Early in the morning in Msalura, Salima, Malawi, before shops open and children walk to school, mountains of waste line some streets. Across Malawi, nearly all urban (城市的) centers are short of waste collection services, bins and proper disposal (处理) sites. About 72 percent of waste in Malawi is thrown away in rivers or open spaces, or is burned, worsening pollution and public health risks.
For many people, this has long been a familiar and annoying sight. But for 27-year-old Jeremiah Mwanza, waste isn’t just a problem. It’s a chance to protect the environment, create jobs and build a cleaner future. “I couldn’t turn a blind eye to what I was seeing in my own community,” he says. “Waste was everywhere, and I knew it was harming our health and environment.”
Jeremiah’s journey began in 2018, shortly after finishing his studies in Natural Resources Management at Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Technology. After that, he took up environmental work. “What people see as waste, we see as useful materials,” Jeremiah says. “Recycling reduces the waste going to landfill (垃圾填埋地). This helps prevent water, air, and land pollution.
Jeremiah set up Apocalypse Waste Management Solutions, a waste management company based in Salima that turns waste from cities into organic fertilizer (有机肥), greatly improving the environment. His work is now reaching hundreds of homes and businesses, offering a practical solution to Malawi’s growing waste problem.
The company now deals with more than 120 tons of waste every month and serves over 250 homes in Salima. It is also creating green jobs. Sixty percent of its workers are women, many of whom depend on these jobs to support their families.
4. What is the main problem of Malawi mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. Unhealthy habits of local people. B. Poor waste management services.
C. Inconvenient life in the urban areas. D. Weak public environmental awareness.
5. Why did Jeremiah set up the company?
A. To complete a public project. B. To turn trash into treasure.
C. To get some experience. D. To support his family.
6. Which of the following can best describe Jeremiah?
A. Outgoing and kind. B. Honest and selfless.
C. Talented and caring. D. Responsible and creative.
7. What can we learn about Jeremiah’s waste management project?
A. It operates nationwide. B. It needs improvement.
C. It is a win-win model. D. It is government-supported.

I used to believe people only used subtitles (字幕) when necessary. Now I’m forced to recognize how wrong I was. In 2021, a survey in the UK found that 80% of 18- to 25-year-old Britons used subtitles all or some of the time, while a new survey carried out by a video website found that 87% of young Britons use subtitles more than they used to. Meanwhile, the 2021 survey found that less than a quarter of Britons over 60 used subtitles.
Why is this the case? According to the new survey, 80% of people my age “double-screen” when they watch. I am among them, too. Thanks to subtitles, I find myself able to quickly catch what one character says, look down at my phone, send a message, and then look up before that character has even finished his or her line. The viewing experience thus becomes efficient (高效的).
Social media has also encouraged the use of subtitles. It is now a given that most creators add text captions (说明文字) to their videos, and viewers cannot turn them off. Young people are satisfied with rapid-fire content and videos with faster cuts, which text captions make possible. Also, 85% of videos on social media are now watched on mute. This happens when people are on their way to work, at the gym, or living in a shared house. Subtitles perfectly meet this need.
Now, this need for efficiency is shaping my generation’s TV watching habit. However, I have to ask, “Are we now watching shows just to find out what happens, and to prove we’ve seen them?” Since when did we finish work, sit down on the sofa and think “I can’t wait for a bit of understanding tonight”? TV is supposed to be fun. Shouldn’t we be focused on enjoying it?
8. What do the surveys mentioned in paragraph 1 show?
A. Old Britons go against the use of subtitles.
B. Subtitle use is common among young Britons.
C. Subtitle use is increasing across all age groups in the UK.
D. Generations disagree strongly over subtitle use in the UK.
9. What effect do subtitles have on “double-screen” youngsters?
A. They make their viewing more focused.
B. They encourage them to be content creators.
C. They reduce the attention needed for good viewing.
D. They allow phone use without missing main content.
10. What does the underlined part “on mute” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. With no sound. B. With fast speed.
C. With loud music. D. With full details.
11. What does the author think of today’s TV watching habit?
A. It puts efficiency before fun.
B. It makes people feel more tired.
C. It helps people save a lot of time.
D. It offers a new way to learn things.
D
Researchers at the University of Oulu in Finland decided to run an experiment with bumblebees (大黄蜂). They built a special round chamber (室) that was just 1.3 inches tall. The chamber was too small for flight and too tall for bumblebees to touch the top.
But before the researchers began testing the bumblebees, they had to let them discover a couple of things. First, there was a round blue mark with a sugary treat on it. At the same time, the researchers let the bees get used to having a small foam (泡沫) ball around. Then, the researchers put the foam ball on top of the blue mark. The bees had to move the ball off the mark to get the treat. This helped the bees understand the ball could be moved.
Finally, the researchers presented the real challenge. They moved the blue mark to the top of the chamber. They also made small holes in the floor of the chamber, each big enough to hold the foam ball. One of these holes was just below the blue mark. The researchers were testing to see if the bees could work this out: by rolling the ball into the hole below the mark, they could climb onto the ball to get the treat. About 73% of the bees found the solution. They were able to do this even though they were young bumblebees that had never seen anything like this before.
The results suggest that even though bumblebees have very small brains, they can come up with creative solutions to problems they have never faced before.
“Bees probably don’t think the same way as humans do, but they probably have more brainpower than many people give them credit for,” study co-author Olli Loukola says. “Most people think insects are reflex (反射)-based machines and that they can’t feel pain. Some people don’t even realize that they have brains. I hope that these results change people’s opinions about bees.”
12. How did the researchers prepare the bumblebees for the final test?
A. They trained them to fly in the small chamber.
B. They showed them how to push a sugar treat.
C. They helped them get used to a small space.
D. They made them know the ball was movable.
13. What was the final goal of the bumblebees in the test?
A. To roll the ball into a hole.
B. To fly to the top of the chamber.
C. To use the ball to get the sugar.
D. To push the sugar treat off the top.
14. What is the major finding of the experiment?
A. Bumblebees perform better after training.
B. Bumblebees can solve problems creatively.
C. Bumblebees can learn by watching what other bees do.
D. Bumblebees can only succeed after repeated failures.
15. What can be inferred from Loukola’s words?
A. Bees can bear more pain than humans.
B. Bees have larger brains than expected.
C. Bees are cleverer than people think.
D. Bees think in a way similar to humans.
第二节(共5小题,每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Many teens don’t know how to tell their parents when they need help. It’s understandable — telling parents that you’re facing some challenges can be hard. ____16____ They’re not really happy if you’re not happy. You’re more important to them than you realize.
____17____ Even the most successful people need it. People who are successful in life are not those who don’t have any problems, but those who are good at getting help. For example, if you’re having a hard time in math, you could go to your parents and say, “I’m really struggling with math. Can you help me with that?”
When you want to bring up your problem, pick a peaceful moment. ____18____ You don’t want to compete for your parents’ attention with other things or family members. For example, you could ask your parents if they have a quiet moment to chat after dinner, or suggest taking a short walk together. When both of you are relaxed, the conversation is more likely to go smoothly.
It isn’t always easy to find a good time to talk to parents. If your parents ignored (忽视) you before, try asking them again. Sometimes it takes parents a little time to get the message. You can set aside time to talk. Also, going to another adult you trust can be helpful. They can help you talk to your parents about how you’re feeling. ____19____
The sooner you ask for help, the sooner you’ll start feeling better. ____20____ You’ll be proud of yourself afterward, and feeling less alone can make a big difference.
A. So, don’t put the conversation off.
B. An aunt or an uncle is a good choice.
C. It’s easier to talk when everyone is calm.
D. Parents may be surprised by your problems.

【答案】8. B 9. D 10. A 11. A

【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段中的 “Now, this need for efficiency is shaping my generation’s TV watching habit.(如今,这种对效率的需求正在塑造我们这一代人看电视的习惯。) ”以及“TV is supposed to be fun.
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. B 15. C

40. 我希望你能尽一切可能找出谁为这个事故负责。
I wish you to do everything you can to find out who _____________________________ the accident.
