For Pu Bingmei, what began as love for the sea has transformed into a lifelong mission: preserving ocean cleanliness, rescuing stranded (搁浅的) whales, and awakening public responsibility.
Growing up in arid Northwest China, the 39-year-old always harbored a longing for the sea. Arriving in Sanya for college in 2007, she recalls crystal-clear water with fish gliding beneath. However, frequent seaside visits exposed a grim reality: certain bays emitted smelly odors, with piled garbage and dark sand. Resolved to remedy the situation, she initiated weekly volunteer cleanups — a commitment that became her full-time devotion to the Blue Ribbon Ocean Conservation Association.
The association, initially fewer than 10 members, operated on a simple belief: the more litter removed from beaches, the less would reach the ocean. Through systematic monitoring, they identified insufficient trash bins and infrequent collection, offering advice to local authorities.
Recognizing the unsustainability of fishing, Pu drew on her tourism management background to chart a new course. She persuaded villagers to abandon fine-mesh nets and cut fishing fleet, introducing wellness tourism. This drove an economic shift, creating over 200 home-stays and local jobs, curbing out-migration.
For Pu, marine conservation extends beach cleaning to saving marine mammals. Rescuing stranded whales is daunting: their bodies are built for water, and land pressure harms them. Improper handling causes secondary injuries. The team taught fishermen proper practices — never pushing stranded animals back — and trained firefighters and divers with rescue kits.
What strikes her most, however, is the surge in public ecological awareness. Whereas people once joined for small gifts;they now participate out of genuine initiative. In 2024, she led China’s first successful rescue of a short-finned pilot whale, with over 100 volunteers holding it upright around the clock to prevent drowning.
“The oceans are connected,” Pu says. “From picking up trash to inspiring action, concrete deeds and global cooperation truly make a difference.”
1. What motivated Pu to start weekly cleanups?
A. Her lifelong love for the ocean.
B. The awful coastal conditions.
C. The option to join an association.
D. Her college education in Sanya.
2. What efforts has Pu made to save the ocean?
A. Rescuing endangered wildlife.
B. Training professional rescuers only.
C. Advocating sustainable tourism.
D. Resolving the environmental crisis.
3. Why does the author mention the 2024 whale rescue?
A. To report a rare ocean event.
B. To celebrate the combined efforts.
C. To introduce a new rescue method.
D. To show rising public eco-awareness.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The mission of the Blue Ribbon
B. From Sea Lover to Ocean Guardian
C. Tourism Development in Sanya
D. A Volunteer Organization's Growth

Science has yet to discover a way to prevent volcanic eruptions, so the early warning signs of volcanic activity are key to keeping people safe. One of the earliest signs that a volcano is becoming active is the presence of carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions (散发). However, because there is already plenty of carbon dioxide present in the air at any given moment, it makes it difficult for scientists to discover whether or not there has been a volcano-related increase in the atmosphere.
Before now, those monitoring volcanoes would have to visit the volcanoes directly in order to measure the output of carbon dioxide. This method of detection is often dangerous, as volcanoes are awfully located in remote areas with difficult land shapes.
But how can trees help indicate this increase in carbon dioxide in an easily observable manner? When a volcano begins to prepare for an eruption, the movement of magma (岩浆) through Earth’s crust releases carbon dioxide and other gases. As these gases make their way to the surface, trees slurp up the carbon dioxide and their leaves become greener than before.
Thankfully, these changes in tree leaves are easily visible from space. So, by using NASA satellite technology to monitor these observed changes, scientists can be alerted to incoming volcanic activity sooner than other methods like earthquake activity and changes on the ground.
“Our research is a two-way interdisciplinary intersection between ecology and volcanology,” said Josh Fisher, climate scientist at Chapman University. “We’re interested not only in tree responses to volcanic carbon dioxide as an early warning of eruption, but also in how much the trees are able to take up, as a window into the future of the Earth when all the Earth’s trees are exposed to high levels of carbon dioxide.”
This collaborative study is the first time changes in tree leaf color have been positively correlated to magma-generated carbon dioxide. The method isn’t guaranteed to work every time, however, as factors such as climate and weather conditions determine whether the area surrounding a volcano is suitable for satellite monitoring.
1. What made it challenging for the scientists to monitor volcanoes earlier?
A. The inaccessibility of volcanoes.
B. The lack of a warning system.
C. The insufficiency of carbon dioxide.
D. The poison from volcano eruption.
2. What does the underlined part “slurp up” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Mix up.
B. Keep off.
C. Take in.
D. Settle into.
3. What does Josh Fisher aim to find out through their research?
A. The frequency of volcanic eruption.
B. The tree species most resistant to high CO₂.
C. The way to combine ecology with volcanology.
D. The condition of future Earth with high CO₂.
4. What’s stressed about the new method in the last paragraph?
A. It’s premature.
B. It has limitations.
C. It’s complicated.
D. It has high costs.

根据短文内容,从选项中选出最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Buying green bananas, or any unripe fruit for that matter, is a test of faith. ____1____ But sometimes, when you buy green bananas from the store, they simply refuse to turn, no matter how long you wait. So what should you do?
Placing your bananas in a paper bag for a day or two to help the process along is the first trick to try. ____2____ Putting the fruit in a paper bag traps the gas near the fruit, causing it to ripen faster.
But what if your bananas never turn into their ripe yellow color? ____3____ Not really. As it turns out, green bananas may be healthier than yellow bananas. That is because the green versions contain more resistant starch (淀粉) and take longer to digest than their yellow counterparts, leaving you fuller for longer. That starch turns to sugar as the banana ripens. ____4____
So, while you may have to put more effort into enjoying a green banana than a ripe yellow one, there’s plenty to do with the green fruit you have lying around. Here are things you can do with bananas that won’t turn.
If you want to try a new dish using green bananas, slice them into fries as you would do with potatoes or sweet potatoes, and then fry them. ____5____ If you have a strong blender (搅拌机), you can take those green bananas and throw them into your morning smoothie. You won’t even be able to taste green bananas, and you’ll still get all the health benefits.
Whichever route you go, take comfort in knowing that you won’t throw away those green bananas, and you may even buy them on purpose next time.
A. Are they a lost cause?
B. Is eating green bananas normal?
C. When fruit ripens, it gives off a gas.
D. Now you’ve got an addictive, delicious treat.
E. You assume that they’ll soon ripen and be perfect to eat.
F. You’ll want to prepare boiled green bananas with the skin on.
G. So green bananas are preferred by whoever limits sugar intake.

【答案】
1. A
2. C
3. D
4. B
