Dear Chris,
Thanks for your letter. Our Heritage Workshop is a course for students who love
traditional Chinese crafts. It begins at 3:30 every Thursday aftemoon in the art room
upstairs.
Our teacher shows us two crafts this term:we make small boats out of birch bark, and
we cut paper animals for the Spring Festival. The boat is the hardest part, because
the bark breaks easily,so I failed twice at first.
I have learned that old crafts need patience as much as skill.I hope you can join us
one day.
Yours,
Li Hua

Two Words Before a Crowd
On the last day of the summer holiday,my mother signed me up for the volunteer guide
programme at the city museum.I had never spoken to a stranger before, but the museum
needed more student guides for the school visits in September, and my mother said it
would be good for me.Before that morning I had already been to the museum three
times, and all three times had been school trips.
In the training course I learned a lot of facts. The oldest bowl in the museum is four
hundred years old.The big bronze bell was used to call the farmers to work in the
morning.
Then came the real test.On my first morning as a guide,a group of forty primary
school students walked in behind their teacher.I opened my mouth and nothing came
out.The first minute felt like an hour."Good morning,"I finally said."I am your
guide today. My name is Lin Qiao."Somebody at the back said,"Too quiet!"and
laughed.I took a deep breath and started again,a little louder."This bell is two
hundred years old..."The children came closer.By the end of the first ten minutes
they were pushing their hands up to ask questions, and I enjoyed watching their faces
An old guide,Mr.Guo,watched me from the corner of the hall.Later he said,"You
know what you said, but I could hear that you were speaking to each one of them. That
is the difference between reading to people and talking to people."After that
morning I changed my way of talking.Instead of telling the children what an object
was,I asked them what they had seen at home. The old wooden boat?A boy said his
grandfather had one like it.The bronze bell?A girl said her village had a bell that
rang at New Year.Suddenly the museum was full of their own memories.
Now I have been a guide for three weeks, and I have learned two things:a guide must
know the facts, but she must also find the story inside them.
24.Why did Lin Qiao's mother sign her up for the programme?
A.Because every student was asked to join.
B.Because she wanted her daughter to earn money
C.Because Lin Qiao was going to be a teacher.
D.Because the museum needed more student guides
25.How long had Lin Qiao been a guide when the story ended?
A.Three weeks.B.Two months.C.Half a year.D.One year.
26.How many times had Lin Qiao been to the museum before that morning?
A.Once.B.Twice.C.Three times.D.Never
27.Which title suits the story best?
A.A Summer Holiday in the City.B.Two Words Before a Crowd.
C.A Guide's Busy Week.D.A Museum Full of Children.
(C)
Exercise and Study:What the Numbers Say
Ask a group of students how much exercise they get and many of them will say"not
enough.A survey of 1,200 middle school students in our city found that only 38%of
them exercise for 30 minutes or more, three times a week.Another question asked how
often the students exercised;most of them answered,"Twice a week at most".Girls
were less active than boys, and students who spent more than two hours a day on
homework exercised least of all.
The students who had already joined a sports club moved more often than those who had
not tried one yet.Few of them had ever walked the whole way to school, and some had
just started to try it.
A second survey asked the same students about their school results.Students who
exercised regularly did better in mathematics and English, but the difference was not
huge. What surprised the researchers most was not the marks but the mood:students who
exercised said they slept better and felt less worried before tests.
Exercise does not have to be expensive or difficult. In fact, the most popular
activities among the students were the cheapest ones:walking to school, taking the
stairs instead of the lift, and playing basketball at break."I used to think I had
no time,"said a girl in Class Two.Now I walk home with my friends instead of
taking the bus.It takes ten minutes longer, but I sleep much better."
28.What does the survey of 1,200 students show?
A.Most students exercise three times a week.
B.Students who do more homework also exercise more.C.Girls exercise more than boys.
D.Only 38%of them exercise for 30 minutes or more,three times a week.
29.What surprised the researchers most?
A.That students who exercised slept better and felt less worried.
B.That their mathematics marks were much higher.
C.That the busiest students exercised the most.
D.That girls changed their habits faster than boys.
30.Which activities are the most popular among the students?
A.Buying a membership in a gym.B.Cycling long distances at weekends.
C.Walking to school, taking the stairs and playing basketball.
D.Swimming in a city swimming pool.
31.What does the girl in Class Two mainly want to show?
A.That exercise needs a lot of money.
B.That a small change in daily life can help people
C.That walking home in the evening is dangerous.
D.That she is the fittest student in her class.
(D)
Why We Count the Rubbish in Our School
Every autumn, the students of our school count the rubbish in the school bins.It
takes two lessons, one afternoon and a great many plastic bags.At first some students
thought it was silly:"We can see the rubbish. Why do we need to count it?"Two
hours later the answer was clear. The bin near the canteen held eighty-three plastic
bottles, and the bin in the reading room held eleven. The students of Class Seven had
counted carefully, and their numbers were almost the same as the numbers of Class
Nine. When the results were put up on the wall in the school hall, nobody called the
survey silly any more.
Then the head teacher did something the students had not expected.Neither the head
teacher nor the students had ever counted how many bottles we used, and yet the school
bought 200 reusable bottles and 400 cloth bags. The bins in the canteen were moved to
the school gate,so students just had to drop their rubbish before they went in.The
number of bottles in the bins fell by half in one week.
The survey did not end there. Now each class has its own rubbish corner, and a group
of students checks it every Friday."Counting rubbish is not the point,"one girl
said."It makes you look at what you throw away."Some people say that small actions
cannot change a big problem. That may be true of big problems.A school is small, and
a school can change.
32.Why did some students think the survey was silly at first?
A.Because they had to count rubbish for a whole afternoon.
B.Because the bins were too dirty to open.
C.Because the survey took away two lessons.
D.Because they could already see how much rubbish there was.
33.What happened after the results were put up on the wall?
A.The school bought reusable bottles and cloth bags and moved the bins.
B.The students decided to clean the bins every Friday.
C.The school closed the canteen for a week.D.Class Nine won the game.
34.What does the girl in the last paragraph mean?
A.Rubbish should be hidden from the students.
B.Counting rubbish is the real aim of the survey.
C.The point of counting is to notice what we throw away.
D.Students should count the bins instead of the rubbish.
35.What is the writer's attitude towards the survey?
A.It is only useful for primary school students.
B.It can change a small place, even if it cannot change the world.
C.It is a waste of time and money.
D.It should be done by teachers instead of students.
四、补全短文(本题共5小题,每小题1分,计5分)
短文中有五处空白,请从方框里A一G七个句子中选出五句分别填入,使短文意思连贯。
Being a museum guide sounds easy:stand in a room and talk about old things. In fact,
it takes practice. Here are five tips that may help you.
1.36
The best guide is not the one who knows every date and every name.If you can tell the
story behind an object-who made it,what it was used for,why people still remember
it-people will keep listening to you.
2.37
Visitors are not only a source of questions;they are also a source of knowledge. Many
of them have seen old farm tools in their own homes, and they are glad to tell you
about their favourite objects.
3.38
You will be asked to guide a group of thirty students. If you arrive ten minutes
early, you can find the room, check the objects and know where the fire exit is.
4.39
In your first week your heart will beat fast. That is normal.Slow speech gives you
time to think, and a steady voice makes people trust you.
5.40
Keep a small notebook in your pocket.Every question you cannot answer is a lesson for
the next day,and a year later you will have a notebook full of useful things.
A.Ask people about their favourite objects.
B.Speak slowly and keep your voice steady.
C.Arrive early and check the museum rules.
D.Learn the story behind each object.
E.Write down what people ask you.
F.Wear the most beautiful clothes you own.
G.Invite all your friends to watch you work.

六、阅读表达(本题共5小题,每小题2分,计10分)
读下面这篇短文,按各题要求作答,注意拼写和标点。
Every year our school asks the students of Grade 8 to count the rubbish in the school
bins.Last October our class did the job for three afternoons. We worked in pairs:one
student opened the bin and counted, the other wrote the numbers down on a form.On the
first afternoon we counted 63 plastic bottles near the canteen. On the second
afternoon, after the school had put the two new bins near the school gate,we counted
only 29.The same week, the school gave every student of our class a cloth bag,and
the number of bottles in the bins fell again.
Our teacher asked us to write one sentence about the survey. We wrote:"We did not
expect that a bin and a bag could change so much."Now we check the rubbish corner of
our classroom every Friday after school, and we tell the new students how many bottles
we found last time.
51.How many plastic bottles did they count near the canteen on the first afternoon?
52.How did the students work in the survey?

【参考范文】
Dear Chris,
Thanks for your letter. Our Heritage Workshop is a course for students who love
traditional Chinese crafts. It begins at 3:30 every Thursday afternoon in the art room
upstairs.
Our teacher shows us two crafts this term: we make small boats out of birch bark, and
we cut paper animals for the Spring Festival. The boat is the hardest part, because
the bark breaks easily, so I failed twice at first.
I have learned that old crafts need patience as much as skill. I hope you can join us
one day.
Yours,
Li Hua

Last July my father took me back to the small village in the north where his

Two weeks later, on a windy afternoon, we put the boat in the river. It __20__ towards

Two Words Before a Crowd
On the last day of the summer holiday, my mother signed me up for the volunteer guide
programme at the city museum. I had never spoken to a stranger before, but the museum
needed more student guides for the school visits in September, and my mother said it
would be good for me. Before that morning I had already been to the museum three
times, and all three times had been school trips.
In the training course I learned a lot of facts. The oldest bowl in the museum is four
hundred years old. The big bronze bell was used to call the farmers to work in the
morning.
Then came the real test. On my first morning as a guide, a group of forty primary
school students walked in behind their teacher. I opened my mouth and nothing came
out. The first minute felt like an hour. “Good morning,” I finally said. “I am your
guide today. My name is Lin Qiao.” Somebody at the back said, “Too quiet!” and
laughed. I took a deep breath and started again, a little louder. “This bell is two
hundred years old...” The children came closer. By the end of the first ten minutes
they were pushing their hands up to ask questions, and I enjoyed watching their faces.
An old guide, Mr. Guo, watched me from the corner of the hall. Later he said, “You
know what you said, but I could hear that you were speaking to each one of them. That
is the difference between reading to people and talking to people.” After that
morning I changed my way of talking. Instead of telling the children what an object
was, I asked them what they had seen at home. The old wooden boat? A boy said his
grandfather had one like it. The bronze bell? A girl said her village had a bell that
rang at New Year. Suddenly the museum was full of their own memories.
Now I have been a guide for three weeks, and I have learned two things: a guide must
know the facts, but she must also find the story inside them.
24. Why did Lin Qiao’s mother sign her up for the programme?
A. Because every student was asked to join.
B. Because she wanted her daughter to earn money.
C. Because Lin Qiao was going to be a teacher.
D. Because the museum needed more student guides.
25. How long had Lin Qiao been a guide when the story ended?
A. Three weeks. B. Two months. C. Half a year. D. One year.
26. How many times had Lin Qiao been to the museum before that morning?
A. Once. B. Twice. C. Three times. D. Never.
27. Which title suits the story best?
A. A Summer Holiday in the City. B. Two Words Before a Crowd.
C. A Guide’s Busy Week. D. A Museum Full of Children.
(C)
Exercise and Study: What the Numbers Say
Ask a group of students how much exercise they get and many of them will say “not
enough”. A survey of 1,200 middle school students in our city found that only 38% of
them exercise for 30 minutes or more, three times a week. Another question asked how
often the students exercised; most of them answered, “Twice a week at most”. Girls
were less active than boys, and students who spent more than two hours a day on
homework exercised least of all.
The students who had already joined a sports club moved more often than those who had
not tried one yet. Few of them had ever walked the whole way to school, and some had
just started to try it.
A second survey asked the same students about their school results. Students who
exercised regularly did better in mathematics and English, but the difference was not
huge. What surprised the researchers most was not the marks but the mood: students who
exercised said they slept better and felt less worried before tests.
Exercise does not have to be expensive or difficult. In fact, the most popular
activities among the students were the cheapest ones: walking to school, taking the
stairs instead of the lift, and playing basketball at break. “I used to think I had
no time,” said a girl in Class Two. “Now I walk home with my friends instead of
taking the bus. It takes ten minutes longer, but I sleep much better.”
28. What does the survey of 1,200 students show?
A. Most students exercise three times a week.
B. Students who do more homework also exercise more. C. Girls exercise more than boys.
D. Only 38% of them exercise for 30 minutes or more, three times a week.
29. What surprised the researchers most?
A. That students who exercised slept better and felt less worried.
B. That their mathematics marks were much higher.
C. That the busiest students exercised the most.
D. That girls changed their habits faster than boys.
30. Which activities are the most popular among the students?
A. Buying a membership in a gym. B. Cycling long distances at weekends.
C. Walking to school, taking the stairs and playing basketball.
D. Swimming in a city swimming pool.
31. What does the girl in Class Two mainly want to show?
A. That exercise needs a lot of money.
B. That a small change in daily life can help people.
C. That walking home in the evening is dangerous.
D. That she is the fittest student in her class.
(D)
Why We Count the Rubbish in Our School
Every autumn, the students of our school count the rubbish in the school bins. It
takes two lessons, one afternoon and a great many plastic bags. At first some students
thought it was silly: “We can see the rubbish. Why do we need to count it?” Two
hours later the answer was clear.
Then the head teacher did something the students had not expected. Neither the head
teacher nor the students had ever counted how many bottles we used, and yet the school
bought 200 reusable bottles and 400 cloth bags. The bins in the canteen were moved to
the school gate, so students just had to drop their rubbish before they went in. The
number of bottles in the bins fell by half in one week.
The survey did not end there. Now each class has its own rubbish corner, and a group
of students checks it every Friday. “Counting rubbish is not the point,” one girl
said. “It makes you look at what you throw away.” Some people say that small actions
cannot change a big problem. That may be true of big problems. A school is small, and
a school can change.
32. Why did some students think the survey was silly at first?
A. Because they had to count rubbish for a whole afternoon.
B. Because the bins were too dirty to open.
C. Because the survey took away two lessons.
D. Because they could already see how much rubbish there was.
33. What happened after the results were put up on the wall?
A. The school bought reusable bottles and cloth bags and moved the bins.
B. The students decided to clean the bins every Friday.
C. The school closed the canteen for a week. D. Class Nine won the game.
34. What does the girl in the last paragraph mean?
A. Rubbish should be hidden from the students.
B. Counting rubbish is the real aim of the survey.
C. The point of counting is to notice what we throw away.
D. Students should count the bins instead of the rubbish.
35. What is the writer’s attitude towards the survey?
A. It is only useful for primary school students.
B. It can change a small place, even if it cannot change the world.
C. It is a waste of time and money.
D. It should be done by teachers instead of students.
四、补全短文(本题共5小题,每小题1分,计5分)
短文中有五处空白,请从方框里A—G七个句子中选出五句分别填入,使短文意思连贯。
Being a museum guide sounds easy: stand in a room and talk about old things. In fact,
it takes practice. Here are five tips that may help you.
1. __36__
The best guide is not the one who knows every date and every name. If you can tell the
story behind an object — who made it, what it was used for, why people still remember
it — people will keep listening to you.
2. __37__
Visitors are not only a source of questions; they are also a source of knowledge. Many
of them have seen old farm tools in their own homes, and they are glad to tell you
about their favourite objects.
3. __38__
You will be asked to guide a group of thirty students. If you arrive ten minutes
early, you can find the room, check the objects and know where the fire exit is.
4. __39__
In your first week your heart will beat fast. That is normal. Slow speech gives you
time to think, and a steady voice makes people trust you.
5. __40__
Keep a small notebook in your pocket. Every question you cannot answer is a lesson for
the next day, and a year later you will have a notebook full of useful things.
A. Ask people about their favourite objects.
B. Speak slowly and keep your voice steady.
C. Arrive early and check the museum rules.
D. Learn the story behind each object.
E. Write down what people ask you.
F. Wear the most beautiful clothes you own.
G. Invite all your friends to watch you work.
五、语法填空(本题共10小题,每小题2分,计20分)
阅读下面的短文,在空白处填入适当的内容:括号内给出提示词的,用其正确形式填空;未给出提示词的,填入一个适当的词。
Members do not have to pay for the books, __41__ the club buys them with the money
from the school book fund. The club __42__ (meet) in the library reading room every
Friday afternoon since March. It began with only four students, but it now has more
than thirty members, and it has already held six book-sharing evenings so far.
The Friday meeting is __43__ (popular) than the Monday one, because more students can
come after class. The club is lucky enough __44__ (have) a small room of its own next
to the library. Our teacher likes to ask a funny question at the end of every meeting:
“How many books __45__ (have you read) this term?” Some students hold up ten fingers.
The reading room upstairs is so small __46__ we have to meet in two groups. The art
room is too small to hold all the members, so we asked the school for one more room.
In our school, this is the __47__ (busy) reading club of the term. Both the members
and the teachers enjoy the Friday afternoon.
Next term the club plans __48__ (invite) a writer to come and talk with us, and
several members want to give a talk too. The members who __49__ (be) in the club since
March have read more than thirty books together. Members can choose __50__ a short
comment card or a two-minute talk, but not both.
六、阅读表达(本题共5小题,每小题2分,计10分)
读下面这篇短文,按各题要求作答,注意拼写和标点。
Every year our school asks the students of Grade 8 to count the rubbish in the school
bins. Last October our class did the job for three afternoons. We worked in pairs: one
student opened the bin and counted, the other wrote the numbers down on a form. On the
first afternoon we counted 63 plastic bottles near the canteen. On the second
afternoon, after the school had put the two new bins near the school gate, we counted
only 29. The same week, the school gave every student of our class a cloth bag, and
the number of bottles in the bins fell again.
Our teacher asked us to write one sentence about the survey. We wrote: “We did not
expect that a bin and a bag could change so much.” Now we check the rubbish corner of
our classroom every Friday after school, and we tell the new students how many bottles
we found last time.
51. How many plastic bottles did they count near the canteen on the first afternoon?
52. How did the students work in the survey?
53. What happened to the number of bottles in the second afternoon?
54. What did the school give every student of their class, and why?
55. What can we learn from the students’ survey?
