Have you heard of “aha moments” in animals? A famous set of experiments helped scientists better understand insight, the sudden flash of understanding. They were done by psychologist Wolfgang Köhler, who studied chimpanzees nearly a hundred years ago.
In one experiment, a tasty banana hung high from the cage ceiling, far out of the reach of a clever chimpanzee named Sultan. Inside the cage lay several empty wooden boxes. At first, Sultan jumped again and again, trying to grab the fruit. When jumping failed, he gave up the useless tries. He walked around, looked at the boxes, and stayed quiet for some time, as if deep in thought.
Then came his aha moment. All at once, he started to stack the boxes one upon another. He climbed onto the box tower and successfully got the banana. What surprised Köhler most was that Sultan did not get the answer through repeated random tries. The solution appeared suddenly after a period of thinking.
Köhler called this insight learning. It is different from trial-and-error learning. In trial-and-error, you slowly find answers by trying one way after another, Insight, however, happens when your brain connects different pieces of information in a sudden moment. This is not only seen in smart animals. Human students also experience it, after long-time thinking you suddenly “get” a difficult math problem or grammar rule. Such aha moments bring great joy and improve your learning results.
29. What is Sultan in the passage?
A. A psychologist. B. A chimpanzee. C. A small banana. D. A wooden box.
30. What surprised Köhler most in the experiment?
A. Sultan loved eating bananas very much.
B. Sultan jumped high enough to reach the fruit.
C. Sultan found the solution all of a sudden instead of random tries.
D. Sultan spent lots of time playing with the boxes.
31. What is the difference between insight learning and trial-and-error learning?
A. Insight learning brings the answer suddenly; trial-and-error works little by little.
B. Insight learning is only for animals while trial-and-error is only for humans.
C. Trial-and-error needs thinking but insight does not.
D. Trial-and-error always brings joy but insight does not.
32. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. How Köhler kept chimpanzees in cages for experiments.
B. A famous experiment showing what insight learning is.
C. Ways for students to get better at math and grammar.
D. Why chimpanzees are the cleverest animals in the world.

In a small apartment building in New York, two young painters, Johnsy and Sue, lived and worked together. In a cold winter, a serious disease spread in the neighborhood. Unluckily, Johnsy caught the illness. She lay in bed all day, weak and hopeless.
Instead of receiving treatment actively, Johnsy made a strange decision. She watched an old ivy vine (常春藤) outside her window. There were only a few leaves left on the vine after the cold wind. She told Sue that she would die when the last leaf fell.
Sue was worried about her friend. She tried her best to cheer Johnsy up and asked the doctor for help. But Johnsy refused to listen. Her health got worse day by day, and she kept staring at the ivy vine, waiting for the last leaf to drop.
An old painter called Behrman lived on the ground floor. He was over sixty years old. He had never finished a great painting in his life, though he always talked about creating a masterpiece. When Behrman knew Johnsy’s strange idea, he felt sorry for the poor girl.
A terrible storm came on a cold rainy night. The wind and rain beat heavily against the windows. Everyone thought the last ivy leaf would surely fall. However, when Johnsy woke up the next morning, she was surprised to find the last leaf was still firmly on the vine. It stayed there bravely, fighting against the storm.
Day after day, the leaf never fell. Johnsy slowly regained hope and courage. She realized how silly she had been and started to cooperate with the doctor. Finally, she got well completely.
And that afternoon Sue came and said, “Mr. Behrman died of the serious cold today in the hospital. He was ill only two days. People found him in his room, helpless with pain. His shoes and clothing were wet through and icy cold. They couldn’t imagine where he had been on such a terrible night. And then they found a lantern, a ladder, some brushes and-look out the window, dear, at the last ivy leaf on the wall. Didn’t you wonder why it never fell when the wind blew? Ah, darling, it’s Behrman’s masterpiece-he painted it there the night that the last leaf fell.”
Adapted from O. Henry’s short story The Last Leaf

Bag charms (包挂) come into fashion, becoming new “emotional currency” for Chinese youth.
Young people in China are showing off their style with fun bag charms. These small decorations hang from backpacks and swing as people walk. They help young people show who they are and create a new way of emotional connection.
There are all kinds of these bag charms. Some are soft, plush toys, while others get ideas from traditional Chinese culture or museum pieces. For example, Xi’an’s Momo Dolls and Sanxingdui’s Bronze Mask series reimagine traditional elements (元素) into new forms. These China-chic designs turn bag charms into cultural bridges between the past and present.
These charms offer more than just a decorative touch; they play a key role in breaking the ice among strangers. A shared charm can help people connect with just a smile. As the Chinese New Year came near, Vicky, who lives in Nanjing, bought clothes not just for her family, but for her charms. “I match charms to my mood and clothes,” she explains. “Sometimes they feel like emotional codes, shared understanding brings quick connections at once.”
The charms have become popular because of the new and better ways of making them in places like Guangdong. Dongguan, known as the “designer toy capital”, has thousands of factories using smart technology to create new designs quickly. Today, these charms are reshaping the international image of “Made in China” by telling stories based on local creativity. These small items are building emotional ties with customers around the world and showing special Eastern beauty.
A Grade 10 student from Nanjing shared her thoughts. “Every time I see the same charm on a stranger’s backpack, it feels like discovering a tiny bridge linking two unknown hearts.” Dr Zhang, a teacher from Guangdong University of Finance & Economics, also put forward his view. “If fashionable small goods rush into teenagers’ daily life endlessly, will the nice glow of such lovely accessories (配饰) finally change into meaningless desire?”
37. Why were Xi’an’s Momo Dolls bag charms created?
A. To build lots of cultural bridges inside museums.
B. To copy ancient artworks and sell expensive museum gifts.
C. To help factories increase prices of ordinary plush toys.
D. To turn traditional culture into fashionable goods.
38. What does the underlined phrase “emotional codes” mean?
A. Secret passwords written on charms.
B. Something helping people understand each other quickly.
C. Special clothes made only for bag charms.
D. New rules for celebrating Chinese New Year.
39. What can we infer from Dr Zhang’s words in the last paragraph?
A. The popularity of bag charms may bring a hidden problem.
B. Teenagers must stop buying bag charms right now.
C. Lovely accessories will never lose their beauty.
D. All fashionable small goods are meaningless desire.
40. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Dongguan’s toy factories are famous for smart technology.
B. China-chic bag charms are sold all over the world.
C. Bag charms are popular for their cultural and emotional value, with some worries.
D. Young people in Nanjing like to share the same bag charms with strangers.

五、阅读填空(共20小题:每小题1分,满分20分)

请认真阅读下面短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中第1—9小题的空格里填一个最恰当的单词;在10小题的空格里填入适当的答案。
How do your classmates stay calm during exams? Why can they work out group work problems quickly or solve fights with friends? The secret isn’t being “born smart”—they ask themselves simple questions like, “What should I do next?” or “Is there a better way?” This skill is called “metacognition”. If you never use metacognition, you are in danger of wasting a lot of time on small problems.
Understanding metacognition
Metacognition means “thinking about how you think”. Imagine it as a map for your brain — it helps you see your learning path clearly. Scientist John Flavell said, “It’s like knowing what you know and what you don’t know.” People who use metacognition well break a big task into small ones (plan), find mistakes quickly (check), try new ways if something doesn’t work (repair) and use what worked before in new situations (learn). In this way, people can work out problems faster with less trouble and effort.
Real-life examples of metacognition
Preparing for exams. Tom breaks his study into two parts—30 minutes for notes and 10 minutes for his problems. Later, he asks, “Can I explain this to my classmates?” If not, he marks difficult parts or watches short videos to help himself learn faster.
Working in a group. Lisa divides tasks into “research” and “writing” and then sets weekly Friday meetings. When a member is absent, she calmly gives the tasks to others and uses the group chat to share their work. In this way, the project can be finished on time successfully.
Managing moods. When a friend suddenly changes the outing plan, Mike stops for a moment, takes a deep breath and asks himself, “Am I angry because of this?” He then sends WeChat messages to his friend, “Can we meet another day?” This calm way of dealing with his awful feelings is a better choice. He used to be so painful when little things went wrong, but now he stays calm.
Practising metacognition
When you’re working, ask yourself questions like, “What should I do now?”, “Is this helpful?” or “Is there a better way?” Write down good ideas in a notebook, or try to explain them out. If you can’t explain them clearly, go back and review the parts you don’t understand. When you’re trapped, think: “How will someone else solve this?” Maybe they will research first, break the task into small ones or ask for others’ help. Try to do what they do!
Why it matters
Metacognition turns “not understanding” into “clear understanding”. In the face of math problems or daily challenges, paying attention to how you think helps you do better. Remember: The best learners don’t just work hard, but also use metacognition to work smarter.

【答案】参考范文
My role model is a street calligrapher I meet near the community park. He is warm and optimistic, always wearing a big smile even on cold days.
Years ago, a serious accident left him unable to move his right hand, which he used to paint and write for a living. Instead of sinking into despair, he practiced writing with his left hand thousands of times every day, even when his arm ached badly. Now his strong, elegant characters always draw crowds of passers-by.
I learn that difficulties are never unbeatable. When I face study stress or frustration, I will keep trying instead of giving up easily.
