At 102 years old, American doctor Howard Tucker holds a Guinness World Record as the oldest practicing doctor. Although he stopped seeing patients at 100, his life remains full of purpose, showing that passion (热情) is the best medicine against aging.
Dr. Tucker believes “retirement (退休) is the enemy of a long life.” He thinks having a reason to wake up each morning is important. Even after the hospital where he worked closed in 2022, he hasn’t completely ruled out returning to medical work. Today, he teaches future doctors and works on medico-legal cases, a job made possible by a law degree he earned at 67.
For Dr. Tucker, a long life isn’t just about good genes (基因) from his parents, who lived to 84 and 96, but more of his healthy lifestyle including following a simple diet, often missing lunch to have a clear head, exercising daily, walking at least four kilometers, and staying away from smoking while drinking a little alcohol. Dr. Tucker also says it’s important to keep the brain active. “If you retire from work, you should at least do something as a hobby,” he told Today. “You need something interesting for the brain daily.” Science backs him up. Research shows that ongoing learning, social connections, and a sense of purpose are all helpful for a healthy and long life.
Experiencing a fall in his late 80s that ended his skiing days with a broken neck, Tucker hasn’t lost his passion for life, always finding new ways to stay active instead. As he approaches his 103rd birthday, Dr. Tucker isn’t worried about death but focuses on living fully. For a man who has spent his life helping treat others, Dr. Howard Tucker’s greatest lesson is how to truly live.
4. How did Dr. Tucker fight against “the enemy of a long life”?
A. He earned a law degree at 67. B. He worked as a medical instructor.
C. He woke up early each morning. D. He returned to the hospital in 2022.
5. What plays a greater role in Dr. Tucker’s long life?
A. A healthy way of daily life. B. A clear and scientific mind.
C. As many hobbies as possible. D. Good genes from his family.
6. What happened to Dr. Tucker in his late 80s?
A. He needed a passion for life. B. He started to learn how to ski.
C. He retired from medical practice. D. He remained active after an accident.

When people think of skiing (滑雪), they usually imagine snowy mountains like the Alps or the Rockies. But in Copenhagen, Denmark, there’s a surprising place to ski — the top of a power station!
This special power station is called the Amager Resource Center. On top of the building is CopenHill, a man-made mountain with a nearly 1,500-foot ski slope (斜坡), four ski lifts, a hiking line, a restaurant, a kids’ area, and more. If those weren’t mind-boggling enough, adventurers could climb the side of the mountain through the world’s highest climbing wall, which is 278 feet tall.
“As a flat country, there are no hills or mountains in Denmark suitable for adventure sports like skiing. So we got the idea of building a man-made mountain,” said Bjarke Ingels, founder of BIG, the company behind the CopenHill project. To serve the purpose of a mountain, CopenHill has its slope covered with Neveplast, a green plastic that feels similar to snow. It takes about three runs to get used to skiing on it, and skiers are advised to wear long clothes and hard hats in case they fall.
Denmark is a world leader in clean energy. The power station is part of the system by turning non-recyclable (不可回收的) waste into energy, providing heat and electricity for tens of thousands of families. For the design of the project, Ingels turned a decades-old building into a new structure (建筑物) that could be mixed into the city. The result was something that could not only change about 450,000 tons of non-recyclable waste into energy every year, but also attract tourists and locals looking for skiing fun.
“A power station doesn’t have to be an ugly box that influences views or goes against its neighboring buildings. It can be the most popular park in the city,” said Ingels. After years of making, CopenHill finally opened in 2019. The design has been named one of the year’s 50 best inventions. This project is showing the world that clean tech presents almost endless possibilities.
8. What does the underlined word “mind-boggling” probably mean in paragraph 2?
A. Amazing. B. Strange. C. Costly. D. Common.
9. Why was the idea of CopenHill introduced?
A. To deal with plastic pollution. B. To make skiing safer for visitors.
C. To improve the nation’s transportation. D. To create mountain sports experiences.
10. What is special about the design of the project?
A. Taking practical advice from tourists. B. Valuing the use of traditional materials.
C. Bringing eco-friendliness and relaxation. D. Offering education on new energy technology.
11. What does Ingels stress about the power station in the last paragraph?
A. It has been built on great inventions. B. It forms an attractive part of the city.
C. It has received mixed opinions. D. It takes up little public space.
A 9. D 10. C 11. B

根据第二段中“On top of the building is CopenHill, a man-made mountain with a nearly 1,500-foot ski slope (斜坡), four ski lifts, a hiking line, a restaurant, a kids’ area, and more. If those weren’t mind-boggling enough, adventurers could climb the side of the mountain through the world’s highest climbing wall, which is 278 feet tall. 故选A项。
根据第三段中““As a flat country, there are no hills or mountains in Denmark suitable for adventure sports like skiing. So we got the idea of building a man-made mountain,” said Bjarke Ingels, founder of BIG, the company behind the CopenHill project. (“丹麦地势平坦,全国没有适合开展滑雪等冒险运动的丘陵山脉。因此我们萌生了建造人造山的想法,”CopenHill项目承建公司BIG的创始人比亚克·英格斯说道。)”可知,引入CopenHill的想法是为了创造山地运动体验,弥补丹麦自然地形不足的问题。故选D项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“For the design of the project, Ingels turned a decades-old building into a new structure (建筑物) that could be mixed into the city. The result was something that could not only change about 450,000 tons of non-recyclable waste into energy every year, but also attract tourists and locals looking for skiing fun. (在项目设计过程中,Ingels将一座已有数十年历史的老旧建筑改造成能与城市融为一体的新结构。最终建成的设施不仅每年能将约45万吨不可回收垃圾转化为能源,还吸引了众多寻求滑雪乐趣的游客和当地居民。)”可知,该项目的特别之处在于其设计结合了环保(将不可回收废物转化为能源)和休闲娱乐(提供滑雪等冒险运动场所)的功能。故选C项。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中Ingels所说的话“A power station doesn’t have to be an ugly box that influences views or goes against its neighboring buildings. It can be the most popular park in the city (发电站不一定是一个影响视野或与邻近建筑格格不入的丑陋盒子。它可以成为这个城市最受欢迎的公园)”可知,Ingels强调发电站并非仅仅是功能性的设施,也可以成为这个城市最受欢迎的公园,成为城市中具有吸引力的部分。故选B项。
D
Fishing is a way of life for people who live on the floating villages of Cambodia’s Tonle Sap Lake. These Southeast Asians depend on fish in the lake. But those fish are in trouble.
Generally, their numbers in Tonle Sap Lake have been falling sharply. Compared to the number in 2003, just 12 percent as many could be found in 2019. Chevalier was part of a team that shared those data in Science of the Total Environment. “If the tendency (趋势) continues,” he says, “there will be nothing for people there to eat any more.”
Dams (大坝) are a big problem, Chevalier says. These structures break up river systems. With growing human populations, overfishing becomes more of a threat. As people keep fishing, the share of fish left there could decrease even more. Pollution threatens freshwater ecosystems, too. People have also been changing the land in ways that damage the habitat in lakes and streams. And then there’s a growing number of non-native harmful species. Lastly, global warming has been causing harm by stressing both fish and their food sources.
Still, the situation isn’t hopeless. Researchers are working to identify the most effective ways to change that. One way is to remove outdated or ill-placed dams. The largest such U.S. project took down four dams from the lower Klamath River. Soon after, thousands of salmon (鲑鱼) were swimming upstream through this newly opened stretch. Elsewhere, dam operators can reduce harm by changing river flows. Limiting flow too much can cause downstream areas to dry up. Smarter dam placement would also help.
“Restoring habitat can help if done right. But this work costs money. And it’s hard to restore entire streams,” John Gray, a fish biologist, says. In 2022, scientists tried repopulating some fish species at Tonle Sap Lake. However, nearly half the fish were caught less than three months later.
With each success or failure, scientists learn how better to deal with these big problems. Teens can get involved. Many conservation groups welcome help from people of any age.
12. Why is fishing mentioned in the first paragraph?
A. To present a way of living. B. To lead to the main concern.
C. To state the best fishing place. D. To stress the value of tradition.
13. Which of the following is a way to settle the problem caused by dams?
A. Increasing the use of dams. B. Turning dams into river habitats.
C. Choosing the locations for dams wisely. D. Limiting the river water flowing downstream.
14. What does Gray think of restoring habitat?
A. It has limited benefits. B. It is of no use.
C. It will bring worse results. D. It is money-saving.
15. What is the best title of the text?
A. Benefits of Protecting Fish. B. Threats to Southeast Asia.
C. Remove Old Dams to Save Salmon. D. Help Tonle Sap Fish Survive.
B 13. C 14. A 15. D

Habits to be a highly effective student
Some students are able to get straight A’s and at the same time serve as the president of three clubs. However, some students struggle to keep their GPA (Grade-Point Average) above a 3.0. ___16___ Although it’s true that everyone’s IQ is different, good study habits are very important. Here’re several habits you should adopt to get good grades.
___17___ If you haven’t had a planner (规划薄), get one. Many people use their computers and smartphones to make a schedule. The problem with that approach is that they are major distractions. Instead, get an old-fashioned paper and pen planner.
Create a weekly schedule. ___18___ Include time that will be spent eating, sleeping and doing anything not related to school work. That way you know exactly how much you can accomplish each day.
Take frequent, short breaks. Taking a break from studying for 15 minutes every hour will help keep you refreshed. ___19___ If you don’t take a break, you may find yourself daydreaming or even falling asleep. Take some time for some water, a snack or a quick chat with a friend.
Take care of yourself. During final exam week, it is common for students to fall behind on sleep and meals. Make sure you get a good night’s sleep and have regular meals. Studying while hungry or sleepy is ineffective and will slow you down in the long run. Also try to make time for friends and family. ___20___
A. Keep things organized.
B. Keep away from your computers.
C. Of course, not everyone needs breaks.
D. Our brains are not meant to work for hours nonstop.
E. Having a good support system will help with all the stress.
F. And they seem to spend all of their time in studying.
G. Then under each day, make a list of things to do each hour.
F 17. A 18. G 19. D 20. E

空格处是本段主题句,由下文“If you haven’t had a planner (规划薄), get one. (如果你还没有规划薄,那就找一个。)”可知,在本段作者想要强调规划的重要性,A项“Keep things organized. (保持井井有条。)”也是在强调规划,因此概括本段内容,可作为主题句。故选A。
上文“Create a weekly schedule. (创建每周计划。)”是第二条建议,也就是创建一周的时间表。G项“Then under each day, make a list of things to do each hour. (然后在每一天下面,列出每小时要做的事情。)”承接上文,在周计划之下,列好一周中的每天每个小时要做的事情,也开启下文“Include time that will be spent eating, sleeping and doing anything not related to school work. (包括吃饭、睡觉和做任何与学习无关的事情的时间。)”具体细化到每个件事的时间安排。故选G。
【19题详解】
根据上文“Take frequent, short breaks. (经常进行短暂的休息。)”可知,本条建议是要经常休息。再根据下文“If you don’t take a break, you may find yourself daydreaming or even falling asleep. (如果你不休息,你可能会发现自己在做白日梦,甚至睡着了。)”可知,大脑是需要休息的,不能无休止地工作。D项“Our brains are not meant to work for hours nonstop. (我们的大脑不应该连续工作几个小时。)”说明大脑不能连续工作,符合上下文。故选D。
【20题详解】
由上文“Also try to make time for friends and family. (也试着为朋友和家人腾出时间。)”可知,作者建议要花时间跟家人在一起。E项“Having a good support system will help with all the stress. (有一个好的支持系统将有助于缓解所有的压力。)”正是解释了作者提出该条建议的原因,因为家人和朋友的支持能够帮助我们缓解压力,符合行文逻辑。故选E。

When I landed in a small town in New Zealand as an exchange student, I thought I was ready for everything — new faces, language barriers, strange social patterns and even homesickness. Still, the smallest things made me feel out of place.
Luckily, the Wilsons, my host family, did everything they could to help me settle in — driving me around, sharing meals, and even letting me use their kitchen when. I. missed Chinese food. With their warmth and support, everything seemed to fall into place.
But at school, small moments felt bigger than I’d imagined. In our first literature class, we discussed a Hemingway story. Everyone jumped in actively, while I struggled to speak up. My desk-mate encouraged me, “Next time, just speak up.” I nodded, forcing a bitter smile.
And just like that, I found myself in another cultural trap, Mrs. Wilson’s birthday dinner. At the table, I answered politely but kept mostly to myself. Mrs. Wilson noticed my silence and gently asked, “You alright, sweet girl? You’ re so quiet tonight.” My face reddened. Was my silence seen as cold, rather than polite?
That night, restless and wide awake, I wondered if I needed to laugh louder, speak faster; or hide parts of myself just to feel I belonged. Questions flooded my mind, none with answers.
A few days later, our teacher announced there would be a Culture Festival next week. “You’ ll prepare a stand to share your own culture — food, crafts, customs ... anything meaningful. You can not only display your culture but also make it interactive, allowing people to try new things, learn traditional skills. or share stories and cultural symbols,” she said. The class lit up with excitement. I sat frozen, mind racing: how could I share my traditions in English? The thought made my stomach twisted (扭曲). Yet, I gathered myself with a deep breath and signed up. After that, I threw myself wholeheartedly into preparations, until the day finally came.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

At the Culture Festival, I stood behind my stand, nervous but ready. Taking a deep breath, I once again neatly arranged all the well-prepared items: red paper and scissors. Soon, students and teachers gathered, curiosity in their eyes. I welcomed them with a smile and demonstrated: fold, cut, unfold — and a butterfly spread its wings. A wave of surprise rippled through the crowd. Encouraged, I invited a boy to try; his star turned out uneven, yet drew laughter and applause. More joined eagerly, and I moved among them, guiding their hands, praising their efforts and celebrating each creation. When a teacher proudly held up her paper flower, the cheers grew louder. Red pieces fell to the floor, and my confidence, once hidden, shone through every new pattern.
From that day on, my world here started to change. In the hallway, students waved butterflies from my stand and greeted me with bright “Ni hao!” My heart lifted as I waved back. In literature class, I gave voice to my ideas with newfound confidence. My English was not flawless, yet my voice was steady, and instead of silence I saw nods and smiles. After class, a girl asked softly, “Can you show us more about your culture?” Her words lingered in my heart, echoing like a gentle reminder. In that echo, I realized I had not only broken free from cultural shock but also found my place in a shared story — one written by many voices, yet open enough to hold my own.

7. Which of the following best describes Dr. Tucker?
A. Strict and curious. B. Careful and adventurous.
C. Positive and purposeful. D. Grateful and responsible.

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
At the Culture Festival, I stood behind my stand, nervous but ready.
