In Ben's class last week, a visitor from a museum gave a talk on polar explorers, and the students practised all of them. / The simplest phrase is “Pardon?” or “Sorry?”, said with rising intonation. It is short and polite, and it works everywhere. A fuller version is “Sorry, I didn't catch that. Could you say it again?” — useful when you want the speaker to know exactly what you missed. / When the problem is speed, not noise, the polite request is “Could you speak a little more slowly, please?” The visitor was happy to be asked; she said that speakers often forget how fast they talk. / There is one more skill: checking before you write. “Do you mean Endurance or Discovery?” is better than a guess, because one wrong name can send your notes in the wrong direction. / By the end of the talk, the visitor said it was the politest class she had ever met. Ben had asked her to repeat three times — politely. 任务一:单项选择 1.What is the simplest polite phrase to ask for repetition? A.“Pardon?” B.“What?” C.“Be quiet.” D.“Never mind.” 2.What should you do before you write down a name you are not sure of? A.Check it with the speaker. B.Copy your friend's notes. C.Leave it empty. D.Write it in Chinese. 任务二:判断正误(T/F) 3.Speakers are usually angry when you ask them to slow down. ( ) 4.Ben asked the visitor to repeat three times during the talk. ( ) 任务三:简答 5.What did the visitor say about the class? _______________________________________________________________________________________________ Passage2(课外同源:最伟大的失败) In 1914, Ernest Shackleton set off to cross Antarctica on foot. He never touched the continent's land. His expedition became famous for a different reason: every single man came home. / Eighty kilometres from land, the pack ice closed around his ship, Endurance, like a slow hand. For ten months the men camped on the ice while the ship was crushed. When the ice melted, they rowed three lifeboats to a bare rock called Elephant Island. / No ship ever went there. So Shackleton chose five men and sailed one of the boats, the James Caird, across eight hundred miles of the stormiest ocean on earth. Sixteen days later they reached South Georgia — but on the wrong side, and three of them walked over unmapped mountains to find the whaling station. / It took four attempts before a rescue ship reached Elephant Island. On the third rescue attempt in August 1916, Shackleton stood on the shore counting his men. Twenty-two were waiting. “All safe, all safe,” he told them, and every one of them was. / Shackleton never achieved his original goal. He is remembered anyway, because he brought back everything he set out with: his crew. 任务一:单项选择 1.Why did Shackleton sail the James Caird across eight hundred miles of ocean? A.To find help for his crew. B.To explore the mountains. C.To race Amundsen. D.To reach the pole. 2.How many men were waiting on Elephant Island? A.Twenty-two. B.Five. C.Sixteen. D.Eighty. 任务二:判断正误(T/F) 3.Endurance was crushed by the pack ice. ( ) 4.A rescue ship reached Elephant Island on the first attempt. ( ) 任务三:简答 5.What is Shackleton remembered for, according to the passage? _______________________________________________________________________________________________ 任务四:单元微写作 口语课上要介绍“我的榜样”。请写一段话,不少于6句话。请写清榜样是谁、做过什么、你学到什么,并用上 admire 和 learn from。 _______________________________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________________________ 参考答案 夯实基础 一、单词汉译英 1.repeat 2.pardon 3.slowly 4.admire 5.role model 6.risk 7.difficulty 8.courage 9.determination 10.patient 11.curious 12.strong-minded 二、短语汉译英 1.say that again 2.could you say that again 3.speak more slowly 4.do you mean 5.take pride in 6.take risks 7.learn from 8.in my opinion 三、词形变换 1.repetition 2.admiration 3.exploration 4.survival 5.preparation 能力进阶 一、单句填空 1.spoke 2.Are 3.took 4.admire 5.have learned 二、根据汉语意思完成句子 1.Could; again 2.speak; more 3.Who; explorer 4.admire; courage 5.opinion; risks 三、句型转换 1.What; for 2.How; fast 3.Did; admire 4.was; it 5.is; remembered 四、选词填空 1.pardon 2.repeat 3.slowly 4.admire 5.role model 五、情景补全对话 答案:1.B 2.A 3.C 4.D 5.E;多余项:F 拓展提高 Passage1 任务一:1.A 2.A 任务二:3.F 4.T 任务三简答:5.That it was the politest class she had ever met. He competed when he was young, and a knee injury ended his career at nineteen. He did not give up sport; he learned to coach instead, and he has trained children for twenty years. What I admire is his patience: he has explained the same turn to me at least fifty times, without ever raising his voice. He often says that courage is not a big jump but a small push every day. From him I have learned to keep going when progress is slow, and to repeat the basics until they feel natural. A role model does not have to be famous. Mine teaches in a cold swimming pool every Tuesday evening. 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
