阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项A、B、C、D中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
A
What a day! That morning, I was worried that no one would talk to me. But I was wrong. I didn’t feel awkward or frightened at all on the first day of senior high school. I miss my friends from junior high school, but I believe I will make new friends here and there’s a lot to explore at senior high school. I feel much more confident than I felt that morning.
My name is Adam and I’m a freshman at senior high school. Going from junior high school to senior high school is a really big challenge. The first week was a little confusing.
First, I had to think very carefully about which courses I wanted to take. The school adviser helped me choose the suitable ones from maths, English, chemistry, world history, Chinese and so on. I know that Chinese is a very difficult language, but I hope to be fluent when I graduate. My adviser recommended that I should sign up for advanced literature because I like English and I’m good at it.
I had to choose extra-curricular activities, too. I tried to join the school football team, but the coach told me that I didn’t play well enough. Obviously, I was unhappy, but I won’t quit. I’ll find a way to improve on my own so that I can make the team next year. I joined a volunteer club instead. Every Wednesday, we work at a soup kitchen and hand out food to homeless people in the community.
I know I’ll have to study harder as a senior high school student and get used to being responsible for a lot more. I’m a bit worried about keeping up with the other students in my advanced courses, and it’ll be quite difficult to get used to all the homework. Still, I’m happy to be here. Studying hard isn’t always fun, but I’ll be well prepared for university or whatever else comes in the future.
21.How did the author feel after the first morning of senior high school?
A.Confident. B.Disappointed. C.Frightened. D.Anxious.
22.Which course did the school adviser recommend the author to take?
A.Maths. B.Literature. C.Chinese. D.Chemistry.
23.What can we learn from paragraph 4?
A.The coach advised Adam to join a volunteer club.
B.Adam decided to make the team the next year.
C.Adam handed out food to the students in the school.
D.The coach helped Adam practice playing football.
B
When John graduated from high school, he got a job delivering(运送) pizzas. But soon he realized that it wasn’t what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. So he took a night class at a local tech school to see if welding (焊接), which joins two metals(金属)together with heat, was a skill that “was going to stick(粘合)”.
It did. John wanted to learn everything about welding and decided he’d make welding his career(职业). But one night class wouldn’t be enough. John went to Hobart Welding School in Ohio for real, technical training. Besides welding courses, John also took classes in subjects like metallurgy — the study of metal — and reading blueprints. He became more certain that he would stick to the job.
For the past 18 years, John has been a welder. He now works for the EEW Group. The company has a big project to carry out. It’s in the process of opening a factory that will produce monopiles for offshore wind turbines (涡轮机). Wind turbines produce eco-friendly electricity.
A typical day for John includes a number of tasks and skills. One minute, he’s driving a forklift. The next, he’s reading blueprints, or cutting materials. “There are a lot to deal with,” he told Time for Kids. “It’s not just welding.”
John’s favorite part of being a welder is “making an honest living”. He also takes pride in helping the environment. “I’m glad to stick to what I really want to do,” he says. “I am working for a company that is helping the country to go green, and it’s satisfying to be a part of the process.”
24.What did John use to be?
A.A deliveryman. B. welder. C.A driver. D.A cook.
25.What is the main idea of Paragraph 2?
A.What John decided to do. B.How John improved himself.
C.When John learned welding. D.Why John accepted training.
26.What is John’s daily life like?
A.Easy and satisfying. B.Tiring but educational.
C.Busy but meaningful. D.Interesting and relaxing.
27.Which can describe John’s experience?
A.Pride goes before a fall. B.One is never too young to learn.
C.Action speaks louder than words. D.One should set goals and work for it.

“Is this a high school or a small town?” I thought to myself scanning (浏览) my campus map. It was my first day of classes at my senior high school. I felt like an ant at that huge school.
I found my schedule and placed it next to the map. I had a biology class at 9:30 am in the BISIC building. I looked at my watch. It was 9:05 am, which gave me plenty of time, or so I thought. After walking around for 15 minutes, unable to find my way, I began to get very anxious. Just then a middle-aged woman in a bright purple dress approached (走近) me and asked me if I needed help. “Yes,” I said. “I am looking for the BISIC building.” A smile appeared on the lady’s face. “Oh, don’t worry, that is nearby!” She offered to direct me to my class, and I made it to my first class on time.
The strange faces around me brought a sense of loneliness. I didn’t know one person in that great big class. When my last class came to a close, the nervousness of the day finally disappeared.
It was finally time to go home. Along my walk, I recollected my classes and activities of the day and the new friends I had made. The comfort of arriving home was the best feeling that day. The day had so many things. All in all, I felt very thankful to have the chance to study in such a great high school.

Dear Peter,
I am sorry to hear that you are not happy and almost lose heart because you are unable to get used to the life in senior high school. I understand how you feel at the moment. So I’d like to share with you some ways to deal with such awful situations.
I recommend you set a study goal so that you will know what to do for that goal. Only in this way can you build up your confidence in study. While in school, it is wise for you to develop a pleasant relationship with your classmates. When you are in trouble, they will surely give you a helping hand. Besides, joining in some extra-curricular activities will offer you good chances to make friends and challenge yourself.
I hope my advice can be helpful to you. Good luck!
