School is a great place where we can get to know ourselves more clearly.
Leo hated his name. Every time the teacher called “Leo” in class, he would sink lower in his chair, as if he wanted to disappear from the world. He thought his name sounded ____1____ and old-fashioned, like something from a black-and-white movie. His classmates had cool names like “Alex” or “Mia.” Leo ____2____ his name made him different in a bad way.
One day, the school asked everyone to bring a family ____3____ for a history project. Leo dug out an old framed item showing a serious-looking man whose eyes reminded Leo of his grandfather. “That’s your great-grandfather Leo,” his grandfather said. Then he told Leo the story: “Your great-grandfather was the first person in our town to build a library. He worked as a carpenter during the day and ____4____ second-hand books at night. Although others said it was impossible, he never ____5____! ‘Every child,’ he said, ‘should have books to read.’”
Leo was ____6____ when he realized how little he knew about the man in the frame. Suddenly, his name was no longer a heavy stone. It became a lantern-carrying a story of ____7____ and hope.
The next week, the class had to give a short talk about “What makes you you.” Leo stood in front of the class. He no longer sank in his chair. “My name is Leo,” he said ____8____. It means being someone who helps others learn. My great-grandfather built a library. One day, I want to build something too, maybe a reading club.
After class, a classmate said, “Leo, that’s really cool.” For the first time, Leo ____9____ when his name was called again.
Leo learned that self-acceptance does not come from changing who you are, but from discovering the meaning behind what you already have. Everyone has a story. Sometimes you need to listen and then decide to carry it ____10____.

At the 2025 Spring Festival Gala, 16 robots wowed hundreds of millions of viewers. Wang Xingxing, their “boss” and the founder of Unitree Robotics, became an overnight star.
Wang didn’t use to be a “star” student. He had trouble with English and often failed English tests. Yet, he loved building small machines and creating new things. When he studied robotics in college, his talent finally found its voice. Today, the man who couldn’t shine in English has made the world amazed at Chinese robotics.
Wang’s story proves that the Bucket Theory is not always the case. According to the theory, the amount of water a bucket can hold depends on its shortest board. Similarly, the weakest part of people often decides his overall performance. That’s why it is generally believed the key to success lies in improving one’s weakness instead of developing his strongest points. However, Wang focused his strengths on robotics, kept trying and created new possibilities.
In fact, everyone has their own advantages. But how can you discover them? Let’s start by thinking about what you enjoy and what comes naturally to you. For example, if you love drawing, try joining an art club or taking a design course. Also, try new activities, and you might uncover some hidden talents. Maybe you’ve never tried programming before, but after a workshop, probably you will realize you have a gift for it. Finally, never stop learning; it opens doors to new interests and skills.
19. What was difficult for Wang as a student?
A. Working out difficult problems. B. Studying robotics at university.

When my sister Louisa and I attended Mr. Hawkins’ school, we had to walk through thick woods every day. There was no proper road, so our father marked trees with cuts to guide us. For most of the winter, we followed the trees safely, but one morning, everything changed.
That morning, a heavy snow began to fall. Mother stood at the door, saying worriedly, “John, the snow’s getting heavy. The children should stay home today.”
Dad shook his head. “A little snow never hurt anybody. When I was their age, I walked through worse. They’ll be just fine.” We left happily, but as we walked farther, the snow covered the marked trees, and we gradually (逐渐地) lost our way.
We decided to head north to follow a young man’s footprints. However, the snow kept falling harder, and the footprints became unclear. Louisa held my arm so hard. “Oliver, what if we never find the way?” Her voice was shaking. I tried to look brave. “I’ll get us out of here. Just stay close to me.” Inside, though, my heart was beating fast. Then a thought hit us: what if these weren’t a man’s footprints at all? What if they belonged to a bear? We couldn’t help crying, realizing we were truly lost.
But we knew a little about the woods—not much, but maybe enough. We calmed down and kept following the footprints. Finally, we walked into a clearing and saw a small house. We ran over and knocked. To our surprise, it was our neighbor Aunt Polly who opened the door.
When she heard our story, she laughed, “So you two brave ones were following my old cow, Bessie! She’s smarter than she looks and brought you right to my door.” Aunt Polly took us in, warmed us up by the fire, and sent us home safely. It was a terrible but unforgettable day for Louisa and me.

Mystery. The word excites our curiosity. Mystery novels sell thousands of copies each year. Agatha Christie, the Queen of Mystery, is the bestselling novelist of all time. She wrote 66 detective novels and many short-story collections. Her works have sold over 2 billion copies and have been translated into more than 100 languages.
Agatha was born on September 15, 1890, in Torquay, England. As she was growing up in the quiet town, her mother often told her stories. Agatha loved these stories that transported her into a world of fantasy. Her mother also encouraged her to write from a young age.
At 16, Christie went to a school in Paris to study piano and singing. She spent hours practising and learned to play the piano very well, but she never made music a career because of stage fright (怯场).
At 22, she fell in love with Archie Christie. They got married in 1914 at the beginning of World War I. Archie fought as a soldier, and Christie worked as a nurse and later in a hospital drugstore. This experience gave her knowledge of poisons (毒药), which she later used in many of her mystery plots. In 1920, her first novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles introduced the brilliant Belgian detective Hercule Poirot. Though the book was refused by several publishers, it was finally published later the same year.

Christie also traveled widely and often visited the Middle East. Christie used her travels as an inspiration (灵感) for several books, including Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile.

【答案】例文
Dear editor,
I’m writing to tell you about the mental health survey among students of Sunshine Middle School.
As the chart shows, there are three main sources of mental stress. Social anxiety makes up the largest part, which is 43.2%. Schoolwork pressure takes up 36.1%, and parent-child relationship accounts for 20.7%.
I’d like to talk about schoolwork pressure. As Grade 9 students, we have too much homework and exams. Besides, the expectations from our parents also make us stressed out.
To solve this problem, here are some suggestions. First, we should make a proper plan to manage our time. Second, it’s necessary to communicate with our parents and teachers. Lastly, doing sports or listening to music is a good way to relax. I hope these suggestions can help students in need.
Yours,
Li Hua
