“An answer sheet, please. ” As I raised my hand, all the heads in the hall turned towards me. They were surprised to see a grey-haired, confident-looking grandmother in her sixties, taking a Sanskrit exam.
I spent over twenty years teaching. My husband had a job that required us to move a lot, so we lived in several cities. Finally, I had to give up my job when my mother-in-law developed dementia (痴呆) and needed care. But my exploration of knowledge never stopped.
For a long time, I was interested in Sanskrit, the mother of Indian languages. I learned that there was a village called Mattur in Karnataka, India, and the whole village speaks Sanskrit. Later, I had the chance to visit this village and experience the joy of hearing the locals speak Sanskrit. There, I also met a group of students who were working to protect this ancient language so that it might regain (重新获得) its historical importance. I was deeply encouraged by this. When I returned home, I immediately signed up for an introductory Sanskrit course. I started preparing for my first formal exam in over 42 years.
At first, it was a challenge for me to remember the words and sentences, but I overcame (克服) it with careful planning and practice. I did well on the exam. My friends asked if I was on edge while taking the exam. I told them when I sat there in the examination hall, it did not feel like pressure or fear. It felt like a return to my teaching days. In the end, I completed all four exams in one go and achieved excellent results in each of them.
After more than forty years away from exams, I realized something simple: the ability to learn never leaves us. If you have a strong will and great passion (热爱), age is just a number.
4. Why did the author leave her teaching job?
A. To look after her family. B. To move to another city.
C. To get prepared for a test. D. To live a peaceful life.
5. What can be inferred about the author’s visit to Mattur?
A. It was a planned study trip. B. It got her to learn Sanskrit.
C. It drove her to protect Sanskrit. D. It reminded her of her teaching.
6. What do the underlined words “on edge” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Excited and joyful. B. Nervous and worried.
C. Red-faced and regretful. D. Confident and well-prepared.
7. What does the author’s experience show?

We are now well into the digital age, and in recent years, many companies have developed modern retro (怀旧的) technology, including MP3 players. MP3 players were popular during the late 1990s and early 2000s, as people used them to play music.
Back then, the Internet was not yet as dependable as it is today and people had to have a cell phone for communication, an MP3 player to store and play music, a computer for work, and more. However, the smartphone changed all that as it became the all-in-one device that a person needs. Because of the smartphone, companies developed apps for different purposes, with music streaming forever changed by the Swedish company, Spotify, which introduced the app in 2008. Thanks to Spotify, users no longer need to copy their favorite songs into their MP3 players or iPods.
Even though music streaming apps are becoming more and more popular, there are companies in the industry that believe technology like MP3 players is necessary. One such company is Sony. The technology company is developing a new MP3 player model, known as the Digital Audio Player (DAP). Companies like FiiO are also developing their modern MP3 players. These MP3 players all have Wi-Fi connectivity, Bluetooth, and more. They also have large storage capacities (存储容量) and allow users to add microSD cards if they need more space.
Because of these companies, retro fans can continue to enjoy the experiences MP3 players bring, which they share with the rest of the world. The community is growing, and many people share the same dissatisfaction with music streaming popularized by Spotify and the like. Some argue that music streaming is losing its way because of a large number of podcasts and audiobooks, while some simply want to go back to the “good old days” when they picked up their MP3 players, listened to music, and shut out the world.
8. What made MP3 players go out of fashion?
A. The rise of smartphones. B. The growth of the Internet.
C. The popularity of iPods. D. The drop in CD sales.
9. What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A. Sony leads the way in producing MP3 players.
B. DAP enjoys great popularity all over the world.
C. Sony still produces MP3 players for elderly users.
D. Modern MP3 players come with advanced technology.
10. Why do some retro fans go after MP3 players?
A. They have a special love for old objects.
B. They like high sound quality.
C. They want a focused music experience.
D. They prefer a cheaper device.
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. The influence of technology on music. B. The changes in music listening habits.
C. The comeback of MP3 players. D. The popularity of music streaming apps.
【答案】8. A 9. D 10. C 11. C

Because of the smartphone, companies developed apps for different purposes, with music streaming forever changed by the Swedish company, Spotify, which introduced the app in 2008. Thanks to Spotify, users no longer need to copy their favorite songs into their MP3 players or iPods.

通读全文,尤其是根据最后一段“Because of these companies, retro fans can continue to enjoy the experiences MP3 players bring, which they share with the rest of the world. (MP3播放器的回归)”能概括全文。
D
“Someone told me it’s all happening at the zoo” was the opening line of the song “At the Zoo”. In fact, a great deal is happening in the zoo world these days. American zoos draw over 180 million people a year. Zoos today no longer just display animals; they focus on raising our awareness of our planet’s biodiversity (生物多样性). At the same time, they aim to offer human visitors a fun and exciting experience.
Zoos are not new creations. For centuries, zoos have attracted people by displaying animals. They are exciting and safe places to watch wildlife, creating lasting memories and interesting stories about amazing animals from faraway lands.
Lately, however, some people are saying that zoos are bad for wild animals. To respond to such concerns, zoos are working to improve their design to support animals' well-being. For starters, many zoos are redesigning their physical layouts (实体布局). They are leaving behind traditional zoo-design ideas, such as cages and animal houses, by creating larger and more naturalistic forests and rivers where animals can live freely. Instead of forcing wildlife into the human environment, they’re inviting humans into the animals’ world.
Another response is that zoos are focusing on helping, not just displaying, animals. For example, the Zoological Society of London is leading efforts to find and treat diseases that harm animals both in zoos and in the wild. Also, the zoo in Phoenix started an even more unusual rescue (营救). Scientists there began a reproducing program for the Arabian Oryx, a kind of antelope (羚羊) that had died out in the wild. It was a huge success.
These wildlife protection moves are some of the most amazing examples of the changes remaking 21st-century zoos. What hasn’t changed, however, is our interest in wild animals. Today’s zoos, with their eyes on the future, are working hard to help, support, and respect our planet’s amazing wildlife. Famous biologist Jane Goodall said that the best place for animals was in their natural home. But she added that zoos, if designed well, could help protect the lives of wild animals.
12. What is the focus of today's zoos?
A. Finding zoos’ real business value. B. Providing safe environments for visitors.
C. Protecting animals in danger of dying out. D. Keeping a balance between education and fun.
13. How can people improve the design of zoos?
A. By reducing the number of visitors. B. By separating animals from visitors.
C. By creating naturalistic environments. D. By making animals’ houses comfortable.
14. Why does the author mention the Zoological Society of London and the zoo in Phoenix?
A. To introduce the recent changes in zoos. B. To show zoos’ efforts in protecting animals.
C. To question traditional zoo display methods. D. To compare different zoo management styles.
15. What did Jane Goodall think of well-designed zoos?
A. They caught visitors’ attention. B. They were good for animals.
C. They often made improvements. D. They cost a lot.
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. B 15. B
