Starting this autumn semester, students at primary and middle schools in Beijing have longer break time between classes. It has been changed from 10 minutes to 15 minutes so that students can spend more time outdoors for their physical and mental (心理的) health.
During the break time between classes, Xiao Jingsheng from a Beijing School often rushed to the toilet then back to class with no time for anything else. But now that changes. “I can have more time to rest,” says the 14-year-old boy.
To help children better enjoy break-time activities, some schools mix break time with labor education (劳动教育) by opening planting areas and animal breeding zones (饲养区).
“We welcome new friends to our school—some ducks and rabbits!” says Zhang Boren, a 13-year-old student from Beijing 101 Middle School Kuangda Campus. “During the breaks, some play with these cute animals, while others exercise on the playground. We get closer to nature.”
As the break time is longer, safety is also important. Physical education (PE) teachers keep an eye on (密切关注) students playing on the ground to make sure everyone is safe. “Sometimes the ground can be wet in the morning, so we tell the students to do more upper body exercises to avoid (避免) running and slipping,” says one PE teacher.
1.How much time do primary and middle school students have to rest between classes in Beijing now?
2.What can Xiao Jingsheng do during the break time now?
3.Who are the new friends in Zhang Boren’s school?
4.Why do PE teachers keep an eye on students playing on the ground?

Many schools now plan study trips for students, and where these trips go has changed a lot. Now study trips often take place in quiet villages, not busy cities. Do you know why? Villages give students special hands-on learning. You can’t find this in cities.
These village study trips make learning more active. The countryside is like a big outdoor classroom. By watching, touching and experiencing, students learn about nature better. They can tell apart different plants in fields, look after baby chickens in country yards, and use farming tools on the farms. Young people also work together on group tasks: they feed animals, pick fruits and clean the yards. This helps them think better and work well in groups. “Growing vegetables is fun! I learn more by doing than reading.” says Li Wei, a 7th-grader. Zhang Tao, another student in her class, agrees, “Working on the farm tells me hard work is really important.” The quiet natural views and local customs (风俗) also make students feel closer to the joys of life.
Local people also welcome these trips because they help them live a better life. People in the villages can have new jobs like tour guides or teachers. They show students around villages, teach them how to farm, or tell stories about the mountains and rivers. Also, local shops and businesses sell fresh farm food or handmade goods to visitors.
Are you ready to step into this outdoor classroom and have your own memories in the village?
1.Where do study trips often take place now?
2.How can students learn about nature better during village study trips?
3.What group tasks do young people do during the trips?
4.Why do local people welcome the study trips?
5.Would you like to take a study trip in the countryside? Why?

Xiangqi, also known as Chinese chess in English, has a history of over a thousand years.
In ancient China, emperors (皇帝) and scholars (学者) played it. This game showed how smart they were.
Xiangqi has two main parts. One is the chessboard and the other is 32 pieces. Its board has lines and squares, and the pieces have different names and moves. It is easy to play. Each player starts with 16 pieces. When you play, you need to protect your own pieces and try to capture (捕获) the other player’s pieces. The player who catches the other player’s general will win.

Mr Barry sells me to Mr Jerry Barker, a cab driver. He has another horse called Captain.
Jerry cares about his horses. He keeps our stable clean and gives us lots of good food. He is also a good driver. He never whips us. He does not like the lazy people who are late for work because those people always want him to drive fast.
One day, two young men run up to Jerry. “We have to catch a train!” one of them shouts.
“Take us to the station as fast as you can. We’ll pay you extra (额外)!”
“I’m sorry,” Jerry says. “I won’t make my horses work too hard.”
Jerry does not care about extra money. The other cab drivers laugh at him.
We need a day to rest, so Jerry doesn’t work on Sundays. However, on one Sunday, our neighbour, Dinah Brown, comes to us worriedly.
“My mother is very sick. She is going to die,” she tells Jerry, “Please take me to her.” Jerry does not want us to work on a Sunday, but he wants to help Dinah.
“I don’t want to use my cab,” he says. “It’s too heavy for the horses to pull every day. I’ll borrow a small cart.”

5.What’s the last paragraph mainly about?
【答案】1.It’s the highest school in town. 2.Some live over 50 km away. 3.It’s modern. 4.About 8 days. 5.Konchog Rapten’s daily life.
【导语】本文是一篇记叙文,主要介绍了十岁学生Konchog Rapten所在的西藏聂拉木一所高海拔学校,介绍它的地理位置、学生、设施、特殊作息以及学生在校的日常生活。
1.第一段第三句“His school stands as the highest school in town”,所以填It’s the highest school in town.。
2.第二段3-4句“Some of them live more than 50 kilometres away. As a result, most students choose to live at the school”,简化为Some live over 50 km away.。
3.第三段第一句“The school is filled with modern facilities”,核心是“现代化”,所以填It’s modern.。
4.第四段第二句“go to school for ten days and then enjoy a four-day break”,一个月约30天,30÷(10+4)≈2.14个周期,休息约4×2=8 天,所以填About 8 days.。
5.最后一段描述“洗漱、吃早餐、学习、三餐、晚自习、睡觉”,是“Konchog Rapten的日常生活”,所以填Konchog Rapten’s daily life.。
