One day, a boy found a cocoon (茧) on a branch in his garden. A few days later, a small hole appeared in it. The boy sat and watched for hours as the butterfly inside fought hard to push its body through the tiny hole.
Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It looked as if it had got as far as it could. The boy felt sorry for it. “Let me help you,” he said. He took a pair of scissors and carefully cut the cocoon open.
The butterfly came out easily. But something was wrong. Its body was large and swollen (肿胀的), and its wings were small and wrinkled. The boy kept watching, waiting for the wings to open and become strong enough to carry the butterfly into the sky.
It never happened. The butterfly spent the rest of its short life crawling around. It was never able to fly.
What the boy didn’t understand was this: the struggle (挣扎) to get through the small hole was nature’s way of making the butterfly’s wings strong. By trying to make things easier, the boy had taken away the very thing the butterfly needed.
Sometimes, struggles are exactly what we need in our lives. If we went through life without any difficulties, we would never become as strong as we could be.
19. Why did the boy cut the cocoon open?
A. He wanted to keep the butterfly as a pet.
B. He thought the butterfly needed help.
C. He wanted to study the cocoon.
D. His father asked him to do so.
20. What happened to the butterfly in the end?
A. It flew into the sky.
B. It went back into the cocoon.
C. It could never fly.
D. It was caught by the boy.
21. What does the underlined word “wrinkled” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Not smooth.
B. Very colourful.
C. Too big.
D. Quite strong.
22. What does the story mainly tell us?
A. We should never help others.
B. Butterflies have short lives.
C. Scissors can be dangerous.
D. Struggles can make us stronger.

Have you ever wondered how dolphins sleep? Unlike us, dolphins can’t simply close their eyes and fall into a deep sleep for hours. They live in water but breathe air, so they must swim up to the surface to breathe again and again. They also need to watch out for sharks (鲨鱼). If they slept the way we do, they could drown (淹死) or be eaten.
Scientists have found that dolphins have a clever solution: they sleep with only half of their brain at a time. While one half of the brain rests, the other half stays awake. It controls breathing and keeps watch. After a while, the two halves switch. In this way, both halves get enough rest, and the dolphin is never completely “off”.
Even more interesting, when the left half of the brain is asleep, the right eye is closed and the left eye stays open. That’s because each eye is connected to the opposite side of the brain. So a sleeping dolphin may look at you with one open eye!
Dolphins are not the only animals with this ability. Some birds can do the same thing when they fly long distances over the sea. Scientists hope that studying these animals may help us understand more about how our own brains rest.
23. Why can’t dolphins sleep deeply like humans?
A. They need to breathe air and watch out for danger.
B. They are too busy looking for food.
C. Their brains are smaller than ours.
D. The water is too cold for them.
24. When the right half of a dolphin’s brain is asleep, which eye is open?
A. Both eyes.
B. The left eye.
C. The right eye.
D. Neither eye.
25. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?
A. Birds sleep more than dolphins.
B. Some other animals can also sleep with half their brain.
C. Scientists know everything about sleep.
D. Long flights make birds tired.
26. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Dangerous Sharks in the Sea
B. Why Birds Fly Long Distances
C. How to Sleep Better at Night
D. Half Asleep: The Secret of Dolphin Sleep

On 6 October 2026, the phone rang while 82-year-old physicist Francis Halzen was working on a research proposal in Italy. It was the Nobel Committee. He had just won the Nobel Prize in Physics. “It was a great surprise,” he said. “I obviously didn’t expect it.” He then joked that he hoped the prize would help his new proposal get approved.
Halzen won the prize for his work on neutrinos (中微子), tiny particles that come from stars and other places in the universe. Trillions of them pass through your body every second, but they almost never hit anything, so they are extremely hard to catch. Scientists call them “ghost particles”.
How do you catch a ghost? Halzen’s answer was ice — a lot of it. Starting in the 1980s, he and his team came up with the idea of turning the ice at the South Pole into a giant telescope. They drilled deep holes in the ice and placed more than 5,000 light sensors about 2,500 metres below the surface. When a neutrino does hit the ice, it produces a tiny flash of blue light, and the sensors record it. The huge detector, called IceCube, took seven years to build and was completed in 2010.
For years, many people doubted the plan. “People always thought this was a cute idea, but it would never work,” Halzen said. “The greatest surprise is that we did make it work.” In 2013, IceCube found high-energy neutrinos from far outside our galaxy for the first time, opening a new window onto the universe.
Today, more than 450 scientists from 14 countries work on IceCube. Halzen calls the prize “a celebration of a very unusual project” — and of the patience it took to build a telescope out of ice.
27. What was Halzen doing when he got the news?
A. Giving a lecture in Sweden.
B. Working on a research proposal in Italy.
C. Building a telescope at the South Pole.
D. Having lunch with his team.
28. Why are neutrinos called “ghost particles”?
A. They are very hard to catch.
B. They only appear at night.
C. They are bigger than stars.
D. They are blue in colour.
29. What can we learn about IceCube?
A. It was completed in 2013.
B. Its sensors are on the surface of the ice.
C. It took seven years to build.
D. It was built by scientists from one country.
30. What can we infer from Paragraph 4?
A. Halzen planned to give up the project.
B. IceCube was a cheap and easy project.
C. Halzen didn’t trust his team.
D. Few people believed IceCube would work at first.

第四部分 书面表达(参考范文)
Stay Calm, Stay Strong
As Grade 9 students, many of us feel stressed these days. For me, the pressure mainly comes from exams and piles of homework. Sometimes I even worry so much that I can’t fall asleep.
Luckily, I have found some ways to deal with it. First, I make a study plan every week, so I know what to do each day. Second, I play basketball for half an hour after school, which helps me relax. When I feel down, I talk to my parents or friends. They always cheer me up.
My advice is: don’t keep your worries to yourself. Take a deep breath, do one thing at a time, and you will find that you are stronger than you think.
