拓展提高(课内同源 + 课外同源)
课内同源:被一种语言分开的两个国家
A famous writer once joked that Britain and America are two nations divided by a common language. The joke works because it is almost true — and the almost is worth an essay. / The differences live in three drawers. Vocabulary: the British live in flats, ride lifts, take the underground and eat biscuits; Americans live in apartments, ride elevators, take the subway and eat cookies. Spelling: Webster's dictionary of 1828 trimmed English to its bones for a young democracy — colour became color, centre became center, and the silent letters were sent packing. Grammar is a smaller drawer: the British happily use collective plurals — the team are winning — where Americans prefer the team is. / How did one language drift apart? Distance, mainly, plus time. For a century after independence, ships took six weeks each way, and a dictionary was the fastest bridge available. Radio, cinema, television and now the internet have run the traffic the other way, and the drift has slowed to a crawl: each side understands the other's films at full speed. / The lesson in the culture text is calming for learners. There is no correct English to choose between — there are two great dialects of one language, each with its own literature, jokes and accents. Pick a standard for spelling, keep it consistent through your essay, and stay curious about the other. A student who can laugh at both chips and crisps has understood the unit better than any exam can measure.

Passage2(课外同源:英语里的中文)
Open any English dictionary and you will find China hiding in plain sight — not in the grammar, but in the borrowings that ships and silk roads carried home. / The oldest arrivals came by sea. Tea itself sailed out of the Min-nan port of Amoy, which is why English says tea; the northern word cha travelled the land routes and became chai across Persia, Russia and India. Ketchup, one of the most American of sauces, began as a fish brine from southern China, and the word drifted through Malay before landing in English cookbooks. / Trade brought hardware. Sampan, a small boat; typhoon, the great storm — a word so ancient that it may have met English halfway, from Cantonese taai fung and Chinese sailors' Greek and Arabic cousins. The polite bow of the head became kowtow, borrowed so exactly that English speakers still use it for excessive obedience. / The twentieth century added philosophy and food: yin and yang, feng shui, kung fu, tofu, and the friendly greeting long time no see, which linguists suspect was calqued from Chinese phrasing by sailors and traders who missed home grammar. / Borrowing is how living languages gossip. English took typhoon and ketchup; Chinese, for its part, took shafa (sofa), qiaokeli (chocolate) and Moli (Monet). A word that crosses an ocean, the lexicographers say, proves that two peoples once sat at the same table. Every borrowing in the dictionary is a receipt from a very old friendship.
任务一:单项选择
1.Where did the English word tea come from?
A.The Min-nan pronunciation te, spread by sea trade. B.The Persian word chai. C.An English farmer. D.The word tay in French.
2.What does the writer say a borrowed word proves?
A.That two peoples once sat at the same table. B.That one language is stronger. C.That dictionaries are old. D.That trade is over.

任务四范文:Languages are the friendliest thieves in the world, and English and Chinese have been borrowing from each other for centuries. English took tea from the ports of southern China, where the local word te sailed abroad with the crop; the same ships probably carried ketchup, which began life as a fish sauce. For example, typhoon and kowtow also crossed the ocean, one from the storms of the Guangdong coast and one from the old court etiquette. The traffic runs both ways: modern Chinese says shafa for sofa, qiaokeli for chocolate, and Moli for the painter Monet, each word a small boat from another shore. New words still spread around the world at the speed of the internet, and today's English speakers order tofu and practise kung fu without a second thought. Every borrowed word is a receipt for a meeting between two peoples. A dictionary, read this way, is not a rulebook at all — it is a photo album of old friendships.
