I was a shy and nervous boy when Mother attempted to give me courage. Among my earliest memories are her words, “Go right up and look your fears in the face — and then do something!” To help me overcome my fear of the dark, Mother invented a game for us to play. She ran around the house in one direction, I in the other. At the far corner, I would run straight into her comforting arms. Soon, I was joyfully facing the dark alone for as long as my parents would let me stay outdoors.
Her lesson of facing fear bravely has stayed with me ever since. I remember clearly my first job of taking pictures for an airline (航空公司) over the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina. We were in a wilderness where clouds hid the highest mountains, driving the pilot to direct the way by guess. Turbulence (湍流) increased by the moment, throwing the plane about like a chip in the sea. It was a struggle just to keep my heavy camera, which I was holding tightly, from flying up and hitting me in the face. But my real worry was the growing fear that we would not get out alive.
Then Mother’s advice came to mind. “Get your work done,” I said seriously to myself. Below us, Lake Lure was occasionally visible, then hiding itself in clouds. Perhaps my pictures would be made unclear beyond recognition by the shaking camera. However, I stretched as far out as my ropes would allow and, for the next several minutes, whenever the plane broke through into a clearing I took a shot. I became so completely lost in the beauty that by the time we flew out of the mountains I was truly sorry we had to go.
At that moment, I fully understood Mother’s words: “Go right up and look your fears in the face — and then do something!” Her timeless wisdom saw me through this dangerous situation.
4. Why did the author recall his childhood experience?
A. To state his fear of dark. B. To show his mother’s wisdom.
C. To establish his mother’s authority. D. To stress his efforts to run fast.
5. What forced the pilot to guess the way?
A. The increasing turbulence. B. The frozen wilderness.
C. The camera hitting the face. D. The clouds covering mountaintops.
6. Why did the author feel sorry when leaving the mountains?
A. He wanted to stay with the pilot longer. B. The weather became too bad.
C. He was deeply attracted by the scenery. D. The mountains became very clear.
7. Which of the following best describes his mother?
A. Brave and strict. B. Wise and inspiring. C. Caring and humorous. D. Confident and outgoing.

It is widely known that sitting for long hours is unhealthy. Scientists say that sitting might not quite be“the new smoking”, but too much of it can still shorten your life.
We spend a lot of time sitting. Numbers of daily sitting hours for Americans vary, but some studies point out it can be as long as nine and a half hours. Studies suggest women sit less than men do, but most agree we all sit more than earlier generations did. Similar things are found around the world, including in Asian countries.
A 13-year study following 480,000 people in Paris found those who sit most of the work day had a 34% higher risk of dying from heart disease than those with less sedentary (久坐) jobs did—and a 16% higher risk of death. The American Heart Association notes that sitting too long raises the risk of developing heart disease, even for those who exercise regularly. Sitting for long periods has also been linked to lower back or knee pain. Studies show that sitting still for more than four hours can weaken leg strength and increase pressure on spinal discs (脊间盘). Besides, sitting burns very little energy. Over time, this inactive lifestyle can reduce your body’s ability to control blood sugar and break down fat, potentially leading to weight gain and raising diabetes (糖尿病) risk. In general, modern workers burn 100 fewer calories daily than 50 years ago. Beyond physical health, sitting also affects mental health. It increases the chances of sad feelings and anxiety.
To reduce the risks of a sedentary lifestyle, the key is to move more often. Make a habit of breaking up long periods of sitting; get up and move for a few minutes every half hour. Aim for at least 30 minutes of active movement every day, like a quick walk, dancing, or playing a sport. Also, small changes help a lot: climb the stairs, walk while talking on the phone, or have walking meetings with friends. By sitting less and moving more, you’ ll increase your energy, improve your feelings, and protect your health for years to come.
8. What can we learn from paragraph 2?
A. People sit less now than in the past. B. Women sit more than men on a daily basis.
C. Americans sit more than Asian people. D. Long-time sitting is a worldwide problem.
9. What’s paragraph 3 mainly about in terms of long-time sitting?
A. The solutions. B. The causes. C. The results. D. The types.
10. What is the key to reducing the risks of long-time sitting?
A. More physical activity and less sitting. B. Exercising for one hour every weekend.
C. Avoiding sitting at work completely. D. More healthy foods to increase energy.
11. What is the author’s purpose of writing the text?
A. To prove that sitting is more harmful than smoking.
B. To explain why people sit for longer hours than before.
C. To warn of long-time sitting’s risks and advise action.
D. To introduce the research findings on sedentary lifestyles.

Instant noodles are a favorite quick meal when people don’t want to cook. Picture eating them while watching TV on a stormy night — pure comfort! But many believe they’re just junk food that harms health. The truth is, whether they’re unhealthy depends entirely on how you prepare them.
The main issue isn’t the noodles themselves, but the common way people make them: pouring boiling water over dried noodles and adding all the salty seasoning packets. These flavor packets contain high levels of salt and artificial additives (人工添加剂), making this version unbalanced and unhealthy.
Actually, plain instant noodles aren’t terrible. They’re fried during production (which adds some oil and calories), but they fill you up well and provide quick energy when you’re hungry. To make them healthier, cook them properly: boil the noodles first, drain excess starchy (含有淀粉的) water, then use fresh water or broth (肉汤). Crucially, use only half the seasoning packet to reduce salt. Add vegetables like spinach or carrots and protein like an egg or tofu while cooking. This boosts vitamins and protein while cutting sodium (钠). This transforms them into a balanced meal!
So, are instant noodles junk food? If prepared lazily with all the seasoning and no extras, yes. But when cooked with less seasoning plus veggies and protein, they become a decent occasional meal. Remember: the secret is variety. Enjoy them once or twice a week as part of a diverse diet, and they won’t harm your health. They’re far less scary than people think — just upgrade your cooking method!
12. What determines if instant noodles are unhealthy?
A. Their quick cooking time. B. The time of eating.
C. The preparation method. D. The junk food label.
13. What is the major cause of unhealthy instant noodles?
A. The dried noodles. B. The flavor packets.
C. Using boiling water. D. People avoiding cooking.
14. What is the main purpose of the third paragraph?
A. Warn about health dangers. B. Give cooking instructions.
C. Argue noodles are harmless. D. List harmful additives.
15. What is the suitable title for the passage?
A. Instant Noodles: Not All Waste. B. Instant Noodles: How to Cook?
C. Instant Noodles: Eat Sometimes. D. Instant Noodles: What we know?

When I was a kid of about twelve years old, I had a lot of freckles (雀斑). I had reached the age when I began to really look at myself in the mirror, and I was upset.
I had a cousin whose name was Janette Elizabeth. She looked exactly like her name sounds. She had perfect skin. I couldn’t help comparing myself with her and thinking that my life would be a lot different if I had beautiful skin too.
And then, in the back pages of Elizabeth’s magazine, I found the answer: an advertisement for freckle-remover cream. I knew that I could afford it if I saved my money, and I did. The ad assured me that the product would arrive in the mail soon. For three weeks I went to the mailbox every day. I knew that if someone else in my family got the mail, I would never hear the end of it. There was no way that they would let me open the box in private.
Three weeks later, my package finally came. I went to my room with it, sat on the edge of my bed, and opened it. I was sure that I was looking at something that would make me beautiful. When I got up the next morning, I applied the cream all over my face. Then I took my hoe (锄头)and went with my brother and cousins to hoe the field, where I got rid of some tiger lilies (虎皮百合), seemingly ugly with black and small spots.
The sun was so strong that my face started to burn. By the end of the day, when I came back to the house, my family, knowing nothing about the freckle-remover cream, began to say things like, “I’ve never seen you with that many freckles before.” When I saw myself in the mirror, I burst into tears and hid in the bathroom.
47. What did the girl do, and how did it turn out?
_________________________________________________________________________________
48. What do the tiger lilies and the girl have in common?

C
D 9. C 10. A 11. C

根据第三段中“A 13-year study following 480,000 people in Paris found those who sit most of the work day had a 34% higher risk of dying from heart disease than those with less sedentary (久坐) jobs did—and a 16% higher risk of death. (一项针对巴黎 48 万人进行的长达 13 年的研究发现,那些在工作日大部分时间都坐着的人,死于心脏病的风险比那些工作时较少久坐的人高出 34%——而且他们的死亡风险还要高出 16%。)”以及“Sitting for long periods has also been linked to lower back or knee pain. (久坐也与腰痛或膝盖疼痛有关。)”以及“Besides, sitting burns very little energy. Over time, this inactive lifestyle can reduce your body’s ability to control blood sugar and break down fat, potentially leading to weight gain and raising diabetes (糖尿病) risk. (此外,久坐不动消耗的能量极少。长期保持这种不活跃的生活方式会降低身体控制血糖和分解脂肪的能力,从而可能导致体重增加,并增加患糖尿病的风险。)”可知,该段主要讲述了长时间坐着对健康的各种不良影响。故选C项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章最后一段中的“To reduce the risks of a sedentary lifestyle, the key is to move more often. Make a habit of breaking up long periods of sitting; get up and move for a few minutes every half hour.(为了减少久坐生活方式的风险,关键是多运动,养成打破长时间坐着的习惯,每半小时起来活动几分钟。)” 故选A项。
C选项“To warn of long-time sitting’s risks and advise action.(警告长时间久坐的风险并提出建议。)”
D
C 13. B 14. B 15. A
根据第一段“The truth is, whether they’re unhealthy depends entirely on how you prepare them.(事实上,它们是否不健康完全取决于你如何准备)”可知,食用方法决定了方便面是否不健康。
根据第二段“These flavor packets contain high levels of salt and artificial additives (人工添加剂), making this version unbalanced and unhealthy.(这些调味包含有高盐量和人工添加剂,导致该版本营养失衡且不健康)”可知,不健康方便面的主要成因是调味包中过量的钠盐与人工合成添加剂。
This transforms them into a balanced meal!(实际上,普通的方便面并不算太糟糕。

_________________________________________________________________________________
49. How did the girl feel when she hid in the bathroom?
__________________________________________________________________________________
50. What kind of girl is she? Give evidence from the passage.
__________________________________________________________________________________
51. What might the girl learn from this experience?
___________________________________________________________________________________
47. She bought a freckle-remover cream, but the strong sun made her freckles worse.
48. Both have small dark spots.
49. She felt ashamed and disappointed, and wanted to be alone.
50. She is sensitive because she compared herself with her cousin and felt upset.
51. She might learn to accept herself, freckles and all, and stop comparing.
根据第三段中的“And then, in the back pages of Elizabeth’s magazine, I found the answer: an advertisement for freckle-remover cream. I knew that I could afford it if I saved my money, and I did.(然后,在伊丽莎白的杂志的后页,我找到了答案:一则祛斑霜广告。我知道如果我存钱,我就能买得起它,我也这样做了)”以及第五段中的“The sun was so strong that my face started to burn. By the end of the day, when I came back to the house, my family, knowing nothing about the freckle-remover cream, began to say things like, “I’ve never seen you with that many freckles before.”(阳光十分强烈,我的脸开始灼烧。当天结束,我回到家时,我的家人对祛斑霜一无所知,开始说类似这样的话:“我从没见过你有这么多雀斑。”)”可知,女孩买了祛斑霜,强烈的阳光让她的雀斑变得更严重。
【48题详解】
考查推理判断。根据第四段中的“Then I took my hoe (锄头) and went with my brother and cousins to hoe the field, where I got rid of some tiger lilies (虎皮百合), seemingly ugly with black and small spots.(然后我拿起锄头,和我的兄弟、表亲们去田里锄地,在田里我除掉了一些虎皮百合,它们长着小小的黑色斑点,看起来很难看)”以及第一段 “When I was a kid of about twelve years old, I had a lot of freckles (雀斑).(当我大约十二岁的时候,我有很多雀斑)”可知,虎皮百合和女孩的共同点是二者都带有小小的深色斑点。
根据第五段中的“When I saw myself in the mirror, I burst into tears and hid in the bathroom.(当我在镜子里看见自己,我突然大哭起来,躲进了卫生间)”,结合前文她本想去掉雀斑、变漂亮的期待落空可知,她感到羞愧、失望,想要独处。
根据第二段中的“I couldn’t help comparing myself with her and thinking that my life would be a lot different if I had beautiful skin too.(我忍不住拿自己和她比较,想着如果我也有好看的皮肤,我的生活会大不一样)”和第一段“I had reached the age when I began to really look at myself in the mirror, and I was upset.(我到了会认真对着镜子打量自己的年纪,并且我很难过)”可知,女孩很敏感,会和表姐对比并感到难过。
