Different countries remember their great people in different ways, but the purpose is the same: to keep a story alive. / In the United States, the Lincoln Memorial stands at one end of a long pool in Washington. Inside, a huge statue of Abraham Lincoln sits in a chair, and words from his speeches are cut into the walls. Millions of visitors come every year. / In Britain, many houses carry a small blue plaque. It tells passers-by that a writer, a scientist or a musician once lived there. The plaques are simple, but they turn ordinary streets into a map of history. / In China, great people are remembered in many ways: museums, statues, names of schools and streets, and special days. After Yuan Longping died in 2021, people in Changsha laid rice ears outside his office, because rice was the language he understood best. / Memory, of course, can also be quiet. In this way the story is passed down from year to year. The monument is not beautiful, but it is the most important stone in our town. It reminds us that a good life can be very quiet.
