She had won her first surf competition at eight, and everybody said she had salt water in her blood. / Then something pulled her arm from below. A tiger shark, over four metres long, had attacked her in one sudden bite. Her best friend's father pulled her onto another board and pressed his T-shirt against the wound, and they raced to the beach. She lost almost two-thirds of the blood in her body. / She woke up in hospital to find her left arm gone below the shoulder. Most people would call that the end of a surfing life. Bethany called it a problem to be solved. / Within a month she was back in the water, learning to balance on a longer board and to paddle with one arm. Ten weeks after the attack she entered a competition again; in 2005 she won a national surfing title. / Her story became a book and later a film called Soul Surfer. Interviewers always ask the same question: were you afraid to go back? Her answer never changes. She says that the fear did come back with her into the water, but that loving something more than you fear it is the whole secret of courage. 任务一:单项选择 1.What happened to Bethany on 31 October 2003? A.A tiger shark attacked her left arm. B.She won a national title. C.She saved a friend. D.She moved to Hawaii. 2.What is the name of the film about her? A.Soul Surfer. B.Blue Wave. C.Girl of the Sea. D.Blood and Water. 任务二:判断正误(T/F) 3.She lost almost two-thirds of the blood in her body after the attack. ( ) 4.Bethany never took part in a competition after the accident. ( ) 任务三:简答 5.According to Bethany, what is the secret of courage? _______________________________________________________________________________________________ Passage2(课外同源:看不见的洪水猛兽) Every summer, lifeguards save thousands of swimmers from a danger that has no teeth: the rip current. A rip current is a narrow river of water that runs from the beach back out to sea, and it can move faster than an Olympic swimmer. / Rips form when waves pile water onto the shore. The water must escape somehow, so it finds the deepest channel and rushes out. From above, a rip often looks like the calmest place to swim — flat, brown and without foam. That is why swimmers choose it, and that is exactly the mistake. / The science of surviving one is simple but goes against instinct. Do not swim against the current, because even strong adults cannot win that race. Stay calm, float, and raise one arm to call for help. Swim sideways, along the beach, until you leave the channel; then waves will help carry you back. / Beach signs tell the rest of the story. Swim between the red and yellow flags, where lifeguards can see you. Never swim at night, alone, or after a big storm. / A shark is feared by everybody, yet around the world it harms far fewer swimmers in a year than rip currents do in a week. The sea does not need to be frightening, only understood. 任务一:单项选择 1.Why do swimmers often choose to swim in a rip current? A.It often looks calm and flat from the shore. B.It is warmer. C.It has no waves at all. D.Lifeguards stand there. 2.What should you do if caught in a rip current? A.Swim sideways along the beach. B.Swim straight back to the beach. C.Dive to the bottom. D.Swim against it quickly. 任务二:判断正误(T/F) 3.A rip current can move faster than an Olympic swimmer. ( ) 4.Rip currents harm more swimmers each year than sharks do. ( ) 任务三:简答 5.Where should swimmers stay so that lifeguards can see them? _______________________________________________________________________________________________ 任务四:单元微写作 听力课后,老师请你用英语向同学介绍一件“勇敢者的故事”,不少于6句话。请写清发生了什么、主人公怎样面对,并用上 take part in 和 encourage。 _______________________________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________________________ 参考答案 夯实基础 一、单词汉译英 1.shark 2.attack 3.survive 4.surf 5.wave 6.arm 7.beach 8.rescue 9.hospital 10.brave 11.dangerous 12.recover 二、短语汉译英 1.go surfing 2.be attacked by 3.get away from 4.in hospital 5.wake up 6.take up again 7.take part in 8.encourage sb to do sth 三、词形变换 1.survival 2.injury 3.decision 4.recovery 5.protection 能力进阶 一、单句填空 1.was 2.began 3.attacked 4.returned 5.competes 二、根据汉语意思完成句子 1.was; attacked 2.went; back 3.take; part 4.encourages; give 5.took; up 三、句型转换 1.When; did 2.How; big 3.Did; lose 4.is; it 5.was; saved 四、选词填空 1.shark 2.surf 3.wave 4.beach 5.rescue 五、情景补全对话 答案:1.A 2.B 3.C 4.D 5.E;多余项:F 拓展提高 Passage1 任务一:1.A 2.A 任务二:3.T 4.F 任务三简答:5.Loving something more than you fear it. Two years ago she nearly drowned in a river, and for a long time she was afraid even to look at deep water. Last spring our teacher encouraged her to take part in the school swimming class again. At first she could only stand in the shallow end and watch the others. Then she practised floating, then kicking, and by the end of the term she swam twenty metres with a float. On the last day she swam the width of the pool without any help, and the whole class cheered for her. She taught us that being brave is not about having no fear, but about returning to the water when it frightens you. 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
