My name is Jeff. I like learning foreign languages. When I retired (退休) in 2018, I could speak three foreign languages. At that time, my biggest wish was to learn a new one.
Later, I watched a program about Chinese culture on TV. I made the decision to learn Chinese because I was so interested in Chinese culture. I found a cultural center in the north of London by chance. It offered Chinese language lessons fit for me. In March 2019, I began to learn Chinese. To attend the classes, I left my home at 5 a.m. every Saturday and drove 3 hours to the cultural center. But this didn’t stop me. After class, I practiced a lot. Through learning, I developed a love for Chinese poems and joined in activities like Chinese poetry readings. I increasingly dreamed of visiting China.
My Chinese teacher Mr. Liu always mentioned “It’s better to travel ten thousand miles than to read ten thousand books.” He advised that I should take part in a study tour in China. So in August 2024, I went on a study tour to Xi’an with my classmates from the cultural center. During the trip, as the student best at Chinese among us, I tried to act as a translator. I helped my classmates in many ways like asking the way and shopping in Chinese. This experience encouraged me to study further.
The British often say “Learning is a lifelong journey”, which means “It is never too late to learn”. I will keep on learning Chinese, hoping to be a lifelong learner. I believe that learning Chinese will bring even more possibilities to my life.

Grandpa Chen is 82. His family often laughs because he puts the remote control in the fridge, or calls his dog by the cat’s name. But his granddaughter Meiling says, “Grandpa’s memory is like an old library—some cards are missing, but the best books are still there.”
Meiling studies psychology at school. She explains that memory is not a camera. A camera records everything in front of it; a brain chooses. It keeps what has meaning, feeling or repetition. That is why Grandpa Chen cannot remember what he ate on Monday, but he can still recite a poem his teacher taught him in 1958.
To help him, the family made a “memory board” in the hallway. On it are big photos: Grandma’s birthday, Meiling’s school sports day, the old house where he grew up. Under each photo is one sentence. When Grandpa stands there, the board acts like a key—it opens the door to his long-term memory.
They also use senses. Meiling plays his favourite old songs while they fold clothes. The smell of jasmine tea, the sound of the erhu, the touch of old photographs—all these “sense hooks” bring back stories he has not told for years.
Meiling writes in her diary: “Memory is not only storing facts. It is keeping love. When we help Grandpa remember, we are not fixing a machine. We are walking back into his world with him.”
1.What funny things does Grandpa Chen sometimes do?
2.Why can Grandpa Chen still recite a poem from 1958?
3.What is on the family’s “memory board”?
4.How do the family use senses to help Grandpa remember?
5.What does Meiling’s diary tell us about the true meaning of memory?
【答案】1.He puts the remote control in the fridge or calls his dog by the cat’s name. 2.Because the brain keeps what has meaning, feeling or repetition; the poem was meaningful and repeated long ago. 3.Big photos of family events and one sentence under each photo. 4.By playing old songs, using the smell of jasmine tea, the sound of the erhu, and the touch of old photographs. 5.Memory is not only storing facts; it is keeping love and walking back into a loved one’s world.

In a faraway village in the mountains of Sichuan, there is a small community center that has changed the lives of many children over the past years. The center offers free educational programs and after‑school activities for children from poor families.
Li Hua, a volunteer at the center, began working there fifteen years ago. He noticed that many children in the village didn’t have enough basic education and opportunities for personal development. In 2010, he founded a scholarship program to support children who could do well in academics or the arts. The program has helped hundreds of children work hard for their dreams.

Have you ever felt that studying is a bit boring but watching someone else study makes you want to join in? You’re not alone. “Study with Me” is a new learning method you can try. The basic idea behind it is that watching someone else study inspires us to do the same.
“Study with Me” is a kind of live broadcast (直播) on the internet. It often shows real-time scenes of someone studying, either in silence or with soft music. It creates a sense of companionship (陪伴) and provides shared focus, making learning more enjoyable and effective. That’s why more and more students around the world are attracted to it.
Why does watching someone else study make us want to study too? Scientists say it’s a human’s natural habit — we often do the same things as the people around us, called mimicry (模仿). We may follow their note-taking ways or use the same study tools. Also, we need social support: the people on the screen are like secret study partners, and when we see them working hard, we might feel that we are part of them. It can inspire us to pull through difficulties.
“Study with Me” can be helpful, but keep these in mind: First, we should set clear study goals because it can help us stay focused on our own work. It is important not to depend on it too much because true inspiration should come from within. Lastly, we’d better stick to learning with trustworthy people who have well-organized study plans.
In the digital age, learning methods are changing. “Study with Me” creates global connections and encourages students to enjoy learning through focus, fun and friendship.
1.What does “Study with Me” often show?
2.When do we feel that we are part of a team according to the text?
3.Why should we set clear study goals first before joining online study partners?

【答案】1.Real-time scenes of someone studying, either in silence or with soft music. 2.When we see them working hard. 3.Because it can help us stay focused on our own work. 4.I prefer studying with “Study with Me”. Because it creates a sense of companionship and makes learning more enjoyable.

阅读短文,用英语回答问题(注意词数要求)。
Do you like remembering things? Is that difficult or easy for you? I’d like to tell you some ways to improve your memory.
My first piece of advice is that if you want to remember something well, you have to review it often. You might review the material two days after learning it, then a week later, then two weeks later, and then a month later. After a month, you will find that you can remember the material easily.
My second piece of advice is to use a coloured pen to mark the important parts on your book. This will help you in two ways. First, it will help you pay attention to the most important parts when you learn something. It is always easier to remember only the key points. Second, this will make reviewing easier. When you open your book, the coloured parts will show you the most important things quickly. In this way, you don’t have to review all the material again.
Another piece of advice is to use the proper time well. First, review all the information in your mind before you go to sleep, because your brain is working while you are sleeping. If you think about the information before you go to sleep, you might be able to remember it better. Another good time for memorising information is in the morning because you have just rested and your brain is fresh and clear. So you might also try to review the important information in the morning.
1.If we want to remember something well, what should we do according to the first piece of advice? (不超过5个词)
2.Why will we remember the information better before going to sleep? (不超过10个词)
3.What’s the passage mainly about? (不超过10个词)
【答案】1.We should review it often. 2.Because our brain is working while we are sleeping. 3.It is mainly about some ways to improve our memory.
【导语】本文作者针对如何改善记忆力给出了几条实用的建议,告诉我们可以通过反复复习、标记重点以及抓住合适记忆时间这几种方式来更好地记住知识。
1.根据第2段“My first piece of advice is that if you want to remember something well, you have to review it often.”可知,想要牢牢记住事物就要经常复习。

3.根据第1段“I’d like to tell you some ways to improve your memory.”可知,整篇文章围绕提高记忆力的方法展开。
When people speak of Wang Hong, they often mention the Fields Medal (菲尔兹奖). However, the most valuable part of her story for students lies in her spirit when facing difficult questions.
When she was a child, Wang had a serious burn and had to stay indoors for a long time. She couldn’t play freely outside, so books and maths problems filled her quiet world. This experience helped her develop patience and learn to work alone. Later, this ability let her spend days thinking over hard problems without rushing to get answers.
At school, Wang thought actively but was once laughed at for raising her hand often. Her teacher helped her balance courage and careful listening. She joined a problem-solving group. The group didn’t offer ready-made answers. It forced her to explain why an idea worked, where it might fail and how to improve it in other ways.
University brought new challenges. At first, Wang failed to get into her dream maths major (专业). With competitive classmates around her, she doubted herself, but she never gave up her love for maths. She kept reading maths books and doing more exercises. She also discussed hard problems with her teachers and classmates whenever she met trouble. She tried different courses and finally transferred (转入) to the School of Maths. When studying in France, she put aside her maths research for a short time to explore art and architecture (建筑). She did this to find out whether she truly wanted to return to maths.
Wang Hong’s success tells us that hard work and continuous efforts matter a lot. If we keep trying and never give up, we will make progress in our studies.

【答案】1.When she was a child. 2.To explain why an idea worked, where it might fail and how to improve it in other ways. 3.Her teachers and classmates. 4.To find out whether she truly wanted to return to maths. 5.Yes, I do. Because she never gave up when facing difficult questions. (答案不唯一,言之有理即可)

As we move further into the digital age, the human attention time is decreasing rapidly. We’re struggling to focus on single tasks for long periods of time. We are easy to get distracted… oh, look at that dog We need an approach that makes information easier to pick up. Enter microlearning.
Microlearning is a way of gaining knowledge that breaks information into bite-sized pieces, typically five to ten minutes long. Actually, microlearning has been around for as long as human beings have been learning. However, the use of the term “microlearning” and its rise in popularity is a relatively new thing with the increased spread of the Internet and the popularization of e-learning. Microlearning is perfect for today’s learners because they’re always on the go. This means they can learn on their commute (通勤), lunch break and more.
The neuroscience (神经科学) behind microlearning partly explains why it works so well. It uses the cognitive skills learning system in our brain, the main system for learning skills and helping with short-term memory. The use of spaced repetition also plays a part. Research suggests we learn better when we study a little at a time, not all at once. It helps to fight against the Forgetting Curve, which suggests we forget 90% of the information we learn within a week. After all, each repetition provides a new opportunity to practice active recall. Think of those flashcards you made for an exam. You created small pieces of content and looked at them over and over again until they were input in your memory
With its bite-sized knowledge, microlearning allows you to learn at your own pace, offering more flexibility (灵活). Content can be tailored (裁剪) to meet your specific needs, preferences, and learning styles, allowing for personalized learning experiences. Also, it reduces stress, and increases productivity. When you have a lot of things to do, you may feel stressed. By breaking content down into short and easy units, it makes learning feel less challenging. Nice!
Microlearning may be small but it sure is great. It’s easy to find, quick to complete and super effective. What’s not to love?
1.What is microlearning?
2.Why is microlearning so effective according to neuroscience?
3.How does microlearning reduce stress?
4.Would you like to use microlearning in your study? Why or why not (at least two reasons)?
【答案】1.Microlearning is a way of gaining knowledge that breaks information into bite-sized pieces, typically five to ten minutes long. 2.It uses the cognitive skills learning system in our brain, the main system for learning skills and helping with short-term memory. The use of spaced repetition also plays a part. 3.By breaking content down into short and easy units, it makes learning feel less challenging. 4.Yes, I would like to use microlearning in my study. Firstly, it allows me to learn at my own pace, which is very flexible. Secondly, it can be tailored to meet my specific needs and learning styles, making learning more personalized and effective.

Ten years later, he started to drive a car, just like most people around him. But last year, he changed again. Now he rides a shared bike to the subway station first, and then takes the subway to school. It takes him forty minutes, only ten minutes longer than driving, but it costs almost nothing and makes no pollution.

In a faraway village in the mountains of Sichuan, there is a small community center that has changed the lives of many children over the past years. The center offers free educational programs and after‑school activities for children from poor families.
Li Hua, a volunteer at the center, began working there fifteen years ago. He noticed that many children in the village didn’t have enough basic education and opportunities for personal development. After research, Li Hua discovered that the children faced many challenges, including limited resources and teachers. “We often say that every child should get a chance to learn,” he said. “But these children don’t even have the basic tools they need.”
Li Hua wanted to make a difference. He spent years raising money and working together with local organizations to improve the center. In 2010, he founded a scholarship program to support children who could do well in academics or the arts. The program has helped hundreds of children work hard for their dreams.
Li Hua wakes up at 4 a.m. every day to prepare for the day’s activities at the center. He believes that providing a safe and supportive environment is important for the children’s success.
Li Hua’s efforts have inspired many people in the community to work together. Wang Fang, a member in the program, returned to the village after completing her studies in the city. “Without Mr. Li, I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to go to college,” Wang Fang said. “He taught us the importance of education and helping others.”

Liu Huan was one of the greatest musicians in China. Born in Tianjin in 1963, he studied French literature at university. That means he didn’t receive formal professional music training at school. Instead, he learned music all by himself. He had such strong love for music that he spent most of his free time practicing the piano and guitar and studying music knowledge that helped him make progress step by step.
Although he suffered from serious health problems for years, he never gave up his music dream. In 2008, he took part in the Beijing Olympic Opening Ceremony. Even with great pain in his legs, he stood on the big global stage and sang the theme song You and Me together with Sarah Brightman. His beautiful voice touched thousands of people around the world. Besides singing, he also taught music at university for more than 30 years. He always told his students that nothing is impossible for a person who holds on to his dream.
Besides his great achievements in music and teaching, Liu Huan was also a warm-hearted man. In 2019, he gave away 20 million yuan to build a charity fund (慈善基金). It is used for offering help to talented young musicians under 30. He hoped more young people could keep their love for music and create wonderful works.

4.During the coming National Day holiday, which do you prefer, studying with “Study with Me” or studying alone? Why?

(不超过10个词)
1.When did Wang Hong get badly burned?
2.What did Wang Hong’s problem-solving group force her to do?
3.Who did Wang Hong communicate with to solve her problems in university?
4.Why did Wang Hong put aside her maths research for a short time when studying in France?
5.Do you think Wang Hong is a great inspiration? Why?

On September 2nd, 1945, Japan formally signed the Instrument of Surrender, marking the great victory of the Chinese people after 14 years of bitter and bloody struggle. The largest military parade (阅兵) was held on Tian’anmen Square on September 3rd, 2025, to commemorate (纪念) the victory in the World Anti-Fascist War.
The main purpose was to remember history, honor the heroes who fought for peace, and show China’s commitment to maintaining world peace. It was not a show of military power to threaten (威胁) other countries, but a celebration of peace and a warning against war.
Many world leaders attended the event. A total of 12,000 troops from the Chinese army, navy, air force, and other armed services took part. They marched (行军) in perfect order, showing great discipline and high spirit.
One of the most touching moments was the presence (出席) of the war veterans (老兵). These elderly soldiers, who fought bravely during the war, were driven in open-top vehicles. They received the highest respect and warm applause (掌声) from the crowd. Their presence reminded everyone that today’s peace was built on the sacrifice and courage of previous generations.
