Public speaking is a common source of anxiety and stress. Nonetheless, there may be times when you’ re tasked with talking to a large audience. Here are a few steps to help you make an effective presentation.
Prepare
Select and research your topic carefully. Wide reading will help you gather enough material and focus your research at the preparation stage.
Develop a rough outline of what you might include— this can come from any key points your lecture has told you to include.
Organize your research into your outline. Keep the time limit in mind, and make any cuts of unnecessary or unrelated information.
Write a draft of your speech It is especially useful if you are using vocabulary that you might be finding difficult to remember.
Summarise your written speech into brief notes. These will eventually become your numbered note cards.
Prepare visuals that you are going to use to support your presentation, like pictures, tables, GIFs, etc. Remember visual aids should be simple, clear and effective in supporting whatever you are saying. Avoid complex ones that are difficult to understand.
Practise
Know your confidence comes with knowledge of content. If you know what you are talking about, then you won’t feel nervous about what you are going to say.
Practice presenting your speech in front of a mirror, and if you have enough courage, ask your trusted friends to watch you. The more you practice, the more confident you will be.
Ask for constructive advice. Ask your friends for advice about your gestures, speed of delivery, and even the clarity (清晰) of your message.
Present
Get to the presentation early and meet your audience as they walk in. This might be a good way to calm your nerves, as you know who are in the room.
Practice standing at the front to get your feel for the room and space before you begin. Also, make sure any technology that you are using in the presentation is working.
Relax— if you are fully prepared you will make it!

B. The words you find…hard to remember.
C. The key points required to talk about.
D. The reason why you choose the topic.
27. How can you reduce nervousness in a presentation?
A. Use no technology in case it goes wrong.
B. Take all the advice from your friends.
C. Arrive at the presentation on time.
D. Know your speech content well.
28. To make an effective speech, you need to _.

Slowly, so slowly that we never even noticed how it happened, our family stopped talking to each other. Our own worlds opened up to us through the computer or the cell phone, through social media posts, short videos or online news.
Family Night was born when Mom called us for dinner. Jessica and I came and sat down. Dad finished his eating and started to rise from the table.
“Where are you going?” Mom questioned.
“To the living room. I have some work,” Dad replied as he hurried away. Mom’s face got tight, but she said nothing. About two minutes later, my cell phone buzzed. Jessica kept her earphones on, eye glued to her phone during most of the meal. Between notifications and endless scrolling, family dinners can feel more like eating with strangers than spending quality time together. Mom was clearly upset.
Family Night started the next week. Mom made three rules: no phones, no music, and no leaving the table. Everyone would eat together and play a game together “like a real family.”
All seemed to be going according to Mom’s plan until the first buzz of a cell phone. After dinner, we had been playing the board game for only ten minutes when another cell phone rang. This time the phone belonged to my father.
“Work’s calling. I have to answer,” he whispered as he hurried out of the room.
Mom sighed, but she forced a smile and encouraged us to continue with the game. We kept playing through every interruption (中断) afterwards: the beeping of Jessica’s phone, the buzz of another text message from Darnell, the soothing voice announcing the arrival of an e-mail on Dad’s computer. When the game was over, Mom freed us to our rooms.
That first Family Night was not a success, but Mom soldiered on. Every Monday evening we muted our electronics and gathered around the table; and each time, setting aside our technological toys became a little easier. The next two months my father would be taking business trips. We wouldn’t be able to have Family Night every Monday.
To my surprise I realized that I would miss those few hours each week when the house was filled with my family’s laughter and conversation. I was also glad to know that when we really wanted to, we could silence the electronic buzz and just be a family again.
29. Why did they start the Family Night?
A. Because electronics harmed the family relationship.
B. Because Mom was upset by Dad’s unconcerned behavior.
C. Because Dad paid too much attention to his work.
D. Because every one was busy doing important things.
30. Family Night made the family ________ than before.
A. busier B. closer C. more relaxed D. more talkative
31. What can we learn about the first Family Night?
A. Challenging but exciting. B. Unsuccessful but meaningful.
C. Tiring but satisfying. D. Busy but interesting.
32. What can we learn from this passage?
A. Teenagers are more addicted to electronic devices than adults.
B. Following traditions is the key to maintaining relationships.
C. A small conscious change can lead to big improvements.
D. Technology is the main cause of family distance.
C
Want to learn a new language or get A’s in college exams? Previous studies have shown that exercise can help stimulate the areas of the brain that convert (转换)new information into long-term memory. A new study has taken this information one step further and found the best time when exercise can help maximize learning.
Building upon past research that found exercise releases biochemicals that improve mental function, scientists at Radboud University and the University of Edinburgh conducted a study to determine when exercise was most beneficial to learning.
Participants — 72 healthy male and female adults — were first asked to perform a computer test that challenged their visual and spatial learning. After the test, all of the subjects watched nature documentaries, but two-thirds of them also exercised. Half of the exercising did circuit training (循环训练) on an exercise bike for 35 minutes immediately after the test. The other half did the same exercise but not until four hours after they had been tested.
Two days later, all of the participants returned to the lab for a recall test, and they were connected to MRI (磁共振成像) machines to assess their brain activity. The participants who exercised four hours after taking the computer test were able to recall what they had learned most accurately. Their brainwaves also showed more consistent levels of activity, indicating that their brains were less taxed to remember what they had learned.
According to this research, the best time to exercise to improve learning is four hours after studying. But why? That’s one question the researchers have yet to answer. Another question left unanswered is the level of exercise that might best improve learning. I’ve run enough marathons to prove the fact that my brain is anything but sharp during or after a tough workout. But the researchers noted that light workouts might not give the brain enough of a biochemical boost to improve learning.
33. What did the new study aim to explore?
A. When exercise is best for learning.
B. What biochemicals are good for health.
C How brainwaves should be measured.
D. Which area of the brain is the most active.
34. What does the underlined word mean in para4?
A. burdened B. addicted C. damaged D. confused
35. What might the author’s marathon running prove?
A. The findings of the study are reliable.
B. Hard exercise may not sharpen the brain.
C. Studies on the marathon are not enough.
D. Long-distance runners are often smart.
D
Psychologists tell us our self-image defines what we believe we can and cannot do. Each of us over the years has built up belief about ourselves: Unconsciously, our pictures of who we are have been formed by past experiences. Our successes and failures, what others have told us and what we think people believe about us all help form impressions of what we think we are. Because self-image is so important in our growth, it is important to examine our concepts of self in order to reach our full potential.
Changing our self-image is possible: Some psychologists suggest we begin to change our self-image by mentally picturing ourselves performing well at some task. Since we presently react to things based on our present images, it’s suggested that we replace those with better ones. In many experiments, people were asked to sit quietly for a few minutes each day and imagine themselves doing well. For instance, subjects would sit and imagine themselves throwing darts at a bull’s-eye on a target. Over a period of weeks, their dart game improved. This has been done with people who wanted to play chess better, throw a ball more accurately increase their salesmanship or musical talents, and improve many other skills. In most cases, remarkable improvement is made.
The point of changing self-image is not to develop an image of ourselves that is not real. To try to become something we really aren’t is just as wrong as living the unrealistic, inferior image we may have. The aim is to find the real self, to bring our mental images of ourselves in line with our true potential. However, it is generally accepted among psychologists that most of us fail to do justice to ourselves. We’re usually better than we think we are.
Another important part of changing self-image is to not think about past mistakes.Don’t let failures do harm. Our errors or humiliation over mistakes are necessary steps in learning. It is all right to make mistakes. But when they have taught us what we did wrong, we should forget them and not dwell on them. Sometimes we keep remembering our failures or mistakes and feel guilty or embarrassed about them. We let them take over, and then we develop a fear.
It is important to have realistic expectations of ourselves. Some of our dissatisfaction might come from expecting too much of ourselves. If we demand constant perfection in everything we do, we can be disappointed and our poor self- image will continue. If our goal is to reach perfection, we are doomed from the start.
36. Which situation agrees with the idea of the passage?
A. To outshine his colleagues, Joe sets an idealistic goal.
B. To get along with her classmates, Doris always humbles herself.
C. To become a star player, Alex repeatedly plays back his faults in his mind.
D. To win a speech contest, Tina visualizes herself speaking more confidently.
37. What is the purpose of Paragraph 3?
A. To confirm the effect of changing self-image.
B. To clarify the principle of changing self-image.
C. To propose a new view on changing self-image.
D. To stress the importance of changing self-image.
38. According to the author, how should we regard our past mistakes?
A They are part of our growth.
B. They are warnings for future.
C. They are tools for overcoming fear.
D. They are barriers to our development.
39. Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?
A. We Are What We Do
B. Be the Best We Can Be
C. We Are What We Think We Are
D. What We Are Decides What We Think
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)

Exam Anxiety
Has this ever happened to you? You’ve been studying hard for your midterm, but when you walk into your exam, your mind goes blank, your heart races fast, you get sweaty palms and find it hard to breathe. ____40____Everyone feels anxious during exams. Usually, it results from a fear of failure, lack of adequate preparation time, and bad experiences taking tests in the past.
This is normal and often helps you work harder, think faster, and generally improve your performance. ____41____You may also feel that other people are managing the exam better than you. This can cause you to feel that your mind has “gone blank” on information you know you have reviewed.
____42____Some choose to ignore the problem, while others don’t review because they think they will do badly anyway— and some even miss exams due to the anxiety. It can also be really easy to think that if you don’t try and then you fail, you won’t feel as bad as if you fail after trying really hard.
So what can you do to fight against the negative mindset and stay calm before and during your test?
____43____Yes, this seems obvious, but it’s worth repeating. If you feel confident that you’ve prepared thoroughly, you’ll feel more confident walking into the test. The second tip is simple: just start. The blank page can maximize your anxiety. ____44____You can always go back and change things later if needed, but a few quick answers can get the ball rolling. Besides, allocating your time is equally important. Look through the whole test before getting started. Mentally allocate how much time you’ll spend on each section. If there’s time to recheck, even better.
A. However, if you are overly anxious about the result, you may be unable to focus on your work.
B. Realizing time is almost up and that there’s still a lot of blank space will make you desperate.
C. After you get the paper, get some questions done right away to build up your confidence.
D. Therefore, people need an appropriate amount of pressure to help deal with exams.
E. If these classic signs of exam anxiety sound familiar, you’re not alone
F. People often deal with exam stress in many unhelpful ways.
G. The first thing you should do is to be prepared.

Write a draft of your speech. It is especially useful if you are using vocabulary that you might be finding difficult to remember.
Relax— if you are fully prepared, you will make it!
26. What can be included in the outline of your speech?
A. The list of material you read on the topic.
D Know your speech content well.
28. To make an effective speech, you need to _.
A. write down every detail on the numbered note cards
B. read broadly to collect enough material related to your topic
C. present as much information as possible to express your ideas
D. use vivid and complex visual aids to draw the attention of audience

C. How brainwaves should be measured.

C. To become a star player, Alex repeatedly plays back his faults in his mind.

C. To propose a new view on changing self-image.
D. To stress the importance of changing self-image.
