Molly Wogan loves dogs so much that she decided to give up a big party of her life to help them. When she learned many dogs lived in bad conditions or had their lives cut short, she decided to give them back to the dog shelters that had helped her family find their family dogs.
So, instead of having a big party for her initiation ceremony (成人礼), she decided to help the dogs. As Molly said, “To be an adult means doing good things, but I didn’t want to focus on a party. I didn’t really need a party, but the dogs need the help.”
Molly was already a shelter volunteer helping out once each week. But she decided to take things to the next level. Molly started the Precious Animals Wonderful Shelters Project to help the dogs in bad situations travel across the country to find people who were willing to adopt them. Molly set a target to raise $2,500 in one year to give to 14 local shelters along with items like toys. Over the year, her project grew.
Molly ended up volunteering over 400 hours and sold homemade dog toys and treats, and key chains at 45 different events. In just a year, she raised $38,000. Meanwhile she also took two “transport” trips from Georgia to her home state of Massachusetts to move 110 at-risk dogs to the Northeast, where she helped each find a home. With the money she raised, she could get every dog vet visits, food and transport.
Molly hopes to save another 100 dogs this year. She is a wonderful example of a young person following her heart and taking action to make the world a better place. Molly is not only saving 100 dogs’ lives, but she is changing the lives of those who adopt them as well.

Scientists have developed a new type of smart bandage (绷带) that can signal the type of bacterial (细菌的) infection it’s protecting, just like a traffic light, as well as release the right type of drugs on demand. The traffic light system works just like this: Green means no bacteria or a low concentration of bacteria, yellow means drug-sensitive (DS) bacteria responsive to standard antibiotics (抗生素) and causes antibiotic release, and red means drug-resistant (DR) bacteria that need extra help to be wiped out.
In testing the bandage on mice, the research team was able to successfully treat both DS and DR infections using the new method. However, the common methods of sensing resistance are limited by time, the requirement for professional personnel, and expensive instruments. Moreover, the abuse of antibiotics causes the accelerated process of bacterial resistance.
It’s easy to see how a simple bandage and light could overcome some of these limitations. Treatment doesn’t have to wait for a doctor to make a diagnosis, and the bandage can get the right sort of drugs applied at the earliest opportunity. What’s more, the person wearing the bandage gets real-time feedback on what’s happening with the infection, if there’s an infection at all. The researchers say it offers numerous benefits over existing treatments that make use of light, including photodynamic therapy or PDT.
We’ve been seeing quite a few upgrades to the traditional bandage in recent years, thanks to advances in science — like the nanofiber mesh that attracts bacteria and draws some of it out, speeding up the healing process. Then there’s the novel bandage for treating burns, which stops bacteria from multiplying and lowers the risk of infection.
The more work that a bandage can do while it’s protecting a wound, the better. Efforts to improve bandages continue and now we've got a bandage that not only releases antibiotics, but also tells the patient exactly what’s going on too.
28. What is the smart bandage mainly designed to do?
A. Avoid the use of antibiotics. B. Clear out harmful bacteria.
C. Detect bacterial infections. D. Increase treatment options.
29. What is the advantage of the smart bandage?
A. It saves much time and cost. B. It removes the risk of infection.
C. It prevents the bacterial resistance. D. It improves doctor-patient relationship.
30. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?
A. Traditional bandages are out of use now.
B. More smart bandages will be developed.
C. Progress in science calls for more research.
D. People are urged to study medical science.
31. What does the text focus on?
A. A successful test on mice. B. A colour-changing bandage.
C. Sensing drug-resistant bacteria. D. Preventing abuse of antibiotics.

New research in Scientific Reports finds certain giraffes can mentally combine quantities, a foundation for complex number skills. Zoo tests in Barcelona confirmed two of four giraffes consistently passed the carrot-based math test.
Numerical thinking was once thought to be unique to humans. Yet over recent decades, researchers have discovered many animals can process quantities. One earlier study found giraffes outperformed eight other ungulates (有蹄类动物) at quantity distinction. Another showed giraffes can also consider probabilities when choosing food — they choose the ones with proportionally more carrots. Loidi, lead author of the Scientific Reports paper, says these findings inspired them to give the giraffes this latest test.
In a video of giraffe Nuru taking the test, the first yellow container has two carrot sticks, the second yellow container has three, and the green container has two. Loidi then adds two carrot sticks from the green container to the first yellow container. After a short pause, Nuru correctly chooses the first container, then chomps (大声地吃) down on her reward of four carrot sticks. To make the right decision, Nuru had to “handle those quantities in her mind”, holding each one, adding the relevant amounts together, and understanding that 2+2 is greater than 3, Loidi says. In multiple-round tests, two giraffes, Nuru and Njano, passed with flying colors. However, because the giraffes most likely don’t assign symbols to stand in for the quantities, the way humans and some other animals can, “it’s not real addition,” Loidi clarifies. “It’s more like the perceptual basis for addition” — possibly reflecting the same mental processes we have built on to create more complex math.
“Knowing giraffes’ skill level lets us peek into how they navigate the world and see how the mind has evolved from a wider view,” says Loidi. “While we can’t know exactly why giraffes have these abilities, they may use them for survival and social choices. As we share the planet with giraffes and other creatures, their skills offer an important reminder: These animals have much to show us. They are cognitive beings, and we are not the only intelligent animals.”
32. What inspired the selection of giraffes as test subjects?
A. Their gift for food distinction. B. Their interest in carrots.
C. Their ability to count numbers. D. Their sensitivity to quantities.
33. What does the underlined phrase “with flying colors” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Eventually. B. Conditionally. C. Narrowly. D. Excellently.
34. How did Nuru pass the test?
A. By comparing container colors. B. By remembering food symbols.
C. By combining carrots mentally. D. By counting carrots one by one.
35. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Giraffes’ skills are for social recreation. B. Giraffes have a wider view of the world.
C. Animal intelligence deserves recognition. D. Humans get a full picture of giraffes’ world.
【答案】32. D 33. D 34. C 35. C

A项“Look for work experience.(寻找工作经验。)”,与下文语意一致,连接顺畅。故选A项。

Sam was a kind-hearted person. He longed for a chance to explore nature and he wanted to do his part to beautify the world.
Finally, the opportunity came. On Arbor Day (植树节), his class organized a trip to a local village to plant trees. Sam was excited about it and couldn’t wait to tell his mom the good news. So the next day, Sam and his mom went to buy some tools for planting trees, including a shovel(铲), a bucket, gloves and so on.
On the day of the event, Sam and his classmates arrived early at the starting point. It was a beautiful day and everyone looked particularly happy. With the tools in hand, Sam got into the bus with everyone else and headed off to their destination.
As soon as they reached the village, all the students were divided into three teams by their teacher. One team was responsible for planting the trees, one team for shovelling the soil and one team for watering the trees. At the teacher’s command, everyone started to do their job.
However, it was the first time that many of the students had taken part in planting trees, so they had no idea about how to start. Of course, Sam was one of them. Fortunately, their teacher was a middle-aged man from the countryside who had some knowledge of planting trees. In order to set an example to the students, the teacher started to plant trees himself. After watching the teacher plant the trees, everyone also became busy. Before long, they planted hundreds of trees. Sam watched very carefully, not wanting to miss any of the details. Finally, Sam learned how to plant trees by himself and felt happy.

24. Why did Molly start the project?
A. To help the dogs find new homes. B. To get more money to raise dogs.
C. To make the dogs visit some cities. D. To help dogs adapt to the environment.
25. Which of the following can best describe Molly?
A. Brave and careful. B. Clever and humorous.
C. Kind and selfless. D. Cooperative and pretty.
26. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. The praise for Molly. B. The example of adults.
C. The situation of the dogs. D. The future of the project.
27. What can we know about Molly from the text?
A. She is ready to help more people.
B. She became rich for saving many dogs.
C. She travelled across the country to raise dogs.
D. She has been devoting herself to helping dogs.

Education is a lifelong journey that goes far beyond the walls of a classroom. A great ____56____ (educate) once described teaching as the art of awakening curiosity. In his view, a good teacher does not simply pass on information. Teachers should guide students to ask questions rather than just follow rules. This narrow view has caused widespread ____58____ (anxious) among students, who fear failing to meet expectations. Parents are often ___59___ (astonish) to discover how much pressure their children silently bear. The ____60____ (tense) between high standards and mental health can be difficult to manage. Too much pressure can also create ____61____ unbalanced education system that values scores above all else. Some educators believe that learning should not be ____62____ (pure) about memorizing facts. Instead, it should involve the ____63____ (create) of new solutions and the courage to ask questions. The process of ____64____ (obtain) knowledge should be active, not passive. They also need time to rest and reflect, for mental health is part of education. Therefore, students should not rely ____65____ their teachers for every answer; they must learn to think for themselves. Sam was a junior high school student. He lived in a community in Charlotte and usually had little exposure to country life. So much of what he knew about plants came from text-books.
