When I was 10,I was caught in a lie.I stubbornly denied breaking a window in my neighbor's barn,
but my parents knew I had done it.In those days,a broken window was a big deal, and I was close to
miserable.
Then Uncle Jim arrived. He never raised his voice or rushed.Riding beside him in his old green car,I
kept glancing at him nervously.I could see a confused smile at the corner of his mouth."Teling the truth is
always easier."he said out of the blue.He grinned at me."So it's perfect for a lazybone like you and me."
That was it-一no lecturing,.no scolding. My uncle began to hum(哼歌),and I was awash in relief.
Not long after,I spotted a pair of brown leather gloves on the windowsill in the post office.Old Mrs
Jameson had come in wearing them and left barehanded.I tried them on.They were perfect. That night,my
conscience troubled me.The truth is easier for a lazybones. The next day,I returned the gloves.A month
later,Mrs Jameson sent me a new pair with a note of thanks. When Uncle Jim asked where I got them,I told
him the story."See?"he said,delighted.
Uncle Jim taught me far more than that. One August day,we were fishing in a small boat.I was a bit
down at our slow pace.He said.speed was fine if you wanted to go fast, but slowing down made any journey
less of a blur."It helps you toeus,"he said.I thought of that decades later when he was dying,in his 82nd
year. Was he seeing more, even as he slowed?Uncle Jim was an observer who touched those he loved by
sharing what he saw. Some things I understood quickly, but others took decades to become clear.
Be honest,be brave, look around and slow down-the words were never spoken, but the message
always got through.
4.How did Uncle Jim react to the author's lie?
A.He let the lie slide.
B.He offered mild guidance
C.He delivered a long lecture.
D.He gave a severe punishment.
5.Why did Mrs Jameson send the author a new pair of gloves?
A.She knew he was fond of gloves.
B.She had extra gloves to give away.
C.Her old gloves no longer fitted her.
D.She intended to reward his honesty.
Mnat does the underlined phrase"less of a blur"in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Less boring.
B.Less risky.
C.More exciting.
D.More apparent.
7.What is the main message of the passage?
A.Truth does not need to be spoken.
B.The elder always give wise advice.
C.Honesty and patience matter in life.
D.Mistakes are unavoidable for children.

For humans, the sound of rain is often calming, but for plants,it works like an alarm clock. When
raindrops hit the ground or water, the vibrations below the surface are much stronger than those above.New
research suggests that plants have learned to use this signal to their advantage.
A study in Scientific Reports shows that rice seeds sprout (faster when they are exposed to the
sound of rain. The researchers say this is the first direct evidence that plants can sense and respond to sound.
They believe seeds from other plants may behave the same way.
Nicholas Makris, the lead researcher from MIT,calls this effect "unusual and odd."He says such a
discovery could only be made by scientists working across various disciplines-acoustics and plant biology.
For years, scientists have wondered how much plants can sense in the world around them. Some studies
suggest plants might even"see"or"think,"but few have shown a direct link between a specific event and
the plant's immediate reaction. This new study focuses on the connection between sound and sprouting.
In plants, cellular structures called statoliths are responsible for external sensing.Shifting at the bottom
of these structures is starch ()which helps plants to detect changes in their position and tell seeds in
which direction to grow their roots. The researchers theorized that rain sounds underwater could shake these
statoliths enough to speed up sprouting in rice seeds.
The scientists exposed about 8.000 rice seeds in water-their preferred growing condition-to rain
sounds.Another group of seeds was kept in quiet conditions, with everything else the same. The results were
striking:the seeds that"heard"rain sprouted 30 to 40 percentfaster than seeds that were kept in quiet but
otherwise similar conditions.
Heidi Appel,a biologist not involved in the study, says this is an important step forward. She praises it
as the first work to carefully measure how raindrops'vibrations affect seeds in a realistic way.The
researchers hope their finding will encourage other scientists to explore how plants respond to natural
sounds like wind or insect noises. This study not only deepens our knowledge of plants but also opens new
doors tor understanding how they interact with their environment.
8 What does the Scientific Reports study confirm?
A.Most plant seeds are sensitive to rainfall.
B.Rain sounds can speed rice seeds'sprouting.
C.Plants send out signals to sense raindrops.
D.Rice seeds favour vibrations below the surface.
9.What can we infer from the third paragraph?
A.The research on plants'hearing has a long history.
B.That plants can“see”or“think”has been well proved.
C.The discovery requires ioint efforts from different fields.
D.Scientists have denied plants'immediate reaction to events.
10.Which statement is true about statoliths and the experiment?
A.Statoliths are produced when seeds hear raindrops.
B.The experiment discovered plants sprouted faster in quiet conditions.
C.Statoliths are responsible for internal sensing.
D.The experiment has revealed amazing findings.
试卷第3页(共8页)
11 It can be expected that follow-up studies will
A.cover more varieties of natural sounds for plant-response tests
B.deepen research into how rainfall affectsthe growth of various plants
C.clarify how statoliths sense external changes inside plant cells
D.focus on increasing the seeds'sprouting speed through sound stimulation
D
AI systems are often described as"brain-like"because they can predict activity in parts of the brain
that help us recognize objects.Until now, scientists mostly tested this in one direction.Researchers from
York University wanted to determine whether these systems truly operate like biological vision.
The researchers reversed (that familiar test.If AI genuinely reflects the brain, they reasoned,
then recorded brain activity should also predict the model's internal responses.
The researchers tested the models with 1,320 natural photographs and realistic synthetic (
images. The set included bears, elephants, faces, apples, cars, dogs, chairs, planes, birds, and zebras shown
against indoor, outdoor, and other natural backgrounds. They also used 300 additional images describing the
same objects in changed forms, including outlines, drawings, simplified representations, and artistic
variations. This broader range helped test whether the relationship betvreen brain activity and AI features
held across different visual styles.
"The results were striking. While AI models can predict the neuron werecorded inthe brain
fairly well, the reverse is not true.Interestingly, this is not the case when neurons from one brain are
compared against ones from another brain, and the one-sided imbalance disappears,"says York University
Assistant Professor Kohitij Kar.
This imbalance suggests that AI models may reach correct visual answers through processes that differ
from those used by the brain.Kar warns that the mismatch could widen as models become miore complex. If
an Al model predicts neurons but its own internal features cannot be predicted from neural activity,it may
not provide a reliable explanation of how the brain works.
Researchers increasingly use AI models to design studies of human behavior, including clinical
research.Much of that work assumes the systems process the world like the brain.
More accurate brain-like models could eventually support research involving conditions related to the
brain. For now, however, using systems that do not match brain function well to interpret human behavior
carries risks.Comparable models are also being applied to hearing, language and movement, making
reliable testing important across several fields.
12 What did most previous studies focus on concerning AI models?
A.How the brain genuinely reflected them.B.How they were integrated into the brain
C.Whether they could predict brain activity.D.Whether they took control of the neurons.
13 What does the brain fail to do in the reverse test?
A.Recognize objects in natural photographs.B.Process visual information like AI models.
C.Forecast neurons from another similar brain.D.Equally predict AI models'internal features.
14 Why is clinical research mentioned in paragraph 6?
A.To doubt the reliability of current Al models.
试卷第4页(共8页)
B.To highlight the significance of the reverse test.
C.To sing high praises for technological advances.
D.To prove the similarity between AI and the brain.
15.What can be a suitable.title
A.ANovel Test on Advanced AI Models

Why are there penguins living outdoor in summer?
The OZEANEUM in northern Germany has a rocky pool on its rooftop.Every now and then,a fluffy
brown-and-white head comes out from one of the artificial nesting caves-a penguin.
I had to look twice.16 Yet these birds appeared perfectly comfortable. For a moment,I
wondered if my eyes were playing tricks on me.Had someone forgotten to tell them they belong in
Antarctica? No.These are Humboldt penguins, one of the few species that naturally live in warm regions of
South
I had always associated penguins with snow and ice.17 The Humboldt penguin is native to
the coastal area from Peru to central Chile. Some groups even live surprisingly close to the equator. The
species was named after Alexander von Humboldt, who first observed them on his expedition.Unlike their
Antarctic relatives,Humboldt penguins have spent millions of years adapting to warmer environments.
Their feathers are lighter, and they have bare pink skin around their eyes for cooling They also Have a
slimmer body shape to release heat more efficiently.18
Yet even these adaptations cannot fully explain their success near the tropics.19 During his
expedition,Humboldt found coastal waters unexpectedly cold and identified a vast current from Antarctica.
Today known as the Humboldt Current,it cools the sea and the air above it,creating a mild coastal climate.
20 Cold water rising from the deep carries rich nutrients to the surface, feeding huge fish
populations and providing a reliable food source for the penguins. That's why Humboldt penguins deserve
the name:without the Humboldt Current, they wonld almost not exist.
A.The answer lies in the Humboldt Current.
B.Butnature as it often does, had another story to tell.
C.All these physical adaptations help them cope with the heat.
D.It waslate July and the rooftop was baking under direct sunshine.
B.This explains why they are found along the coasts of South America.
F.However, penguins actually prefer a much warmer place than we think
G.More importantly, the current supports one of the richest ocean ecosystems.
