I thought. I’ll show him. I’ll show everyone.
The inter-school group stage game arrived on a Saturday morning. The gym was packed with students, parents, teachers. The noise was deafening. We were down by two points with thirty seconds left. The ball was in my hands. I saw Jake wide open to my right. I saw our center under the basket, waving for a pass. I saw Ryan gesturing from the sideline. I didn’t pass. I drove forward, ignoring two defenders, and launched a contested shot. The ball hit the rim and bounced away. The other team grabbed the rebound, and the buzzer sounded. We lost.
Silence filled the gym, at least, it felt like silence to me. My teammates stood frozen. Jake stared at me, disbelief in his eyes. I wanted to disappear.
After the game, Ryan gathered us in the locker room. His face was calm, but his eyes were serious. No one spoke. I prepared myself for the criticism, the shouting, the blame I deserved. Ryan looked at each of us slowly. Then he spoke, his voice low but steady. “Boys, basketball isn’t about one person. It’s about five fingers on a hand. When they work together, they form a fist. Tonight, we didn’t lose because of one shot. We lost because we stopped trusting each other. I don’t care how many points you score. I care about whether you lift each other up or tear each other down.”
His words hit me like a physical blow. I lowered my head, unable to meet anyone’s eyes. That night, I couldn’t sleep. Ryan’s words replayed in my mind over and over—five fingers, one fist.

In the heart of the ancient town, there stood a small paper-cutting studio, tucked away between two modern boutiques. Master Lin, the owner, had been devoted to the folk art of paper-cutting for over forty years. His works were breathtaking: vivid dragons and phoenixes and delicate Chinese characters—all lifelike, with every cut precise and smooth. Locals praised his craftsmanship as a living treasure of the town.
He had two apprentices (学徒): his trendy college granddaughter Lin Xue, and Li Mo, a quiet boy who stuck firmly to tradition. Though they practiced hard, Master Lin always shook his head. “You copy the shapes, but not the soul of the craft,” he would say.
Across the street was a popular modern handicraft store. Its owner often mocked the old studio, saying young people preferred fashionable crafts over outdated paper-cuttings. Master Lin remained calm and kept working.
When Master Lin fell seriously ill and later passed away, Lin Xue and Li Mo tried their best to run the studio. However, fewer and fewer customers stepped in. Business decreased day by day, and the studio was on the edge of closing down.
Lin Xue was eager to make changes: replace the old red paper with colorful craft paper, design simple cartoon patterns, and sell small paper-cutting keychains online. But Li Mo firmly disagreed, insisting that they must stick to Master Lin’s traditional techniques. One day, while tidying up Master Lin’s worktable, Lin Xue found a tattered sketchbook filled with his drafts: cartoon-style paper-cuttings of ancient characters, mini paper-cutting bookmarks, and notes written in his shaky handwriting:
“Traditional patterns are the root, but new designs can let more people see the beauty of paper-cutting. Keep the soul, change the form. Pass on the craft, not just the old looks.”

I am Lisa. I’ve always been crazy about exploring the unknown and solving problems — whether fixing a broken toy or figuring out how a phone app works. This led me to join our school’s Coding (编程) Club. In our first lesson, Ms. Johnson told us that coding is more than writing lines of code. It is about using technology to make life easier for others.
“Your project,” Ms. Johnson announced in class one day, “is to create a simple app that solves a real-life problem.” “You have one week to prepare,” she added gently, hoping this would give us enough time to find inspiration and finish the project.
The challenge stayed with me as I walked to my neighbor Mrs. Bush’s apartment after school. She had invited me for tea, as she often did on Tuesdays. Mrs. Bush was kind and cheerful, but lately she had been a little forgetful, often misplacing her keys or repeating the same story twice without realizing it. When I arrived, she was in the kitchen.
“Lisa! Good timing,” she greeted me warmly, and then stopped, glancing at the kettle. “Did I already boil water for tea?”
I checked the kettle — it was still warm. We laughed about it as I poured water, and soon we were chatting. Our conversation turned to her weekly book club with friends. Mrs. Bush smiled, talking about her two old friends. Mr. Brown arrived late for the game, and Mrs. Smith failed to bring her glasses twice. “We’re quite a group,” she said.
Then her expression grew thoughtful. “We manage, of course. But sometimes I think — wouldn’t it be nice if something simply reminds us? Take medicine. Water the plants. Friday for book club.” She tapped her head with a soft laugh.
Her words sank in. At that moment, an idea formed in my mind. As I stood up to leave, I smiled mysteriously, “Give me a few days, and I’ll bring you a little surprise.”
“Oh? I’ll try not to forget that,” she laughed.

Sixteen-year-old Elise Raurell had lived in South Florida all her life, a coastal region where warm ocean winds often gave way to fierce summer storms. However, nothing quite prepared her for the damage caused by Hurricane Irma that hit the region. When the massive storm swept through her neighborhood, it left behind a scene of chaotic destruction — uprooted pine trees blocking roads, broken glass scattered (散落) across sidewalks, continuous power failure, and flooded streets. In the frightening days that followed, as families struggled to live without electricity or clean water, Elise noticed a deeply troubling reality. While adults tried their best to handle emergency repairs and secure basic supplies, teenagers and children were totally confused, having no fundamental understanding of how to protect themselves before, during, or after such a natural disaster.
Driven by curiosity and a growing sense of responsibility, Elise began asking around at local high schools, assuming that emergency response measures were surely integrated into the standard curriculum (课程). To her shock, she discovered a great gap in the school system. Despite living in one of the most hurricane-prone regions in the nation, public schools offered virtually no formal instruction on hurricane preparedness and emergency safety. Crucial, life-saving knowledge — such as how to prepare a practical emergency survival kit, how to avoid standing floodwater where fallen power lines might pose a deadly risk, or how to identify safe internal rooms away from glass windows during high winds-was entirely absent from classroom lessons.
The realization hit her hard: if students weren’t taught these vital skills at school, many would remain dangerously unprepared when the next storm hit. Determined to bridge this critical gap and safeguard her peers, Elise decided that if no one else was going to teach these life-saving lessons, she would have to step up and do it herself.

It was a bitter November afternoon when Mark, a quiet retired carpenter (木匠), went for his daily walk along the river near his town. The wind was blowing hard, and snow had begun to cover the icy riverbanks. As Mark walked along the dangerous path, a sudden loud bark broke the silence. He stopped and looked down toward the river’s edge.
There, trapped in the freezing water, was a small, muddy dog. It was desperately holding onto a floating piece of ice with its front paws, its back legs deep in the freezing water. The dog was shaking heavily, its strength visibly declining. Mark’s heart sank — the water was deep and the riverbank was steep and covered in slick (湿滑的) ice.
Mark knew he couldn’t jump into the water himself without putting his own life at risk. Looking around anxiously, he spotted a long, strong wooden fallen branch nearby. He pulled it to the edge, lay flat on his stomach on the ice to keep his balance, and stretched the branch as far as he could toward the dog. “Come on, buddy, hold it!” Mark called out to encourage it.
The dog seemed to understand. With its last bit of strength, it moved forward quickly and bit tightly onto the end of the branch. Mark pulled with all his strength, slowly moving the dog closer to the bank until he could finally reach down, catch the dog by the leg, and pull it onto safe ground.
The rescued dog was totally wet, shaking, and had no collar. Mark wrapped the little dog in his heavy winter coat, held it close to his chest, and rushed home. Once inside, he dried the dog off, fed it a hot meal, and set up a warm bed by the heater. Mark then placed an online “Found Dog” notice on the town’s social media page, expecting an owner to claim the sweet pup soon. But as the days turned into weeks, nobody came forward.

Late on a sunny winter afternoon, Jake, a tourist from another city, wandered along Haigeng Dam beside Dianchi Lake. He had traveled thousands of miles just for these white red-billed gulls. Every year, the gulls fly all the way from Siberia to spend their winter days by the lake. Crowds of visitors spread along the wide bank, holding special bird food and taking photos as gulls swept past their out-stretched hands.
The lively scene excited Jake greatly. He raised his phone again and again, trying to catch a perfect close-up shot. Yet every time the gull got near, it turned away before his camera could focus. An idea flashed through his mind. If he could hold one gently for a second, he would surely get an unforgettable picture. Without a second thought, he reached out his hand when a gull swooped down for food.
The gull struggled wildly and gave a sharp cry. Several nearby visitors noticed the action at once and called out to stop him. Shocked, Jake opened his hand immediately. The frightened bird beat its wings hard and flew back toward the open water. Warm excitement faded away, replaced by deep shame. He had never realized that such a quick move could cause such great fear.
A local elderly volunteer walked over. Instead of shouting, he told Jake about the long hard journey each gull had completed. Those light-boned birds could easily get hurt in a sudden struggle. Good-intentioned wishes were not enough. True respect meant keeping a proper distance. Jake stood quietly by the rail, his face burning. He knew he had learned a hard-won lesson that afternoon.

James and Ally had been looking forward to their wilderness adventure for months. For the past year and a half, they had been working extra hours and saving every penny for what they believed would be the holiday of a lifetime. The six-day forest hike was to be the highlight of their trip — a chance to explore places few tourists ever reached.
They had prepared carefully: a detailed map, a GPS device, enough food and water, and an emergency radio. Both were experienced hikers, and they felt confident about travelling through the forest on their own. The first two days were challenging but exciting. The heat was intense, and the air felt heavy. Colorful birds flew above them, and strange sounds could be heard everywhere. They walked alongside a river where they spotted a few wooden boats moving on it. The boats reminded them that local people lived nearby, but they thought little of it at the time.
On the third night, they chose to camp on a small hillside clearing, far from the river, thinking it would be safer and drier. The sky was clear, and they fell asleep under the stars, believing the hardest part was behind them. But late that night, a violent storm hit without warning. Strong winds tore their tent apart, and rain poured down like a curtain. They hurried to gather their belongings, but the rain made everything wet within minutes. Their paper map became soft and wet. The GPS screen flashed and stopped working, and the emergency radio also failed. Most of their food was ruined, and only a few bottles of water and some snacks in their backpacks survived. Dawn broke over a changed world, and the forest around them looked unfamiliar. Without any tools to find their way, they were completely lost.
For a long moment, neither spoke. Then Ally looked at the rushing river and said hopefully, “We saw wooden boats passing on this river before. Local villagers often travel by boat here. If we stay by the bank, maybe a boat will pass by and save us.”

参考答案
1.
Then Mr. Lee remembered the cold storage room. His heart nearly stopped. He ran to the guard room, grabbed the key, and rushed back. He pushed the key into the lock and turned it hard. With a heavy click, the door opened. There was Anna, lying on the floor, her lips turning purple and her body trembling. Mr. Lee knelt down, took off his coat, and wrapped it around her. Then he carried her out and called for help. Soon, other guards came, covering her with blankets and giving her warm water. She was saved just in time.
Later, Anna thanked Mr. Lee with tears in her eyes. “You saved my life,” she said, holding his hand. Mr. Lee shook his head. “No, Anna. It was you who saved yourself. Your daily friendliness kept you in my heart. I remembered your ‘Goodbye’. That is why I came.” Anna understood then that small acts of friendliness are never wasted. They plant seeds of hope. She realized that when we treat others with warmth, we protect ourselves. A simple “Hello” may one day become the light that leads us out of darkness.

“Hospitality (好客) doesn’t always mean entertaining people with a meal or a big party,” Kristin said. Instead, the picnic table serves as a welcoming space where neighbours can gather and engage in casual conversations. The simplicity of sharing a cup of coffee or a cold drink eliminates the stress associated with hosting large gatherings. This concept aligns with the essence of her movement, which is centred around fostering connections within communities. Many years after their Texas beginnings, thousands of Turquoise Green Tables exist in nearly all states in America.
Not all of the tables in Texas and other states are actually turquoise green. Some have adopted different colours to match their personal preferences or school colours, like the purple tables at Texas Christian University. However, regardless of their colour, these tables embody the same principle: they are symbols of friendship and community-building. The Turquoise Green Tables initiative has not only spread across the United States but also reached international shores, proving its universal appeal in bridging gaps between neighbours.

Weeks later, we faced the same team again in the semifinals. The score was still tied with only seconds left on the clock. Two defenders closed in on me, but I heard Jake call for the ball from the corner. I passed the ball at once. He caught the ball, took a breath and released a clean three-pointer. The buzzer sounded as it went in. Our bench rushed over, and Coach Ryan gave us a silent thumbs-up. I finally understood: five fingers, one fist. We hugged, laughing and crying.

Holding the sketchbook tightly, the two youngsters made a decision together. They would combine tradition with innovation. Li Mo kept using the classic cutting skills Master Lin had taught them, ensuring every piece was delicate and full of soul. Meanwhile, Lin Xue designed fresh patterns: cute cartoon animals, tiny flower bookmarks and keychains. They also packaged the works nicely and promoted them online, hoping to attract more young people. Both were full of hope, determined to carry on the precious folk art.
Months later, the quiet paper-cutting studio was completely different. It was crowded with customers of all ages. Tourists took photos and bought the creative paper-cuttings. Even the owner of the opposite store came over to admire them. More importantly, many young people who were drawn to the fresh designs came to admire the art and even learn basic cutting skills. On arriving home, I sat at my desk, notebook open and mind racing with details. I decided to design a gentle reminder app especially for the elderly. I listed simple functions: important dates, daily tasks, and warm notes. I focused on making the words big and the buttons easy to touch. Whenever I felt stuck, I thought of Mrs. Bush’s kind smile and her wish for something to help her remember. I carefully tested every part again and again, making sure it was simple and helpful. Deep in my heart, I hoped this little app could bring convenience and warmth to her and more elderly people.
A week later, I presented my project to Ms. Johnson. I introduced the app’s purpose and showed how it worked. Ms. Johnson praised my thoughtful idea and spoke highly of my project. After class, I brought the app to Mrs. Bush. She was delighted and tried it at once. “This is exactly what I need,” she said happily. Watching her smile, I truly understood what Ms. Johnson had meant: coding is not just writing lines of code, but a way to use technology to care for others.

That’s when Elise took matters into her own hands. She spent weeks researching official hurricane safety guidelines from FEMA and the Red Cross, then carefully designed a concise, student-friendly mini-course called Storm Smart. Packed with vivid infographics and hands-on drills — like assembling a survival kit and practicing “safe-room” sheltering — the program turned dry safety rules into engaging lessons. She approached her school principal, who, impressed by her initiative and the clear community need, approved it as an after-school club. Word spread quickly; soon dozens of eager teens signed up to learn how to protect themselves and their families.
Elise’s dedication to the mini-course, Storm Smart, finally paid off. Within a year, the program expanded to three neighboring schools, training over 400 students in life-saving preparedness. Local media spotlighted her efforts, and the county school board even adopted Storm Smart into the official health-education curriculum. When another hurricane threatened the coast months later, Elise’s trained peers calmly secured their homes and guided younger siblings to safety — zero serious injuries were reported among participating families. Reflecting on her journey, Elise realized that one teenager’s determination could truly transform an entire community’s resilience against nature’s fury.

One evening, a sudden knock came at Mark’s door. He opened it, only to find a middle-aged woman standing there, her eyes swollen and filled with tears. “I saw your post online,” she whispered, her voice trembling. Before Mark could reply, the dog burst out of the living room, barking with pure joy and throwing itself eagerly into the woman’s arms. She knelt down, hugging the dog tightly while tears streamed down her cheeks. The woman explained that the dog had gone missing two weeks before, and she had almost given up hope of ever finding him alive.
Looking at the emotional reunion, Mark felt a mix of relief and sadness. Over the past days, the little creature had become his close companion, filling his quiet house with warmth. However, seeing the genuine love between the dog and its owner, Mark knew this was the happiest ending. The woman repeatedly expressed her deep gratitude and warmly invited Mark to visit them anytime. As he waved goodbye to them under the soft porch light, Mark turned back into the house. Though the house felt a little empty, his heart was full, warmed by the bond they had shared and the miracle of kindness.

Jake stayed by the lake long after most visitors left. He still had some gull food picked up earlier and waited patiently. With no more sudden reaches, he held the food steady in his open palm and kept his body still. Gulls circled overhead, and several finally landed lightly to pick up food. He watched them closely, treasuring every second without any desire to touch. Soft wind carried gulls’ cries across the dam, calming his shame. He kept his voice low out of respect for the nervous birds. He also helped the volunteer remind excited tourists to keep their hands to themselves. He stuck to this gentle way of observing birds for the rest of his holiday.
When his short trip to Kunming came to an end, Jake had completely changed his attitude towards wild-bird watching. He took no special close-up photos of gulls. Instead, he filled his camera with wide shots of thousands of white wings flying above Dianchi Lake. Those vivid pictures recorded the real beauty of wild birds in their natural state. Every scene was rooted in his real-life experience. Before boarding his flight back, he wrote down what he had learned. He hoped his experience could warn others against similar silly mistakes. He intended to share them with his friends ever afterwards. He stored these precious memories deep in his heart. The best gift for these long-distance travelers was never a forced short meeting, but enough space to fly without fear.

Hearing Ally’s suggestion, James nodded in agreement. They gathered their leftover belongings and made their way carefully down the slippery hillside to the river bank. Soaked clothes stuck to their skin, making them shake with cold. They kept staring at the river, eagerly hoping for a passing wooden boat. Time dragged on painfully, but no boat showed up. James sank onto a stone, almost losing heart. Ally stayed positive, reminding him that they must hold on for survival. But as another hour passed without any sign of rescue, even her encouraging words began to fade.
When they were at the point of giving up, soft sounds of rowing reached their ears. A wooden boat rounded the river bend. They waved their hands and cried out for help with all their strength. The local villagers noticed them and rowed over quickly. They pulled the exhausted pair onto the boat, providing dry clothes and simple food. Safe at last, James and Ally expressed sincere thanks to the kind-hearted villagers. Though their dream adventure turned into a terrifying disaster, they learned a valuable lesson: even experienced hikers should respect the unpredictable power of wild nature.

一、阅读理解
A
Before meeting a client, Virginia Chang performs a fixed procedure she calls “becoming an empty vessel (器皿).” Standing on the busy streets of New York City, she closes her eyes, plants her feet firmly on the ground, and breathes deeply. She quiets her mind to set aside her own worries and cares. This preparation is essential for her unique job: she is an end-of-life doula.
The word “doula” originates from Greek, meaning “woman who serves.” While birth doulas support mothers during labor, end-of-life doulas like Chang accompany people in their final days. Their role is non-medical; at its core, it is an act of companionship toward the unknown. They might help clients express their wishes regarding medical treatment, offer Swedish death cleaning services, or simply sit and listen.
One of Chang’s clients was Eleanor Lennard, a 101-year-old woman living in an apartment on East Fifty-second Street. Eleanor had lost her husband for more than two decades. Nearly all of her friends were dead, and she had lost most of her sight. Although her mind was still sharp, she felt lonely and left out. She wanted to have conversations, to discuss art and literature. When her care facility learned this, they sent Chang.
Chang had been seeing Eleanor weekly since January. However, one afternoon, a caregiver reported that Eleanor was upset and confused. She had tried to get out of bed by herself and had to be restricted. Inside the apartment, the shades were drawn. Family portraits decorated the hallway: smiling children and a couple leaning toward each other in a private moment of happiness. Two caregivers eased Eleanor from her bedroom to an armchair in the study. She sat there, looking small and fragile.
When Chang arrived, she didn’t rush to fix anything. She simply sat beside Eleanor, holding her hand and breathing with her. Slowly, the tension left Eleanor’ s body. “I just wanted to go to the window,” Eleanor whispered. “I wanted to see the light.” Chang helped her move to the window, where the late afternoon sun was streaming in. They sat together in silence, watching the light change on the buildings across the street. In that moment, there was no medical crisis, no family anxiety, just two human beings sharing the quiet beauty of being alive.
1.What is the main purpose of Chang’s fixed procedure before meeting a client?
A.To pray for the client’s recovery.
B.To practice breathing exercises for health.
C.To clear her mind of personal distractions.
D.To memorize the client’s medical history.
2.Why did Eleanor feel “lonely and left out” according to the text?
A.Her daughter rarely visited her in the hospital.
B.She had lost her sight and couldn’t take photos.
C.The caregivers in the facility were too busy to talk to her.
D.She lacked meaningful social interaction and connection.
3.What is the author’s attitude towards the role of end-of-life doulas?
A.Appreciative and respectful. B.Objective and indifferent.
C.Critical and skeptical. D.Sympathetic but doubtful.
4.What can be inferred about the “light” Eleanor wanted to see at the end of the story?
A.It reminded her of her late husband.
B.It symbolized her hope for a medical cure.
C.It represented a moment of peace and presence.
D.It reflected her regret for missing the beautiful sunset.
【答案】1.C 2.D 3.A 4.C
【解析】这篇文章主要讲述了临终陪伴师Virginia Chang见委托人前会放空自己。她陪伴孤独的百岁老人Eleanor,安静相守,陪老人感受阳光,给予温暖的精神陪伴。
1.细节理解题。根据第一段中“She quiets her mind to set aside her own worries and cares. This preparation is essential for her unique job: she is an end-of-life doula.( 她让自己的心平静下来,把自己的烦恼和忧虑放在一边。这种准备对她的特殊工作至关重要:她是一名临终陪伴者。)”可知,Chang在会见客户前进行固定程序的主要目的是平复思绪,把个人的担忧与杂念放到一边。
2.推理判断题。根据第三段“One of Chang’s clients was Eleanor Lennard, a 101-year-old woman living in an apartment on East Fifty-second Street. Eleanor had lost her husband for more than two decades. Nearly all of her friends were dead, and she had lost most of her sight. Although her mind was still sharp, she felt lonely and left out. She wanted to have conversations, to discuss art and literature. When her care facility learned this, they sent Chang.( Chang’的一位客户是Eleanor Lennard,一位101岁的老人,住在东五十二街的一间公寓里。Eleanor已失去丈夫超过二十年,几乎所有的朋友都已离世,她也失去了大部分视力。尽管思维依然清晰,但她感到孤独和被忽视。她渴望交流,希望谈论艺术与文学。当她的护理机构得知此事后,便派了Chang去探望。)”可推知,Eleanor孤独的根源是缺少有深度、有意义的社交互动与情感联结。
3.推理判断题。根据第一段中“This preparation is essential for her unique job: she is an end-of-life doula.( 这种准备对她的特殊工作至关重要:她是一名临终陪伴者。)”、第二段中“While birth doulas support mothers during labor, end-of-life doulas like Chang accompany people in their final days. Their role is non-medical; at its core, it is an act of companionship toward the unknown.( 分娩导乐师在分娩期间为产妇提供支持,而像Chang这样的临终陪伴者则陪伴人们度过生命的最后时光。她们的角色非医疗性质,本质上是一种面对未知的陪伴。)”以及最后一段中“In that moment, there was no medical crisis, no family anxiety, just two human beings sharing the quiet beauty of being alive.( 那一刻,没有医疗危机,也没有家人的焦虑,只有两个人共享着生命中这份静谧的美。)”可推知,作者对临终陪护职业的态度是赞赏且尊重的。
4.推理判断题。根据最后一段中““I just wanted to go to the window,” Eleanor whispered. “I wanted to see the light.” Chang helped her move to the window, where the late afternoon sun was streaming in. They sat together in silence, watching the light change on the buildings across the street. In that moment, there was no medical crisis, no family anxiety, just two human beings sharing the quiet beauty of being alive.( “我只是想走到窗前,” Eleanor低声说。“我想看到光明。”Chang帮她挪到窗边,夕阳的余晖正洒进来。他们安静地坐着,望着街对面建筑上光影变幻。那一刻,没有医疗危机,也没有家人的焦虑,只有两个人共享着生命中这份静谧的美。)”可知,关于Eleanor在故事结尾想要看到的“光”,我们可以推断出它代表了一刻的平静与陪伴。

Researchers from the University of Buenos Aires have successfully used a robotic tutor to teach the male chingolo, a kind of small bird in South America, a song that was once part of the species’ culture but had been lost for more than half a century.
Male chingolos learn their unique, two-second melody from adult males. “It is a distinctive song — like a fingerprint, but learned,” says one of the researchers. “It serves to attract females and protect territory. It is the birds’ way of saying, ‘This is me, and here I am.’” However, urbanization and habitat loss have broken this learning chain, causing local song “dialects” to disappear.
Driven by this problem, researchers took on a pioneering task: bringing back a song that had disappeared from the wild — known only from a musical record made in the 1960s — to a population of chingolos.
Using physics-based modeling of the birds’ vocal tract (声道), the team first created an accurate artificial version of the lost song. They then engineered this model into a physical device designed to broadcast the forgotten melody — a “robotic tutor”. This artificial song was introduced to the chingolos in a park during their critical learning period from October to February. The sessions took place during peak singing hours and were limited to a maximum of eight hours. There were random pauses in between so that the birds interpreted the playback from the three devices placed in the area as a real exchange, as if these devices were responding to each other. This stimulated the birds’ vocal responses.
The results were impressive. Young chingolos learned and adopted the song, though they added their own population’s “accent” to the final trill (颤音), which showed that their singing is shaped by learned behaviors and inborn characteristics.
“This is about preserving not just genetic, but cultural biodiversity,” says another researcher. The team is now developing AI systems to automatically identify individual bird songs and planning to study cultural spread in bird populations to ensure that bird culture is not lost again.
5.Why did the researchers teach the birds the song?
A.To save an endangered species. B.To study the birds’ brain structure.
C.To develop new robotic devices. D.To preserve the birds’ cultural heritage.
6.What is a role of chingolos’ song?
A.It keeps hunters away from them. B.It helps them adapt to urban growth.
C.It functions as their social identity. D.It makes them remember their habitat.
7.What is the purpose of the random pauses?
A.To protect the birds’ vocal tract. B.To test the birds’ reaction speed.
C.To push the birds to catch the beat. D.To trick the birds into interaction.
8.What do the birds’ learning results suggest?
A.Young birds simply copy what they hear. B.Birds song reflects both learning and nature.
C.Local accents make new songs hard to learn. D.Bird populations develop songs independently.
【答案】5.D 6.C 7.D 8.B
【解析】本文主要介绍科研人员利用机器人导师,成功让南美一种小鸟重新学会消失半个多世纪的鸟鸣,保护鸟类文化多样性。
5.细节理解题。根据最后一段““This is about preserving not just genetic, but cultural biodiversity,” says another researcher. The team is now developing AI systems to automatically identify individual bird songs and planning to study cultural spread in bird populations to ensure that bird culture is not lost again. (另一位研究人员说:“这不仅仅是为了保护基因多样性,也是为了保护文化多样性。”该团队正在开发人工智能系统,用来自动识别鸟类个体鸣唱,并计划研究鸟类种群中的文化传播,确保鸟类文化不再消失)”可知,研究者教鸟儿鸣叫是为了保护鸟类的文化遗产。
6.推理判断题。根据第二段““It is a distinctive song — like a fingerprint, but learned,” says one of the researchers. “It serves to attract females and protect territory. It is the birds’ way of saying, ‘This is me, and here I am.’”(这是一种独特的鸣唱——如同指纹一般,但却是后天习得的。它用来吸引雌鸟、保卫领地。这是鸟儿表达“这就是我,我就在这里”的方式。)”可知,这种鸟鸣充当它们的社会身份。
7.细节理解题。根据第四段“There were random pauses in between so that the birds interpreted the playback from the three devices placed in the area as a real exchange, as if these devices were responding to each other. This stimulated the birds’ vocal responses.(播放过程中设置随机停顿,让鸟儿把三台设备的播放声当成真实交流,仿佛设备之间在互相回应。这激发鸟儿做出鸣叫回应)”可知,随机停顿的目的是诱使鸟儿产生互动。
8.细节理解题。根据第五段“The results were impressive. Young chingolos learned and adopted the song, though they added their own population’s “accent” to the final trill (颤音), which showed that their singing is shaped by learned behaviors and inborn characteristics.(年轻的南美歌鹀学会并接受了这支鸣唱,不过它们会在最后的颤音里加入自己种群的 “口音”,这说明它们的鸣唱同时受后天习得行为和先天特质影响)”可知,鸟类的鸣唱既反映后天学习也反映先天本性。

London buses have a cool secret. Viewed from above, they are often white, not red. This heat-reduction measure, which began in 2004 with the intention of making journeys more comfortable for passengers, was complete by 2020. But buses still struggle to cope with rising temperatures.
One of the solutions may be to make them even whiter. A group at University College London (UCL), led by Ioannis Papakonstantinou, has painted the tops of two buses with material that reflects 93% of sunlight. Commercial white paint manages 84%. The difference might sound small, but it takes the new coating over a critical point: it emits more heat than it absorbs from the sun.
Radiative coatings are coming to market. And not a moment too soon. Climate change makes space-cooling increasingly necessary. It accounted for 10% of the world’s electricity use in 2025, up from 6% in 1990. And, working by pumping heat out of buildings, air-conditioners help create urban “heat islands”.
The secret of radiative cooling lies in materials that treat visible and infrared (红外线的) light differently. At any given wavelength, a substance can be a good emitter or a good reflector, but not both. Yet to cool below the temperature of its surroundings, an object must reflect energy from the sun while emitting its own pent-up heat.
The group at UCL mixes particles of aerogel (气凝胶) into a polymer (聚合物). Differences between the light-bending abilities of the aerogel and the polymer, and the fact that the particles are about the same size as the wavelength of light, both cause incoming light rays to bounce off the aerogel particles, giving the paint its high reflectivity. Meanwhile, the aerogel and the polymer permit the paint to shed heat directly into outer space.
The group’s work is not yet ready for mass production, but other radiative coatings are already on sale. i2Cool, a company in Hong Kong, includes particles made of a variety of materials in a range of sizes to do the reflecting. i2Cool says that it has covered 850,000 square metres of buildings with its coatings — an area equivalent to 119 football pitches — and thus avoided 14,000 tonnes of air-conditioning-related carbon-dioxide emissions. Which is, as it were, the coolest thing of all.
9.What can we learn about the UCL group’s new coating?
A.It comes to the market too soon.
B.It was first used on London buses in 2004.
C.It makes buses absorb more heat than they emit.
D.It reflects more sunlight than the commercial white paint.
10.How do radiative coatings cool an object according to the passage?
A.By absorbing invisible and infrared light.
B.By pumping heat out of the object with electricity.
C.By reflecting sunlight while releasing the object’s own heat.
D.By mixing aerogel with polymer to block all wavelengths.
11.What does the example of i2Cool indicate?
A.UCL’s new coating has entered mass production.
B.Radiative coatings are practical and eco-friendly.
C.Cooling coatings will replace air-conditioners soon.
D.Hong Kong leads the world in cooling technology.
12.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A.Whiter Paint, Cooler Planet B.London Buses: A Cool Secret
C.i2Cool: Coating the World in White D.How Air-Conditioners Heat Up Cities
【答案】9.D 10.C 11.B 12.A
【解析】文章介绍一种新型辐射降温涂料,它比普通白漆反射更多阳光,可以向外太空释放热量,由此达到降温效果,在缓解城市高温方面有应用前景。
9.细节理解题。根据第二段“A group at University College London (UCL), led by Ioannis Papakonstantinou, has painted the tops of two buses with material that reflects 93% of sunlight. Commercial white paint manages 84%.(由伊奥尼斯·帕帕康斯坦丁努带领的伦敦大学学院(UCL)研究小组,将一种能反射93%太阳光的材料涂在了两辆公交车的车顶。市面上普通白漆仅能反射84%的阳光)”可知,这种新型涂层比商用白漆反射更多太阳光。
10.细节理解题。根据第四段“Yet to cool below the temperature of its surroundings, an object must reflect energy from the sun while emitting its own pent-up heat.(想要让物体温度低于周围环境,它必须反射来自太阳的能量,同时释放自身积聚的热量)”可知,辐射制冷涂层通过反射阳光并且释放物体自身热量来制冷。
11.推理判断题。根据第六段“i2Cool says that it has covered 850,000 square metres of buildings with its coatings — an area equivalent to 119 football pitches — and thus avoided 14,000 tonnes of air-conditioning-related carbon-dioxide emissions.(i2Cool公司称已经在85万平方米建筑上使用该涂层,相当于119个足球场,减少了14000吨空调相关的二氧化碳排放)”可知,这个例子说明辐射涂层实用且环保。
12.主旨大意题。根据第二段“A group at University College London (UCL), led by Ioannis Papakonstantinou, has painted the tops of two buses with material that reflects 93% of sunlight. Commercial white paint manages 84%. The difference might sound small, but it takes the new coating over a critical point: it emits more heat than it absorbs from the sun.(由伊奥尼斯·帕帕康斯坦丁努带领的伦敦大学学院(UCL)研究小组,将一种能反射93%太阳光的材料涂在了两辆公交车的车顶。市面上普通白漆仅能反射84%的阳光。这个差值听起来不大,却让这款新型涂层跨过了一个关键临界点:它散发出的热量多于从太阳吸收的热量)”结合文章围绕高反射制冷涂层展开,介绍原理、应用以及降温减碳的作用可知,A选项“更白的涂料,更凉爽的地球”最符合文章标题。

At around midnight, after a day shaped by other people’s deadlines, someone sits in bed choosing between two colors of the same lamp. The decision feels unusually absorbing. For ten minutes, no manager, partner, parent, or calendar can disturb it. The final click produces a small, clean sense of command. The lamp is not really the point. What has been purchased, for a moment, is authorship. A life filled with obligation has offered one complete sequence — desire, choice, action, reward — in which the buyer’s preference appears to be final.
This explains why material desire rises when personal freedom is limited. Consumption is not always greed or weak discipline. It acts as compensation for a self with little room to direct time, refuse demands, change course, or make independent choices. Modern constraint (束缚) rarely appears as a locked door. It exists in work-filled schedules, demanding relationships, and a respectable life built on unchosen standards. Many people stay functional and successful, yet live by external instructions, with few moments of self-authored life.
Shopping offers a fast exit from this powerlessness and brings instant satisfaction, a contrast to life’s delayed and uncertain rewards. Yet daily life remains unchanged after each purchase. The demanding job remains demanding and Sunday evening still carries its familiar weight. When novelty fades, the unfulfilled emotional need remains, triggering a vicious (恶性的) cycle. Consumption, therefore, slowly turns into another form of constraint. However, genuine material pleasure enriches life, and true preference stands the test of time. Instead of blaming oneself for indiscipline, people should reflect on what choices they lacked that day. Small autonomous acts and delayed consumption help people reconnect with their real needs and rebuild freedom gradually.
Structural hardships cannot be solved by shopping, yet recognizing this cycle avoids unnecessary self-blame. That night, the lamp stays in the cart. The person sets a clear work boundary, reclaiming a precious unscheduled hour. Nothing new has arrived, yet something has been returned.
13.What does the example of choosing a lamp mainly illustrate?
A.The emotional appeal of material possessions.
B.The complexity of everyday decision-making.
C.The psychological motive behind consumption.
D.The importance of showing personal preferences.
14.Which of the following can be a modern constraint?
A.Feeling satisfied after a flash purchase.
B.Living according to standards set by others.
C.Being kept inside a room with a locked door.
D.Lacking money to buy desired household goods.
15.According to paragraph 3, what do we gain from shopping?
A.Lasting satisfaction. B.Ultimate relief.
C.Temporary comfort. D.Gradual fulfillment.
16.What is a suitable title for the text?
A.Consumption: A Cure for Powerlessness
B.Shopping: A Search for Personal Control
C.Material Satisfaction: A Ticket to Freedom
D.Purchases: An Exploration of Personal Preference
【答案】13.C 14.B 15.C 16.B
【解析】文章主要论述了购物消费背后是人们寻求个人掌控与自主的心理动机。
13.推理判断题。 根据第一段中“The lamp is not really the point. What has been purchased, for a moment, is authorship. A life filled with obligation has offered one complete sequence — desire, choice, action, reward — in which the buyer’s preference appears to be final.(灯并不是真正的关键。那一刻所购买的是主导权。充满义务的生活提供了一整套完整的序列——欲望、选择、行动、回报——在其中购买者的偏好似乎是最终的)”以及第二段中“This explains why material desire rises when personal freedom is limited. Consumption is not always greed or weak discipline. It acts as compensation for a self with little room to direct time, refuse demands, change course, or make independent choices.(这解释了为什么当个人自由受限时物质欲望会上升。消费并不总代表贪婪或自律薄弱。它充当了一种补偿,补偿那个几乎没有空间去支配时间、拒绝要求、改变方向或做出独立选择的自我)”可知,选台灯的例子主要说明了消费背后的心理动机——对自主掌控的渴望。
14.细节理解题。根据第二段中“Modern constraint (束缚) rarely appears as a locked door. It exists in work-filled schedules, demanding relationships, and a respectable life built on unchosen standards.(现代的束缚很少表现为一扇锁着的门。它存在于排满工作的日程、苛求的关系以及建立在非自主选择标准上的体面生活中)”可知,按照他人设定的标准生活是一种现代束缚。
15.细节理解题。根据第三段中“Shopping offers a fast exit from this powerlessness and brings instant satisfaction, a contrast to life’s delayed and uncertain rewards. Yet daily life remains unchanged after each purchase.(购物提供了一个快速摆脱这种无力感的出口,带来即时的满足感,与生活中延迟且不确定的回报形成对比。然而每次购买后日常生活仍保持不变)”以及“When novelty fades, the unfulfilled emotional need remains, triggering a vicious (恶性的) cycle. Consumption, therefore, slowly turns into another form of constraint.(当新奇感消退时,未满足的情感需求仍然存在,引发了一个恶性循环。因此,消费慢慢变成了另一种形式的约束)”可知,购物带来的是暂时的安慰/即时满足,而非持久满足。
16.主旨大意题。 全文围绕“购物消费源于个人自由受限时人们对自主掌控的寻求”展开,指出购物是短暂获得控制感的方式,但真正解决需重建自主。故“Shopping: A Search for Personal Control(购物:对个人掌控的追寻)”最适合做标题。

Wesley pushed his plate away, complaining about the meatloaf. His mom looked at him with anger, reminding him of all the meals she had lovingly prepared. But the haughty teen shook his head, laughing, and refused to even wash his plate.
When his mother asked him to do it, Wesley crossed his arms. “Why should I? I’m not your slave! You don’t pay me, do you? Work without pay is slavery!”
His dad frowned, pointing out that they housed, fed, clothed, and educated him. However, Wesley insisted that those were their legal duties, whereas he had no responsibility to do them for free. “If you want me to do things around here, you’d better pay me!” he demanded proudly.
Instead of getting angry, Wesley’s dad smiled calmly and agreed to his son’s terms. He set up a price list: $1 for taking out the trash, $2 for washing dishes, $4 for walking the dog, $5 for cleaning his room, and $10 for mowing the lawn (修剪草坪). Wesley was joyful, believing he was about to get rich.
Little did he know, he was walking straight into a trap. Starting that very evening, the tables were turned. When Wesley complained of hunger, his parents calmly informed him that since he was now earning his own money, he had to support himself. If he wanted his mother’s cooking, he had to pay for it. Shocked and annoyed, Wesley had to draw from his poor savings to order an expensive pizza.
The next morning brought a series of defeats. His mother charged him for breakfast and for washing and ironing his clothes while his father charged him for a ride to school and expected him to pay for his own team uniforms out of his earnings. Facing mounting “expenses,” Wesley soon realized that being an “independent man” was completely unaffordable. He walked to school late, exhausted, and desperately missing home-cooked meals.
That night, Wesley came down to the kitchen, looking upset as the delicious smell of dinner filled the air. “Mom, dad?” he said quietly. “Can we talk?”
