Handwritten Chinese characters (文字) can be beautiful. I still remember looking at Chinese and not understanding anything it said and yet feeling a strong attraction (吸引力). In fact, some students start learning Chinese because of the characters. After having studied Chinese for a while, I realized that handwriting in Chinese takes a very long time to learn.
Living as we do in a digital era (数字时代) with smartphones and computers, most students sooner or later ask themselves this question: Is it really necessary to learn how to write by hand in Chinese? When using smartphones or computers, we can use phonetic input (语音输入) systems, which choose the characters we want for us as long as we can remember how they are pronounced. Since we enter different characters, we seldom need to be able to recognize the difference between characters in detail; the computer makes the right choices for us. Do we really need to write Chinese by hand at all?
I think most people agree that you should learn to write at least some characters at some point as a student of Chinese, although not necessarily straight away and not necessarily all the characters that you can say. But unless you don’t care about written language at all, you should learn the basics of handwriting. Without it, it will be very hard to understand characters. You don’t need to be a calligraphy master (书法大师), but you do need basic handwriting skills to do this. Simply looking at things is, as usual, a bad way of learning.
I think learning the most common 500 characters or so is a good idea for all students. If you actually want to write by hand, increase that to 1,000. Then learn to handwrite characters outside of the 1,000 most common on a need-to-know basis.
41.What does the author think of Chinese characters?
A.They attract some foreigners to learn Chinese. B.They are less communicative than English words.
C.They show the greatness of Chinese culture. D.They are not really that difficult.
42.What can we infer about characters in paragraph 2?
A.People doubt the necessity of learning to write characters.
B.Characters are very difficult for foreigners to learn.
C.People believe learning to write characters is important.
D.Characters may disappear with the development of society.
43.What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Understanding characters. B.Being a calligraphy master.
C.Keeping a good learning habit. D.Learning basic handwriting skills.
44.What does the author suggest in the last paragraph?
A.Learning to write the most common characters first.
B.Teaching all the students handwriting skills.
C.Learning to handwrite all the characters.
D.Giving up handwriting characters.
45.What would be the best title for the text?
A.How to write Chinese characters on a computer?
B.When was the last time you wrote something by hand?
C.What rules are there for handwriting?
D.Is it necessary to learn to write Chinese characters by hand?
41.A 42.A 43.A 44.A 45.D

Do we really need to write Chinese by hand at all?(由于我们输入不同的字符,我们很少需要能够详细识别字符之间的差异;电脑为我们做出了正确的选择。 故选A。
根据第三段“But unless you don’t care about written language at all, you should learn the basics of handwriting. Without it, it will be very hard to understand characters. You don’t need to be a calligraphy master, but you do need basic handwriting skills to do this.(但是,除非你根本不在乎书面语言,否则你应该学习书法的基础知识。没有它,就很难理解汉字。你不需要成为一名书法大师,但你确实需要基本的书法技能才能做到这一点)”可知,划线词this指代上文中的“理解汉字”。故选A。
根据最后一段“I think learning the most common 500 characters or so is a good idea for all students. If you actually want to write by hand, increase that to 1,000. Then learn to handwrite characters outside of the 1,000 most common on a need-to-know basis.(我认为对于所有学生来说,掌握大约500个最常见的汉字是一个不错的做法。如果你确实想要手写的话,那就增加到1000个。然后,根据实际需要,学习掌握超过这1000个中最常见的汉字的书写方法)”可知,作者在最后一段建议先学习书写最常见的汉字。故选A。

On a sunny June afternoon, Anthony Perry got off the train at Chicago’s 69th Street station. The 20-year-old grocery store worker was heading to see his grandfather to check out a car he wanted to buy. He didn’t expect to become a hero that night, but he did.
Moments after Perry stepped onto the platform, two men started fighting. Suddenly, they fell over the edge and onto the train tracks. One man landed on his back, he tried to block the hits, but then he began to convulse (抽搐). The attacker jumped back up onto the platform and disappeared.
It soon became clear why the man was convulsing: he had fallen onto the third rail, which carried 600 volts of electricity for the trains. As Perry and others watched in horror, the man was shaking uncontrollably, and his head hit the tracks again and again.
A woman cried out, “Help him Please, someone.”
Perry couldn’t just watch. He quickly sat at the edge of the platform and lowered himself down. Assuming (假设) all the rails were electrified, he took quick, high-kneeing steps like in football until he reached the man.
The man looked dead, his body still shaking from the electricity. Perry wondered how to escape the dangerous situation. Thankfully, the train he’d just exited was still there, but he worried it might start moving again.
Perry caught the man’s wrist. An electric shock hit him, and he jumped back. He tried again and was shocked once more. On the third try, he braved the shock, got the man’s arm, and pulled him away from the third rail.
Luckily, the man was breathing — but weakly. A woman on the platform shouted, “Give him chest compressions.”
Perry did his best until the man began to convulse again. Perry held him steady to keep him from falling back onto the rail.
Soon, doctors and firefighters arrived. They had cut the power to the third rail. Perry let them take over, climbed back onto the platform, and continued to his grandfather’s house. They went to see the car, but it had already been sold.
Later that day, the news reported the incident, praising an unnamed hero. After a friend told the media, Perry became famous. A local organization gave him a car, and Perry decided to train to become an EMT (急救员) with the Chicago Fire Department.
Why was Perry the only one to help? He believes it’s because he wasn’t thinking about the danger to himself.
46.Why did the man on the train tracks begin to convulse?
A.Because he was attacked badly on the platform.
B.Because he fell onto the third rail which carried electricity.
C.Because the attacker pushed him onto the rail on purpose.
D.Because he tried to block the hits and hurt himself seriously.
47.How did Perry first respond when that man was lying on the tracks convulsing?
A.Worried. B.Curious. C.Terrified. D.Pleased.
48.When Perry first tried to save the man on the tracks, he ________.
A.knew exactly which rail was electrified
B.was very confident about his ability to save the man
C.supposed all rails were dangerous and took careful steps
D.expected to be shocked but still went ahead
49.What did Perry do immediately after he successfully pulled the man away from the third rail?
A.He started giving the man chest compressions.
B.He waited for the doctors and firefighters to arrive.
C.He climbed back onto the platform and left the scene.
D.He held the man steady to prevent him from falling back.
50.How does the author organize the events in the article?
A.By listing the main characters’ personalities in sequence.
B.In time order, from the beginning of the incident to its outcome.
C.By presenting the problems first and then explaining the causes.
D.By comparing Perry’s actions with the actions of other people on the platform.

根据第三段“It soon became clear why the man was convulsing: he had fallen onto the third rail, which carried 600 volts of electricity for the trains.(很快,这名男子抽搐的原因就清楚了:他掉到了为火车提供600伏电力的第三根铁轨上。)”
根据第三段中“As Perry and others watched in horror, the man was shaking uncontrollably, and his head hit the tracks again and again.(佩里和其他人惊恐地看着,这个男人无法控制地颤抖着,头一次又一次地撞到铁轨上。)”
根据第五段中“Assuming (假设) all the rails were electrified, he took quick, high- kneeing steps like in football until he reached the man.(假设所有的铁轨都带电,他像踢足球一样快速地迈着高膝步,直到到达那个人身边。)”
根据倒数第五段“Luckily, the man was breathing — but weakly. A woman on the platform shouted, “Give him chest compressions.”(幸运的是,那名男子还有呼吸——但很微弱。站台上的一名女子喊道:“给他做胸外按压。”)”、倒数第四段“Perry did his best until the man began to convulse again. Perry held him steady to keep him from falling back onto the rail.(Perry尽了最大努力,直到那名男子又开始抽搐。Perry稳住他,防止他再次跌落到铁轨上。)”可知,Perry成功地把那个人从第三根铁轨上拉出来后,Perry给他做胸外按压。故选A。
通读全文,尤其是根据文章第二中“Moments after Perry stepped onto the platform, two men started fighting. Suddenly, they fell over the edge and onto the train tracks. One man landed on his back, he tried to block the hits, but then he began to convulse (抽搐). The attacker jumped back up onto the platform and disappeared.(Perry刚踏上站台,就有两个人打了起来。突然间,他们摔到了站台边缘,掉到了铁轨上。其中一人仰面着地,他试图挡住击打,但随后便开始抽搐起来。袭击者跳回站台,消失不见了。)”、第五段中“Perry couldn’t just watch. He quickly sat at the edge of the platform and lowered himself down.(Perry不能只是旁观。他迅速坐到站台边缘,顺着站台滑了下去。)”、倒数第三段中“Soon, doctors and firefighters arrived.(很快,医生和消防员赶到了。)”可知,文章按照“Perry看到两人斗殴并有人摔落铁轨→男子因触电抽搐→Perry救人→医护人员赶到→Perry成名并计划成为急救员”的时间顺序展开,从事件开始到结果完整叙述了整个过程。故选B。

Giving blood regularly may not just be saving the lives of other people, it could also be improving your own blood’s health at a genetic level, according to a new study. A team of researchers compared samples from 217 men who had given blood more than 100 times in their lives, to samples from 212 men who had donated less than 10 times, to look for any variance in blood health.
While the differences were subtle, the frequent donors’ blood was more likely to have beneficial mutations (突变) in a gene called DNMT3A.Other mutations in DNMT3A have been previously linked to blood cancer. “Our work is a fascinating example of how our genes interact with the environment as we age.” says stem cell biologist Dominique Bonnet, from The Francis Crick Institute in the UK. Specifically, the team looked at blood stem cells, which produce more blood cells on demand. As we get older, these mechanisms can start to break down, leading to problems with blood cancers such as leukemia (白血病).
Blood loss triggers the production of the hormone erythropoietin In lab tests on blood stem cells treated with erythropoietin, the researchers found those with the DNMT3A mutation produced blood faster than those without the mutation. This suggests frequent blood loss leads to more production of the mutated blood cells. Research in mice shows the DNMT3A mutation results in healthier blood levels after the stress of blood loss. “Activities that put low levels of stress on blood cell production allow our blood stem cells to renew and we think this favors mutations that further promote stem cell growth rather than disease.” says Bonnet.
However, there are limitations to consider. Blood donors are more likely to be healthier anyway (it’s a condition of giving blood), so figuring out any additional health benefit is tricky, because it might actually come from being in better shape to begin with. “Our sample size is quite modest, so we can’t say that blood donation definitely decreases the occurrence of pre-leukemic mutations.” says Bonnet. In the US, there’s such an urgent need for blood donors that someone needs blood or platelets (small fragments in blood) every two seconds. Having healthier blood is an added bonus.
While waiting for more detailed studies to confirm these findings, the study tells us more about how blood cancers can get started in the first place. “We’re now aiming to work out how these different types of mutations play a role in developing leukemia or not, and whether they can be targeted therapeutically.” says stem cell biologist Hector Huerga Encabo, from the Francis Crick Institute.
51.What was the primary focus of the study mentioned in the passage?
A.The genetic differences between frequent and occasional blood donors.
B.The role of erythropoietin in blood cell production.
C.The relationship between blood donation and leukemia.
D.The therapeutic applications of DNMT3A mutations
52.According to the research, blood loss affects blood stem cells in that ______ .
A.It triggers the production of cancerous cells in the DNMT3A gene
B.It accelerates the growth of cells with beneficial DNMT3A mutations
C.It benefits the overall health condition of the donors
D.It weakens the regenerative capacity of blood stem cells
53.What can be inferred about the DNMT3A gene from the passage?
A.Its activity is primarily regulated by environmental factors.
B.Most mutations in DNMT3A are harmless and non-functional.
C.The gene is only responsible for blood cancer development.
D.Its beneficial mutations may enhance blood cell production efficiency.
54.What limitation does the study acknowledge?
A.Donors’ genetic backgrounds were not fully accounted for.
B.Donors’ pre-existing health conditions might influence results.
C.Erythropoietin levels were not measured in the experiment.
D.Mouse models cannot accurately reflect human genetic mechanisms.
55.Based on the passage, the research team’s next goal is ______ .
A.to develop a new drug targeting DNMT3A mutations
B.to conduct large-scale human trials of erythropoietin therapy
C.to determine which DNMT3A mutations directly cause leukemia
D.to analyze environmental factors influencing blood donation behavior
【答案】51.A 52.B 53.D 54.B 55.C
根据第一段中“A team of researchers compared samples from 217 men who had given blood more than 100 times in their lives, to samples from 212 men who had donated less than 10 times, to look for any variance in blood health. (一组研究人员将217名一生中献血超过100次的男性的样本与212名献血少于10次的男性的样本进行了比较,以寻找血液健康方面的任何差异)”可知,该研究的主要重点是频繁和偶尔献血者之间的基因差异。故选A项。
根据第三段中“Blood loss triggers the production of the hormone erythropoietin (促红细胞生成素激素). In lab tests on blood stem cells treated with erythropoietin, the researchers found those with the DNMT3A mutation produced blood faster than those without the mutation. This suggests frequent blood loss leads to more production of the mutated blood cells. (失血会触发促红细胞生成素激素的产生。在对用促红细胞生成素处理过的造血干细胞进行的实验室测试中,研究人员发现,带有DNMT3A突变的细胞比没有突变的细胞产生血液的速度更快。这表明频繁失血会导致更多突变血细胞的产生)”可知,失血会加速带有有益DNMT3A突变的细胞的生长。故选B项。
53.推理判断题。根据第三段中“In lab tests on blood stem cells treated with erythropoietin, the researchers found those with the DNMT3A mutation produced blood faster than those without the mutation. (在对用促红细胞生成素处理过的造血干细胞进行的实验室测试中,研究人员发现,带有DNMT3A突变的细胞比没有突变的细胞产生血液的速度更快)”可知,带有DNMT3A突变的细胞比没有突变的细胞产生血液的速度更快,所以DNMT3A基因的有益突变可能会提高血细胞的生产效率。故选D项。
54.细节理解题。根据第四段中“Blood donors are more likely to be healthier anyway (it’s a condition of giving blood), so figuring out any additional health benefit is tricky, because it might actually come from being in better shape to begin with. (无论如何,献血者更有可能更健康(这是献血的一个条件),所以要弄清楚任何额外的健康益处是很棘手的,因为这实际上可能一开始就来自于身体状况更好)”可知,研究承认献血者先前的健康状况可能会影响研究结果。故选B项。
55.细节理解题。根据最后一段中“We’re now aiming to work out how these different types of mutations play a role in developing leukemia or not, and whether they can be targeted therapeutically. (我们现在的目标是弄清楚这些不同类型的突变在白血病发展中是否起作用,以及是否可以对它们进行治疗)”可知,研究团队的下一个目标是确定哪些DNMT3A突变直接导致白血病。故选C项。

D

In college, Spring Break (春假) is usually associated with the beach, parties and sleepless nights, bringing about relaxation, free time and friends. Students who wish to spend their break doing something productive and rewarding, however, may choose to participate in the Alternative Break Program. It places college students in communities both at home and abroad.
The Program allows students to take part in various projects dealing with issues such as literacy (识字), homelessness and the environment. It includes helping kids with their lessons, raising money for families in need and collecting data for environmental research.
The hope is that, by getting themselves involved in different environments, students will have the opportunities and broaden their view. In turn, they will incorporate (融合) their experiences and lessons learned into their own communities. In a word, the program aims to encourage students to be active citizens and engage themselves in making a difference in society.
In the spring of 2006, about 3,600 students in the USA participated in the Alternative Break Program.
Samantha Giacobozzi, now director of the Program, has been on five alternative break trips herself, including trips to New Orleans, India and the Dominican Republic. “I was a student who went on alternative break trips and had my life totally transformed by that experience,” she said. “Every year, we meet many students who have attended the Program. You can see changes in their life that are connected with their alternative break experiences.”
The Program began in 1991. Today, it has become increasingly popular with college students in the United States.
