第二节读后续写:
Taking a deep breath, Emma decided to start over. A wave of determination surged through Emma as she reminded herself that a true scientist never gave up. She spread out her scattered notes, carefully piecing together data from the scraps of paper she had left. Upon finding her handwritten notes, she organized them methodically, cross-referenced her memory, and began rewriting her presentation. The dim light of her desk lamp illuminated her tired but focused face, as the ticking clock reminded her of the fast-approaching deadline. No sooner had she recreated part of her project than she realized she could make improvements to her original design.
After the fair, the winners were to be announced. “Your resilience and innovation are what science is all about,” one judge remarked, smiling warmly. Hearing the judge’s words, Emma felt a wave of relief and pride, realizing that her efforts had been worth it. Her eyes glistened with unshed tears as she clutched her certificate tightly, her heart swelling with gratitude. Having overcome her challenges, Emma realized that success wasn’t just about winning but about perseverance and learning. This experience taught Emma that true science lies not in perfection, but in the courage to keep going.

Deep in the mountains of Jiangxi Province,Li Xinrong holds up a freshly collected egg for his
livestream viewers. He cracks it open. The rich yellow yolk shines."Our chickens run free in the
forest,"he says.Within minutes, his eggs are sold out.The small forest eggs reflect the rapid growth of
China's forest-based economy.
Li works at a farm in Guangchang County. Not long ago,the forests around here produced almost
no direct financial benefits."We used to call them 'sleeping resources',"says a local villager. That is
changing. The county has launched a plan to turn its forests into a source of income-without
destroying them.
Guangchang has a forest coverage rate of over 70 percent. For years, those trees just stood there.
Now,farmers grow medicinal herbs and mushrooms under the shade of the forest canopy ()They
raise chickens and collect camellia (oil. The forest provides natural temperature control, clean
water,and protection from harsh weather.
One local company grows mushrooms on hundreds of hectares of forest land.Instead of using
chemicals,it uses waste from the local lotus seed industry-dried lotus shells-as material for
growing mushrooms."Farmers used to burn or throw away these shells,"says the company manager.
"Now they sell them to us."The forest-grown mushrooms taste better and sell for four times the price of
greenhouse mushrooms.
The results are clear.By 2025,the county's forest-based economy had reached over 2 billion yuan,
raising the annual income of more than 10,000 farming families by over 3,000 yuan each."Demand is
so strong that we can hardly stay abreast,"as Li said,"so the local authorities plan to further expand
the forest-based industry."Now,the forest is no longer sleeping. It has come alive-and so have the
Guangchang people.
24.Where does Li Xinrong sell eggs?
A.In a local store.
B.In a trade fair.
C.On the internet.
D.On the street.
25.What makes "sleeping resources"come alive?
A.Rapid growth of economy.
B.Environmental destruction.
C.A high rate of forest coverage.
D.Local government's proposal
26.What can we know about the forest-grown mushrooms?
A.They need chemical fertilizers.
B.They are of high economic value.
C.They are nutritious but taste bad.
D.They replace greenhouse mushrooms.
27.What does the underlined phrase"stay abreast"probably mean?
A.Keep up.

Imagine wandering through a dark forest for hours, then traveling all the way home-in a straight
line.Bull ants do this every night, and scientists have long wondered how.It turns out they use a
previously unknown type of Moon compass(指南针)一never seen before in the animal kingdom
To figure it out,Cody Freas,a behavioral ecologist, and his colleagues trapped bull ants the
moment they left their nests. They allowed or denied the insects the chance to observe the Moon by
grouping the individuals in a clear bottle or a black box. Then they brought them to an unfamiliar
setting 200 meters away-an abandoned basketball court-to test in which direction they traveled
home.
After comparing their separate paths, the team concluded the behavior of ants that could see
moonlight was consistent with what's called a time-compensated(时间补偿的)lunar compass.
Essentially, the insects observe how quickly the Moon moves to estimate the relative position of their
home and update that prediction with time.
The dynamic speed of the Moon's movement complicates this strategy. It rises slowly, speeds up
when it's at the highest point in the sky,and then slows down as it sets.Ants could be terribly misled if
they don't account for that, but the researchers discovered the insects have an inborn sense that the
Moon's speed shifts, and they compensate for it.
The discovery makes bull ants the first known animals to navigate (using this type of
compass.Navigating with the Moon presents several advantages.Unlike stars, which other insects use
to navigate, the Moon is not blocked by light pollution, and it can be bright enough to break through

At the China Umbrella Museum in Hangzhou,West Lake silk umbrellas are displayed as
56
remarkable example of traditional Chinese craftsmanship. This art form reflects both technical skill
57 deep cultural meaning.
Silk umbrellas are made through a complex process 58 combines bamboo frame
construction,silk covering,and artistic decoration.Thin bamboo is made into a frame,then covered
with silk.Usually, scenes inspired by the West Lake, such as misty bridges, flowing water, and seasonal
landscapes,59 (represent)in soft and poetic forms.
60 makes the umbrella unique is not only its appearance, but also its symbolic meaning.
The circular shape stands for 61 (hammonious)and completeness in Chinese culture. When 62
(unfold),it looks like a painting in motion. When you close the umbrella,it returns to the simplicity of
natural bamboo,63(show)a balance between art and function.

In a small town in Iowa,sixteen-year-old Emma Thompson was an ambitious student with dreams
of becoming a scientist.Every year, the local high school held a science fair, and Emma had always
placed high but never won first place This year, she was determined to change that.Emma spent months
working on her project,a study on renewable energy using algae ()She recorded data, ran
experiments, and even stayed up late into the night perfecting her presentation. Her parents often found
her working at her laptop, surrounded by books and lab equipment. One evening,a week before the
science fair,Emma was working on her project when her laptop screen suddenly went black.Panicked,
she tried to restart it,but it was no use.All her data, notes, and the presentation were on that laptop, and
she hadn't backed up her files.Desperate,Emma took the laptop to the local repair shop. The technician
told her it would take at least a week to recover the data,if it was even possible.Emma left the shop,
feeling a sense of despair. How could she possibly recreate everything in just a few days?
Returning home, she sat on her bed, fighting back tears. Her mind flashed back to a conversation
she had had with her science teacher,Mr.Reynolds, earlier in the year.He told her the true test of a
scientist was not in how they handled success, but in how they overcame failure and that innovation
often came from the ability to adapt and persevere.
Emma let Mr.Reynolds'words sink in.She realized that this was her chance to prove herself-as a
true scientist.Determined to make the best of her situation, she began to gather all the resources she still
had.She found her handwritten notes, some scattered papers and relied on her memory to
recall key points of her research.
