Three Types of Renewable Energy Sources
Water Power
Water power is the world’s biggest source of renewable energy by far, with China, Brazil, Canada, the U. S. , and Russia the leading water power producers. While water power is a clean energy source provided by rain and snow, it also has several drawbacks.
Large dams can damage river ecosystems and surrounding communities, harming wildlife and displacing residents. Even water power at full capacity bears its own emissions problems, as rotting organic material in reservoirs releases methane
Dams aren’t the only way to use water for power. Tidal and wave energy projects around the world aim to capture the ocean’s natural rhythms. The potential marine energy is great.
Wind Power
Wind turbines (涡轮) are growing around the globe, and China, the U. S., and Germany are the leading wind energy producers.
Some people may object to how wind turbines look on the horizon (地平线) and to how they sound, but wind energy, whose prices are declining, is proving too valuable a resource to deny. Another problem with wind turbines is that they’re a danger for birds and bats, killing hundreds of thousands annually that engineers are working on solutions to make them safer for flying wildlife.
Solar Power
From home rooftops to farms, solar power is reshaping energy markets around the world.
In addition to solar panels, which change the sun’s light to electricity, concentrating solar power (CSP) plants use mirrors to concentrate the sun’s heat, getting thermal energy. Solar thermal energy is also being used worldwide for hot water, heating, and cooling. China, Japan, and the U. S. are leading the solar transformation, but solar still has a long way to go.
1. Which country is the leading producer of all the three renewable energies?
A. China. B. Japan. C. Germany. D. Russia.
2. What may reduce the disadvantages of water power?
A. Gathering organic material in reservoirs.
B. Employing alternative water sources.
C. Moving residents away from dams
D. Using water power at full capacity.
3. What is a problem with the wind turbines?
A. They cost too much.
B. They occupy much space.
C. They cause noise pollution.
D. They affect flying wildlife’s health.

When Sousan Samadani finished watching a video about the rapid decline of the world’s soil, she sank into deep thought. Soil, which provides almost all the food we eat, was being damaged so quickly that scientists warned much of it could become useless in the future. At that moment, the 65-year-old retired woman who had worked in environmental protection made a decision: she would devote herself fully to protecting it as part of the Save Soil movement.
Soon, Samadani began a three-month journey across Europe, the Middle East and Asia to raise public awareness. Travelling mainly by bus and train, and sometimes even hitchhiking, she covered more than 27 countries. She stayed in cheap hotels or volunteers’ homes and often rushed straight from stations to campaign events. So busy was she that she sometimes went for days without a proper meal. Yet never did tiredness weaken her resolution.
She was motivated not just by concern for the environment, but also by a lifelong respect for the land. Although she grew up without ever seeing her father’s old farm, stories of wheat fields, fruit trees and animals filled her imagination. Later, after moving to the Netherlands, she rented a garden and grew vegetables herself. Working with the soil, she came to understand that it was not simply dirt under our feet, but the foundation of food, farming and human life.
To attract attention to the issue, Samadani did far more than give speeches. She cycled nearly 400 miles across southern India and wore her Save Soil T-shirt wherever she went. It was her courage and energy that turned the online video she watched into a worldwide mission.
Her greatest vision is to bring the campaign back to her hometown and one day create a garden like the one her parents once described. To Samadani, protecting soil means protecting the future and only when people recognize its value can real change begin.
4. How might Samadani feel after seeing the video about soil?
A. Relieved. B. Alarmed. C. Satisfied. D. Confused.
5. What does paragraph 2 mainly highlight?
A. The commitment Samadani demonstrated. B. The extensive reach of Samadani’s journey.
C. The substantial support Samadani received. D. The time pressure during Samadani’s journey.
6. What can we learn about Samadani from paragraph 3?
A. She developed farming skills to save soil efficiently.
B. She felt regretful for not managing her father’s farm.
C. Her gardening experience shaped her attitude to soil.
D. Her respect for land arose from academic education.
7. Which words can best describe Samadani?
A. Generous and practical. B. Humorous and devoted.
C. Independent and sensitive. D. Responsible and determined.
C
You’d be excused from thinking that life in a tropical forest is easy. A lazy arm movement is all that’s needed to secure the next mouthful of food. But it’s not like that at all. Life in the rainforest demands extraordinary adaptations. That’s why I found myself collecting the remnants (残留物) of the most recent meal of the endangered red-nosed cuxiu monkey for my recent study.
Cuxius are cat-sized animals, with canines bigger than human teeth, even though their skull is the size of an orange. Canines of the cuxiu are the real deal: designed for cracking open hard, unripe fruits to get at the equally unripe and hard seeds. Humans would need a hammer to crack open this kind of fruit. But cuxius and their near relations bite them open. Powered by massive muscles, the jaws can deliver a bite which, if scaled for size, is equal to that of a jaguar. They eat hundreds of rock-hard fruits a week, tens of thousands over their ten-year life span. So, I wanted to know: How do they avoid cracking their teeth along with the nuts?
Pick up a walnut (核桃) and you’ll notice a thin line running around the hard shell. This is the suture (缝线), and it’s where the shell would naturally break open to free the seed when it ripens. Fruits with sutures dominate the diet of the red-nosed cuxiu, so I wondered if this could be the key to the cuxiu’s success.
Measurements of the force needed for a copy of a cuxiu canine showed this was the case. It took up to 70% less force to go in at the suture than elsewhere on the fruits the cuxiu ate.
There’s the fact that every animal in the rainforest needs to be its own doctor, physiotherapist and fitness coach. Survival in the rainforest depends on alertness and clever survival strategies. An animal’s survival depends not only on knowing what to eat but how to eat it. Seconds count when a bite too many can mean missing the one key glance skywards that stops you from becoming someone else’s breakfast.
8. What can we know about the cuxius?
A. They can live for around ten years. B. They are equal to a jaguar in size.
C. They prefer eating soft and ripe fruits. D. They are similar to a cat in appearance.
9. What does the underlined phrase “the cuxiu’s success” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Finding enough walnuts to feed on. B. Understanding the function of fruit suture.
C. Consuming hard fruits without cracking teeth. D. Taking over the rainforest.
10. What can we infer about the rainforest animals?
A. They can serve as doctors to care for each other.
B. They have to stay highly alarmed during a meal.
C. They must value every second for food hunting.
D. They should eat smart for their health.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Cuxius: the Master of Eating Hard Fruits
B. A Study on the Endangered Cuxius
C. Living in the Rainforest: Easy or Hard?
D. How Animals in the Rainforest Avoid Tooth Damage
D
Sweeteners are widely used in products from yogurts to toothpaste. They claim to let people enjoy sweet tastes without gaining weight or suffering dental problems. However, a growing body of research is suggesting that these substances may bring unexpected consequences.
These sweeteners include artificial ones and plant-based substances, including a family of chemicals called sugar alcohols and stevia. Some are hundreds of times sweeter than sugar, so they are added, in tiny amounts to foods. Based on the observation that most are passed out of the body unchanged, scientists assumed they pass through without affecting metabolism
However, this thing might not be that simple. Short-term controlled studies have shown that replacing sugar with sweeteners does result in lower weight gain. But long-term observations have found the opposite: people who take more sweeteners tend to gain more weight than those who take the least. Other studies indicate that they also have higher rates of heart disease, high blood sugar and cancer than those who avoid them.
Proving cause and effect is difficult, as it would require considering many factors: people who use sweeteners may already be at higher risk for these diseases and are attempting to eat more healthily. Nevertheless, the overall evidence was concerning enough to cause the World Health Organization to issue an official warning in 2023, advising against using sweeteners for weight control or disease prevention. (This does not apply to people with high blood sugar.)
There are several possible explanations about how sweeteners might cause harm. Some have been found to start the same harmful processes in the stomach and digestive system as sugar. Studies on mice suggest they may affect the function of immune cells that help prevent cancers. New evidence also suggests they can upset the balance of stomach microbes, potentially allowing harmful types to grow. “There are many unanswered questions,” says Dr Herbert Tilg, “but these findings are increasing the level of concern.”
Avoiding these sweeteners is easier said than done, as food companies often combine several in one product to create a more natural taste. Regular buyers of packaged snacks or carbonated drinks will find them hard to avoid. The wise choice is to stay away from these products completely. And if you desire something sweet, choose a piece of your favourite fruit instead.
12. What did scientists assume about sweeteners based on early observations?
A. They affect the function of immune cells in mice.
B. They cause serious damage to the digestive system.
C. They result in lower weight gain over the long term.
D. They pass through the body without affecting health.
13. What do the long-term observations indicate compared with short-term studies?
A. Both short and long-term studies reach the same finding.
B. Short-term studies show loss, while long-term ones suggest gain.
C. Short-term studies are overall more reliable than long-term ones.
D. Long-term studies found higher disease rates than short-term ones.
14. Why is it difficult to prove that sweeteners cause health problems?
A. Sweeteners are in such tiny amounts they are hard to measure.
B. There are not enough long-term studies to support the findings.
C. People choosing sweeteners may already face health conditions.
D. Most sweeteners go through the body without leaving any trace.
15. What is the author’s attitude toward sweeteners?
A. Concerned. B. Tolerant. C. Optimistic. D. Indifferent.
Life is full of options, some unimportant, some significant. But sometimes it can be hard to make the proper choice. Many people ignore unseen barriers affecting their choices. ____16____
The first barrier: some of us just find it hard to make a choice. Alice Boyes, writing for Harvard Business Review, tells us this can be connected to seeking perfect results, where people attempt to find an ideal way to any problem and are unable to advance when they can’t find one. ____17____ However, as surprising as it may seem, this difficulty in deciding might actually help us make the correct ones.
____18____ Susan Krauss in Psychology Today reminds us that people often make bad decisions because they base them on fixed thoughts rather than the real situation. She highlights a paper by researcher Iris Schneider which finds that hesitant people are more likely to look at different viewpoints and use them to reach a nicer decision.
The third barrier comes from our own intelligence. David Robson, speaking to the BBC’s Crowd Science, tells us that intelligence can sometimes prevent people from making the right decision. People sometimes use their intelligence to create reasonable explanations for unreasonable ideas. ____19____ Jeff Bezos supports this view. Tech CEO Jason Fried recalls the Amazon founder saying that the people who were right most of the time were those who frequently changed their minds.
So, perhaps it is not hesitation but rather intelligence, combined with quick decision-making and fixed ideas, that actually prevents us from making good choices. ____20____ Being slow to decide, on the other hand, could help us select the best option.
A. Another barrier comes from people’s fixed thinking patterns.
B. So what exactly holds us back from making sound decisions?
C. Intelligent people are less likely to make ill-advised decisions.
D. He holds the view that modesty contributes to sound decisions.
E. Making quick judgments is generally considered a smarter way.
F. It appears that difficulty in choosing will stop us from wise decisions.
G. All these studies make us rethink the value of hesitation in decision-making.

Jade was born in China and relocated to America when she was barely a baby. Now a sixteen-year-old teenager raised entirely in the USA, she had grown accustomed to local lifestyles. Busy as they were, her parents never skipped the celebrations of traditional Chinese festivals. Still, Jade could never figure out what made these festivals so significant to them. To her, these festivals meant nothing but endless tiring chores, unfamiliar dishes that failed to suit her taste, and less time with her friends.
On the morning of the Mid-Autumn Festival, Jade’s mother got up very early and busied herself with preparations. Jade grabbed her backpack, eager to dash out and meet her friends. Just as she reached the door, Mom stopped her, hoping she could pitch in. Looking at all kinds of materials and the mooncake moulds spread out across the kitchen table, Jade rejected the appeal without hesitation. She complained that she had made plans with her friends long before and saw absolutely no sense in wasting her leisure time on such festival routines.
Mom dried her hands on her apron and drew Jade down to sit next to her. She didn’t blame her. Instead, she pulled an old photo album out of the kitchen cupboard. Inside were snapshots of her and Dad shortly after their arrival in America: the young couple beamed, holding mooncakes outside their tiny, shabby apartment.
In a soft, trembling voice, Mom explained that the festival represented far more than mooncakes and lights. Back in her childhood days in Guangzhou, her whole family would gather on the rooftop each Mid-Autumn night. They savored mooncakes, sipped fragrant tea and watched the huge, glowing full moon. Once, she had taken those warm moments for granted. But after being thousands of miles away from home, that very moon turned into an invisible thread tying her to her hometown. “We gaze up at the same moon as our relatives back in China. This festival holds our family bond unbroken,” she murmured.
Mom shut the photo album and gently laid her hand over Jade’s. “You are free to leave if you wish. Go enjoy yourself with your friends.” Jade stared hard at her mother, catching the faint glimmer of homesick sorrow in her eyes.

B 5. A 6. C 7. D

A 9. C 10. B 11. A

根据原文第二段“They eat hundreds of rock-hard fruits a week, tens of thousands over their ten-year life span. (它们一周要吃掉数百个像石头一样坚硬的果实,在十年的寿命中要吃掉上万个。)”可知,它们大约能活十年。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据原文第二段“So, I wanted to know: How do they avoid cracking their teeth along with the nuts? (所以,我想知道:它们是怎样在咬开坚果的同时,避免咬坏自己牙齿的?)”及第三段“Fruits with sutures dominate the diet of the red-nosed cuxiu, so I wondered if this could be the key to the cuxiu’s success. (带有果缝的果实是红鼻丛尾猴的主要食物,于是我猜想,这或许就是它们得以成功的关键。)”可知,“the cuxiu’s success”指的是它们食用坚硬果实却不咬坏牙齿这件事。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据原文最后一段“Seconds count when a bite too many can mean missing the one key glance skywards that stops you from becoming someone else’s breakfast. (分秒必争,多咬一口就意味着错过抬头观察天敌的关键一眼,而这一眼能让自己不成为别的动物的早餐。)”可知,雨林动物进食时必须时刻保持高度警惕。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据原文第二段“So, I wanted to know: How do they avoid cracking their teeth along with the nuts?(所以,我想知道:它们是怎样在咬开坚果的同时,避免咬坏自己牙齿的?)”
D 13. B 14. C 15. A

根据第二段“Based on the observation that most are passed out of the body unchanged, scientists assumed they pass through without affecting metabolism (新陈代谢).(根据大多数物质在体内未发生改变就排出体外的观察结果,科学家推测它们通过时不会影响新陈代谢)”可知,科学家早期认为甜味剂会原样排出体外,不会影响健康。
根据第三段“Short-term controlled studies have shown that replacing sugar with sweeteners does result in lower weight gain. But long-term observations have found the opposite: people who take more sweeteners tend to gain more weight than those who take the least.(短期受控研究表明,用甜味剂替代糖确实会导致体重增加减少。但长期观察发现情况恰恰相反:摄入甜味剂较多的人往往比摄入最少的人更容易发胖)”可知,短期研究显示增重更少;长期观察结果相反,体重更容易增加。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Proving cause and effect is difficult, as it would require considering many factors: people who use sweeteners may already be at higher risk for these diseases and are attempting to eat more healthily.(证明因果关系很困难,因为这需要考虑诸多因素:使用甜味剂的人可能本身已面临更高的患病风险,而他们正试图吃得更健康)”可知,很难证明因果,因为选择甜味剂的人群本身患病风险可能本来就更高。
根据最后一段“The wise choice is to stay away from these products completely. And if you desire something sweet, choose a piece of your favourite fruit instead.(明智的选择是完全远离这些产品。如果你想要甜的东西,那就选择你最喜欢的水果来代替吧)”可知,作者对甜味剂感到担忧。
第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
B 17. F 18. A 19. D 20. G
根据上文“Life is full of options, some unimportant, some significant. But sometimes it can be hard to make the proper choice. Many people ignore unseen barriers affecting their choices.(人生充满各种选择,有些微不足道,有些却意义重大。但有时做出正确抉择并不容易。许多人忽视了影响他们选择的无形障碍)”可知,前文提到很多人忽视影响选择的无形障碍,后文开始具体介绍第一个障碍,B项“那么究竟是什么阻碍我们做出正确的决定呢?”承上启下,符合语境。
【17题详解】
根据上文“The first barrier: some of us just find it hard to make a choice. Alice Boyes, writing for Harvard Business Review, tells us this can be connected to seeking perfect results, where people attempt to find an ideal way to any problem and are unable to advance when they can’t find one.(第一个障碍:有些人只是难以做出选择。
根据后文“Susan Krauss in Psychology Today reminds us that people often make bad decisions because they base them on fixed thoughts rather than the real situation. She highlights a paper by researcher Iris Schneider which finds that hesitant people are more likely to look at different viewpoints and use them to reach a nicer decision.(《今日心理学》的苏珊·克劳斯提醒我们,人们常常做出错误决策,因为他们依据固定的想法而非实际情况来做选择。她强调了研究人员艾里斯·施耐德的一项研究论文,该论文指出犹豫不决的人更倾向于关注不同的观点,并利用这些观点做出更好的决定)”可知,空处位于段首,前文已经介绍了第一个障碍,本段后文提到人们做错误决定是因为基于固定思维而非实际情况,A项“另一个障碍来自人们的固定思维模式”引出本段的第二个障碍,符合逻辑。
【19题详解】
根据上文“The third barrier comes from our own intelligence. David Robson, speaking to the BBC’s Crowd Science, tells us that intelligence can sometimes prevent people from making the right decision. People sometimes use their intelligence to create reasonable explanations for unreasonable ideas.(第三个障碍来自我们自身的智慧。大卫·罗布森在接受BBC《大众科学》采访时告诉我们,有时智慧会阻碍人们做出正确的决定。人们有时会利用自己的智慧,为不合理的想法提供合理的解释)”以及后文“Jeff Bezos supports this view. Tech CEO Jason Fried recalls the Amazon founder saying that the people who were right most of the time were those who frequently changed their minds.(杰夫·贝佐斯支持这一观点。科技公司首席执行官杰森·弗里德回忆,这位亚马逊创始人曾说过,那些大多数时候都正确的人,往往是那些经常改变主意的人)”可知,前文提到高智商有时会阻碍人做正确决定,人们会用智商为不合理的想法找合理借口,后文提到贝佐斯支持该观点,还说正确的人是经常改变想法的人,D项“他认为谦逊有助于做出正确决定”中的指代和观点逻辑可衔接上下文。
【20题详解】
根据上文“So, perhaps it is not hesitation but rather intelligence, combined with quick decision-making and fixed ideas, that actually prevents us from making good choices.(所以,也许真正阻碍我们做出正确选择的并非犹豫,而是智力与快速决策、固执观念的结合)”以及后文“Being slow to decide, on the other hand, could help us select the best option.(另一方面,放慢决策有助于我们选择最佳方案)”可知,空处前文总结了阻碍好决策的因素是智商、快速决策和固化思维,后文说决策慢反而能帮我们选到最优选项,G项“所有这些研究让我们重新思考决策过程中犹豫的价值”可衔接总结前文,引出后文对犹豫正向作用的表述。

Set against the cultural background of China’s Chaoshan region in the 1940s and modern day, Dear You tells a close story of family, migration, love, and separation across ____36____ (generation).
Rather than relying ____37____ striking twists (转变) or sudden bursting conflict, the film quietly builds emotion through letters. In many ways, the letters serve as small emotional carriers intended ____38____ (keep) precious feelings from fading away into silence.
Unlike many Western love films that stress ____39____ (open) expressing love, Dear You reflects a more controlled emotional tradition often found in Chinese culture as love is rarely spoken directly. Back in the 1940s, local villagers ____40____ (bury) their inner feelings instead of voicing them publicly. Love is hidden in patience, ____41____ (responsible), sacrifice and quiet endurance. That is also ____42____ letters take up such a special place in Chinese storytelling.
____43____ (write) Chinese has long carried emotional weight beyond word-for-word meaning. A seemingly simple sentence can hold layers of regret, tenderness, longing, ____44____ restraint. In Dear You, handwritten letters become more than ____45____ story tool — they stand for a distinctly East Asian emotional aesthetic, where the quiet depth of oriental love is fully presented.

固定搭配be intended to do sth.

To stand out in the AI era, high school students should focus on skills that ChatGPT lacks, such as critical thinking and emotional intelligence.
First, AI relies on existing data, so cultivating critical thinking enables us to evaluate information independently and innovate rather than just accept answers passively. Second, unlike machines, humans possess genuine empathy. Developing emotional intelligence is vital for building trust and teamwork in complex social situations, which AI can hardly replace.
In short, by sharpening these irreplaceable human skills, we can thrive alongside AI rather than being replaced by it.

Jade thought for a short time, and then put down her backpack. Though slightly reluctant, she rolled up her sleeves and threw herself into festival preparations with her parents. Awkwardly, she was clumsy at first and the mooncakes made by her turned out misshapen and looked strange. Under Mom’s patient guidance, she gradually mastered the skills of pressing mixtures into delicate moulds. What started as a burdensome task slowly sparked her enthusiasm. Mindful of every step, she grew increasingly skillful and laughter occasionally echoed through the kitchen.
When night fell, all the preparations were completed. Seated on the balcony, the whole family admired the brilliant full moon, tasted the homemade mooncakes and swapped touching stories about Mid-Autumn in China. To Jade’s amazement, the mooncakes carried an unexpected delicious flavor. It dawned on her that those once-annoying chores were far from meaningless. Instead of merely robbing her of fun with friends, the festival built a precious emotional bond linking her to her family and distant cultural roots.
