RED BANK, New Jersey (January 31, 2020). These days, women go to space. They sail around the world. They have all kinds of adventures (冒险). This wasn’t true hundreds of years ago. The preparation of food often requires science and careful planning. But sometimes, the best dishes and the things we use to cook them are invented by accident. Let's look at some examples.
◆ Coffee
It remains unclear where coffee first came from, but the most well-known story is about a 9th-century farmer and his sheep. One day, the farmer noticed that after eating berries from a certain plant his sheep became so energetic that they didn't go to sleep at night. A local wise man heard about it and decided to make a drink from the berries. The drink became popular, and the knowledge of the berries spread. By the 15th century, coffee was being grown on the Arabian Peninsula (阿拉伯半岛), from where it found its way to many other countries around the world.
◆ Tofu
Tofu was invented by chance in ancient China over 2000 years ago. No one is sure exactly how, but one story is that a cook accidentally dropped a special type of salt into a pot of soya milk(一锅豆浆). The salt made the milk become thick and soft, and that was what we now know as tofu. The cook must have tried it, and realized that he could use this to make some delicious new dishes. We might never know for sure how tofu was invented, but I’m very glad that the cook didn’t just throw the "thick milk" away.
Microwave
In 1945, Percy Spencer, an American engineer, was working on a
project about microwave, a very short wave that humans cannot see.
During one of his experiments(实验), he noticed that the chocolate
he had in his jacket pocket had melted(融化). This interested him,
so Percy started to try other food. He successfully cooked popcorn and realized he’d invented a new way of cooking. Nowadays, many of us can't even imagine our kitchens without this invention.

The need for something that can solve the problems in our daily lives often leads to new and interesting inventions. Here are some examples of inventions that were born to solve common daily problems.
Earle Dickson noticed that his wife often burned or cut herself accidentally while working in the kitchen. She would then need his help to put bandages (绑带) on the wounds. Since Dickson couldn’t always be there to help her, he invented a bandage that she could easily deal with herself. Sold under the brand name Band-Aid, these bandages are now used for many types of minor (not serious) cuts.
Then there was Bette Nesmith Graham, a secretary who wanted a simple way to correct her typing mistakes. One day, as she was watching painters use touch-up paint to a wall, the idea hit her that the same way could be used on paper. She mixed a white paint and used a small brush to apply it to her work. This small bottle of paint with brush finally came to be known as Liquid (液体) Paper.
In some cases, people invent things for one purpose but end up using them for another. Take tea bags for example. In 1908, a New York tea seller named Thomas Sullivan came up with the idea of creating small gifts for customers by putting tea leaves in small silk bags. Customers are supposed to take out the tea leaves from each bag before making a pot of tea. However, some people misunderstood and began putting the unopened bags into hot water, and the custom of using tea bags was born.
Sometimes inventions are used for their original (起初的) purposes. Other times they end up being used for something completely different. Either way, they make our lives a whole lot better.
8. How many inventions are mentioned in the passage?
A. 2. B. 3. C. 4. D. 5.
9. Why was the Band-Aid invented?
A. Because it made wounds become healthy.
B. Because a secretary wanted to correct her mistakes.
C. Because it can be used for many types of serious cuts.
D. Because Dickson’s wife needed to deal with her wounds by herself.
10. How was the custom of using tea bags born?
A. It was born from a misunderstanding.
B. It was born from a new idea to make tea.
C. It was born from a need to take out tea leaves.
D. It was born from a tea trade between countries.
11. Which of the following is correct according to the article?
A. Inventions are always used for their original purposes.
B. The invention of Band-Aids came from an unexpected accident.
C. Thomas Sullivan was the first person to sell tea in the United States.
D. Liquid Paper invented by a secretary was used to correct typewriting.

The sixth planet was ten times larger than the last one. There the little prince met an old gentleman who was writing a big book.
“What are you doing?” said the little prince.
“What is that big book?”
“I am a geographer,” the old gentleman said to him.
“And I am writing about all the seas, mountains and deserts.”
“That is interesting,” said the little prince. “So could you tell me something about your planet?”
“I couldn’t tell you,” said the geographer.
“But you are a geographer!”
“Exactly,” the geographer said. “But I am not an explorer. The geographer never goes out of his office. He stays at home and receives explorers. He asks them questions and writes down their discoveries. If an explorer’s stories are interesting, the geographer checks his character.”
“Why check character?” asked the little prince.
“Because a liar would bring false information to the geographer. So would a man who drinks too much.”
“Why is that?”
“Because drunk men see double. Then the geographer would mark two mountains where there is only one.”
“I know someone,” said the little prince. “He would be a bad explorer.”
“Maybe. So when an explorer is proved to be honest, we study his discovery.”
“Go and see for yourself?”
“No, that is the explorer’s job. The geographer stays in his room.”
12. What does a geographer do according to the passage?
A. He travels around to discover new places. B. He writes down explorers’ discoveries.
C. He makes big books for little princes. D. He travels to see seas and mountains.
13. Why does the geographer check an explorer’s character?
A. To make sure he tells the truth. B. To see if he likes reading books.
C. To decide if he can write books. D. To help him stop drinking too much.
14. Which of the following is TRUE?
A. The geographer likes travelling everywhere. B. Liars may give wrong information to geographers.
C. Drunk men can be good explorers. D. The little prince works as an explorer.
15. What can we infer about the geographer?
A. He is lazy and unwilling to go outside. B. He is rude to all visitors.
C. He knows little about the world. D. He likes making friends with explorers.

第七部分 书面表达 Through Failure, I Grow
Throughout our life, we may experience successes or failures that help us grow up.
I still remember the time when I failed an important English speech contest. I prepared for it for weeks. However, on the stage, I was extremely nervous and forgot my words. I felt very embarrassed and sad at that moment. After the competition, my teacher comforted me and encouraged me to practice more. I took her advice. I practiced in front of my classmates every day to build up my confidence.
This failure taught me a valuable lesson. I learned that failure is not the end of the world. The most important thing is to learn from mistakes and never give up. Now, I am not afraid of speaking in public anymore.
