When I was a child I was often told what not to eat. “You don’t want to get fat” was on constant repeat throughout my childhood. It really messed up my relationship with food — something that took me years to overcome. Because of this, I’m careful not to connect what my kids weigh with their worth as people. I encourage my daughter to make healthy snack choices and often dissuade (劝阻) her from a second dessert. But one day when I heard her saying “I think I’m too fat,” my heart sank. It made me wonder if giving her advice on snacks was having an unintentionally negative impact.
According to Charlotte Markey, a professor of psychology, food is one of the rare subjects where, as parents, saying less is more. “There are so many things in parenting that are good to talk through, but I’m not convinced that food is one of them,” she says. “It just creates some worries and insecurities in kids that aren’t necessarily healthy.”
Instead, she recommends applying a well-known concept among nutrition experts called the “Division of Responsibility,” where parents provide a variety of mostly healthy foods to their kids at fixed times, and the kids themselves decide what and how much they want to consume — even if that means occasionally eating more cookies than carrots.
Allowing kids to eat what they want also exposes them to the natural consequences of their decisions. “When your child says, ‘My stomach hurts,’ you can say, ‘Well you had a lot of sugary foods and you might feel better if you made some other choices,’” says Markey. “Let them feel like they have some control over it.”
I’ve been trying out these strategies and I’ve found that when I’m less restrictive, they do make better decisions. “Feeding is a long game,” says Markey. “The food you have available makes a huge difference. Even if they don’t eat it, they’ re seeing it. And then all of a sudden it clicks.”

A. She is upset by her kids’ weight.
B. She is critical of the way she was fed.
C. She is interested in making food.
D. She is particular about what she eats.
2. Which of the following would Markey disapprove of?
A. Allowing kids to eat cookies occasionally.
B. Offering various foods to kids at fixed times.
C. Explaining to kids the risks of taking snacks.
D. Talking with kids about school at mealtimes.
3. What should kids do according to the “Division of Responsibility”?
A. Make diet decisions on their own. B. Share their food with other kids.
C. Eat up what is provided for them. D. Help their parents do the dishes.
4. What does the author think of the strategies she has been following?

How You Open Your Car Door Matters to Cyclists
The “Dutch Reach” isn’t a new dance move or a random challenge. 6 And you might keep your car door safe in the process, too. All you have to do is change how you open your door.
Typically, a person sitting in the driver’s seat of a car opens the door with the hand closest to it. 7 Pull the handle and the door is open. For most drivers and passengers, this movement feels natural and effortless because it has become second nature over time. But if you happen to do that at the wrong time, you may unknowingly create an obstacle for a passing cyclist. The cyclist might be knocked down off the bike. 8 Clearly, the solution is for the person exiting the vehicle to check for traffic. However, the car door design and longtime habits have made the process automatically.
9 Open your car door with your other hand using the Dutch Reach. So instead of using your left hand, reach for the door handle with your right. This will force you to turn your body. At the very least, you’ll look into your side view mirror to check for any traffic. All Dutch are taught it and used to opening their car doors this way. It’s part of regular driver education. The technique dates back about 50 or 60 years in the Netherlands. In 2016 an American named Michael Charney started the Dutch Reach Project. He wanted to popularize the practice in the US and his efforts seem to be paying off. 10
A. It is easy to do once you are used to it.
B. Luckily, there’s a simple way to solve the problem.
C. People are trying to change the way to open the car.
D. It’s a simple move that can help prevent harm to cyclists.
E. The car door is likely to be damaged by the fast-moving bicycle.
F. It makes sense since doors are designed to be opened that way.
G. Several states now include the Dutch Reach in their drivers’ handbooks.

A项“她为孩子的体重感到不安”与原文“careful not to connect what my kids weigh with their worth”不符;C项“她对制作食物感兴趣”和D项“她对自己吃的东西很挑剔”在文中未提及。故选B。
故选 A。
5. FCABDE
前文提到“The ‘Dutch Reach’ isn’t a new dance move or a random challenge” (“荷兰式开门法”不是新的舞蹈动作或随机挑战),后句“And you might keep your car door safe in the process, too” (在此过程中你或许也能保护车门安全) 进一步补充其作用。D选项“It’s a simple move that can help prevent harm to cyclists” (这是一个能帮助防止伤害骑行者的简单动作)承接前文,解释了“荷兰式开门法”的本质,且“simple move”与后句的“in the process”形成逻辑呼应。故选D。
前文说明“通常,司机用离车门最近的手开门”,后句“Pull the handle and the door is open” (拉把手,车门就开了) 描述动作的自然性。F 选项“It makes sense since doors are designed to be opened that way” (这是合理的,因为车门就是设计成那样打开的) 解释了“用近手开门”的原因,“that way”指代前文的开门方式,因果关系明确。
B选项“Luckily, there’s a simple way to solve the problem” (幸运的是,有一个简单的方法解决这个问题) 起到承上启下的作用,“simple way” 指代后文的“Dutch Reach”,自然过渡到解决方案。故选B。
