When I came home on the first day of every school year, there was always a new book on my bed. My mother lived for tradition — especially on holidays. Knowing how much I loved to read, a new book was the perfect way to begin a new school year for me, and it was a reminder of how much she cared.
I carried my mother's thoughtfulness into my own children’s lives. When it was time for them to start school, we began our own traditions. For us, it was all about our favorite pizza at dinner and High/ Low, a game in which the kids shared their best and not-so-good memories of that first school day. They loved the game so much that they made me share mine.
The start of a new school year can be exciting or frightening for children, but creating a family tradition can help beat the first-day-of-school blues. Kristin Taylor wishes her parents had recorded her childhood more, so she’s promised to do that for her kids. “I want to remember the moments that seem little but end up being the stories we retell as our kids grow up,” says Taylor, mother to three children. Each year on the first school day, she photographs her children in their school uniforms. “I plan on giving them a book of those photos when they graduate,” she says.
The book The Kissing Hand has meant a lot to Marie Karns and her daughter, Lily. In the story, a baby raccoon (浣熊) cries to his mom that he doesn’t want to go to school. The mom passes down a tradition from her mom to her little boy. She kisses the inside of his palm (手心) so he can take her love to school with him. “We read the book every year and then I kissed the palm of her hand so she could take it to school with her,” says Karns.
Traditions create memories and one day, when the kids are older, they will be a great way to look back and remember those new beginnings.
4. What did the author’s children do on their first school day?
A. They went out to a restaurant to have dinner. B. They read a new book together.
C. They discussed how to start a new family tradition. D. They described their experiences that day in a game.
5. What can we learn about Kristin Taylor?
A. She values childhood memories. B. She works as a photographer.
C. She is strict with her children. D. She is good at telling stories.
6. Which one is NOT TRUE according to the passage?
A. The writer’s mother put a new book on her bed on the first day of every school year.
B. Kristin Taylor takes photos of her kids in school uniforms every first school day.
C. In The Kissing Hand, the mother raccoon kisses her kid’s forehead.
D. Family traditions can help children feel better on the first day of school.
7. What is the author’s attitude towards family traditions?
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Indifferent. D. Negative.

The decision to delay (延迟) morning arrival times in Nanjing has caused a wide discussion about how to balance students’ academic needs with their health. While some people support the change, others worry about its possible effects.
Supporters of the policy argue that sleep is very important for teenagers’ growth. They point out that students who do not get enough sleep often feel tired, worried, or unable to focus. In contrast, well-rested students are more likely to take an active part in class and perform better in exams. Some experts also note that a good breakfast plays an important role in students’ health and learning. With a later start time, students can have enough time to eat well and prepare for the day.
People who disagree with the policy, however, express concerns about the influence on academic performance. They argue that reducing morning study time might lead to lower grades, especially for students who need more practice or review. Some parents worry that students will become lazy if they do not have to get up early. They also question whether schools can really improve classroom efficiency enough to make up for the lost time.
To better study the effects of the new schedule, education departments in Nanjing plan to collect feedback from students, parents, and teachers over the next few months. They will record changes in students’ sleep quality, attendance rates (出勤率), and academic performance. If the results show that the policy is beneficial, it may be carried out in more schools. If problems arise, further changes may be made.
In the long run, experts suggest that improving students’ well-being requires the efforts of schools, families, and society. Schools should not only change schedules but also improve teaching quality. Parents should help their children develop good sleep habits and create a quiet environment at home. Students themselves should learn to manage their time wisely and avoid staying up late. Only in this way can the goal of reducing burden and improving quality be truly achieved.
8. What do supporters of the policy believe?
A. Students should get up as early as possible.
B. Sleep is not important for academic performance.
C. Well-rested students are more likely to perform better.
D. After-school services are more important than sleep.
9. How does the author develop the argument in the passage?
A. By listing historical events related to education.
B. By presenting both supporting and opposing views.
C. By describing personal experiences of students.
D. By comparing different countries’ school systems.
10. What can we learn from the passage?
A. The policy will be carried out in all schools in Nanjing.
B. Schools play a more important role than families in students’ well-being.
C. Students can make up for lost learning time by studying more efficiently.
D. The new schedule will probably be changed according to future results.
11. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Delayed school start times: A heated argument over it
B. Sleep problems: A hidden trouble among adolescents
C. School schedules: Effective ways to promote teenagers’ development
D. Joint Efforts: Solutions to teenagers’ academic needs
C 9. B 10. D 11. A

The Media Lab is looking for rule breakers who have taken a personal risk to help society.
Joi Ito directs the Media Lab at MIT. It suggests that history shows disobedience has served society. He says, “The American Civil Rights Movement wouldn’t have happened without civil disobedience. India would not have achieved independence without the disobedience of Gandhi and his followers. The Boston Tea Party (波士顿倾茶事件) , which we celebrate here in New England, was also quite disobedient.”
Media Lab says the award will not support acts of violence, terrorism (恐怖主义) or dangerous behaviour. Reid Hoffiman is a businessman and co-founder of the social network, LinkedIn. He is donating the $250,000 in prize money.
The nominating (提名) period will be open until May 1. Anybody may nominate an individual or a group for the award. Self-nomination is not allowed. Nominations will be accepted on the MIT Media Lab Rewarding Disobedience web page.

根据文章第一段中的“Most people would say they disapprove of breaking rules. But one highly respected university in America is offering a big prize for disobedience. (大多数人会说他们不赞成打破规则。但美国一所备受尊敬的大学却为‘disobedience’提供了一笔巨额奖金。)” 以及第二段中的“One condition, however, the disobedience must help society. (然而,有一个条件,这种 disobedience 必须有助于社会。)”可知,大多数人会不赞成打破规则,但是在美国的麻省理工对“打破规则的人”是提供巨额奖金的,前提是这种行为是为了帮助社会,划线词指的是打破常规、超越既定规范的行为,且这种行为是为了帮助社会。A选项“acting beyond norms(超越规范行事)”与划线词意思相近,符合题意。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第二段中的“One condition, however, the disobedience must help society. (然而,有一个条件,这种不服从必须有助于社会)以及“The Media Lab is looking for rule breakers who have taken a personal risk to help society. 【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段中Joi Ito的话“You don’t change the world by doing what you’re told. (仅仅听从指令是无法改变世界的。)” 以及第四段中“It suggests that history shows disobedience has served society. (这表明历史显示,不顺从曾为社会带来益处。)”以及“The American Civil Rights Movement wouldn't have happened without civil disobedience. India would not have achieved independence without the disobedience of Gandhi and his followers. The Boston Tea Party (波士顿倾茶事件) , which we celebrate here in New England, was also quite disobedient.( 如果没有公民不服从,美国民权运动就不会发生。如果没有甘地及其追随者的不服从,印度也不会实现独立。我们在此新英格兰地区所庆祝的波士顿倾茶事件,同样是一种非常强烈的不服从行为。)”可知,此处提到的民权运动、印度独立和波士顿倾茶事件等例子,是因为Joi Ito认为合理的不服从可以带来积极的社会变革,即产生好的结果。选项B “produce good results (产生好的结果)”符合文意。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“It suggests that history shows disobedience has served society. (这表明历史显示,不顺从曾为社会带来益处。)”以及“The American Civil Rights Movement wouldn't have happened without civil disobedience.

Most people would say they disapprove of breaking rules. But one highly respected university in America is offering a big prize for disobedience.
The Media Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge will award $250,000 to an individual or a group for breaking rules. One condition, however: the disobedience must help society. The MIT Media Lab is seeking nominations (推荐) for candidates (候选人) from all over the world. The best candidates are doing or have done difficult and important work that is not always recognized. The award is open to people in all fields, including science, politics, law, journalism, medicine and human rights. The Media Lab is looking for rule breakers who have taken a personal risk to help society.
Joi Ito directs the Media Lab at MIT. He says, “You don’t change the world by doing what you’ re told.” But, he says he is not suggesting people break laws or rules without reason. “Sometimes we have to go to first principles and consider whether the laws or rules are fair, and whether we should question them,” he says.
Media Lab will present the winner or winners with the prize at a ceremony on July 21st. A short list of candidates will be announced before the event in Massachusetts.
