The day I walked into Westfield High School, I felt everyone in the hallway somehow knew I was the new kid. Three weeks earlier my family moved across the country after my mom changed jobs. 1 a new school in the middle of the term felt like hitting reset on my whole life.
At lunch that first day, I ate at a corner table pretending to be very interested in my phone while 2 searching for “how to survive being the new kid”. Teen articles kept saying the same thing—feeling worried during a school transition (过渡期) is normal. That helped a little, but it still felt 3 .
The first week felt hard—I got lost looking for the chemistry class, mispronounced a teacher’s name, and accidentally walked into the wrong classroom twice. But something small started to 4 when a boy asked if I wanted to join his group in the science lab. That made the whole day easier. It was such a small moment, but it brought me a little 5 . One thing I learned quickly is that most students don’t 6 you as much as you think. Everyone is busy worrying about their own things.
Slowly, I found a way to 7 . Instead of trying to do many big things right away, I focused on simple things, like learning two classmates’ names a week and asking one question in a class. I didn’t expect these tiny efforts would make such a big 8 . Those small wins slowly built up my confidence.
By the end of the term, things looked very different. I joined the photography club and started hanging out with my classmates after school. Changing schools in the middle of the term was not 9 , but it taught me something important about resilience (适应力) and 10 . Feeling uneasy does not last forever. If you are the new kid right now, hang in there. The hallway that feels strange today may become the place where you begin your new stage of life.

空后a new school in the middle of the term“学期中途的一所新学校”,结合前文作者转学成为新生的背景,Starting“开始”符合语境。

Everyone is busy worrying about their own things.“每个人都忙着操心自己的事”,说明别人没有一直盯着你、评价你的举动,judge“评判”符合语境。
show up“露面”、stand out“脱颖而出”、come back“回来”,均和适应新集体的目标不符。

Whales might have their own fashion trends, just like people. Recently whale watchers and researchers saw something last 1 in the 1980s — whales balancing a dead salmon on their heads like hats.
Last October, a photographer took a picture of a 33-year-old male whale called J27, also known as “Blackberry”, with a salmon on its head.
Blackberry is part of a group called the Southern Resident Killer Whales, which live off the coast of the Pacific Northwest. Researcher Deborah Giles 2 saw another whale from the same group doing the same thing.
This 3 some scientists of 1987, when a female whale wore a salmon on her head.
Other whales in her group and nearby groups 4 her, making it a short-lived fashion. Within a year, the behavior disappeared.
Andrew Foote, a researcher at the University of Oslo, suggested that some whales which saw this behaviour in 1987 may be 5 . However, not all scientists 6 . Monika Wieland from the Whale Behavior Institute said that one 7 is not enough to prove this is a real fashion again.
Why do whales carry salmon on their heads? Scientists still don’t know. One idea is that when food is easy to find, whales keep a(n) 8 fish as a snack. Another thought is that the behavior could be a way to 9 attention from a mate (配偶) when they want a baby, or just a playful act. Modern technology, such as drones (无人机), may help researchers find out more by 10 whales and watching what they do with the fish.

二、阅读理解
Bruce Richmond is the favourite English teacher of the Year 2023 in Maple High School. Hundreds of students join his month-long free online writing lessons. Besides reading Shakespeare’s plays, he enjoys helping his students learn how to write. Now he is answering his students’ questions in the weekly Q&A section online and offering them some suggestions.
How can I make readers understand the characters quickly?
[Tip 1] Use clever names. Well, quite often Shakespeare gives information about what a person in a play is like through their names. For example, Romeo’s name means a person being romantic and kind. Benvolio can be nice and friendly. Falstaff is a character in Henry IV and he is lazy and funny. Now think what you can call a person in a play who is angry and hot-tempered all the time? Yes. Maybe Rage or Fury.
How can I express my ideas and feelings in a way full of life?
[Tip 2] Try metaphors. Shakespeare was a fan of metaphors. A metaphor is a way of comparing one thing with something else to show ideas, feelings, places and more. And the two things usually have the same qualities. In the play As You Like It, he writes, “________” What do you think of the metaphor in this sentence?
What should I do if I can’t find a proper word?
[Tip 3] Create new words. Eyeball. Lonely. Unreal... All these were created by Shakespeare. If you have an idea that you can’t think of a word for, be like Shakespeare and create your own. If you want to create words that mean something and may stand the test of time, try creating words like this: breakfast + lunch = brunch. And you can start with making up words for everyday things in your home.
Do you want to write like Shakespeare? You can put your questions here, or write to Bruce Richmond at bruce4weeksclass@163.com.
1.What can we learn about Bruce Richmond’s writing lessons?
A.They last for one week and cost some money.
B.Many students take his free online writing classes.
C.Students can watch Shakespeare’s plays in the lessons.
D.He gives lessons and answers questions at school.
2.What question might Sam ask?
A.What’s the most important thing to do to write good plots?
B.Why is the language really hard to understand?
C.What’s a quick way to make readers understand the characters?
D.How are all the details of the play put together?
3.For Tip 2, which of the following best fits the blank?
A.Do you not know I am a woman? When I think, I must speak.
B.One touch of nature makes the whole world families and relatives.
C.A fool thinks he is wise, but a wise man knows himself to be a fool.
D.All the world is a stage and all the men and women only players.
4.What might Bruce Richmond suggest to Thomas?
A.Make up new words. B.Translate some words.
C.Learn new words. D.Look for similar words.
5.The passage is written to ________.
A.encourage young students to be kind in their real life
B.attract parents to buy Shakespeare’s plays for their children
C.teach young students how to write like Shakespeare
D.show teachers that writing skills are too hard for the students

4.细节理解题。Tip 3讲创造新词(Eyeball, Lonely, Unreal都是莎士比亚造的词),Thomas的问题是找不到合适的词,建议是创造新词。
5.主旨大意题。通读全文以及末尾“Do you want to write like Shakespeare? You can put your questions here”可知文章目的是教学生像莎士比亚一样写作。
Two Chinese Mathematicians Make History at the 2026 Fields Medal Ceremony
Known as “the Nobel Prize of mathematics”, the 2026 Fields Medals were announced on July 23 at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Philadelphia. Four young scientists got this world’s top prize for math.
Two winners, Deng Yu and Wang Hong, are Chinese and have caught great attention from media around the world. This is an important moment that has never happened before. For the first time, Chinese mathematicians won this award, ending Western countries’ control of this famous prize for many years. Both finished their college studies at Peking University and then went abroad to continue their research.
Given by the International Mathematical Union every four years, the Fields Medal is only open to scientists under 40. Every winner gets two official prizes: a 14-karat gold medal with a picture of Archimedes and 15,000 Canadian dollars. The prize honors important new discoveries in different areas of mathematics.
Deng Yu works as a professor at the University of Chicago. He showed great talent in math when he was young. He won a gold medal in the International Mathematical Olympiad during high school and studied for his bachelor’s degree at Peking University. His important research made great progress on a key problem in Hilbert’s Sixth Problem. He created strict mathematical models to connect tiny molecular movements and large fluid motion, linking pure mathematics and physics.
At the same time, Wang Hong is 35, the youngest winner. She entered Peking University when she was 16. Now she is a Silver Professor at New York University’s Courant Institute. She solved the three-dimensional Kakeya conjecture, a problem no one could work out for a hundred years. It sits at the crossing of harmonic analysis and geometric measure theory. She said her success came from teamwork. Her mathematical ideas help create new developments in cryptography and computer science.
The fact that they both studied at Peking University for college shows that China’s basic mathematics education has made great progress. Their historic success broadens worldwide top-level mathematical research and encourages young people to study basic science subjects.

A.It is given to old and experienced math experts.
B.It rewards creative and valuable math research results.
C.Winners can only get money as their prize.
D.It is held once every five years.
2.What can we learn about Wang Hong’s success?
A.She finished her research by herself.
B.Her study at a foreign university was the only key to her success.
C.Teamwork played an important role in her achievement.
D.She solved the century-old problem when she was 16.
3.What can we infer from the two mathematicians’ learning experiences?
A.Studying abroad is unnecessary for math learners.
B.Young people can succeed by solving old math problems.

It’s clear that the world will be quite different in the year 2045. But what changes might we see? It’s pretty likely that robots and AI technology will bring great changes to jobs. Also, self-driving and flying cars will come into our daily life, making our lives easier. Scientists have even bigger ideas in a video called To the Future.
Dr. Juraz believes we might be able to control things round us simply with our thoughts. “Imagine that you could use simple devices (设备) to connect to your mind and control things around you simply by thinking about it.” Juraz says. According to him, scientists are working on the technologies that can make this happen. They’ve made some progress already.
The future has more than just that. Steven says that we’ll be able to create very strong but light things. New materials will change the way we build everything from cars to spacecraft. Imagine cars are safer, more energy-saving, and able to carry heavier things. Lighter spacecraft could mean great cuts in the cost and make more exploration goals possible.
Panny believes that our relationship with machines will change. She says, “I think one day we can tell a machine what to do with just a button or a few simple words.” For example, pilots have to follow many steps for a plane to take off. But in 2045, according to Panny, “Prepare for taking off”, and the computer will do the rest. Or maybe, we won’t even need pilots.
These are just a few of the many possible changes that 2045 might bring. It makes us wonder what other surprises the future holds. Will there be new forms of energy that change our lives?
1.What can we learn from the first two paragraphs?
A.Robots and AI have already controlled things with people’s thoughts.
B.Scientists are trying to develop technology to control things by thoughts.
C.Self-driving cars have widely entered people’s daily life now.
D.Dr. Juraz has invented simple devices to connect to our mind.
2.According to Steven, what is the future spacecraft like?
A.Cheaper. B.Safer. C.Bigger. D.Heavier.
3.How does Panny explain her idea?
A.By telling a story. B.By giving an example.
C.By listing numbers. D.By making comparisons.
4.What will the writer probably write about after the last paragraph?
A.Many possible changes. B.New forms of energy.
C.New wonders in 2045. D.Planes without pilots.
5.Which of the following shows the structure of this passage?
A. B. C. D.
【答案】1.B 2.A 3.B 4.B 5.A

When we think about scientific achievement, geniuses like Albert Einstein and Isaac Newton always come to mind. These people are often crazy about their subjects of interest, choosing their fields of specialty at an early age. But is this always the case?
In fact, many of the most important discoveries come from a different kind of mind. Charles Darwin was an aspiring geologist when he sailed to observe faraway lands. He had little knowledge in biology but through his travels, keen observations and great curiosity, he developed the theory of evolution by natural selection.
Another such great discovery was the invention of PCR (聚合酶链反应), which is essential for certain kinds of genetic research. Its inventor, Kary Mullis, hardly earned a Ph. D.in biochemistry. His time was spent writing fiction and running a bakery until a friend found him a job in biotechnology, where his great idea for PCR was born.
Darwin and Mullis were both natural explorers. Darwin did poorly in school but was always curious about the animals and plants. As a child, Mullis was more interested in the spiders in his grandparents’ basement than anything else.
It may not be surprising that these creative minds developed through play and exploration. Many educators argue that the classic model of education, in which teachers lecture and students memorize, is misguided. Most children are born with the drive to play and explore, which helps develop important skills. Probably the thinking skills Darwin and Mullis got were developed through this kind of play and exploration.
So, what are schools supposed to do today? They should allow our children to step out of the classroom, and encourage them to play and try new things. As Ni Minjing, head of the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, once said, “Every piece of soil, every flower and every clear night sky is a playground for scientific curiosity.”
1.What is the function of the first paragraph?
A.To introduce the topic. B.To explain the purpose.
C.To attract the readers’ attention. D.To provide related situation.
2.Which of the following is true about Darwin and Mullis?
A.Mullis got the idea for PCR while working at a bakery.
B.Darwin was a great biologist when he began his voyages.
C.Darwin was a sharp and curious observer.
D.Mullis earned his Ph. D.without difficulty.
3.What is the main contrast between “Einstein and Newton” and “Darwin and Mullis”?
A.The former group was more focused on formal education.
B.The latter group had a more non-traditional path to discovery.
C.The latter group started their fields of specialty at an early age.
D.The former group was more successful in scientific achievements.

Now is a great time of year to take a hike (徒步). Choose a weekend morning or afternoon, and ask family and friends to head out for a hike with you. Here’s how:
Pick a path.
The first step is to choose where you’re going. 1 Or you could make the walk more of a hike and head to a local nature area or national park. To find family-friendly paths near you, go to allpaths.com.You can search for trails with different standards.
2
You’ll want to wear hiking shoes. Add more clothing that you might need, such as a light jacket, that you can easily put on and take off when needed. 3 You could also pack extras, such as binoculars (望远镜) for viewing animals from a distance and a pencil and notebook for sketching.
Add excitement.
To get your group to take notice of nature on your walk, you could create a treasure hunt game.
Make a list of things to look for. At the start of the hike, hand out copies of the list with pencils.
4 The goal is to be the person who finds the most things. Your list could include flowers or leaves of different colours, and mushrooms.
Walk lightly.
One of the main rules of spending time in nature is to “leave no waste”. This means you want to leave the path as it was when you found it. Carry away all your waste, and don’t take any leaves, flowers, or parts of trees with you. 5
A.Get fully prepared.

Arts and heritage are more than just old objects or pretty pictures. They carry the stories, beliefs, and traditions of our ancestors. 1 Without them, we would not know where we come from.
2 Old buildings are often knocked down to make space for new roads and skyscrapers. Traditional crafts, such as hand-weaving or folk singing, are losing their popularity among young people. 3 Therefore, if we do not take action now, we may lose these treasures forever.
Protecting heritage is not only the duty of governments, but also of every individual. For example, we can visit local museums and learn about our history. 4 When we show interest, young people may become more willing to learn traditional skills. As a result, these customs can stay alive for future generations.

We’ve all been there — you’ve sent a message and it’s marked “read”, but you haven’t heard anything back. What’s the deal? While being left on read (已读不回) can be confusing, it’s also pretty common. 1 Here are a few tips to help you deal with it.
Expect the best. Remind yourself that the person is probably just busy. Ask yourself if you actually know their schedule. They might have other things to do that you don’t know about. Here are a few other reasons for a delayed (延迟的) response. They want to give you a longer response but can’t right now. They put their phone away to focus on work or school. 2 Maybe they thought about what they wanted to say but didn’t actually text it.
3 Give them a little space so they have a chance to reply. If you send a lot of follow-up texts, it’ll be hard for them to keep up and they might get stressed. Leave them with just one text to catch up on, and they will probably appreciate your patience.
Reread your previous (先前的) messages. Check if your messages are hard to understand. It’s okay if you review your message again and notice that it might have been a little unclear—it happens! 4
Put your phone away. 5 Don’t let it upset or confuse you. If you get your mind off all notifications (通知), you’ll be able to brainstorm new ways to spend your time.
A.Try not to double-text.
B.They accidentally forgot to reply.
C.Keep it out of sight and get some peace of mind.
D.You can keep the situation from troubling you until you hear back.
E.You might feel relieved when you find something that is easy to misunderstand (误解).

A swamp (沼泽) is a wetland, an area in the countryside that is filled with water for most or all of the year. There are swamps all over the world. 1 In fact, that isn’t all true. Swamps help reduce pollution in rivers and lakes. They protect our cities from floods. They are home to numerous animals and plants.
A lot of the wildlife is hidden in swamps. There are a huge number of animals there. 2 You can even find red-crowned cranes, a national first-class protected animal, walking slowly to catch small fish and insects. Some swamps also serve as protected places for sea animals to grow before they head to the ocean.
3 There are mangrove trees that can live in salt water. The roots of these trees help to protect and build our soil, and they can protect us from extreme weather. There are also strange and beautiful plants that eat insects.
In the past, people removed (抽走) the water from the swamps so they could grow food or build houses on the land. 4 Swamps have huge plant and animal diversity. These plants and animals need each other to survive. And we need plant and animal diversity to survive. If we lose the swamps, we will lose a lot. 5
A.We must take care of them!
B.But we know now this isn’t a good idea.
C.Swamps are home to many interesting and important plants.
D.Many people think that swamps are problems, or that they aren’t useful.

Plan a Green Campaign That Works
A green campaign should lead to a real change, not only a colorful poster. Many campaigns begin with great excitement but disappear when the special week ends. Careful planning can turn attention into a habit that lasts. 1
Choose one clear problem that your group can influence. “Protect the Earth” is too broad, while “reduce untouched lunch waste” can be measured. 2 For example, weigh untouched food for five ordinary school days and ask students why they left it. These facts will help you set a realistic goal instead of choosing an attractive number without evidence.
Design an action that is easy to follow. If students need five minutes to understand a recycling rule, many will give up. 3 A clearly labeled bin placed where waste is produced is more useful than a long rule on a distant wall. Test the action with a small group before using it across school; their mistakes may reveal a problem the planning team did not notice.
Share progress during the campaign. A weekly number, a short story or a photo can show whether the work matters. Do not report only the best day, because an unusual event may give a false picture. 4 Honest information builds trust and helps the group improve. It also allows other classes to learn from a plan without copying its weak points.
At the end, compare the result with your starting point. Decide what should continue, change or stop. Thank volunteers, but do not treat the closing meeting as the finish line. 5 A successful campaign leaves behind a habit, a useful system or better knowledge. If nothing remains after the posters come down, the group has created an event rather than a solution.
A.Before deciding how much to reduce, collect simple evidence about the present situation.
B.Choose a person or system that will support the useful action after the campaign.
C.Clear signs and convenient tools should make the better choice easy at the moment it is needed.
D.Begin by turning the big environmental idea into one specific task.
E.If the result is smaller than expected, report it and explain what the group will adjust.
【答案】1.D 2.A 3.C 4.E 5.B

A. B. C. D.

In conclusion, arts and heritage are living parts of our culture. Although they belong to the past, they still influence our lives today. 5 After all, a society without its heritage is like a tree without its roots.
A.Moreover, wars and natural disasters can destroy cultural sites in a single day.
B.If we value and protect them, they will continue to enrich our world.
C.However, many forms of heritage are disappearing today.
D.They connect us to our identity and the past.
E.Therefore, we should build more museums to display traditional art.
F.We can also support artists by buying their handmade works or attending their performances.

E.For example, you can see frogs, wild ducks, bonefish and Chinese water deer.
