That year, they would be traveling to China and Japan for an international tour, and she was determined to make the most of it. One of the choir's first performances was at a church about an hour away from campus. But the morning of the show, she woke up late and ended up missing the bus. "I felt the bottom of my stomach just drop out," de Boer remembered. "I was like, 'This is the end of everything.' Because what if they say, 'Well, you're not mature enough to be in this group?' Then the international tour was out, and I was just afraid that my mistake had ruined it." And this was before cellphones. She couldn't call anybody. So she wandered out into the hallway in her dorm, kind of whimpering. That's probably why her neighbor across the hall came out to see what was up. Her name was Pam. Their relationship had been a bit prickly — and a lot of that was on Karen. She had just gotten to college, had new friends, and they were having fun. They would run up and down the halls, knock on doors and run away, making a lot of noise. They didn't particularly think about how that affected others on the same floor. Pam would come to them and ask them to be quiet because she was trying to study or trying to sleep. So Pam was the last person Karen expected to see when she was in trouble. Karen told Pam her whole tale — how she'd messed up and couldn't get to the concert, which was an hour away. Pam told her, "Well, I have a car here at college, and I know where that church is. So I could drive you there." Which to Karen was shocking. Pam had no reason to be kind to her when she had not been kind to Pam. But she extended that to her. They jumped into Pam's car. It was about an hour away, and Pam drove her there the whole way, getting her to the performance just in time. Reflecting back on that day, Karen thinks of her hallmate's gesture as more than just an hour-long car ride. "It was a gift of forgiveness, really — forgiving me for not being nice to her," de Boer said. If de Boer could talk to Pam today, she knows exactly what she would say: "The first thing I would say is, 'I'm sorry. I am sorry for ignoring your requests all those years ago.' And I want to say thank you, because that decision that you made when perhaps I didn't deserve that sort of kindness and you decided to extend it anyway — that has had ripple effects through the next 30 years of my life." I was thirty-four the first time I saw the real Santa. 文中会较多地使用,诸如since(既然),now that(既然),therefore(因而),in that case(在那种情况下),so(所以),It follows that…(因而…),If…,we may conclude that …(如果……,我们可以这样下结论……),Should it be the case (如果是这样的话……),Idon’t want to…,but…(我并不想……),It is true that…,but…(诚然……但是……),Even if …(即使……) 例:若前文是"First, heat the water",后文可能是"Next, add the tea leaves." 因果顺序:空格可能是结果(thus, consequently)或原因(due to, because)。 Every year about 40,000 people attempt to climb Kilimanjaro, the highest As I get older it seems that time is speeding up.
