A
At the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, an accident in a women’s 5,000-metre heat became a powerful example of sportsmanship. New Zealand’s Nikki Hamblin fell during the race, and American runner Abbey D’Agostino fell too. For a moment, both athletes were on the track while the other runners continued ahead.
D’Agostino got up and encouraged Hamblin to stand. Instead of leaving her competitor behind, she helped her return to the race. Soon, however, D’Agostino’s injured leg gave way and she fell again. This time, Hamblin stopped to offer help. The two women were competing for different countries, but they treated each other with care.
Both athletes eventually reached the finish line. Hamblin waited for D’Agostino, and they hugged. Their times were too slow to qualify in the usual way, but officials later allowed them into the final. D’Agostino’s injury, however, prevented her from taking part in it.
The International Fair Play Committee, with support from the International Olympic Committee, later gave both runners Fair Play awards. The awards recognised their kindness and sportsmanship, rather than a fast finishing time.
Their story invites us to think about what success in sport means. Athletes train to perform well, yet a good result is not the only thing that matters. Showing concern for another person can leave a deeper impression than a place on a results board.
1.What happened first in the race?
A.Hamblin fell on the track. B.D’Agostino missed the final.
C.Both runners received awards. D.Hamblin waited at the finish.

C.She wanted to return the award. D.Her injury stopped her from running.
4.What do we learn from the order in which the runners helped each other?
A.They knew each other well before Rio. B.Kindness can go beyond competition.
C.They planned to finish at the same time. D.A slow runner always needs more help.
5.Which is the best title for the passage?
A.A New Record in the Final B.The Fastest Way to Win
C.A Race Remembered for Kindness D.Training for a Perfect Start
【答案】1.A 2.C 3.D 4.B 5.C

3.第三段最后一句明确指出 her injury ... prevented her from taking part,故为伤情阻止参赛。

What if you want to be active but do not enjoy racing against other people? A community event called parkrun offers one answer. 1 People can walk, jog or run, and taking part costs nothing.
The idea began in London’s Bushy Park on 2 October 2004. Paul Sinton-Hewitt had been injured and missed spending time with his running friends. 2 Thirteen runners and five volunteers attended that first event. It was a small start for something that would later reach many communities.
At parkrun, you do not have to be fast to belong. Some people want to improve their time, while others want fresh air and friendly company. 3 A volunteer called the Tail Walker stays at the back and is the last person to finish. This helps participants feel that they will not be left behind.
Volunteers are an important part of the event. They record times, show people the way and support the walkers and runners. 4 Their work makes it possible for other people to take part.
The success of parkrun suggests that sport can create connections as well as improve fitness. It gives people a reason to meet regularly and support each other. 5 Sharing the experience can be a reason to return.
A.You can also help out without completing the course yourself.
B.A gold medal is therefore the only reason people keep coming.
C.It is a free, weekly 5-kilometre event.
D.So he invited some friends to meet for a timed run.
E.Nobody needs to feel embarrassed about walking.
F.For many of them, a finishing time is only part of the story.

4.本段主题是志愿者;A 的 help out without completing the course 说明不亲自完成路线也可以提供帮助,后文 Their work 指志愿者的工作。
