The path is famous for its beautiful ocean views and peaceful surroundings. We started early in the morning full of energy, Carrying only a small bottle of water, some snacks. The first part of the path was easy, and we enjoyed the sea win. After about two hours, we reached a point where the path split into two directions. We took the left path, which seemed more adventurous. After walking for another hour, we realized we were no longer following the main path. We were lost. I felt a sense of panic rising in me, but I knew I had to stay calm for my family. I remember a tip from a survival show. Look for running water. I listen carefully and heard the sound of a stream nearby. We followed the stream downhill and eventually IT let us back to the main path. We were exhausted but relieved that they taught me the importance of staying calm and using common sense and difficult situations. A篇
D. By making an online submission a day ahead.
Reservations must be submitted online at least 24 hours in advance.
at least 24 hours in advance 与 a day ahead 完全对应。
• A. By calling the librarian in advance——张冠李戴。
• B. By sending an email 2 hours before the visit——时间错位。
• C. By going to the 3rd floor in person——偷换概念。
【定位句】...an overdue fee of $0.50 per day will be charged for late returns.
A. Always wear the student ID cards.
Students must wear and display their official student ID cards at all times.
定位句为 General Rules 第一条,at all times(始终)与选项 always 同义复现。
• B. Keep electronic devices turned off——偷换概念。
• C. Make phone calls quietly inside——与原文相反。须走到馆外接听(step outside to answer phone calls)。
• D. Avoid drinking water from bottles——
C. She was deeply shaken by air accidents.
News reports about air disasters on TV filled me with fear. I decided I would never set foot on an aircraft again.
deeply shaken(深受震动)是对 filled me with fear 的同义转述。
• A. She preferred traveling by car——
• B. She experienced panic during past flights——时空错位。
• D. She wanted to save money for an anniversary——
C. Ruin.
I couldn't crush his dream just because of my fear.
D. By taking active steps to mentally prepare.
I watched videos on overcoming fears and practiced deep breathing every day.
• A. By seeking help from her husband——
• B. By focusing on Alaska's beautiful scenery——
• C. By asking experts for advice continuously——
B. Courage counts in overcoming fear.
I see the moment I climbed my own mountain of fear. I pushed through with courage and effort, and I flew.
• A. Fear disappears with age——
• C. Love breaks down misunderstanding——
• D. Nature offers life lessons——
A. They suffer less daily fatigue.
【定位句】children who are more physically active tend to experience less fatigue in their daily lives
• B. They perform better in school tasks——
• C. They handle life challenges better——偷换概念。
• D. They experience more energy boost——
B. To supply a broader evaluation perspective.
Parents often have a broader view of how fatigue affects a child's daily activities. Bringing those perspectives together gives us a more complete understanding...
• A. To evaluate their parenting skills——
• C. To guide children to express their feelings——
• D. To raise their awareness in fatigue detection——
C. They combined multiple professional strengths.
The project was led by Dr. Kavya Iyer and brought together researchers and pediatric doctors with complementary skills.
• A. They relied on long-term historical data——
• B. They cured children with special needs——
• D. They prioritized academic output over practice——
D. To provide practical support for target groups.
Our goal is to inform future research and support families, therapists, and healthcare providers.
• A. To design specific workout plans——
• B. To replace traditional treatment——
• C. To encourage intense daily physical exercise——曲解。
D. To respond to climate effects.
However, as declining ice continues to threaten bear populations, local leaders are diversifying into beluga whale watching, aurora spotting, and dogsledding.
• A. To meet tourists' demands——
• B. To reduce local wildlife risks——
• C. To follow a new trend——
B. Through local community control.
Churchill negotiated with governments for local ownership... took over the port and rail lines. Through local management, over 600 kilometers of track was repaired.
定位句的关键动作是 negotiated for local ownership→took over→through local management,即靠社区自主管理实现修复。
• A. By seeking government funding——
• C. By turning to ancient tradition——
• D. Through the employment of latest technology——
B. Complaints bring no constructive solutions.
Don't be stuck in worrying about it. That's not going to get you any points. You don't just say ‘I got a problem’; you go there with the fix.
• A. Traditional wisdom guarantees success——绝对化。
• C. Emotional support helps get through tough times——
• D. Environmental protection requires international aid——
A. Crisis, Responses, and Rebirth.
Changes have broken, remade and still continue to reshape Churchill... Today, experts consider Churchill a world-class model for climate adaptation and community resilience.
• B. Tourism, Wildlife, and Climate——
• C. Problems, Science, and Solutions——
• D. Facilities, Economy, and Tradition——
F. So, spending time screening candidates in advance is far more efficient.
Many learners start by messaging candidates randomly, only to encounter awkward silences or unbalanced sessions.
To avoid wasting valuable time, you must clearly state your expectations before committing to a regular schedule.
②词汇复现——wasting valuable time 与 far more efficient 语义呼应。
• D. Giving a partner a second chance...——
• E. You should also ensure that both of you share identical hobbies——also
规律总结:段末空白后若紧跟“To avoid.../To do...”
B. Knowing what you need from a session is equally essential.
Consider factors like your current proficiency level, session duration, and preferred correction style... Also, clarify if you need to switch back to your native language for complex points.
Sharing these preferences early helps both sides decide whether they are a good match.
• E. ...share identical hobbies——
• G. Finally, you must distinguish...——Finally
规律总结:列举多项因素后,空格处常用“Knowing what you need / These factors matter”类概括句收尾,且下句常以 these/this 复指。
C. It is vital to recognize when an exchange is no longer working.
Trying to force a failing exchange wastes time for both parties.
If a partner repeatedly fails to respect your schedule or meet your needs, politely switch them to “friend” status and look for someone new.
②词汇复现——a failing exchange 与 no longer working 同义。
• D. Giving a partner a second chance...——
• A. Being a good partner is a two-way street——
A. Being a good partner is a two-way street.
However, a failed exchange is not always the other person's fault.
To keep your ideal partner engaged, you must also contribute actively to the flow of each session.
②词汇复现——下句 also contribute actively 与 two-way 呼应。③代词 you 与下句 you must also 一致。
• D. Giving a partner a second chance...——
• F. So, spending time screening...——
G. Finally, you must distinguish between a practice partner and an instructor.
Preparing relevant vocabulary, questions, or a quick script in advance is an effective way to avoid flat sessions...
Language exchange partners are primarily for conversational practice, not formal instruction. They are rarely equipped to explain complex grammar rules or structure systematic lessons.
划清“练习”与“教学”的界限,G 项的 distinguish between a practice partner and an instructor 正是这一界限的概括。
• D. Giving a partner a second chance...——
• E. ...share identical hobbies——

• A. hang out(闲逛)、B. set off(出发)、C. make believe(假装)均不合逻辑。
B. enabling
The rope caught the man around the neck and one arm, ___ Jory and a bystander to pull him back.
• A. urging(催促)、C. training(训练)、D. reminding(提醒)都不能接“把人拉回来”这一结果。
D. luck
Although the rescue appeared to be a sudden act, it was not simply a matter of ___.
• A. comfort(安慰)、B. patience(耐心)、C. duty(责任)都不构成“突发—准备”的对比。
A. prepared
The skill he developed on the campground ___ him for the dangerous moment.
理由:prepare sb. for sth.
• B. rewarded(奖励)、C. delayed(延误)、D. silenced(使沉默)均不合语境。
A. worried
Jory's grandfather admitted that he initially felt ___ when he saw what his grandson was doing.
• B. relieved(宽慰)、C. satisfied(满意)、D. ashamed(羞愧)都不符合“看到孩子冒险”的第一反应。
C. acted
【定位句】...but Jory ___ out of natural kindness because helping others was simply part of who he was.
理由:act out of...(出于……
• A. collapsed(倒塌)、B. reflected(反思)、D. commented(评论)均不能与 out of natural kindness 搭配。

• A. added(补充)、B. assessed(评估)、C. questioned(质疑)都不能表达“以事例印证观点”。
B. ordinary

That's when Elise took matters into her own hands.
She buried herself in hurricane-safety guidelines and interviewed local weather experts, turning what she learned into a mini-course, Storm Smart. It covered everything she once longed to know: packing an emergency kit, steering clear of floodwaters and fallen power lines, and choosing the safest room at home. To make the lessons lively, she designed quizzes and role-plays. Going from classroom to classroom, Elise presented Storm Smart at local high schools, and soon curious students were firing questions at her.
Elise's dedication to the mini-course, Storm Smart, finally paid off.
When the next storm hit months later, students who had taken her course responded calmly—checking their kits, helping younger neighbors and guiding their families to safe rooms. “For the first time, I wasn't scared,” one student told the local newspaper. Impressed, the school board decided to include Storm Smart in its regular curriculum. Looking at her safer, better-prepared community, Elise smiled: one determined teenager really could make a difference.
• 主题升华:结尾 one determined teenager really could make a difference 呼应“个人行动守护社区”。

Text 1
M: I've heard it's going to clear up this afternoon. Do you want to fly kites in the park?
W: I doubt it. Look at those dark clouds and the trees bending in the wind. I think we're in for a downpour.
Text 2
W: Hello, welcome to Burger House. Are you ready to order?
M: Actually, I just need to use the ATM outside to get some cash. Is it working today?
W: Sorry, there's an out-of-service sign on it.
Text 3
M: Good evening, madam. Welcome to our hotel. Do you have a reservation?
W: Yes, under the name of Sarah Smith. And I'd like a room on a higher floor if possible.
Text 4
W: It's a quarter past eight. You'd better hurry, or you'll miss the nine o'clock train.
M: No rush. I just saw a notification that it's been delayed for an hour. I'll get a coffee first.
Text 5
M: I'm thinking of buying a new smartphone online. It's cheaper.
W: I prefer stores because you can check the phone and get better service.
Text 6
W: Mark, the boss wants us to organize a team-building event next month. Any ideas?
M: I was thinking we could go hiking in the mountains.
W: That sounds too tiring for everyone. We need something fun and suitable for the whole team.
M: How about indoor relay races?
W: It sounds good, but with 30 people it may be difficult to arrange. What about a beach volleyball game instead? Everyone can join in it and have a good time together.
M: Good idea. It's outdoors and fun. I'll check the weather and look for some available courts.
Text 7
M: Hey, I found a great apartment near the city center. It seems perfect for us. Look at the information.
W: It does look nice, but I'm worried about the price. The rent is far beyond what we can afford.
M: You're right. I also noticed that it says no pets allowed. We wouldn't be able to bring our cat.
W: That's a problem too. Let's not choose this one. What about the other apartment we saved? The one near the park.
M: I checked the details. It's a little farther from the subway station, but it's cheaper and allows pets.
W: Great. Let's call the agent now and ask if we can visit it this afternoon.
Text 8
W: I'm reading a fascinating book called The Lost City. It's about a ruined city in the desert.
M: Sounds like something from the movie Temple of Doom a bit.
W: But this is more realistic. The author actually worked on digs in Egypt.
M: So, are there traps and secret passages like those in the movie?
W: Not exactly. The real challenge in the book is dealing with sandstorms and water shortages. A historian's diary, they discover, is the key to understanding the civilization.
M: Wait, in the movie, the hero finds a diary too, which helps him find the treasure?
W: True. That's one similarity. In both the book and the movie, the characters rely on an ancient text to guide them, although the stories are very different.
Text 9
W: Hey John, I finally got that promotion to senior account manager.
M: Congratulations, Lisa. That's wonderful news. You definitely deserve it.
W: Thanks. But to be honest, I'm a bit nervous. I'll be leading a team of five people.
M: That's a big step, but you've already trained the new staff for a year now. You'll be great at managing them.
W: My main job is handling the key client accounts, but I'm worried about the extra paperwork.
M: Don't worry, the first few weeks is always tough. Remember when I got promoted last year, I felt the same way.
W: How did you manage it?
M: Just take it day by day. And if you need any tips on dealing with the senior management, I'm always here to help.
Text 10
M: Last weekend, my family decided to go hiking along a coastal path near our city. The path is famous for its beautiful ocean views and peaceful surroundings. We started early in the morning full of energy, carrying only a small bottle of water and some snacks. The first part of the path was easy and we enjoyed the sea wind. After about two hours, we reached a point where the path split into two directions. We took the left path, which seemed more adventurous. After walking for another hour, we realized we were no longer following the main path. We were lost. I felt a sense of panic rising in me, but I knew I had to stay calm for my family. I remembered a tip from a survival show: look for running water. I listened carefully and heard the sound of a stream nearby. We followed the stream downhill and eventually it led us back to the main path. We were exhausted, but relieved. That day taught me the importance of staying calm and using common sense in difficult situations.

When I was young,flying meant adventure.But everything changed as I grew up.News
reports about air disasters on TV filled me with fear.I decided I would never set foot on an aircraft
again.
For years,I kept that promise.My husband,Al,and I traveled everywhere by car.I
convinced myself we weren't missing out.But deep down,I knew I was just hiding my fear.
Then, our fortieth wedding anniversary approached. My husband had one lifelong dream:to
see Alaska. It had been on his bucket list for a long time. There was no way to get there except by
plane.Seeing his excitement,I felt terrible.I couldn't crush his dream just because of my fear.
After weeks of inner struggle,I booked the trip. But as the departure date neared, panic followed
me day and night.I was suffering behind the smile I showed him.
We were originally set to leave in June, but I came down with flu,so we canceled our plans.
I was secretly relieved.When I fully recovered,Al brought it up again.This time,I had no
excuses left.I watched videos on overcoming fears and practiced deep breathing every day.
I walked into the airport with a racing heart. As the plane moved down the runway,I breathed

whales swim by.But the most beautiful sight was the smile on Al's face-a smile I hadn't seen in
years.Looking back at our photos,I don't just see mountains and ice.I see the moment I climbed

Fatigue()is a common daily challenge for children with developmental disabilities, often
limiting their ability to fully participate in school, play, and other everyday activities. However,a
recent study by researchers at Virginia Tech offers a hopeful message:children who are more
physically active tend to experience less fatigue in their daily lives.
Published in the journal Behavioral Sciences, the study examined the complex relationship
between physical activity and fatigue in children with developmental disabilities, such as cerebral
palsy and Down syndrome, comparing them with typically developing peers().Researchers
collected valuable information from both children and their parents through detailed questionnaires.
Among children with cerebral palsy, parents reported that those who spent more time being active
faced fewer fatigue-related challenges.
Importantly, the study gathered reports from parents and children separately, allowing the
research team to compare how children experienced fatigue with how parents observed it.The
approach revealed clear differences between the two perspectives.Parents of children with
disabilities were generally far more likely to recognize signs of fatigue than the children themselves.
"One of the reasons we included both parent and child perspectives is that fatigue can be
difficult for children to describe and understand,"said Stephanie DeLuca, senior author of the
study."Parents often have a broader view of how fatigue affects a child's daily activities.Bringing
those perspectives together gives us a more complete understanding of what families are experiencing.'
The project was led by Dr.Kavya Iyer and brought together researchers and pediatric doctors
with complementary (skills.By combining scientific research with practical clinical
experience, the team was able to better explore ways to improve long-term health outcomes for
children with special needs.
Understanding fatigue is essential because it shapes how children engage in healthy habits that
support long-term well-being."By bringing together researchers and specialists,we were able to
better understand how physical activity and fatigue interact,Iyer explained."Our goal is to inform
future research and support families, therapists, and healthcare providers."
28.What does the study show about active children with developmental disabilities?
A.They suffer less daily fatigue.
B.They perform better in school tasks.
C.They handle life challenges better.
D.They experience more energy boost.

A.They relied on long-term historical data.
B.They cured children with special needs.

31.What is the purpose of the study according to lyer?
A.To design specific workout plans.

Changes have broken, remade and still continue to reshape Churchill,a remote town where
tundra()meets forest on the shore of Hudson Bay.When a major local organization shut
down, the economic foundation collapsed.Rail service and cargo ships-the lifeblood for a town
unreachable by road-suddenly disappeared. To make matters worse,human-caused climate change
has warmed the region four times faster than the worldwide average, causing melting permafrost(
化的冻土)to shift building foundations and decreasing sea ice to threaten local wildlife..
Facing disastrous economic and environmental crises, the town refused to give in.Initially,
residents turned to polar bear tourism, inventing custom rough-terrain vehicles to safely guide
visitors and earning the title"polar bear capital of the world".However,as declining ice continues
to threaten bear populations, local leaders are diversifying into beluga whale watching, aurora
spotting, and dogsledding.Furthermore,to fight against ground sinking caused by melting
permafrost, institutions like Polar Bears International have adopted engineering innovations, using
adjustable metal tools under foundations to re-level buildings.
The most critical breakthrough involved reclaiming local infrastructure(基础建设).When a
severe 2017 storm destroyed the poorly maintained private railway, cutting the town off for 18
months,Churchill negotiated with governments for local ownership. In 2018,the Arctic Gateway
Group-a partnership of 41 First Nations and northern communities-took over the port and rail
lines.Through local management, over 600 kilometers of track was repaired, and port shipping
volume more than tripled.
Today, experts consider Churchill a world-class model for climate adaptation and community
resilience().The secret lies deep in its rural mindset and tradition.Over two-thirds of
residents are locals, possessing a heritage of adapting to tough environmental shifts. As Mayor Mike
Spence noted,"Don't be stuck in worrying about it.That's not going to get you any points. You,
don't just say I got a problem';you go there with the fix."By combining traditional resilience with,
innovative strategies,Churchill demonstrates how lonely communities can successfully shape their.
own future.
32.Why did Churchill diversify its tourism offers?
A.To meet tourists'demands.
B.To reduce local wildlife risks.
C.To follow a new trend.
D.To respond to climate effects.
33.How did Churchill restore its rail and port?
S
A.By seeking government funding.
B.Through local community control.
C.By turning to ancient tradition.
D.Through the employment of latest technology.

A language exchange partner is someone who volunteers to chat with you in their native
language in return for your help. While the concept sounds simple, finding an effective match can
be surprisingly tough. Many learners start by messaging candidates randomly, only to encounter
awkward silences or unbalanced sessions.36
To avoid wasting valuable time, you must clearly state your expectations before committing to a
regular schedule.Consider factors like your current proficiency level, session duration, and
preferred correction style. For instance,do you want immediate corrections or a summary of errors
at the end? Also, clarify if you need to switch back to your native language for complex points.
37 Sharing these preferences early helps both sides decide whether they are a good match.
Even with initial planning, not every partnership will work out as hoped. You may meet
partners who dominate the conversation, lack patience,or consistently arrive unprepared and
distracted().Trying to force a failing exchange wastes time for both parties.38 If a
partner repeatedly fails to respect your schedule or meet your needs, politely switch them to
"friend"status and look for someone new.
However,a failed exchange is not always the other person's fault.39 To keep your ideal
partner engaged, you must also contribute actively to the flow of each session.Preparing relevant
vocabulary, questions,or a quick script()in advance is an effective way to avoid flat sessions
and keep the discussion structured.
40 Language exchange partners are primarily for conversational practice, not formal
instruction. They are rarely equipped to explain complex grammar rules or structure systematic
lessons. If you need systematic teaching rather than general fluency, investing in a professional
tutor()will yield far better results than expecting an untrained partner to act as an educator.
A.Being a good partner is a two-way street.
B.Knowing what you need from a session is equally essential.
C.It is vital to recognize when an exchange is no longer working.
D.Giving a partner a second chance can often save a rocky match.
E.You should also ensure that both of you share identical hobbies.
F.So,spending time screening candidates in advance is far more efficient.
G.Finally, you must distinguish between a practice partner and an instructor.

Sixteen-year-old Elise Raurell had lived in South Florida all her life,a coastal region where
warm ocean winds often gave way to fierce summer storms. However, nothing quite prepared her for
the damage caused by Hurricane Irma that hit the region. When the massive storm swept through
her neighborhood,it left behind a scene of chaotic destruction-uprooted pine trees blocking roads,
broken glass scattered()across sidewalks,continuous power failure,and flooded streets.In
the frightening days that followed,as families struggled to live without electricity or clean water,
Elise noticed a deeply troubling reality. While adults tried their best to handle emergency repairs
and secure basic supplies, teenagers and children were totally confused, having no fundamental
understanding of how to protect themselves before, during,or after such a natural disaster.
Driven by curiosity and a growing sense of responsibility,Elise began asking around at local
high schools, assuming that emergency response measures were surely integrated into the standard
curriculum().To her shock, she discovered a great gap in the school system.Despite living
in one of the most hurricane-prone regions in the nation, public schools offered virtually no formal
instruction on hurricane preparedness and emergency safety.Crucial,life-saving knowledge-such
as how to prepare a practical emergency survival kit,how to avoid standing floodwater where fallen
power lines might pose a deadly risk,or how to identify safe internal rooms away from glass windows
during high winds-was entirely absent from classroom lessons.
The realization hit her hard:if students weren't taught these vital skills at school, many would
remain dangerously unprepared when the next storm hit.Determined to bridge this critical gap and
safeguard her peers,Elise decided that if no one else was going to teach these life-saving lessons,
she would have to step up and do it herself.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
That's when Elise took matters into her own hands.
Elise's dedication to the mini-course,Storm Smart, finally paid off.

When I was young, flying meant adventure. But everything changed as I grew up. News reports about air disasters on TV filled me with fear. I decided I would never set foot on an aircraft again.
For years, I kept that promise. My husband, Al, and I traveled everywhere by car. I convinced myself we weren't missing out. But deep down, I knew I was just hiding my fear.
Then, our fortieth wedding anniversary approached. My husband had one lifelong dream: to see Alaska. It had been on his bucket list for a long time. There was no way to get there except by plane. Seeing his excitement, I felt terrible. I couldn't crush his dream just because of my fear. After weeks of inner struggle, I booked the trip. But as the departure date neared, panic followed me day and night. I was suffering behind the smile I showed him.
We were originally set to leave in June, but I came down with flu, so we canceled our plans. I was secretly relieved. When I fully recovered, Al brought it up again. This time, I had no excuses left. I watched videos on overcoming fears and practiced deep breathing every day.
I walked into the airport with a racing heart. As the plane moved down the runway, I breathed deeply. As it lifted higher, I kept breathing. Before long, we were above the clouds, and I realized I was okay.
We spent twelve wonderful days in Alaska. I stood at the base of a glacier(冰川) and watched whales swim by. But the most beautiful sight was the smile on Al's face—a smile I hadn't seen in years. Looking back at our photos, I don't just see mountains and ice. I see the moment I climbed my own mountain of fear. I pushed through with courage and effort, and I flew. I finally made it.

Fatigue(疲劳) is a common daily challenge for children with developmental disabilities, often limiting their ability to fully participate in school, play, and other everyday activities. However, a recent study by researchers at Virginia Tech offers a hopeful message: children who are more physically active tend to experience less fatigue in their daily lives.
Published in the journal Behavioral Sciences, the study examined the complex relationship between physical activity and fatigue in children with developmental disabilities, such as cerebral palsy and Down syndrome, comparing them with typically developing peers(同龄人). Researchers collected valuable information from both children and their parents through detailed questionnaires. Among children with cerebral palsy, parents reported that those who spent more time being active faced fewer fatigue-related challenges.
Importantly, the study gathered reports from parents and children separately, allowing the research team to compare how children experienced fatigue with how parents observed it. The approach revealed clear differences between the two perspectives. Parents of children with disabilities were generally far more likely to recognize signs of fatigue than the children themselves. “One of the reasons we included both parent and child perspectives is that fatigue can be difficult for children to describe and understand,” said Stephanie DeLuca, senior author of the study. “Parents often have a broader view of how fatigue affects a child's daily activities. Bringing those perspectives together gives us a more complete understanding of what families are experiencing.”
The project was led by Dr. Kavya Iyer and brought together researchers and pediatric doctors with complementary(互补的) skills. By combining scientific research with practical clinical experience, the team was able to better explore ways to improve long-term health outcomes for children with special needs.
Understanding fatigue is essential because it shapes how children engage in healthy habits that support long-term well-being. “By bringing together researchers and specialists, we were able to better understand how physical activity and fatigue interact,” Iyer explained. “Our goal is to inform future research and support families, therapists, and healthcare providers.”
35. What does the study show about active children with developmental disabilities?
A. They suffer less daily fatigue.
B. They perform better in school tasks.
C. They handle life challenges better.
D. They experience more energy boost.
36. Why were parents involved in the study?
A. To evaluate their parenting skills.
B. To supply a broader evaluation perspective.
C. To guide children to express their feelings.
D. To raise their awareness in fatigue detection.
37. What can be inferred about the research team?
A. They relied on long-term historical data.
B. They cured children with special needs.
C. They combined multiple professional strengths.
D. They prioritized academic output over practice.
38. What is the purpose of the study according to Iyer?
A. To design specific workout plans.
B. To replace traditional treatment.
C. To encourage intense daily physical exercise.
D. To provide practical support for target groups.

Changes have broken, remade and still continue to reshape Churchill, a remote town where tundra(冻原) meets forest on the shore of Hudson Bay. When a major local organization shut down, the economic foundation collapsed. Rail service and cargo ships—the lifeblood for a town unreachable by road—suddenly disappeared. To make matters worse, human-caused climate change has warmed the region four times faster than the worldwide average, causing melting permafrost(融化的冻土) to shift building foundations and decreasing sea ice to threaten local wildlife.
Facing disastrous economic and environmental crises, the town refused to give in. Initially, residents turned to polar bear tourism, inventing custom rough-terrain vehicles to safely guide visitors and earning the title “polar bear capital of the world”. However, as declining ice continues to threaten bear populations, local leaders are diversifying into beluga whale watching, aurora spotting, and dogsledding. Furthermore, to fight against ground sinking caused by melting permafrost, institutions like Polar Bears International have adopted engineering innovations, using adjustable metal tools under foundations to re-level buildings.
The most critical breakthrough involved reclaiming local infrastructure(基础设施建设). When a severe 2017 storm destroyed the poorly maintained private railway, cutting the town off for 18 months, Churchill negotiated with governments for local ownership. In 2018, the Arctic Gateway Group—a partnership of 41 First Nations and northern communities—took over the port and rail lines. Through local management, over 600 kilometers of track was repaired, and port shipping volume more than tripled.
Today, experts consider Churchill a world-class model for climate adaptation and community resilience(适应力). The secret lies deep in its rural mindset and tradition. Over two-thirds of residents are locals, possessing a heritage of adapting to tough environmental shifts. As Mayor Mike Spence noted, “Don't be stuck in worrying about it. That's not going to get you any points. You don't just say ‘I got a problem’; you go there with the fix.” By combining traditional resilience with innovative strategies, Churchill demonstrates how lonely communities can successfully shape their own future.
39. Why did Churchill diversify its tourism offers?
A. To meet tourists' demands.
B. To reduce local wildlife risks.
C. To follow a new trend.
D. To respond to climate effects.
40. How did Churchill restore its rail and port?
A. By seeking government funding.
B. Through local community control.
C. By turning to ancient tradition.
D. Through the employment of latest technology.
41. What does Mike Spence suggest in his statement?
A. Traditional wisdom guarantees success.
B. Complaints bring no constructive solutions.
C. Emotional support helps get through tough times.
D. Environmental protection requires international aid.
42. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Crisis, Responses, and Rebirth
B. Tourism, Wildlife, and Climate
C. Problems, Science and Solutions
D. Facilities, Economy, and Tradition

A language exchange partner is someone who volunteers to chat with you in their native language in return for your help. While the concept sounds simple, finding an effective match can be surprisingly tough. Many learners start by messaging candidates randomly, only to encounter awkward silences or unbalanced sessions. ____36____
To avoid wasting valuable time, you must clearly state your expectations before committing to a regular schedule. Consider factors like your current proficiency level, session duration, and preferred correction style. For instance, do you want immediate corrections or a summary of errors at the end? Also, clarify if you need to switch back to your native language for complex points. ____37____ Sharing these preferences early helps both sides decide whether they are a good match.
Even with initial planning, not every partnership will work out as hoped. You may meet partners who dominate the conversation, lack patience, or consistently arrive unprepared and distracted(分心). Trying to force a failing exchange wastes time for both parties. ____38____ If a partner repeatedly fails to respect your schedule or meet your needs, politely switch them to “friend” status and look for someone new.
However, a failed exchange is not always the other person's fault. ____39____ To keep your ideal partner engaged, you must also contribute actively to the flow of each session. Preparing relevant vocabulary, questions, or a quick script(稿) in advance is an effective way to avoid flat sessions and keep the discussion structured.
____40____ Language exchange partners are primarily for conversational practice, not formal instruction. They are rarely equipped to explain complex grammar rules or structure systematic lessons. If you need systematic teaching rather than general fluency, investing in a professional tutor(导师) will yield far better results than expecting an untrained partner to act as an educator.
A. Being a good partner is a two-way street.
B. Knowing what you need from a session is equally essential.
C. It is vital to recognize when an exchange is no longer working.
D. Giving a partner a second chance can often save a rocky match.
E. You should also ensure that both of you share identical hobbies.
F. So, spending time screening candidates in advance is far more efficient.
G. Finally, you must distinguish between a practice partner and an instructor.

Sixteen-year-old Elise Raurell had lived in South Florida all her life, a coastal region where warm ocean winds often gave way to fierce summer storms. However, nothing quite prepared her for the damage caused by Hurricane Irma that hit the region. When the massive storm swept through her neighborhood, it left behind a scene of chaotic destruction—uprooted pine trees blocking roads, broken glass scattered(散落) across sidewalks, continuous power failure, and flooded streets. In the frightening days that followed, as families struggled to live without electricity or clean water, Elise noticed a deeply troubling reality. While adults tried their best to handle emergency repairs and secure basic supplies, teenagers and children were totally confused, having no fundamental understanding of how to protect themselves before, during, or after such a natural disaster.
Driven by curiosity and a growing sense of responsibility, Elise began asking around at local high schools, assuming that emergency response measures were surely integrated into the standard curriculum(课程). To her shock, she discovered a great gap in the school system. Despite living in one of the most hurricane-prone regions in the nation, public schools offered virtually no formal instruction on hurricane preparedness and emergency safety. Crucial, life-saving knowledge—such as how to prepare a practical emergency survival kit, how to avoid standing floodwater where fallen power lines might pose a deadly risk, or how to identify safe internal rooms away from glass windows during high winds—was entirely absent from classroom lessons.
The realization hit her hard; if students weren't taught these vital skills at school, many would remain dangerously unprepared when the next storm hit. Determined to bridge this critical gap and safeguard her peers, Elise decided that if no one else was going to teach these life-saving lessons, she would have to step up and do it herself.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
That's when Elise took matters into her own hands.
