拓展提高(课内同源 + 课外同源)
Passage1(课内同源:标签是一张地图)
A nutrition label is a small table with large numbers, and it is designed to be read in ten seconds. / The first thing to find is the serving size. It is usually at the top, and it is where most mistakes happen. A packet of crisps may say “120 kilocalories” in large print, but the small print says “per 25-gram serving”, and the packet holds four servings. The whole packet is 480. / The second thing is the order of the ingredients. They are listed from heaviest to lightest. If sugar, syrup or fruit juice is among the first three, the product is mostly sugar, whatever the front of the packet says. / The third thing is the part nobody reads: the small print at the bottom, which explains what a “reference intake” is. It is an average for an adult, not a rule for a child. / “A label is not a police officer,” our teacher says. “It is a map. It tells you where you are. It does not tell you where to go.”

Passage2(课外同源:辣不是味道)
Humans can taste five things: sweet, sour, salty, bitter and umami. Everything else that we call a “taste” is actually a feeling. / Chilli is the clearest example. The hotness of a chilli is not a taste; it is pain. A chemical called capsaicin fits into a receptor on the tongue that normally warns the brain about heat. The brain receives the warning and responds as if the mouth were on fire: the heart beats faster, the face goes red, and the body sweats. Nothing is actually burning. / Mint works in the opposite way. Menthol fits a receptor that senses cold, so a mint sweet makes the mouth feel cool although its temperature has not changed. / This is why a hot curry and a cold drink do not cancel each other. The curry is a false alarm about heat, and the drink is a real drop in temperature; the brain can tell the difference. / Some people love this confusion and some hate it. Both are right. The sensation is not in the food; it is in the nervous system that meets it.
任务一:单项选择
1.How many basic tastes can humans taste?
A.Five. B.Three. C.Seven. D.Two.
2.What does capsaicin do?
A.It fits a receptor that normally warns the brain about heat. B.It burns the tongue. C.It makes food taste sweet. D.It cools the mouth.
任务二:判断正误(T/F)

任务四范文:Most people read the front of a packet, and the front is advertising. A label should be read in three steps. First, find the serving size, because every number below it depends on it. A packet that says 120 kilocalories may hold four servings, which makes 480. Second, look at the ingredient list: ingredients are listed from heaviest to lightest, so if sugar is first, the product is mostly sugar. Third, check whether the numbers are per 100 grams or per serving, because “per 100 grams” is the only fair way to compare two packets. The common misunderstanding is that “full of energy” means healthy. It only means there are calories inside.
