If, through it all

“Oh, sorry,” said Jenny. “We have a meeting after school.”

Brecken Neumann, an American from Mississippi, first connected with Rong Rong on the Chinese social media Rednote. This took place after many Americans began exploring new apps to take the place of TikTok. As one of them, Neumann posted a photo of his 16-month-old daughter on Rednote on January 14, writing, “Hello from America! We look forward to making friends across the sea!” The post received warm replies, including one from Rong Rong, who shared a photo of her 19-month-old daughter. Their simple exchange of greetings quickly got thousands of likes on the social media.
Over the following weeks, the two families chatted daily about parenting, hobbies, and even career experiences in a WeChat group named “Global Family.” Although there was a 14-hour time difference, they kept in touch with each other, communicating about their shared interests, like their love for Disney. “The more we talked, the more connected we felt,” Rong Rong said.
In March, Neumann decided to visit Shanghai with his family to meet Rong Rong in person. After a 15-hour flight, the two families finally met. During their trip, they explored Shanghai’s famous places of interest, including a boat trip along the Bund, and a joyful day at Shanghai Disneyland, and tried local snacks in Yu Garden. Their baby daughters even exchanged snacks during the visit.
“We finally got to meet our global family in person, and it was everything we expected. We are super excited and ready for the adventure and journey,” Neumann said. “It’s something that is hard to explain unless you are just there.” Neumann later posted.

①Have you ever wondered why some friendships are as close as family? It turns out that genes (基因) might secretly help you choose your closest friends!
② According to a study, friends have a kinship coefficient (亲缘系数) that is 0.0014 higher than that of strangers! This tiny number is like finding two students in a big school wearing the same shoes! The kinship coefficient is an easy way to see how genetically related (遗传相关的) two people are— the higher the number, the closer the relation.
③Take this number seriously. The kinship coefficient between parents and children is about 0.25. For first cousins, it’s about 0.0625, while for fourth cousins, it’s around 0.001. This means you might share more genes with your best friend than with some distant family members.
④ However, the question is— why do people with a high level of the kinship coefficient more probably become friends? The research team found that many of the top one percent of similar genes are related to the sense of smell. This means that close friends may have a similar sense of smell.
⑤ A study in Science Advances also showed that people who become close friends usually have similar body smells. Researchers collected sweat samples (汗液样本) from 200 pairs of friends. They all became close in a short time. Using an e-nose and human volunteers to study the smells, they found that friends’ body smells were more similar than those of strangers. So, next time you hug your friends, you might notice that they smell a bit like you!
( )11. What can the kinship coefficient show?
A. Whether two people are friends.
B. How much two friends have in common.
C. How close the genetic relation between two people is.
D. How long it takes two strangers to become friends.
( )12. What does the underlined word “distant” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Far. B. Close. C. Polite. D. Kind.
( )13. Why does the writer mention the study in Science Advances in Paragraph 5?
A. To say friends often share the same hobbies.
B. To show smells help make friends.
C. To explain why hugs help friends closer.
D. To discuss how an e-nose works.
( )14. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
( )15. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. Why Friends Smell Similar
B. The Meaning of Choosing Friends
C. How Your Nose Guides You to Friends
D. Genes and Smells: The Hidden Keys to Friendship

Be kind and show interest in others by asking questions about their hobbies or opinions. Remember, everyone feels shy at first, so don’t be afraid to take the first step.
