In many Chinese cities, primary and middle schools have made class breaks longer from 10 to 15 minutes since the fall semester (学期) started. The governments (政府) want students and teachers to do more outdoor activities.

Now, local education departments (部门) are trying to make school schedules better. They want students to have at least 30 minutes of exercise every day.
In Beijing, primary schools’ morning and afternoon times haven’t changed. Middle schools end five minutes later.
In Wuxi, Jiangsu, schools have 15-minute breaks and one PE class every day. Students must do at least 100 minutes of exercise at school. The education officer said this helps students play outside and talk to each other. They want to give break time back to students.
A Qingdao primary school has many outdoor games like jump rope and hula hoop, and indoor puzzles during 15-minute breaks. In May, a fitness test showed that 47 percent of Qingdao students got “excellent” or “good” fitness grades, 10 percent more than before.

Reading a good book is a wonderful journey because the reader can live in someone else’s world for a while. Reading together with others, known as Buddy Reading, will make this journey even more fantastic. During the journey, the buddies spend time doing a lot of reading activities. This not only adds to the pleasure of reading, but also deepens(加深)their understanding of the books.
Although it is all right to have students join in Buddy Reading with same-aged schoolmates, schools usually pair up older students with younger ones. In 2021, Green School started such a programme and has achieved a great success.
Both younger and older readers in this school learnt a lot from this two-year programme. For example, when they listened to each other, they learned to be kind and careful. This activity also provided them with a chance to practise lifelong skills such as exercising leadership or getting on well with others. A student called Jason said that reading to a younger buddy was really helpful. He became more confident, as he knew he was a role model for someone.
The school also became a closer community. The reading buddies felt closer as they often met each other. The students were always excited when they saw their buddies pass by in the hallway. Now the National Day holiday is coming. It’s a great time to get into books. Why not pair up with a friend, choose a book you both like and read it together?

On a cold, windy night, a policeman patrolled (巡逻) the quiet street. Near a closed hardware store, he saw a man standing in the doorway, smoking a cigar. The man greeted the officer politely and started a conversation.

We promised to meet right here at the same time, twenty years later—no matter what happened.” He pulled out a shiny gold watch and checked the time: three to ten.
The policeman nodded and left. Soon after, a tall man in a long overcoat hurried over. “Is that you, Bob?” he asked. “Jimmy!” Bob cried, shaking his old friend’s hands. They walked down the street, chatting happily about the past.
Suddenly, the tall man stopped. “You’re under arrest (逮捕), Bob. Chicago police want you,” he said, handing Bob a note. Bob unfolded it and read: “I was at the meeting place on time. Students come to school to study. But studying requires the right way, or we may waste time or money. Here are some useful ways to study.
The best time to read is in the morning, because the air is fresh and the mind is clear. For that reason, we can get good results. In studying, we must have patience (耐心). If we do not understand a text well, we must read it again. We should not move on to the next text until we understand the first one. If we do not understand something, we should write it down and ask our teachers, parents or friends. We should try every possible way to understand it better and use what we have learned.
The ways above will be helpful if we keep them in mind and put them into practice.
1.What does studying require?

It is important to have good learning habits if you want to study, and this is especially true when it comes to online learning.
Online learning is a process (过程) different from what you will find in a traditional school. The learning environment and methods are different.
When studying in a classroom, there is a lot of communication (沟通) between the students and the teacher, but little interaction (互动) among the students, while online learning helps one student and another to interact very seriously and closely. So one of the online teacher’s roles is to encourage students to interact. Another is to guide the discussion, but not to take total control of students’ thoughts as teachers do in a classroom.
So what are the good learning habits you should have in online learning? Here are some good suggestions. First, it is a good idea to prepare well for online learning. You can write down daily tasks and even weekly tasks that you want to complete. By doing so, you will have a good plan for achieving your goals. Second, you should spend as much time online as if you were going to regular courses. Also, always try to set aside (留出) extra time to communicate with other students.
Besides this, any post you put up online shows who you are. So make sure that you spell every word and write every sentence correctly. Last, hand in your homework on time so that you don’t fall behind.
1.What is important if you want to study online?
2.What are teachers’ roles in online learning?
3.Do you think online learning is good? Why or why not?
【答案】1.Having good learning habits. 2.To encourage interaction and guide discussion. 3.Yes, because it helps students interact closely.

Gardening as part of the school curriculum (课程) began in the United States in the early 1900s and school gardening has become very popular during these years. Parents and teachers say these hands-on lessons can be used to teach many subjects.
Susan Hobart is a school teacher at Lake View Elementary School in Madison. She and her students look after the school’s large garden with 12 raised beds. “Gardening is a great way to get kids outside with a purpose. With the school gardens, kids can see a beginning, a middle and an end to their project. If they just sat at desks, they wouldn’t have this experience,” Hobart says. She adds that the gardens help calm the kids and give them a different viewpoint on soil and food.
“If we had to buy the seedlings, they’d cost $3 each and we could never afford that,” Hobart says. “But there are plenty of creative ways to find help. We find seeds and seedlings from local botanical gardens (植物园) and our communities.” Each spring, the school’s children plant seeds and seedlings in the garden. Over the summer, teachers and young children take care of the garden together.
Hobart says that gardens do not have to take up a large area outdoors. For schools without space for even a small garden, turning to local botanical gardens and parks can sometimes be a good choice.
In the school garden, teachers can teach students how to grow food and flowers. They can also teach science, social studies and even art there. “Giving kids the opportunity to move outside and find worms—especially if their teachers are excited about it— is important,” Hobart says.
“Having a garden in a school is just as important as any other education,” Hobart says. “The act of gardening teaches you where food comes from and teaches you to have a feeling of great respect for soil. If kids have a reverence (尊敬) for soil, it’s a life skill. I see this as one of the most valuable lessons of humanity.”

Not following safety tips
DIY mistakes can be costly and dangerous. Of the survey respondents (调查对象) who once made a big mistake during their DIY projects, half of them said that the mistake can be very terrible, while 44% started a fire or fell off a ladder (梯子). Take your time and follow all safety tips when using tools. Wearing dust masks, safety glasses, hearing protection devices or gloves can keep you away from danger.
Using the wrong tools
A quarter of people used the wrong tools for a DIY project, which could make the job more difficult and less safe. Many tools are for special uses and materials, so if you use them for other tasks, it is easier for you to get hurt. Always use the right tools for each project, and make sure you know the way to use them.
Skipping (跳过) important steps

In many Chinese cities, primary and middle schools have made class breaks longer from 10 to 15 minutes since the fall semester (学期) started. The governments (政府) want students and teachers to do more outdoor activities.
Before, Chinese schools usually had 10-minute breaks. But it was not enough time for students, especially those in tall buildings, to go outside and play. Sometimes, schools didn’t let students leave the classroom during breaks because they worried about safety.

1.Why didn’t schools let students leave the classroom during breaks before?
2.In which city do the middle schools end five minutes later?

Hi David,
I’m John and I’m 14 years old. I’m in the 8th grade at Rocky Mountain High School near Denver.
Our school has many sports activities. I play American football after school. I’m in the school team. It is fun and keeps me fit. However, my favourite part is the Model Club. This club teaches me hands-on skills, and these are very useful. I like to build model planes. It takes a lot of time and patience. After I finish, I like to paint them in cool colours.
Reading is very important at my school. Every month, our teacher gives us a reading task. Everyone in class reads a different book and then we write about it and share our reports together.
What is your school like, David? Do you have any interesting after-school activities? I hope to hear from you soon.
Yours,
John

1.What is Buddy Reading?
2.Who do schools usually pair up older buddies with?
3.How long was the reading programme in Green School?
4.Why did Jason think the programme was helpful?

On a cold, windy night, a policeman patrolled (巡逻) the quiet street. Near a closed hardware store, he saw a man standing in the doorway, smoking a cigar. The man greeted the officer politely and started a conversation.
“Twenty years ago tonight, I had dinner here with my best friend, Jimmy Wells,” he said. “I was leaving for the West to make a fortune the next day.
When I lit your cigar, I saw you were the wanted man. I couldn’t arrest my old friend, so I asked a plain-clothes officer to do it. —Jimmy Wells.”

When we are studying, we must focus on what we are reading, or we can get nothing from the book while we are reading. We should always ask “why”. If we do not understand something, we should write it down and ask our teachers, parents or friends. We should try every possible way to understand it better and use what we have learned.
The ways above will be helpful if we keep them in mind and put them into practice.
1.What does studying require?
2.Why should we read in the morning?
3.What must we have when studying?
4.Why should we keep asking “why” when studying?
5.Which way will you use in your study? How?

I am a Canadian girl. I started learning French when I was 10 years old. But all my experiences with the language were in the classroom. When I was 17, I flew across the country by myself for the first time!I headed for Quebec to live with a French-speaking host family, who didn’t speak any English. And I would learn French at a local school.
On the first day of school, the local school gave us students a test to determine (测定) our language level. We needed to only speak French all summer.
I made every effort to communicate (交流) in a second language by making new friends, seeing movies and even ordering food from restaurants in French. Though I couldn’t understand most of it at the very beginning, the experience was exciting and refreshing.
On weekends, my classmates and I took trips to different places around the province. On one trip, we went whale watching on the St Lawrence River Even though it was raining, we could see huge whales swimming around our boat. The most wonderful part of our trip was a visit to Old Quebec. I walked along the stone street, took pictures of the European-style buildings, and learned some stories there.
At the end of the summer, I was able to communicate pretty well. I couldn’t wait to go back to school and talk with my French teacher. Being lost in a French-speaking environment was a valuable learning experience. And it could be the main reason for my improvement in French.
1.When did the writer start learning French?
2.How did the local school determine the students’ language level?
3.Where did the writer take trips on weekends?
4.What did the writer think of the visit to Old Quebec?
5.What kind of girl is the writer? (At least 2 points)

1.Where do the students at Lake View Elementary School find seeds and seedlings?
2.What can schools do without garden space?
3.What do you think of doing gardening in your school? Why?
Do-it-yourself projects let you design your house and help you spend less money. But DIY doesn't always go according to plan. Nearly 80% of homeowners make a mistake during DIY. Here are three of the biggest mistakes that homeowners often make.
Skipping an important step may make all the DIY work wrong. In the survey, 47% of people said that they finished a DIY project before knowing it was done wrong. Read all instructions carefully first, and make sure you have skills to complete each step before you begin.
1.Why do some people choose to do DIY projects?
2.Is following safety tips important during DIY? Why or why not?
3.What problem can using the wrong tools cause in a DIY project?
4.What percentage of people finished a DIY project without knowing it was done wrong?
5.What is the main purpose of the passage?
