Unlike many surfers who sought the perfect wave,my interests always lay
beneath the sea's surface in a world I could only imagine and dream of.When I was
twelvo I made my first adventures in the deep.Later I would learn how.to dive,
expanding my world of exploration many times over.
Perhaps the greatest turning point in my life came when I was in high school and
第3页共10页
I wrote a letter to the famous Scripps Oceanographic Institution, asking how I might
leam more about the sea.A kind scientist answered my letter and told me how to
apply to Scripps for a summer scholarship, which I received.During one of their
courses that summer,I met Dr.Robert Norris,a marine geologist. He loved the sea
almost as much as I did.Soon he suggested I consider his school, the University of
California, for my study. One year later I became a member of the freshman class
Now my love affair with the sea became a serious endeavor. If I wanted to be an
undersea explorer,I needed to learn as much as I could about the laws of the physical
world that controlled the environment I wanted to enter. The undersea world is not our
natural world. It is unforgiving to those who make mistakes. At its greatest depths the
water temperature is near freezing, the pressure is eight tons per square inch, and it is
totally dark.It is easy to get lost in such a world.I needed to learn a lot about
geography,navigation,geology,biology,and many other things.
I decided another important thing for me to do was to join the U.S.Navy.If I was
going to be an undersea explorer,I would have to lead men and women on dangerous
adventures where they might get hurt, and I didn't want that to happen
In the Navy I learned discipline, organization, and how to motivate and lead
people on adventures so that we could explore the wonders of the deep.
Finally, the time came to put all that I had learned to use,to go forth with a team
of men and women and explore an adventure I am still on and hope to be on for many
years to come.

If you could work from any location in the world, where would you go?Picture
filling in a spreadsheet on a sandy Caribbean island,or maybe a little rooftop cafe in
Rome where you can sip great coffee while editing a social media video.More and
more countries are offering digital nomad (visas and therefore the chance to
work remotely, from wherever you'd like to.
This trend is growing, with a new report indicating 11%of US workers
identifying as digital nomads,a figure projected to rise by over 20 million in five
years.Initially, digital nomads were mostly freelancers like social media managers or
software developers, but now even traditional professionals like accountants and
lawyers are embracing this lifestyle. But what is the life of a digital nomad really like?
Rowena Hennigan, who writes for Farvard Business Review,is a digital nomad
along with her family. They have a"home base"in Spain but frequently go away for
workcations that can last from weeks to months. She says,"compared to a traditional
model of raising children, remote working has allowed my family to move away from
that kind of intensity, and this way,we all get to move at a more sustainable and
healthy pace."Plus, her family are regularly exposed to new cultures, languages and
natural beauty.
However,it doesn't work for everyone.Francesca Specter,a writer for The
Guardian,decided to country-hop and her "office"included beaches,cafes and
coworking spaces. But along with struggling to find reliable Wi-Fi and fighting the
terrible feeling of being left out,she wrote that she felt envious as she cooled her
overheating laptop in the shade while holidaymakers relaxed by the pool. She said,"I
was firefighting dull concerns, such as missing luggage or sleep loss after an
overnight flight delay."
So,it's not for everyone, but if you ever feel like escaping the rat-race,why not
give it a go?

"Two roads diverged in a wood,and I-
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
As Robert Frost reminded us,choices are often difficult and will bring both a
gain and a loss.Should I spend my Sunday playing golf or taking a day trip to the
North Fork with my wife?
If you are a golfer as I am,you will say "Certainly,go playing golf."Golf is
perhaps the greatest challenge to self-improvement.in golt, every swing is counted
and can easily be recalled and reviewed by the golfers as they lie in bed that evening,
and therefore,self-improvement is pursued.
Now let us return to the question at hand. You will not be surprised to hear that I
did in fact go to the North Fork. But,how has that improved me?Can it be quantified
()In golf, whose goal is to complete the game with as few shots as possible,if I
average 80 and I shoot a 76,I know that for that day at least I have improved upon my
former self and thus feel satisfied.
You may argue that travel is not about self-improvement at all but just about
having grand experiences.I beg to differ. It does matter how these things change and
improve me.Seeing the folks dancing in the streets should change you.And talking to
the manager of the biscuit shop ought to change you.I think travel does change us,
but it's very hard to say just how.How does one quantify buying a peach at a farm?
Or how do you quantify the tasty taste of the scones(司康饼)at a stand?
Reviewers have had a hard time analyzing the meaning of Robert Frost's poem.
To be honest,I would say all of us have a hard time analyzing our wish to travel to
faraway places.I am not sure what the answer is to this tricky question.I may not
have made any holes-in-one on the North Fork but I did enjoy those scones.

The next time you go into a bank,a store,or a supermarket,stop and listen.What
do you hear?30.It's similar to the music you listen to,but it's not exactly
the same. That's because this music was especially designed to relax you,or to give
you extra energy.Sometimes you don't even realize the music is playing, but you react
to the music anyway.
Quiet background music used to be called "elevator music"because we often
heard it in elevators. But lately we hear it in more and more places, and it has a new
name "Muzak".About one-third of the people in America listen to "Muzak"every day.
The music plays for 15 minutes at a time, with short pauses in between. It is always
more lively between ten and eleven in the morning, and between three and four in the
afternoon,when people are more tired.31
If you listen to Muzak carefully, you will probably recognize the names of many
of the songs. Some musicians or songwriters don't want their songs to be used as
Muzak, but others are happy when their songs are chosen.Why?32.
Music is often played in public places because it is designed to make people feel
less lonely when they are in an airport or a hotel. It has been proven that Muzak does
what it is designed to do.Tired office workers suddenly have more energy when they
hear the pleasant sound of Muzak in the background.
