“Don’t you like it, Danny?” our teacher Mr. Smith asked with kindness. Danny stood up and said, “It’s too much money for me. My dad is ill in bed. My mom works in a supermarket every day. I will not ask them for money.”
“I’m very proud of you that you can understand your parents. Not every student of your age can think about this,” Mr Smith replied.
Then Mr. Smith asked us to come up with some good ideas to raise money for the trip by ourselves. We all thought it was really meaningful, and it would be a different and valuable learning experience for everyone.

Recently, there has been good news for families with young children in China. The government has introduced a new childcare subsidy (补贴) policy to ease the financial burden (经济负担) of raising kids.
To apply (申请), parents or guardians (监护人) have two choices: using the online childcare subsidy information system, which is very convenient, or applying in person. When applying, they need to prepare simple materials like the child’s birth certificate and household registration booklet (户口簿). The subsidy will be paid directly into the bank account (账户) of the applicant or the child making sure it reaches families safely.
This policy is really helpful. Starting from January 1, 2025, families with children under 3 years old can receive a subsidy. The national basic standard is 3,600 yuan per child every year, and it will be given until the child turns 3. Whether it’s the first, second or third child, each is eligible (合格的). For example, if a family has a 2-year-old child, they can get 3600 yuan this year. For children born before 2025 but still under 3, the subsidy will be calculated based on the remaining months until they turn 3. Children cost a lot from milk powder and diapers to early education. The subsidy can support families with these expenses. It shows the government cares about families and wants to help them raise the next generation. With this support, parents can focus more on their children’s growth, feeling less worried about money.
We hope this policy brings more joy and less stress to families, helping every child in China have a better future.

If you have ever had to struggle through a lesson after spending half the night on homework, fighting to keep your eyes open, you are not alone. A recent survey of teenagers shows that over 60% get less than eight hours’ sleep on school nights, and nearly 15% sleep fewer than six hours.
What makes sleep so important is that, while you are asleep, your brain is still quietly at work: it sorts through what you have learned during the day and stores it in lasting memory. In one study, students with eight hours’ sleep did much better in a memory test than those who stayed up all night to review. Getting enough sleep also helps you stay focused in class, think faster and keep a good mood. Students who sleep poorly often feel tired or angry more easily, and some even fall asleep at their desks.
If heavy schoolwork is one reason so many teenagers go to bed late, the habits formed around bedtime are very often another. It has become common to lie in bed with a phone, moving from one short video to the next message long after the lights are off. The blue light from screens tells the brain that it is still daytime, so it is harder to fall asleep. Tea, coffee and cola, drunk late in the day, can leave the mind too awake to rest even around midnight.
The encouraging part is that a few small changes are often enough. Doctors have some simple advice. Try to go to bed and get up at about the same time every day, even on weekends. Keep your phone out of the bedroom, or do something relaxing before sleep, such as reading a paper book. When homework truly cannot be completed, an honest talk with the teacher is wiser than staying up late to get it done. A brain that has rested well simply learns faster; sleep, looked at in the right way, is not time lost but time quietly put to work.
42.What percentage of students in the survey get less than six hours’ sleep?
A.15 %. B.About 60 %. C.Over 80 %. D.Nearly 100 %.
43.What does the brain do while we are sleeping?
A.It rests completely at night.
B.It organizes learning into memory.
C.It gives off special blue light.
D.It keeps the tired mind wide awake.
44.A student who stays up late going over a lesson again and again may _______.
A.remember it for a longer time
B.develop a stronger memory slowly
C.remember less than a rested student
D.become more focused in the morning
45.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Why does Sleep Matter So Much?

When I was very young, people in our village lived by planting fruit trees. My grandmother always took me to the orchard (果园) on the hill. At that time, they had to carry water from the river at the foot of the hill to halfway up the hill (半山腰). Even though they worked so hard, the production of fruit was still low because it was short of water there.
One day, two young men led a group of workers to our village. They learned about our difficulties, and later, a canal project (灌溉工程) began to be built in my village. “Who are they?” I asked. “They are good men from our government,” Grandma replied.
Then, I moved to a city for my middle school. During one summer holiday, I came back to my hometown with my parents. When we arrived there, we were astonished because everything changed. We saw the canal run through every orchard. And my grandma told us that after the canal project was completed, villagers didn’t have to go up and down the hill to carry water anymore. And more and more people started planting fruit and the production increased a lot.

Earth Day is celebrated every year on April 22. It is a special day to think about the Earth and learn about its problems. 50 Here are some ways you and your community can help.
Start with small things.
51 For example, you can drink from reusable water bottles rather than use plastic ones. Don’t forget to recycle paper and cans, doing your part to reduce waste at home.
Plant native (本地的) plants.
Planting local trees and flowers helps animals and makes your garden or neighborhood look nice. 52 This is another way to reduce pollution because you can eat the food you grow and reduce pollution from trucks bringing food from far away.
53
Think of ways to help the Earth and share your ideas with others. You could ask your school to organize a neighborhood cleanup, inspiring friends and family to help as well.
Join events.
On Earth Day, people across the world will come together at special events, such as a march, a beach cleanup, or a nature walk. 54
By sharing and working together, you can create a better world for everyone.
A.Call on more people.

Sometimes the greatest things are invented by mistake. The greatest mistake of all time could be those delicious snacks in your corner drugstore.
One day, a woman was making chocolate cookies. When she ran out of chocolate powder (粉), she took out a chocolate bar and broke it into little pieces. She added the pieces to her cookie dough (面团) and baked (烘烤) it. She thought that the chocolate would melt (融化) in the oven and make chocolate cookies. Far from melting, the pieces of chocolate stayed hard. When she took them out of the oven, she had chocolate chip cookies.
Another accidental invention was made by Frank Epperson, an eleven‑year‑old boy. In 1905, Frank sat outside on a winter evening, mixing up a big jug (罐) of powdered soda pop. Frank accidentally left the jug out during the night. When he went outside the next morning, he found the mixture in the jug frozen (冻僵) with the mixing stick stuck in the middle. Frank pulled out the frozen pop and tasted it. It was delicious! Frank started selling Epperson Icicles for 5 cents each. He later changed the name to Popsicles.
So, the next time you drop your hamburger into your ice‑cream or your cooked potatoes into your chicken soup, don’t worry! Some of the most delicious foods in the world were invented that way!

One day, we were told that we would have a school trip at the end of the month. The whole class got very excited and the girls began to discuss what to wear and what to bring with them. But Danny simply told everyone he wouldn’t go.
That day, we knew Danny more than before, because he was not only honest but also brave. He won the respect of all of us.

37.What is the main purpose of China’s new childcare subsidy policy?
A.To encourage more families to travel.
B.To reduce the financial pressure of raising children.
C.To improve children’s education level.
D.To help families buy new houses.
