I am told that we are experiencing a long drought here in Maine. In August, it seemed that some of the trees were already acquiring their fall colors, but on closer examination, I saw that they were turning brown for lack of water.
There is a certain irony (讽刺) here, because Maine is a “water state”. However, I did look at the drought as a guarantee that I could confidently take a long walk without getting rained on. And so I set out over the dry grass of my backyard and headed for town under a cloudless sky.
What a difference a short trip can make. On my return journey, the sky began to darken with thunder heads and, moments later, a downpour.
My first impulse (冲动), of course, was to run, in hopes of making it home before getting soaked. But within a couple of minutes, I slowed down, realizing that running was pointless. I couldn't get any wetter than I already was.
I walked along in the rain at a leisurely pace, and as I did so, I recalled charging out into the downpours with my friends, running wildly with arms and voices raised. This is a fundamental difference between childhood and adulthood: A grown-up is too careful, too concerned with manners and comfort, to deliberately walk in the rain, while a kid embraces the thick, pounding drops as a welcome change of pace.
As I passed a house, a kind woman opened her front door and waved me in. “You're getting soaked,” she said, but I declined her well-meaning offer, smiled, and walked on.

四.段落续写(范文)
Raindrops kept pouring down, washing away my worries little by little. The cold drops ran down my hair and cheeks, but I no longer cared about my wet clothes or my appearance. I spread out my arms and tilted my head back, laughing like the child I used to be. My steps grew light, and all the anxieties I had carried for weeks faded away. I even hummed a soft tune, letting the rain sweep every heavy thought away.
When I finally got back home, I stood on the porch for a while. I watched the rain fall across the yard, my hair and shirt still dripping. I felt soaked, yet strangely light and peaceful. Breathing in the fresh wet air, I smiled at myself. I realized a grown-up did not have to be so careful all the time. Sometimes a sudden shower helped me step out of my manners and welcome the world like a little kid again.
